- This is the documentary assignment in my Final Cut Pro editing class at NYU. I opted to leave out the cheesy local news style scratch track and compose it using clips, trailers, music and b-roll.

Yeah, it is, but I thought that was poignant as well because so many women in our society have this nightmare relationship with food. She was starving and didn't even know it.

I agree. There's a gigantic gulf in talent between her and Julia Roberts. The Academy (at least at the time) was careful to acknowledge mold-shattering films like Aronofsky's by nominating them, but wouldn't dare actually give a top award to them.

She could have also tried doing volunteer work, reconnected with her son, and marion could have stopped seeing her dick therapist and tyrone and harry needed to avoid the heroin all together.

This movie made me uncomfortable like no other movie ever has. This, to me, is the closest representation of a nightmare. That being said, it's a great movie and I'm sure that was Aronofsky's goal
This nightmare is a reality for millions of people in the world, drug addiction is no joke. California is dealing with a major opiate epidemic. Especially herion. High school aged kids mess around with Vicodin or norco, they get hooked, eventually can't afford it, so they go to heroin which is stronger and much cheaper. I would know, it happened to me. Luckily I got out before it was too late.

they all did, jared leto was perfect example of heroin addict who is soo skinny cause he probably has HIV , Marion was perfect girl broken by drugs and able to humiliate herself and do anything to just get away from it all , just to forget what she has become , but yes amphetamine addiction is also exactly like that, you become dellusional you dont understand reality anymore and you are going onto hospital like this that you are complitely insane

The only thing more tragic than the film IMO is the fact that Ellen didn't win the oscar for the film.

She was competing against younger attractive Julia Roberts who was 31-32 and Ellen was already 67 at that time, you already know who the society will give more attention too.
Marlon Wayans was a revelation in this movie, the rest of the cast were well known for their acting abilities but Wayans I'd only ever seen in those daft comedies so wasn't expecting much but he more than held his own. It's a shame he never did more unusual movies like this.
He was in some ways the moral center of the characters. He was able to step away because he really wasn't all that addicted to the drug, he was addicted to the money and easy living. Great performance.
I hated that he was in a movie with this theme. He didn't fit. The movie was ok.
@@everythingviral972 That is just your opinion. He was outstanding in this as Tyrone. Also it was a relief, he was always doing comedy so this showed his range. Depressing, but a great movie that doesn't shy away from addiction.

hey, how are you so sure?, life is very long, and addiction doesn't understand of age, social class. bankolidays dates. It can happen to anyones. Seriously. The movie is not just about drugs, alcohol or another sustance like sleeping pill could be a problem, or gambling too. so nobody can say this wont happen to me

Is about fighting your own fears. nobody is free of having problems. the way we solve the problem is what make us different, more intelligent or more stupid. But this could happen to anyone if you don't know how to solves your frustrations and fears.

God his poor mother in this movie makes me cry, she plays the part so well and it just makes my heart break for her. Sidenote: Jared is AMAZING

Urban horror movie? With a horror movie comes the soothing fact that it's fictional. This movie, depicts something that is real, something we all deal with in our lives. This movie made me sick. It's abysmal. It's art. A fucking masterpiece.

Disturbingly beautiful realism
The scariest part is that I actually realised I am one of them. Not in the way of addicted through drugs, legal or illegal, but I've been addicted to technology, to the Internet, social medias, youtube etc. I constently do this, and in the movie we realise it's not only about drug addiction. It's about any kind of addiction - That it sometimes helps us fill the void inside and escape our ugly reality. That in some way creeps the shit out of me, especially in the end.
We are all adicted to something, no matter its size we all are. That transports us into our own world, where we don't think about the real problems in our life...That's the meaning of this movie to me

The good news is, internet addiction is a walk in the park compared to actual drug addiction. Like slight symptoms from vaccination versus actually dying from a virus infection. Be glad about your situation and do something about it.

we all have to keep ourselves busy. more than for an year I was depressed and did nothing. I stopped eating, stayed in bed, etc lost a lot of weight and used to feel dizzy.

Darren Aronofsky has got to be in the conversation as one of the greatest filmmakers of our time. The number of innovations in this film is staggering
Aronofsky, Ari Aster, David Lynch, Kubrick, Tarentino, and sometimes... Lars von Trier are/were the best in the biz.

Salo doesn't bother me, neither does your typical depressing movie (ala Schindler's List, Where The Red Fern Grows) but for some reason, this movie just puts me in a pit of despair.

