I hope you enjoy and thank you for voting! Which other movies would you like to see analyzed, and what were your thoughts/theories around Requiem for a Dream? I would love to discuss!!
I relate so much to Sara. Ive lost something that was never really there. I was told I had to love my family no matter what. That my feelings spawned by trauma or unnecessary. Im done lying to myself and the consequences of speaking out is isolation.
you should do trainspotting
Great job on the video BUT you forgot the VJ (VIDEO JOCKEY) character Tappy in the movie and his addiction to his TV game show and the sound of his own voice.... fyi. "WE GOT A WINNER!"
Nice work, Thanks!
What an excellent analysis! I loved your take on it more than the movie
A requiem is also a piece of music played at a funeral mass. So it could also be like a funeral for their dreams.
That's an excellent point! The movie is very much the death/destruction of their potential. Thank you so much for watching!!
Or death for a dream 😥
When I originally looked up, "Requiem For a Dream" way back in 2006, what came up was, "Death of a Dream".
Requiem translated to, "Death Of". Interestingly enough, I cannot find that anywhere, lately.
I'll never forget reading it and realizing the title of the movie meant, "Death of a dream".
No shit, Sherlock. That´s why it´s called a requiem/Totengesang
@@Marauder1981 ok Sherlock, didn’t have to be a dick about. I was telling for other people who didn’t know.
The non-high characters seeming one-dimensional is actually genious. High people interact with sober people and remember such interactions in a more rigid and methodical way. They just are trying to be normal and focusing on not seeming high as fuck during their interactions with sober people. So that's why they think of sober people as one dimensional because they are always on guard and taking things as surface level as possible to keep it simple to act sober. It's brilliant, really, to depict this in the way he does.
Underrated explanation.
wow you truly hit nail on the head here.
As a teenager high in high school. Eventually as you progress you start to realize just how naive most people are. My mom thought I was high or on drugs almost always at the times I was dead sober, and before I started down the path of H. Then while I was high AF she would say, “you’re finally being the real Justin again.”
It's not just that - a lot of regular folks are so busy and uninformed that they blame addicts for their addictions and are cruel as a result. It's not just the addicts delusional view of them.
@@justinTime077 that's because we were high so much, while lying to our loved ones that we weren't, they thought that was normal us... People are so busy these days it's practically impossible to do anything other than make assumptions based on observation and past patterns of behavior (if you lied and hid your use, is it your mom's fault for being naive? you hid the drug use, she wasn't as naive as you may think, but trusting of her child who she loves and believes)
It's very difficult to be anything but naive if you've not lived the addict experience.
As a recovering addict , I have always loved this movie. I watch it every time I think of relapsing to remind myself that it’s not worth it. It’s such a dark yet beautiful film , it shows how easily happiness is found yet how easily and tragically it can be lost.
Man.. i feel the same way dude..
Battled addiction over 10 years.. but ive been clean for 3 now. I watch this movie once a year or so, and other movies/documentaries with similar subject matter. Helps me cope with shit, gotta take it one day at a time, its the best we can do bro ❤
hope you're still clean and doing good, I'm proud of you
I watched it a lot prior to stocking a needle in my arm. I had a strange fascination and looking back it was no surprise that I did what I did.. now i can look at this movie and say, no thanks, not for me, no more!
When I first watched this movie when I was 17 I was already into my own drug addiction and it kinda rained on my parade. Shit got bad after that. My mom is strung out on amphetamines (from a Dr) and my grandma has Alzheimer's as a direct result of benzo and alcohol abuse. I basically lived this movie, jail, pimping my gf, almost getting shot, etc.
I'm 4 years clean now and I watched the movie again today and got physically ill. Glad I made it thru everything but being able to say "my life is like requiem for a dream" is wack
ME TOO.
I hope you are staying strong. Forgive yourself, forgive your family. That will be a key to unlock the door to walk out of addiction and keep that door shut locked once you pass through. Keep strong. Keep your head up!
You did something not many can do. Be proud of yourself. So happy to hear you got out of that life! Keep it up! ❤
That cool !
Congratulations on 4 years clean: that's huge.
