Sadly we do in Denmark. We had license before, but now they get the money directly from the government.
They have now changed the wording on the forms to make you pay for a load of other channels. Now you cannot even watch plus one channel either which is an hour later. They have completely change the goalpost, in fact there doesn't even appear to be one. Heard a rumour they are going to put it on our council tax billl which is not fair as lots do not pay council tax. Now they are showing loads of old programmes.
It's rip off Britain. I bet they will push for a tax for everyone regardless.

I haven't had a tv for well over 20yrs but I did get to cancel two tv licences in one phone call as my sister had died & my mother had to go into care with dementia, all in the space of a couple of weeks. I was tempted not to bother, just let both licences run out of date, but those two licences cancelled goes onto the annual figures. There must be a large percentage of cancelled licences down to death or moving into a home, as well as viewers thinking "I've had enough of this crap!"

Yes I cancelled my tv licence just before lockdown. Best decision I ever made because we didn’t hear any government doom laden panic press conferences.

I stopped paying my BBC license fee last year around October , best thing I did as I don't watch bbc channel's they have gone completely woke and bias on all levels its disturbing

Totally optional, I chose to not have a tv set, that was 23yrs ago. I have no interest in watching tv, I despise the BBC & loath adverts so no channel would suit my needs anyway. There's far more variety on UA-cam, Odysee, Bitchute et al. The MSM only pushes one political viewpoint and the "news" services are little more than propaganda arms, under these conditions, the main tv channels are not fit for any purpose outside of promoting propaganda rather than reporting the truth. Don't scrap the licence, smash the BBC into a million pieces.

My parents always panic about the TV licence yet they never watch the BBC I finally got them to cancel it. They only watch the old shows that are on Netflix
Well done, I haven't managed to convince one person to do without, though I did get to cancel two licences in one phone call, when my mother went into a home with dementia and my sister died a few days later. I haven't had a tv set for 23yrs and I only know of one other person who'd rather persue a hobby than sit staring at a tv screen all evening.
Ive manage to convince my girlfriend to get rid of her licence. She was under the impression she needed one just for having a tv. I explained to her and then showed her some of your videos and she now understands she doesn't need a licence. Cheers jon

I cancelled mine, because of the woke and B L M, that was being forced on me via the BBC, the way they were against Brexit or anything British left me with no choice but to cancel, best thing i ever did

We finally took the decision in February to stop the licence. We are mid 70's and have paid it all our long TV lives. The BBC has gone down the drain. and should not receive money for rubbish and to pay huge salaries to people we do not watch(cough cough Gary Lineker) or for the newer woke stuff. My husband enjoyed the BBC News🤣 which delayed our decision, and I enjoyed a few programmes on other channels, never the BBC though! We have not missed watching live TV at all, well maybe just the Jubilee celebrations, but not a huge issue at all.
Hi Ruth. Exactly the same here ( well almost I'm 67 and husband is 74). We watch very little TV anyway so stopping paying was an easy decision. We just let licence run out and didn't renew it.

It's going to stop in 5 years, i think it is. Nobody will have to pay them. My ex was taken to court twice because he actually let them in his house stupidly, but the fine was only £100 and paid back at £4 a month. So still cheaper than the licence and it's not a criminal record and you don't attend. I was paying £26 a month for not watching it, and he was just paying £4 and still continued watching without paying. I don't agree with his actions but it was cheaper.

We cancelled our TV license 15 years ago. It is NOT “mandatory” to buy a TV licence! It is a choice to receive broadcast TV.
Mandatory - look in Blacks Law dictionary, it's an offer. We don't have to accept.
We can watch if we want, legally we don't have to pay anyway: no contract.

None of my three kids watch TV... at all. They play video games, watch UA-cam, look at social media and go out for a drink now and then. That's it. TV isn't part of their life in any sense, they've moved on to different types of entertainment. AND... they've told me they've even started to abandon Netflix and the others as the quality just isn't worth it. Times are changing and TV doesn't have a future, I honestly believe that!
Netflix is crap.I watched(not on Netflix😉)the first episode of the Resident Evil series.I managed 14 mins into ep2 before stopping.Characters were unlikeable and it was woke.

Has anyone ever questioned the use of the words Freeview and Freesat? If you're required to pay the BBC Tax to watch any 'live' TV irrespective of the channel it's broadcast on then they are not Free.
It's bad reporting to call it mandatory the fee but point being made is that those paying the fee watch mostly the other channels and use very little if any BBC content. these are the very people that need reaching out to and informing that catch-up TV would save them £159 a year.
It's ok saying that, but I'm not the only one to say catch-up services are crap. Ad's every few minutes, I would rather just watch Prime without the adds

This is excellent news for those who went legit, and declared NLN. 270-300000 new "cases" to deal with, they will not have the time to "threaten" most of them! They know the majority of cases on their books will never come back, and they are mostly wasting their time "visiting" as they will get nothing out of it. Great work Mr Chilli :)
They'll find the time and the recourses to threaten people, if people stick to their guns and ignore them for long enough the financial costs of all the letters alone will cripple them.