It didn't depress me, it disturbed me, left me feeling gross, but didn't leave me with a total and complete bleak feeling of hopelessness.

If there was ever a film to keep people off of drugs, it's this one. I really think it should be shown in high schools. It's dark and harsh, but so is addiction.
The mood shifts as the film goes on and subtly details the decent into addiction (something I have dealt with in my past, so I speak from experience): It starts with just getting high with your friends and having a good time. But as time goes on and the addiction consumes you, you become more and more desperate for that one little feeling of happiness you get from your addiction. The ending to this movie always makes me both thankful my addiction never got that bad but sad as well, because the lives of these people are pretty much ruined.
Absolutely.....it may be harsh for kids to watch, but that is what they need. It needs to have a strong enough impact to deter them from taking that road. It is a dark road, sometimes a one-way f**king street to hell. This movie portrays that well.

But even if they will show this movie in the school. How do you think they won't try drugs one time in their life? the problem is that is so common to see someone drunk or high, that it makes you wishing of using at least just one time in life. Even if you are the most anti-drugs person. Also depends of the moment, mates, situations... is a very strong sociocultural that you don't realise how dangerous it is. Specially at the younger ages. I don't know the answer for prevention, but I know in my experience that the first drugs I took was my best friend who gave it to me at the age of 14. And also we are immense in an alcohol culture, which is the first drugs every one start with.

I watched this movie when I was around 11 years old. I have never touched a drug in my life.
I was already doing drugs before this movie. I was most likely high and doing drugs during the movie. I still do drugs to this day...well only weed which doesn’t count right?. I never once overdosed. I never got a limb cutoff because of infection from injection but then again I never injected heroin either so.
I’m guessing when you say “drugs” you are referring to psychoactive drugs. Have you ever consumed alcohol? Caffeine? Certain foods and diets affect gut biome which can alter the mind in radical ways. Have you ever loved someone? Ever felt the rush of a song? In effect, you have done drugs.

I was an extra in Requiem for a dream and it was truly an amazing experience! I admittedly did annoy director Darren Aronofsky a little bit ("But sir, I can say lines really well! I can speak!" LOL!); He eventually unofficially named me "Sir Blur", advising me that my role was to not be seen onscreen, to just be a "blur" at most! LOL! It was still a majorly fun time to be had, as Marlon Wayans was hysterically funny onset! had a blast!

30stmFantasy Geez... I've seen it a bunch of times. I love it and how amazing it is. My fiancé is a paramedic and he said a lot of this in the movie is realistic (some towards the end isn't) but most throughout is. Especially Sara's story.
I've never watched a movie similar to that one. It took me days to completely shake off the feeling of hopelessness. The soundtrack is like a train into the abyss that takes me with it. I never watched it completely again. It just takes a few minutes to watch, and I'm down there again.
Everything is right with this masterpiece.

Just watched it all the way through for the first time. It's devastating, but it's also very kinetic and exciting. I've never seen anything like quite like it.
I don't even know what to think of this movie. I just finished watching it maybe 20 minutes ago and I'm just letting it all sink into my brain. I can't explain why I like it, but I do. That much is for sure..

This is the most terrifying movie I have ever seen. And I was a horror movie reviewer for a while.....But this? This is REAL terror. It is, most definitely, an urban horror story. And something I feel everyone should see.
Modern masterpiece. Technically innovative, thematically haunting and emotionally annihilating. No one will ever forget the first ever time he/she watched this movie.
On a thematic point, I had a thought when I watched this some years ago, and that was the idea of catastrophic, self-destructive, gravitational downfall, which dominates the second half of this movie (winter). It is obviously heart-wrenchingly difficult to watch the characters suffer as they do (and with no end in sight- the ending does not indicate the end of their suffering and may even imply a much longer continuation of it), but the real touching element is how on one level the main character (Jared Leto) does seem to have it all: he has a mother who loves him and cares for him (despite her unhealthy obsessions), a beautiful girlfriend whom he loves and who loves him in return, and a good friend who does not give up on him no matter what. These touching elements are seen in some pivotal scenes leading to the giant climax, namely the scene where Harry calls Marion one last time, the scene where Ty holds onto his hand (non-infected) even as they are about to be interrogated by white racist cops, and the final illusional scene where Sara dreams of finally going on television and is greeted by a standing ovation, not least by the surprise guest, his son Harry, all dressed up and smart-looking (total contrast to reality). Amidst all the painful craziness that buzzes around them as they make for a seismic freefall, these brief yet powerful snippets show just how emotionally and socially complete these characters are, which is ironic because throughout the movie we see them crave endlessly for material/substance when on a more basic level there really is no need to crave. This further underlies the tragedy of it all as the addictions of these characters, which on one level are totally unnecessary and inessential, completely destroy these characters’ otherwise healthy existence. Brutal.
Very well put indeed. Aronofsky sets it all up, doesn't he? They're all just like us, initially - happy, in love and what not. Drugs are just a recreational activity at that point. But that's when the addiction hits and before you know, you're spiralled into the darkness and the abyss. I think most viewers are awestruck by the movie because of how the mood gradually changes from happiness to despair to absolute hell. That's how drug addictions are, or even just all kinds of addictions. It starts with a brief moment of enjoyment and then you want to have it more and more. Before you know it, you're fucked.
An addiction is the only thing that makes you hate yourself, and that speaks for it.