I just watched this today by myself and once the credits rolled I was just stunned. Watching it alone enhanced the experience but also made it scarier
Just watched it by myself. I’m not ok 😭
As a person with anxiety, this movie was so unsettling to watch. It got harder and harder as the movie went on, you could feel the uncomfortable feeling, guilt, innocence being taken, and the all around on the edge feel. Gosh they all played their part to the perfect detail
Try watching it on shrooms. It hits hard. What a trip
@@DaleCarlson-tl5vdAbsolute madman
I work at a hospital and We were talking about drug seekers at work and I was telling my co workers how ppl expect opiates to numb physical pain but don’t realize it also numbs emotional pain. And getting that final “break” from emotional pain is often how addiction starts and thrives. I’ll never forget the first time I sno*ted h, it was like for the first time in 7 years I actually felt good and not constantly drowning in sadness and hopelessness. It was the ultimate break from cold reality. I used on and off for 6 years as a functioning “part time addict” before I finally threw in the towel 4 years ago and was just done. This is a brilliant analysis, thank you for this.
This is so touching to read, I'm always offering the research-related observations, but it's always so important to hear personal insights like yours, as I believe it elevates the conversation to a much deeper and impactful level. I'm so glad you shared this because someone may be reading it who really needed to. Thank you for your kind words and for your input, and I'm so happy to hear things are better for you! All the best!!
@@lucasblue20 this was a such a sweet genuine response thank you so much 😊
1 year next month off of methadone!
as someone who only has their grandma in their life, who worries about them all the time, this movie really broke me with Sarah. I wish I could just hug her and take care of her
As someone who grew up in addiction riddled community and suffered from heroin addiction beginning at 14 years old, you nailed this evaluation.
The movie also nailed the depiction of the isolation, trauma, and self-destructive tendencies; the damage dishonesty within a family unit causes as well, but that dishonesty is a symptom of the previously mentioned issues.
When I was young, we watched this and we would laugh.. now I know better.
Anyone out there currently using narcotics, I beg you to consider long-term ramifications; they may numb your awareness of the pain, but those internal issues fester while you are blind to it and, one day, it will all come crashing down on you.
I remember watching this movie in 5th grade of school in 2004. Organized by 10th grader sister for 10th graders, behind closed doors (because of pegi rating), during the week of addiction prevention theme in school. She thought it would be a good idea to let me watch too. I was terrified, but this movie has changed my life. I swore to myself to never try heavier than weed drugs, to not end up in addiction like film heroes.
Terrific movie, terrific soundtrack by clint mansel and played by kronos quartet, 10/10 movie about addiction.
Yeah after watching this, I had the same thoughts! I was like high schoolers should study this movie in English class. I think the students would be entertained, they would be able to study thematic storytelling, and they would be left with the impact of that ending which may help them abstain from drugs in the future. And yes, the movie is fantastic and the soundtrack is perfection! Thank you so much for watching!!
Thank you for posting the review!
Dude no 5th grader should be watching this, not even a 10th grader
@@22Hammy Definitely not a 5th grader but I think 10th is fine. This shit exists and it sucks. A lot of kids my age need to realize that fact. Seeing a movie like this would probably do that, at least for some of them. There's always gonna be ones who just don't give a shit or wouldn't take it seriously.
@@22Hammy May have been true well over 20 years ago but in this day and age, the younger you can teach them to be careful the better, 5th grade or not. Drugs and addiction do not discriminate.
Only an addict with their mind still intact can truly confirm just how realistic this movie’s portrayals are I think. Take that from me. It is nearly a documentary.
You think your mind is intact bro… anyone, sober or not can tell this is a masterpiece… get clean bro… it ain’t worth it.
I beleive the film and the music are the most iconic of a whole era, especially the music. Like the Godfather's music for the 70's, the Requiem for a dream is the same for the 00's.
Yeah, I've beard the music all over the place. It's amazing.. most people probably don't know it was the score to this amazing movie.
my whole interpretation about this was how drugs promise a way they can achieve their "dream" only for it to bring them farther away from it and get taken advantage of.
I was probably just a few step away from being another Harry. Somehow saved myself.
To non-addict people it might seem like a movie, but for some it is the unescapable reality they are living. I hope everyone a better life!
Great movie, great analysis!
So happy to hear you’re doing better my friend, and thank you for your kind words and personal insights. All the best to you!
