Something should be said about Haley's stage presence. From the moment she walked on stage her poise and confidence had the audience eating out of her hand-before she ever sang a note! Haley instantly connected and made them feel like "her people" all the way through the number. She has a natural gift that is so rare among even more experienced vocalists. I don't believe Jeff is all that great a pianist but he's using his acting skills to the fullest-and it works. Of course having an amazingly talented band on stage is always a plus.
Haley and PMJ recently covered "Don't Speak" -- it's even better than their version of "Creep", which is really saying something.
I’ve loved Haley since (I’m ashamed to say it...) American Idol ten years ago. Her version of Benny and the Jets is still on my playlist. I had no idea about Jeff!
Thank you for spotlighting such a deserving performer Fil.
I had no idea Jeff was such a great musician. Wow. LOVE Haley. She is incredible.
Amen to that 🙏
Haley is one of a kind . A torch singer for sure!
THAT IS WHAT I LIKE FIL ALL GENRES , ALL MUSIC IS GOOD, AND GOOD FOR THE SOUL, THANKS FIL
Jeff's first love shines so brightly and he just loves to highlight the talent on stage !
Haley does a cover with Post Modern Jukebox of "Creep" that will give you goosebumps. Check it out.
You have terrific taste in music Fil. Thanks for featuring jazz in your show. I love the way you can break it all down.
Haley sang a terrific duet version of the jazz standard "Moanin'" with Casey Abrams on American Idol in 2011, It had a tremendous impact on the crowd, an all-out jazz number, with a lot scatting as well, in what's basically a pop show, the sort of thing you, and certainly the audience, never expected to hear. It's really well worth a listen. Haley had the Jazz in her even then. She also sang "Stepping Out with My Baby" in a duet with Tony Bennett in the finale, again showing her Jazz credentials.
Fil - I know I am late to the party here but I had to say how much I enjoyed this and all your analyses. You have, in addition to your musical talent, a real knack for talking about the work in a way that illuminates the subject matter without draining it of joy. Thank you! One of the keys to understanding Haley Reinhart is that she grew up jamming with a band. Her dad Harry is a blues/rock guitarist and her mom Patti is a singer. Their band Midnight covered classic sixties/seventies rock and Haley sang with the band throughout her childhood. Singing with a band is a good way to train your ear; many young artists today make a name for themselves online, working alone in their bedroom-studio, posting solo performances without ever collaborating with other musicians. I urge anyone who hasn't already seen it to check out Haley Reinhart Performs With Her Dad At Chess Records. Brilliant. They perform two songs, Can't Find My Way Back Home which is just heart-stoppingly beautiful and Don't Know How To Love You, a superb Haley original. Haley is such a vocal chameleon and can sing anything, but for me, these two are essential Haley Reinhart and a very revealing look at where she comes from and where she might be headed.
She's a goddess.
An old soul.
She's iconic. Timeless.
Not of this generation.
Her voice is mesmerizing.
Casts a spell on you.
I really would love to see her go full time into jazz.
Chris Fischer, a few years ago: "I had the honor of charting arrangements for Haley Reinhart during her stint on American Idol so it was so sweet to see her perform on my 'home stage'... She has such a sultry voice but has the chops and theory to hang with the 13th #11 chords with ease, a feat lost on a lot of the naive newcomers who think singing jazz is just putting on a long dress and scooping every note..."
Randy Jackson was Haley's nemesis on the show. Six years later he told her something he never told the audience:
"You are one of the ones that I really thought would have a career because doing that stuff you do with the jazz stuff is not easy. It's hard to do, and you sing it with more melody than a lot of the songs on the radio today. Some of them I love, but they're like four chords. So with four chords your melody is always going to be limited. With the jazz stuff, it's about singing through multiple chord changes. It's a very different thing, so your ear has to be trained so acutely, and then you also love the rock side."
Haley's version of "I Can't Help Falling in Love With You" will melt your pants.

Try Haley's live acoustic version of don't Know How to Love You with the Sacha Perz Orchestra in Austria. ua-cam.com/video/fbEW8BrNctI/v-deo.html
It has a tremendous emotional charge, more so than her official video version which is also very fine.. You can see herself affected by the performance here.
Mr multitalented Jeff Goldblum Along with Haley Reinhardt’s sensational silky voice...absolute class! Top analysis Fil! Cheers Mario!😀🤘👌
I've loved her ever since she was on American Idol. What a talent! (and good to look at as well)
If you've ever seen the animated show "F is for Family" on Netflix, Haley voices the red-headed son. Her versatility as a singer and her original songs are underappreciated because most people don't look at her body of work. This is an original song off her last album... "Honey there's the door:" ua-cam.com/video/-7RaBSPJrYM/v-deo.html
What a great combination! I love that smokey smooth voice!!! I have followed Haley from PMJ. Thank you Fil for your great analysis!