I moved back to Coney Island just before they started filming this, I recall seeing them from time to time working on it. I grew up around those rides, the thunderbolt ride my step Dad worked on. It truly is nostalgia and I knew a lot that wasted themselves in Coney Island, so this movie really was very realistic to me anyway.
I've seen this movie 3 times, and I'm only more moved every time. I don't know if I'm sick, but I just love it, though definitely not in an 'I enjoy it' kind of way. I don't know if that makes sense... (By the way, did anyone else notice that Jared Leto doesn't actually sound like Harold, but he has the voice for the interview?).
He presents grim situations beautifully without tossing the ugly side of it to the curb. π has many of the same characteristics.
Trust me you're not sick, I've seen the movie at least a dozen times now and it still scars me damn near every time. I first saw it last year and it left me in tears for the rest of that night and the day following it. I definitely get what you mean by the not "I enjoy it" kind of way. I love it and hate it so much because I saw parts of myself within every character (which I assume others did as well) especially when it came to Sara's struggle with her self-image and addiction. Also, that fucking refrigerator gave me nightmares I swear. I wanted to punch my own refrigerator afterwords.

You're definitely not sick, or at least there's a bunch of others that are sick in a similar way, if that makes it any better. There was a time where my friends and I got into drugs in high school. We started with weed, soon to be followed by mushrooms, LSD, MDMA.. We used to watch this movie very often, as if it reminded us never to try the even "harder" drugs like heroine and so on. One time, this one buddy of me, I think it was when Marion was selling her body for the first time, told us to please pause the movie. He left the room and said he just couldn't continue watching it. It was the last time we watched it as a group, but I think it's still very much in our minds. I was wondering whether people with some sort of history in terms of drugs are more prone to what this movie does to everyone, have you ever consumed a drug other than alcohol and cigarettes?

ME TOO! I haven't stopped thinking about it since. The editing, score, and Ellen Burstyn's performance were the best things about this film. It is really great all the way around though. The film is so disturbing, yet an achievement in filmmaking.
The Film Effect Its one of my favorite movies now. The ending was terrifying with the shock therapy and everything.
Watching this movie was the most masochistic thing I've ever done. I think it's going to be a long time before I can gather up enough courage to watch it again and unearth some of the little gems Darren put in there for us.

This movie is absolutely amazing, one of my favorites. I've seen it a few times and it still holds up, but there is nothing like the first time you watch it, and then just sitting there and reflecting on everything that just happened.
I can so relate to this. The first time I watched was in my room in university. After the movie ended, I sat still for 15 minutes before I wanted to go out and tell my friends about it. This movie is right up there in my list and needless to say, Aronofosky is a genius.

Requiem for a Dream is one of my favorite movies of all time. In my top 5 of the decade for sure.
It's one of those unforgettable movies.
I feel that every parent should show this movie to their kids when they think it's appropriate. Preferably when they turn around 12. It's very graphic and harsh, but it's reality and eye changing. I've been into drugs for years and I thouht I loved it and always denied my addiction. Trouble caught up to me and I still denied it. After watching this movie, I never wanna even see drugs again. I'm glad I never got this bad and I'm glad I came across this movie. This takes away the glamor that us teenagers see in drugs. This shows the truth about how things end up. It shows the whole story and I plan to show all my friends this movie and hope they feel the same way I do. Please share this movie and make people aware.
It's to disturbing to show it to a 12 year old. I would say 16 is the minimum age to watch this and 18 the recommended.