You absolutely nailed the analysis and if you also recognize that each character ends up in a fetal position which I thought was interesting and symbolic
Thank you so much! And I didn’t catch that, I’m gonna look for that the next time around. I can already speculate on the many things it could mean, thank you so much for your input and for watching!!
saw this movie when I was 12 years old and honestly it shaped my outlook on drugs ever since.
Requiem for a dream is the first movie where it was physically hard to watch and sit through towards the end in a good way though. Truly a beautiful movie
I always thought "requiem" meant an emptiness or a void where something should be, like in this case, a "dream." I felt this the strongest at the end of the movie when Harry wakes up and says Marion's name. The nurse tells him she'll be sent for, and she'll come, but the realization hits him that she won't, and it's suddenly like a nightmare he can't wake up from. It reminds me of the feeling you get when you have a dream of winning the lottery, but you somehow become aware of the dream while having it, and realize you can't take that good thing with you to reality when you wake up no matter how bad you want to.
But at the same time... When you have a nightmare, you get the biggest sigh of relief when you wake up and realize that it was all a dream. So I guess it goes both ways lol - having a good dream; and having a terrible nightmare.
@IdOnThAvEaUsE69 a good dream that turns into a nightmare.
A Requiem isn't just a remembrance, but a piece of work, used to remember something that is gone forever. It's most often a piece of music performed in remembrance of someone that has died. This movie, and the source novel, are works in remembrance for the dreams of the addicts that have now died. They'll never have those dreams, they'll never live the lives they were working towards, and all they can do is remember what they once hoped for and find comfort in the fact that they once thought it possible.
Totally brutal
Also at 12:24 you say Marion just wanting to get another injection. Marion only sniffs heroin it’s Harry and Tyrone that shoot. That’s why whenever there’s a montage you can see 2 montage of shooting up, and one montage of sniffing. She only sniffs.
I noticed that too!!
Yes but drug addiction gets worse so she might sniff later on
I think you broke down everything perfectly. I could've never thought that the split screen and the boardwalk scene meant something. I finally watched the film after avoiding it for a long time. It was what I expected it to be and had a strong message.
I’m so glad you finally got to see this, it’s one of my favourite films. And thank you so much for your kind words, I’m really glad you enjoyed! I can’t exactly remember what I said about the split-screens and boardwalk, but this movie pierced me, so I feel like it all really connected with me. Thank you again so much for watching!!
Requiem for a Dream is one of the best Horror movie films ever. Yes I said it. Horror movie. This is just very haunting no matter how many times you revisit it. There are no supernatural elements involved. There is no creature, or a deranged psycho with a knife chasing everyone around. Not even a jump scare. Addiction itself is the actual monster. It comes for everyone and ravages them. We see how all characters will find themselves in shithole they will never be able to climb out of.
This is one of those movies I always say that everyone should see at least once. One thing this movie does excellently, to me, is how it depicts the character’s casual drug use rapidly evolves in to full blown “sell your soul” addiction. The one thing this movie didn’t nail, in my opinion, was how quickly it portrayed the male characters would use their drugs. The ritual of preparation is almost as important as the actual using itself. Even in the throes of debilitating withdrawal while searching, finally having the “drug of choice” in their possession will alleviate some withdrawal symptoms almost immediately. Also, an addict doesn’t wait until they are sick to look for the drugs they know they are going to need to make it through the day, and sometimes will even save enough to curb sickness later so as to function normally day to day. The high functioning addict is a rare breed however.
This comment is really good , I grew up with addicts and tried many things, I remember this guy who was on speed he would spend long time to prepare a line for him and others also I knew a guy that would go literally across entity line in Bosnia to acquire drugs but he wouldn't wait for withdrawal to begin instead as he wokes up he would go gather money and went there to buy it.
This is an important movie and I wish it had more publicity at the time. Your review of this film is exceptional. Well done.
