I just heard Phil Lesh sing this at age 83. Amazing all the years between. Such a beautiful song. At the end, these folks will have left us with unimaginably profound music that will reverberate for ages untold.
One thing I love about their songs, the lyrics of various songs can apply to different stages of life. They don’t just sing about youthful carefree happiness.
Always thought this was 'where all the print is blurred' which would make more sense. Anyway it's a beautiful song (along with many others on 'American Beauty').
How the world isn’t an entire world of Deadheads I will never understand. This is church. Thank you Robert Hunter for all the amazing lyrics and thank you boys for bringing my life such joy through the years.
In the attics of my life Full of cloudy dreams; unreal Full of tastes no tongue can know And lights no eye can see When there was no ear to hear You sang to me I have spent my life Seeking all that's still unsung Bent my ear to hear the tune And closed my eyes to see When there were no strings to play You played to me In the book of love's own dreams Where all the print is blood Where all the pages are my days And all my lights grow old When I had no wings to fly You flew to me You flew to me In the secret space of dreams Where I dreaming lay amazed When the secrets all are told And the petals all unfold When there was no dream of mine You dreamed of me
I was lucky enough to be living in Hampton Roads and attend these 2 shows. The "spaceship" was certainly vibrating a higher frequency on this night. The place went ape shit on Dark Star and it was magic after.
@@TankWilliams__Jr I FLEW!!! and had a masive group hug/cry with my best friends in the world. about 15 minutes or so after the show ended and everyone was walking out, spontaneously the whole crowd turned around and went back inside and just CHEERED. I've never seen anything like it before or since.
It was unbelievable. All the years of running around with the band, luckily seeing some of the best shows of the 80’s and boom-Hampton 89. Game changer.
frenchie this song is a tear jerker I LOVE IT......when i had no wings to fly you flew to me........that just gets the tears rollin' I Love you for everything you do to bring back all my greatest memories of my life!!! Thank ya....birdie
I received a pass from Eileen and and made sure to try and get in the building AEAP. As I entered the floor to my amazement the boys were still on stage 😳 I had my brother and his then best friend with me while the band sang they were TALKING !!! I looked at them with rage in my eyes and told them to STFU 😡 At that point Jerry looked at Phil Bobby & Brent and counted 3-2-1 and sang a cappella “WHEN I HAD NO WINGS TO FLY-YYYYYYYYYYYYY, YOU FLEW EW TO ME E E TO ME” 😭 Mike Drop 🎤 then walked off. Mind Blown 🤯 I listened to the second set of night one today and couldn’t stop crying because their intensity and accuracy was simply extraordinary
Seeing this video, what impresses me the most is how much Jerry obviously cared about getting this right. Two times, in the beginning of the song, it looks to me like he wants to KILL Bobby for fucking up, once with the guitar, and once with the lyrics. Jerry sang this from the heart. Just gorgeous.
From what I know, Garcia was "lazy" about being motivated to bring back old material (look how long he resisted doing Unbroken Chain, and as evidenced, rightly so!), but once he gave in to the pressure, his attitude was "Alright, if we're gonna do it, let's get it right!"
Agree, but kinda hard to get mad at Bob for fucking up lyrically when I'm not sure Jerry ever got through a song unscathed. Wonder the looks Bob Jerry when he couldn't figure out Wharf Rat for 2 minutes
Classic Country Gospel. This tune would not have seemed out of place on Hee-Haw's Gospel segment. Gents, take off your hats. Think of the You in this song like the You in Debbie Boone's "You Light Up My Life".
I used to own the bootleg of this concert and it's very uneven. I know it was quite an event, but I threw the cassette away and did not convert it to digital.

One of the most beautiful lyrics in the history of music.

@@peterkealey7543 It would only make more sense your way if you don't understand Robert Hunter's intention behind his choice of words
Hunter/Garcia.....Broken mold. Thanks for so many year's...so many songs....So many roads 😃
This ❤❤❤❤
Blurred.. where all the print is blurred. Just sayin... Had to correct that. Nothing personal. Rollingthunder
An All American Songbook, is that of the Grateful Dead. Timeless Masterpieces that brighten so many days and lives.

Because Jerry is dead nearly 30 years. I love their albums but I see no point in going to some imitation band.
Thank you Robert Hunter for giving us these beautiful words.
Rest in peace, Robert Hunter.
In the attics of my life
Full of cloudy dreams; unreal
Full of tastes no tongue can know
And lights no eye can see
When there was no ear to hear
You sang to me
I have spent my life
Seeking all that's still unsung
Bent my ear to hear the tune
And closed my eyes to see
When there were no strings to play
You played to me
In the book of love's own dreams
Where all the print is blood
Where all the pages are my days
And all my lights grow old
When I had no wings to fly
You flew to me
You flew to me
In the secret space of dreams
Where I dreaming lay amazed
When the secrets all are told
And the petals all unfold
When there was no dream of mine
You dreamed of me
Every time I read it all I see are tears What a hopeful set of verses. Just what we need in these crazy times
Blessed to see this, all these years later it still tears me up
I was as well, and yes, it still does.
Amen
When I had no wings to fly ..you flew to me ❤❤❤❤❤
I put being at these shows at the top of my resumé! One of my greatest life achievements :) Long live Jerry and Robert - thank you for EVERYTHING.
IWT! No words...
Never again, will there be such a soulful sound. I hope I am wrong.
In the secret space of dreams,
Where I dreaming lay amazed...
Great memories.
I was there!!🤘🐺🤘 Such an epic tour...
The lyrics are so beautiful, i love that song, one of my favorites on the album.
RIP Hunter... thank you

One of the greatest bust outs ever.
I cannot imagine being there. I would have died.

@@Ben.Jordan truly a magical moment in dead history... so incredible. CHEERS.
I have a lot of older friends who were there I was only 7 at the time. Sublime indeed. I love Brent's vocals!

I had a dream last night where we all were singing this song to a group of homeless people. I had to come and see the bust out in 1989. Heavy.
I’m not sure I’ve ever made it through this song without wet cheeks.
Yep and I’m here again tonight
When I had no wings to fly, you flew to me

Sent this to Ez also, very poignant, reminded me of the soul connection you are blessed to have. Love you both.
I literally can't think of a better Grateful Dead show to have been at.
Love this!

have heard covers but jerry has to sing this
Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams’ version is the only one that cover I can tolerate.

Larry and Teresa with Amy Helm, Levon’s daughter. Incredible version.

@@SolaceEasysorry u don’t get it
Brents too raspy for this. Ruined
Brent made this version in my opinion. He isn't shown once in the video either. Probably the best vocalist of the group
Devin Kochanasz Agreed. His high harmonies are magnificent and memorable.
are you stupid or something?
To each their own, of course... but you're fucking mental. Brent WAS soul.
Lol....
