  • In this travel video tour of Portland, Oregon, I travel to Portland, one of the most unique cities in the United States.
    I started my trip off by hopping off a plane and then immediately hopping onto a bus. But not just any bus, a bus operated by Brewvana Brewery Tours, the mostly women-run craft beer brewery tour company. Portland, or know as Beervana to some, is home to 55 breweries within its borders, and is truly a beer-lover's paradise. On my tour we made stops at Rogue Ales & Spirits, Laurelwood Pubic House & Brewery, Widmer Brothers Brewery and Sidecar Bar, where I had the chance to sit down over a pint with the founder and owner of Brewvana, Ashley Rose Salvitti.
    While in Portland, I stayed at the Tiny House Hotel, a hotel made up of, you guessed it, tiny houses. In the next portion of my video guide I give a tour of my "crib" to show what it's like to live and stay in a tiny house.
    Then, in an effort to get a chance to experience the famed brunch scene in Portland, I stopped in at The Tin Shed Garden Cafe, located down the street from where I was staying in the New Alberta Arts District.
    In the interest of learning more about food, I headed to the downtown location of the Portland Farmers Market, located in a beautiful stretch of downtown Portland. Here, I got a tour of the grounds with Mona Johnson, then had the opportunity to meet up with some of the vendors, including Matt Choi of Choi's Kimchi Company, and famed chef and artisanal pickle impresario, David Barber of Picklopolis and Bingo! Sandwiches.
    In need of a little peace and serenity, I then visited the Lan Su Chinese Garden, a peaceful and beautiful oasis in an otherwise busy and hectic part of downtown.
    When visiting Portland, there's no reason to spend all your time in the city, especially with so much to do outside the city limits. The next day I took a road trip with local Matthew Domingo to explore the Columbia River Gorge and the numerous trails and waterfalls just off the road you can check out.
    Then, to wrap things up, we stopped in at Hood River Organic near the riverside town of Hood River, an organic orchard and farm run by East Coast ex-pat Dan Thall, who gave us a tour of his land. Once the day ended we then headed out to happy hour at Solera Brewery in the imposing shadow of Mount Hood and then into town for a dinner featuring mushroom pizza with mushrooms Dan had grown and recently delivered to the restaurant.

    As and Oregonian I think what perfected this video is that fact that the ground is wet but it isn't raining

    I went to Portland Two weeks ago. It was amazing! We did the Multnomah Falls trail and Canon Beach Haystack Rock aka Goonie Rock outside of Portland. In the city we went to VooDoo Doughnuts, Blue Star Doughnuts, The Saturday Market, Portlandia Statue, Coava, Barista Cafe, Bartini, Mcmenamins Kennedy School, The Food Trucks and much much more. It was a lot of fun! Thanks for your tips!

      TheExpeditioner Some suggestions on where to go next time: Powell's (world's largest independent bookstore), Washington Park for the beautiful city and Mt. Hood views and the International Rose Garden, Forest Park (one of the world's largest urban parks, co-designed by your own Central Park creator Olmstead), the mysterious Portland tunnel system under Old Town/Chinatown (supposedly haunted), you could try to track down Carrie Brownstein for an interview since she also writes about Portland, check out uber-trendy but tasteful 23rd and 21st avenues for some charming Portland shopping/eating. You could even buzz by Reed College---the only college Steve Jobs attended (for one semester and one calligraphy class after that, which he said influenced his inclusion of typefaces in the first Macintosh.).

I highly suggest visiting mt hood or the Oregon coast, both are maybe 4 hours from portland but if you are there for all of spring break then its a must see. also visit the zoo just outside of Portland. gotta be one of my favorite places in the city. like I said there is so much to do in Oregon its impossible to do it all so pick wisely ;D

    wow this is so awesome! im planning on going on day trip to portland from seattle. I don't know if I'll have time to recover from a brewery tour so which two breweries would you recommend on visiting? I think i'll be visiting Rogue Ales for sure.

      Cool, I can't believe you haven't gone already -- so close! Regarding breweries, I only went to the ones shown, but there are literally dozens to choose for. In all seriousness, the best option would be to hitch a ride with Brewvana because they'll drive you around, food is included, they have special access and you get lots of information from the guides.

    Hey everyone! Here in the PDX area, we've been developing some really cool mobile
    technology supporting the wine, beer and spirits industry. I believe we,
    our users, our partners and our developers will challenge the
    status-quo and change the reason wine, beer and spirits enthusiasts
    visit tasting rooms (wineries, breweries, distilleries). Coming June
    2016! Hope to see you soon. Cheers!

    wanna move here to continue college. What are rent prices like currently i live in a 2 bedroom for around $1500 a month would i be able to find something similar in portland or the suburbs around it?

    • @trillyallison2098
      @trillyallison2098 9 років тому

      Possibly! Downtown portland is super expensive.. I'd say you could find a small airy meant with one bedroom for 1300.

    • @quitecontrary3790
      @quitecontrary3790 9 років тому

      shasanain If you're in the heart of downtown a tiny apartment will cost you an arm and a leg. But if you're a few miles out from the metro area you can easily find a nice 2 bedroom apartment for about 1000/month. My friend pays 1000 for her 2 bedroom, her complex also has a pool, hottub, yoga room and is right across the street from a bunch of foodcarts, as well as the max line which can take you right downtown to PSU or wherever you're going.

    I am thinking about moving to Portland. I cannot drive and cannot bike, do you think I can survive on using only the public transportation. Is the public transportation system good there?

    • @TheExpeditioner
      @TheExpeditioner  9 років тому +1

      Well, I'll let any locals address this, but I didn't have a car there and I was fine. I mainly used the bus system, but if I had a bike the whole time, I would have been fine. I think you need a car for day trips to go hiking, exploring, etc... But there's always ZipCar for that.