I totally agree, luckily it has stood the test of time and can be discussed on platforms like this today. And so glad to hear you enjoyed the video, thank you so much!
watched this movie after my first time in rehab. stayed with me. now years later, after another rehab stint, this analysis came up. made me cry. definately the best film on the horrors of addiction and your insight is amazing
I’m a addict survivor sober 4 years ❤️❤️ I’m now a speaker and advocate as my recovery was amazing thanks to everything and one around me. I died twice in hospital during the year of my life that I became sober. Death itself from what I’ve been through and seen through my own eyes isn’t like the ending of this film. So I don’t get as scared by the ending as my experience was very different. The things that do run through your mind are very very different, well were for me. But if I can I get people to try and have a look at this. It’s helped so many

Thank you for helping people to track the meaning and symbolism of great, and/or obscure, and/or misunderstood, important films like this one. As for myself, having lived with a genius addict for 7 years, I have no desire or need to see this film, as much as I admire Aranofsky's work. I've lived inside that world, and lived through my own personal struggle in healing from being a part of it. I know it inside out, not simply because I lived through it, and don't assume, reader, I mean anything that simplistic. It's because I took the time during and afterwards, with support, to agonizingly pull it apart, piece by piece, within myself as an intimate and codependent, to understand what drove me into it, that I can say what I say. For many who've been there, and from what I've seen of this film, many in recovery as well as on the peripheries, who can benefit deeply from Aranofsky's essay on addiction.
This movie and transpotting should be show in all high schools.
This videos deserves more views, amazing analysis of this movie!!
This means so much to me, thank you!! I’ll keep creating!!
A brutally unforgettable masterpiece that shook me every time 😢😢😢😢😢
The last time I watched this movie I was a teenager and all I took away from it was "Don't do drug n-kaaaaay." I definitely need to revisit this one.
Haha i know, this movie should be in the curriculum at every high school. It's quite the deterrent
this movie is so honest abt addiction. also basketball diaries. kind of makes me sick when i watch them. it makes me feel the pain like i dealt w it yesterday.
This movie also gave me the same feeling as basketball diaries :(
at 36 after experiencing a lot of things, this movie is quite shocking.
I've always had a huge issue with escapism and i've always been that guy who tells people the hard truths(mostly just because that's how i see things) so anything that has to do with not facing the truth, to me is a HUGE problem.
I keep telling people how awful our civilizations have become that we do not treat our weak and needy at all, and leave them to a life of disparity.
these are really bad times and i really hope things get better.
I was living in NYC when this movie came out , and I must say its the reality we face every single day. I left NYC as fast as I get there
9:13 the third rule of The Month of Fury can be found as an easter egg on the DVD
Great Video! I really think this is one of the best films to point out the "Good movies are not the same as happy movies" problem. Eery once in a while i get the question Did you enjoy the movie, and sometimes the anwser is no dispite the fact the movie is really good
Third rules is: No orgasms for a month
Such an awesome analysis. Like how you focused on the theme of solitude. Movie makes me want to phone home more often.
Yeah I believe good friends and family are the best thing to keep you on the right path in every sense, it’s always good to call. Thank you so much for watching! And I’m so happy you enjoyed!!
Absolutely fantastic analysis. Thank you so much for this. I've been putting off this movie for a decade, and feel a little more complete understanding it now.
I watched the movie for the first time last night without doing any research about the movie. I did not expect it to be such a great movie.
This movie makes me think so hard that for whom I am the most sorry for. Most frightening movie of all time which is way more realistic than any ghost movie. AS ALWAYS You nailed the analysis.
Yeah ik it’s so scary and saddening. The harsh realities of the real world today will always be the scariest things to me just like you’ve said. It’s tough to watch but the movie does a great job at using darkness to perfectly convey its meaningful message. And I’m so glad you enjoyed the analysis! Thank you so much for watching!!
Great Analysis like always!
Love your voice and love the content! ❤️ I haven't seen this movie, and this is the closest I will ever get to watching it. I can watch the conjuring or insidious movies alone in a dark room at 3am, but this kind of emotional movies scare me more. Haha.
Keep up the great work, Lucas Blue! ❤️
Thank you so much! And yes!! This movie is 20 times scarier than supernatural/slasher horror films for me too. Like you said, the tragedy and reality of it is terrifying. But thank you again, I’m so glad you enjoy, this means so much!!
Amazing analysis! You really gave me a whole different view
This is so great to hear, thank you so much!!
Just watched this film for the first time and quite a ride! I struggle with drug addiction myself and this film has definitely made me rethink! I am also by myself so much so can totally relate to these characters trying to fill their loneliness
You alright man?
This movie made me tremendously scared for my son. Even tho he’s 4 I want to show him this movie whenever he’s older so he can see the impact of drugs.
Brilliant. One of the greatest movies ever Made. Props to Hubert Selby Jr. The author of the book.