You are so good Fil at what you do and what you know! I appreciate you sharing your insights and expertise!
There is an element of performance here that includes control of the vocal in a mastery along with Jeff's playing and facial expressions while playing combines for a reenactment of the jazz performance experience.
She’s great, I love her “Mad World” with Puddles Pity Party (he would be a great analysis!). Never been a fan of Goldblum’s acting, he looks so much more at home seated at that piano, I never knew he could play!
I like his acting, but not so much his being himself.
Oh dear, I need to look up what she did with Puddles Pity Party (I kinda love Puddles!).
Linda Z it’s really good! 👍🏻
It is! An unlikely combo, and I wonder how she came to know him. Thanks for the tip!
@@lindaz1290 They both worked with Post Modern Jukebox individually, Scott Bradlee is an excellent arranger and brought them together!
Guilty of not knowing Jeff is a pianist, and had never heard of Haley. Now I'm a fan of both. Are you sure this wasn't a movie? The scripting was spot on. I definitely will listen (and watch) more of her videos.
Great Music Appreciation lesson today, Professor.
I'm out of words for how to explain the importance of the exposure of Haley on a channel like yours - her musicality, the band, everything!
Btw I loved hearing it, "She is THAT good"✨
I love the technical explanations of terms, Fil gives us! I must live under a rock...I never knew Jeff Goldblum played the piano! Thanks for another fascinating analysis, Fil. ;)
Me eitherr! Wow, so many years and I had no idea!
The first time that Jeff Goldblum made enough of an impression on me for me to pay attention to him was when he costarred with Ben Vereen in a TV series called "Tenspeed and Brownshoe". I had always heard he was a musician, but I can't ever recall seeing him do anything as a pianist.
Same here "Tenspeed and Brownshoe" in the 70s? Very funny .. :)
Haven't seen one of your reviews in many months. I love that swing and jazz have not totally died out. Actor Jeff Goldblum's surprise appearance as a musician greatly thrilled me a couple years ago.
What a beautiful woman and the voice is unbelievable. I love this song. Thanks again Fil. God bless.
She does the best version of Radiohead's Creep.
Wouldn't the best be Radiohead's?
mbsnyderc No. That’s very subjective. For example, I reckon Beatles’ rendition of “Yesterday” is the NOT the best version of that song.
@@mbsnyderc thats where you are wrong
Radiohead is great. PMJ/Haley's version is great in a different way. She is just mesmerizing -
I still come back to these analyses of yours, Phil. Another thing worth pointing out about this version of the song is its light-hearted playfulness. I've listened to a na umber of versions by various singers, but I've never heard one anything like this one. It's very original treatment of it. but then Haley often does this. Her version of "I Put a Spell on You" is another example of that originality and creativity.
Greetings Phil and this video and song makes me feel like I’m in a Las Vegas nightclub👉 Viva Las Vegas🎤
All these comments saying they didn't know Jeff was a musician is funny to me. He has had a jazz band for years and has even released albums.
these youngsters nowdays ha
This was Jeff's first Jazz album. Apparently Decca approached him after seeing one of his live shows. Google says Goldblum hadn't released an album until this album in 2018
This was so much fun and entertaining. Even more enjoyable when all the musicians are enjoying themselves. They really do draw you in to their performance.
Your demonstrations are very helpful. Thanks, Fil!
I highly value your analyses Fil, and I'm so glad you picked up on Haley (I thought it was just me). She deserves much more recognition than she receives. She's an extraordinarily gifted vocalist and has found her niche in Jazz singing - she feels it; as evidenced by her performance(s) and that makes her even that much more exceptional. The following covers are without equal: "Creep", "Seven Nation Army", "Oops. . . I did it again", "Black hole Sun" & "Santa Baby" (blows Ertha Kitt away) and the PMJ trio in which she performs "All About That Bass". And there are countless more. Thanks again Fil for your truly wide ranging analyses of different genres, it is greatly appreciated.
I enjoy how brave you are. To go beyond "I just like this" and present the analyses you do is something I think is well worth your time. Judging by the comments I have read, there are a lot of people who appreciate encountering your knowledgeable yet straightforward accounts of listening and viewing.
(I know I could have just typed "Rock". but it didn't seem enough :-)
Thanks!
WOW!! I've never heard of Haley Reinhart; she's fantastic! Love Jeff Goldblum, too; I knew he could play. LOVE getting introduced to good new music! Thank you, Fil; great analysis! I love it when you demonstrate with your own voice. I giggle, but I get an accurate understanding of the technique. 💖
Wow, what a voice!
Nice to learn of her.
I love this kind of jazz. The ending was great. Very funny and having fun. Thanks for posting.