I am so glad Ellen Burstyn used the word "delusion" in this video. Nailed addiction and how it affects people inside and out perfectly. But is the saddest movie I have ever seen. I know I am not the only one that can relate to it almost 100 percent, that is the saddest part when you look at your own life/(delusions God forbid)...

This movie reminded me of all the times me and my 5 friends would ALWAYS hang out on the weekends at our houses by ourselves. It started with just smoking bowls of weed then tripping acid and doing bars and snorting MDMA and fucking with coke. Ive had some of the best times then and the love and friendship we had for each other was something out of a dream, but now were all separated and deteriorating. It wasn't the drugs, it was our addictive personalities and the hardest withdraw was when everything fell apart and we were separated from one another. I still smoke weed here and there but those hard drugs and memories will scar me for a long, long time This movie makes me dwell on things i shouldn't.
no, but i consider 25i a hard drug and its very similar acid. Ive taken more 25i than i have taken acid and i had a friend who overdosed from 25i more than once.

Dude, you did an amazing job. You managed to capture the aura of the film itself as well as the actors. It really is "an urban horror story". The first time I saw it was 8 months after I lost my first friend to a heroin overdose and only 2 months after I lost my boyfriend to the same. I actually had to leave the room halfway through. It was that powerful. A++, man.

I could only see this movie once a year. Not because it was bad, but the way it handles tragedy is damn honest.
Watched it at highschool about 15 years ago, traumatized me but at the same time fascinated me. I even bought the dvd and just watched it once, makes me feel weird and sad for a few days.
It's so weird to hear Jared without the NY accent. And I have to remind myself that that really is Jennifer (my mind keeps switching to the Labyrinth Jennifer though, which totally messing things up). Such an amazing movie.

"REQUIEM FOR A DREAM" is hands down in my Top 10 favorite films of all time. The cast is absolutely brilliant...especially the beautiful Ellen Burstyn. Afronosky's primal filmmaking, the score, editing, cinematography...the BEST title sequence ever in film, hands down. Afronosky is right up there with the best directors of this generation, including Tarantino, De Palma, Burton, Cameron, etc. The thematic elements of the film, displaying just how far us human beings will go to chase our dream, is nothing short of haunting. This film is one of the greats to show what true filmmaking is capable of.

I think the 2000s really expanded filmmaking on a more psychological level. This is my second favorite movie of all time after Mulholland Drive which came out a year later. Both have some similar themes if you really analyze them.

I adored this film, I think because it is so true to life and relatable yet not overworked but then again I sort of got side tracked by the fact Jared Leto looks EXACTLY THE SAME sixteen years on. The man does not age.
I love this movie, I can watch it any time. Nothing I’d go to sleep to or watch for fun, but I’d watch it to show someone, amazing movie

I've watched this movie about 7 times and each time I find something new I missed the last time.
The music brought me to see the movie, and when i watched it it brought back so many bad memories and traumas i had experienced because i am a recovering from drugs but it made me feel confident and happy that i have quit and didnt end worse and worse like the charachters in the movie. Thank God!
You can distance yourself from the story by saying "I'm not addicted" or "I'm not poor" but eventually you have to come to the truth that we are all addicted to something. We all need something and that is our weakness. We just need to be ok with ourselves and stop searching to fix ourselves.

This movie is my favorite because it stopped me.
I have a lot of sleep problems and no matter how much I eat, I'm always hungry, both of which I'm irritated by. I thought about taking pills both for sleeping and so I wouldn't eat, but this movie made damn sure I would never want to even glance at a bottle of pills ever again,
After probably 15 years I finally dared to watch it again. Really heavy stuff. That I still remembered.
The ending scenes will make you really uncomfortable.
If you can endure claustrophobic anxiety - a must watch

Oh man. What a powerful story & amazing cast.
This is one of the cinematic masterpieces of my generation. I've never before nor since seen a film that portrays addiction in such a true and honest fashion, to the point that the film is truly horrifying and disturbing to watch at times. So true to life... This film should be shown in "health" class (or whatever they're calling it these days) -- talking about drugs and the dangers and pitfalls is one thing, but to see it brought to life in all the vividness and terror is this movie is something else.
I will never forget the afternoon where a group of my friends watched this... Once the credits rolled we all sat there in silence, awe and shock for a good five minutes before anyone could muster a word.