Thank you!! Most uploads purporting to be an analysis of (insert topic) are often little more than rants elevating, or denigrating aforementioned topic, your observations are truly analytical. Satisfying, too!
Your comment regarding Sara’s vanity -the inter-title text @9:45 - would have been appreciated by the novel’s author, Hubert Selby jr. IMHO
Wow thank you so much for this! It's so fulfilling to hear when my ideas are valued and appreciated, so this means so much to me! I'll keep this style of analysis coming, thank you again!!
Really good video. Interesting that you opted to go without a soundtrack to support your voiceover. I remained engaged without it, so well done.
Thank you so much! So glad you liked this one! And yeah the music throws me off every time I try it haha so I just leave it for the outro and intro. I think it’s because I want the channel to be as intimate and personal as possible. But I’m so glad the video stayed enjoyable! Thank you so much for this!!
So true, drug addiction does leave you isolated. An example a mother who has 2 children dies in a n apartment alone because she chose not to raise either of them. Now what’s left behind? The scars of her addiction on lives that had nothing to do with said addiction. Sometime the choices we make can have untold consequences.
Great video man, the immense work you put into it shows
Thank you so much my friend, so glad you enjoyed. Many more to come!
Your analysis of Requiem for a Dream was amazing. Thank you. Well done.

Well put together - I’m subscribed
This movie was so grievously overlooked. It first of all has stark realism even if it is made unbelievable by the artistic and creative choices used to convey it. It was so well done all around.
This is so well put. Good video man 👍
More than about drug addiction, the story is about dreams being ruined and turning into nightmares. Each character has a dream
Tyrone wants to escape the Ghetto life
Harry wants to spend his life with Marion
Marion wanted to design clothes and be with Harry
Sara wanted to feel better about herself, and be admired.
Its because of these dreams that they even started messing with drugs in the first place. Tyrone and Harry start selling dope to have enough money to escape the Ghetto life, and start a clothing store for Marion. Sara wanted to lose weight. But in the end
Tyrone loses his freedom
Harry loses his arm and Marion
Marion lost her dignity and will probably OD to death
Sara lost her mind
This movie is so sad and tragic , you can only watch it once . The mom breaks my heart. Good movie though.

This is my favorite movie and this is my favorite analysis of it I’ve ever seen. So great we’ll done
What a good analysis, very insightful! I´ve just re-watched the movie after many years and it left an even greater impression on me this time.
This isn’t only an explanation of the movie. It’s an explanation of many people’s life. Crazy how when this movie came out I didn’t hardly understand it. Plenty of seemingly minor parts have much deeper meanings from the zooming in of the eyes to show pupil constriction and dilation depending on the drug and its effect on the eyes. The way you describe drug addiction is so painfully true that it hurts to even realize that is exactly the cause and the effect. crazy. This video gives you a quick feeling of the whole movie. Painful and confusing. Just like life itself.
The fact that what makes this movie a masterpiece is that these things happen in almost everyone's life. I mean i myself have been through a minor version of all the things these characters weng throught. Though a much less severe version of it. That's life, people WILL fail in life, eventually, and At some point deny it so they will just keep reminsing their happy memories or do drugs, smoke cigarettes, fuck, spend most of their times with othet people ( like their friends) to forget, but at the end of the day we're just lonley and have to face uo to things, like the promises we broke, and the dreams we failed to reach. And maybe the expectations we failed to fulfill. What i have figured out is that life should not be taken that much seriously, i try to think of it as a Sureeal movie, where nothing has to make sense anymore, i just watch through most of the things and try not to take anything that seriously, specially NOT living up to anybody's expectations, including my own.

Requiem for a Dream stands out because it defies the Hollywood formula that insists on happy endings. Not every story needs, or should, end on a positive note-this is reality, and life isn’t always kind. The film embraces that truth, showing the brutal, unforgiving nature of addiction without offering any illusions. It’s raw, unfiltered, and refuses to sugarcoat its message, which is why it resonates so deeply.
In contrast, so many of today’s films feel shallow, catering to audiences who just want to feel good and avoid the discomfort of confronting life’s harsher truths. People have become conditioned to expect positivity, craving easy, uplifting endings instead of engaging with the complexities of real life. The art of cinema is often reduced to mere entertainment, losing the raw, challenging power that films like Requiem still hold.