Haley has an amazing voice. Only one other singer with that control and pureness is Linda Ronstadt who also did a big band album with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra. Such mastery!
Great analysis, Fil. Also, I didn’t know that Jeff played piano.
I only remember Haley from her American Idol days! ❤❤❤❤
Never heard of Haley Reinhart before. Thanks for bringing her to my attention Fil. She sounds great.
Holy moly! I wasn't even aware of Haley, but dang! That's the real stuff. Wasn't aware that Goldblum played piano either, but with those hands, it doesn't surprise me. Good stuff, thanks Fil.
Good stuff, thanks Fil for highlighting an artist I didn't know. As well, you are a great teacher, you highlighting how this composition is constructed is wonderful. The musical "and"; 1, 2, 3, 4, "and" 1, 2 etc.
I tuned in cause I hoped he was gonna turn into the fly. I've seen him play on a talkshow, and he's frigging good. Rock
Very Nice!
PMJ use some wonderful vocalists and Jeff is obviously in his element.
How about Morgan James and Scott Bradlee excelling on Take Me To Church...a real show off piece. Enjoyed this a lot
Morgan James is a goddess. I've seen her live and up close and she's just incredible. I've seen nobody who has gotten standing ovations like she did - and if Germans go wild you know something's up ;) It was her vocals on All About The Bass that drew me into exploring PMJ
Haley is brilliant - she should’ve won American Idol! Fil, check out Postmodern Jukebox on YT- she’s in that group - it’s all fantastic arrangements of classics of all kinds. Her fellow AI contestant and pal, Cory is an amazing bassist and singer, too. She sings my favorite version of Benny and the Jets.
You are absolutely right I saw them live last summer amazing ..highly suggest checking them out
I can't get enough of PMJ. so funky, so cool, so fun.
Absolutely love Haley's performance of Creep with Post Modern Jukebox, so blown away, have to keep going back!
This is cool. Used to listen to classic rock every day. Gone for over 2 years. Now a local jazz station in my car.
Just the other day, a tune played by Jeff and his band.
Sounded good.
btw, The Fly.
What an absolutely great performance, loved every minute of it.
Had no idea Geoff played the piano. Haley has a unique jazz vocal. Love it.
I only knew Jeff as an actor. I had no idea he played jazz piano. Haley takes me back to the classic jazz period. Great video and analysis. Thanks Fil.
damn love that smooth organ hangin behind it all. the sax was great!
Who knew? Did not know Jeff was a musician. I already love Haley. This was awesome. I really liked your explanation on head voice, chest voice and breath. Her cover of Radioheads' Creep has everything in it and more.
Now that was a pleasant surprise. Had completely forgotten about Haley. What a great critique.
I adore Haley , I found her on Post Modern Jukebox UA-cam channel , where she kick all kind of asses, in incredible one-take videos (by the way PMJ is fucking amazing)... her "Creep", "Mad world", "Black hole sun" covers are outstanding...
Fil mentioned Haley's control over different parts of her voice. An American Idol vocal coach said this after Haley's performance of "Blue" on the show: "I loved her. I think it’s really hard to do that with your voice, just to switch between that falsetto voice and your chest voice like that. That’s such a talent; not everybody can do that. For her to sing it so perfectly every time, I thought she was great."
Background: One night Haley's parents were impressed by young LeAnn Rimes yodeling as she performed "Blue" on TV. So seven-year-old Haley told them, "I can do that." Disbelieving, they were like, "Sure you can honey." Haley then demonstrated that she could. She had taught heself how to yodel after hearing Dolores O'Riordan of The Cranberries.
Awesome performance Haley is a phenomenal singer, absolute world class classy lady, with beauty to match .
Been loving Haley since American Idol, she should have won that year! I could listen to her sing all day and no Idea Jeff was so musical. Thanks again Fil.
Haley is one of the great voices around. Thanks Fil
Heh heh, I remember Jeff from the first 'Jurassic Park' movie! With his demeanor, it seems natural that he would be into some form of Jazz.😁 ...and Hayley, the walking, talking wet dream!😍 She could sing the phone book in a burlap sack and win a grammy!! That young lady definitely has some pipes. I really love the stuff she did with Casey Abrams, the crazy stand-up bass player.😉
Wow.never knew Jeff was a muso..pretty gd too!..love haley..she is not only Georgous.but she is one of the best female vocalists I've heard in a long time..she also did a trio with slash&myles kennedy.singing "wild horses"..and it was awesome ;)
I wouldn't thought of an analysis of these 2. I love both of them. You brought some folks with great talent into the spotlight for a moment. Thanx again. ✌️
So nice that people are continuing with this music. It's music I don't get to see in person because no one plays it. Not to compare music but Diana Ross does an album of Billy Holiday song(lady sings the blues) which I played a lot.I very much enjoy the big band jazz music Thanks for featuring this and let me know of other people who sing it !
marge lacosse,
Angelina Jordan covers a lot of classic jazz singers.
I did notice the swing intro in the beginning, love this style of music. Have you ever done a analyses of Brian Seltzer? Thanks again Fil for the variety of music you cover!
Yes he's here somewhere!
Liked before the video started because Jeff Goldblum is awesome. He’s been playing gigs in Los Angeles for years.
Another excellent comprehensive review Fil. It's great how you cover all aspects of a performance.
I didnt know Jeff played piano!
Thanks for the great analysis Fil. Thoroughly enjoying the tour you are taking me on through various genres of music and introducing me to performers I've never listened to before
Her version of The Animals "House of the Rising Sun" On America's got Talent, was Epic.
Gosh your good Fil. I enjoyed this. I'm starting my day out in a good mood! lol and I didnt know Jeff played piano. 😘💕💕💕💕😘
She is so amazing! Love her AND him!
Another surprising jazz musician probably known more for acting and comedy is Hugh Laurie
I would enjoy your reaction to old time jazz , Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald Duke Ellington Count Bassie ,Dizzy Gillespie.Sarah Vaughan. Old time Jazz.
There are two types of women in the world... Haley... And not Haley. She stands in a class of her own.
Another amazing analysis Fil! Always love how you explain even the little details so clearly that even I can understand! Also had no idea Jeff could play the piano! He is very talented! 😂 Lots of love to you Fil! You're the best! Looking forward to the next video! ❤🤗😘✌🙋♀️😂🤘 ROCK!!! 🤘
And her version of "Creep" with PVJ is great as well. Always learning from you Fil. You're great👍
Thanks!
FIL, THANKS FOR THE VIDEO AND YOUR GREAT COMMENTS,, I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF HALEY BEFORE, SHE IS SO SMOOOOOTH I WILL BE CHECKING INTO HER MUSIC NOW, THANKS TO YOU, , COUSIN FIGEL
I did not know Jeff Goldblum played Jazz piano. Thanks Phil.
Great vocals!♥️ LOVED her voice from the moment l first heard her on tv. Add Jeff on piano and the rest of the band on that jazzy tune and it's total ear candy. Sweeet! Great analysis Fil.😎🎼🎶🎵🇨🇦
Hi Fil !!! ...
I do love me some Haley Reinhart thank you for posting man.
Excellent! Haley is a real "killer-diller!" (A term used back during the era of the music)
Jeff Goldblum...continuing the Pittsburgh jazz traditions. 😊
Check out her cover, with Postmodern Jukebox, of Creep. Fantastic vocal!
Haley also does classic rock exceptionally well. She's developed a friendship with Robby Krieger of The Doors and will be performing with him and John Densmore later this month.
Excellent analysis.
Did you notice there was a Hammond organ playing some good riffs in the background but wasn't shown on the video?
Best wishes,
Rod
The best part of this series is Fil's 😁 smile
Love the bass 😍😍😍😍
Fil, thanks for the analysis. I like your presentation style and you really connect with the subject matter and the viewers.I always thought Haley sang well from American Idol, House of the Rising Sun which I had on my play list. About 6 months ago, looked her up to see what she was up to and saw she was singing the Extra Gum commercial, Can’t Help falling in Love. I always stopped and watched that commercial because it was done so well and then realized it was Haley singing. One video of the commercial had over 50million views. Who would have thought people would watch a commercial on purpose.
Great variety, Fil!
Haley is a great vocalist.
I have been listening to her since her run on American Idol.
What a great performance. Sultry, sweet jazz sung beautifully, with flawless musicianship....lovely. When you mentioned "quite obscure" when people sometimes think of Jazz...my first thought was being 19 and listening to John Mclaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra for the first time on vinyl. Blew my mind!! Now that music is technicalities to the max, amazing in it's own right, with no doubt, but not this lovely " hold me close" vibe. ..PS..you mentioned if Haley hadn't been given the spotlight, and all of the wonderful musicians we have in the world, it's so very true. I flash-backed to 1982-83, I was a cocktail waitress at The Hillside Jazz Club in Waterbury Ct with Mario Pavone, Dear friend Tommy Chapin (RIP) and so many more
Her (astounding) version of Creep has had 70 million hits
So appreciate your expert review!!!
" Radar Love" Golden Earring
I enjoyed it,Gorgeous Fil ! It soothed my soul tonite. 💋
That was a really amazing performance, Haley is awesome, I had never heard of her, and Jeff is such an entertainer... Thanks Fil...
I loved this!
Loved it all, sax was awesome, Haley is remarkable, and Jeff not too bad, himself!
I didn't know Jeff Goldblum played jazz piano. Hugh Laurie also plays jazz piano. Check out St James Infirmary.