What elevates this film even further is the artistry in every element, especially the music and editing. Clint Mansell’s haunting score is an integral part of the experience, building an emotional atmosphere that amplifies the characters’ descent. The rapid, disorienting editing style-those quick cuts and intense sequences-mirrors the spiraling chaos in their lives, making you feel the overwhelming tension and collapse. It’s not just a story, it’s an experience, with every frame, note, and edit designed to reflect the beauty and tragedy of life itself.
Requiem is a meditation on how we chase dreams, often to our own destruction, and the devastating consequences when those dreams are unattainable. It’s one of the few films that dares to show life as it truly is-not the version we wish it would be. Films like this hold a different kind of power, one that lingers long after the credits roll, reminding us that not every journey ends well, and that’s what makes the experience so profound.
Just finished this movie like 2 mins ago. It really hit personally to me for reasons I won't disclose but it hurt my heart to watch it and I appreciate your video on it so much. Thank you
I watched this movie recently for the first time and this was a very good analysis. thank you!
Totally my pleasure, thank you! And I hope you enjoyed the film!
the analysis was great. huge tnx
Great analysis! I'm not a big fan of Aronofsky as techniques and effects serve to get across quite simple messages but your break down is absolutely perfect.
Thank you so much! I can totally understand that even though I've only seen two of his movies. I feel like it works effectively here, but with Mother I can see how the 100's of symbols in that movie seem kind of unnecessary or overbearing for how simple the message is. But also Mother is one of my favorite movies to discuss because it's so polarizing. I gotta see more of his films though because I love his ambition even though it may not always work perfectly. But thank you so much for watching! So happy you enjoyed this one!!

Bravo. Except there is no food addiction, she was just enjoying the little pleasures of a relaxed life, like the box of chocolates every now and then. She got conned by doctors and sees food as a temptation but it wasn’t so.
I've just finished the book, and she is definitely addicted to food and the TV to begin with. It's all she thinks about and she talks to the fridge in her mind all day.
In the film it's more antagonistic/scary but in the book it stops talking after she starts the pills.

When I first saw this film when it originally came out, I really enjoyed it. I was much younger, obviously. But I've caught it again recently, and I found it to be so over-the-top that it's comical. 🤣
Yet another excellent analysis. I never considered solitude being a thematic element to this movie but your analysis makes it seem obvious lol I bet you'd make a great film teacher.
To fellow subscribers: please consider voting for Pi as his next analysis if he puts it in a poll again. If you haven't seen it I promise it's something you'd want to hear his thoughts on. The whole film is like a surreal trip and it's just a really deep movie overall.
Indeed, voted for this one last week. In the same vein, and if you like this type of movies, consider Eraserhead by David Lynch
Pi will certainly be in the next poll since it was pretty much tied with The Lighthouse. The Tuesday after my Lighthouse video, I'll put that poll out. And I'm so glad you enjoyed the analysis, thank you so much! And that's funny, a friend of mine also recently said I should be a film professor later in life, but I don't know anything about making a movie haha maybe I could just teach the courses on thematic storytelling. I'll keep it in mind! Thank you so much for voting and watching!!
@N N I have to watch this! I've heard too many good things!!
@@lucasblue20 It's a weird one, but "in heaven everything is fine"😀 I'm never sure I like Lynch work or not, but he is so fascinating, his brain is in the five dimensional space, almost impossible to catch.
Haha ok sounds good. I’m hyped, I’ll let you know when I see it!!
I cried for about 30 minutes after watching this movie for the first time. Word to the wise: do not watch this while high and drunk 😅

Thank you so much! So glad you liked it!!
I saw this movie in school when i was 15, it left a huge impression on me. To this day I can't touch drugs even though they have been offered to me numerous times.
Damn, I watch this movie every few years, it’s something that I instinctually recognized as beautiful, terrible, and deeply reflective the ways we all cope, on some level, with trauma, but you articulated all of the nuances much better than I ever could have. Thank you for this video Lucus
Amazing analysis!
Thank you so much!!
This movie is one of the most depressive movies that I’ve seen in a long time. Amazing acting, but wow is it heavy.
My English teacher recommend this to me after I told him I watched fight club. He said if I liked that I would like requiem. I feel deceived.