@@Lee_303 not harassment as these are classed as legitimate correspondence, i aske a police officer mate of mine, if you contact them telling them to stop they'll ask you why and if you tell them you don't need one because you don't use live broadcasts then they won't contact you for two years. If they carry on sending letters within that two years then that would be harassment, that's why they don't send letters within that two years unless they have proof that your watching live tv.
Just been watched a bit of athletics on bbc totally all black presenters ,compare to a few nights ago when the f/male England football team was critically condemned for being al white after a great win ,the bbc is unbelievable I’m sick of the hypocrisy
I felt the same way whilst watching the program about the James Webb Telescope. The first three people interviewed were black. Those three are obviously intelligent but don't seem to have the common sense to realise they are being used to push some distorted agenda by the bbc. I honestly believe the bbc can't help themselves.

The day I learned that the Prime Minister appoints the Director General of the BBC, was the day I stopped buying TV Tax. Fortunately, I learned that while I was a teenager living with my parents and so never paid for one. The threatening lies came thick and fast every month. Different shapes of official looking nonsense threats which were never followed up. A couple of visits by men asking personal questions who were politely told to leave and who did but nothing more.
The BBC haven't got a commercial bone in their body, yet the bosses continue to pay themselves like they were the commercial wizzards of TV and entertainment. In the real commercial world few of them would find gainful employment.

I think it would be worthwhile producing a graph showing the reduction in the number of licences over the past few years. I cancelled mine after I discovered that the BBC was making me depressed nearly 5 years ago. I missed every one of Sturgeon's Covid briefings.

The only BBC programme watched in this house is Match of the Day during the season, therefore we end up paying the licence. My husband loves football, but watching Gary Lineker's smug face as he pockets masses of our money for reading an autocue really grinds my gears!
Yep, Jon says the over 40s are the only ones who ''like'' to pay the tax. I don't and I'm well over 40! But I like to watch live TV (mainly sport), just not necessarily the BBC, and to stay on the right side of the law I'm currently obliged to pay up...

Havent paid for my TV license for 5 years. Best thing I ever did, don't watch live TV anymore, dont really have the time and I am not interested. After being forced to move out of my home and finally finding a safe place, within a couple of weeks I got threatening letters, even when barely having my head above water both financially and mentally. It is so shameful! I wish I did have an extra £150 to fork out that would be lovely.
I will never understand why the commercial channels haven't complained about the wording of the TV licence, after all if people stop paying for the licence they won't be able to watch any programmes on "any" channel that is being broadcast live.

The vast majority will never cancel, for many reasons. Some like to watch live TV (not necessarily the BBC) so do not want to break the law, most are simply apathetic...and a few cranks actually like the BBC!

The TV licence should be the VERY FIRST household bill cancelled. It's not necessary and people survive quite easily without one - it is OPTIONAL. Be one of the many cancelling as the BBC will not change so long as the money flows in.
Thank you for your recent programme stating that three hundred thousand people had cancelled their TV licences. Well done them! I am now closer to 90 than 80 and always paid the licence fee until it came free for the over 75’s.However when this concession was withdrawn, and told I must start paying again from the 1st June 2020, I thought that was a liberty and will not get a new licence. I'm surprised that the other terrestrial channels which rely on advertising are not pushing for the abolishing of TV licence more. They are effectively losing advertising audience because of those not paying the licence, because of not wanting to fund the BBC, are having to forgo watching their channels not only the BBC, and they get no benefit from the licence fee.
I told Racing TV (on the phone when I cancelled) that I'd love to keep Racing TV but I can't because I'd have to have a TV Licence. I think I told BT Sport the same.
They are and have been for a while but as the licence is an hypothecated tax , a tax for a specific purpose , in this case watch live TV , they can’t do much , Hopefully in 2027 when the charter ends then some sense may prevail but not holding my breath ,

@@Gambit771 a licence not needed for streaming services which includes Apple and Prime streamed content , If you watch live content from any service including the sport on Prime you need a licence ,It’s not we’re you get it from but what you actually watch , I have both Apple and Prime and legally view both without a licence ,

I was stunned when I went through my tenancy agreement and saw that it stated I had to pay for a tv licence even if I don't watch tv! Anybody else who rents noticed this!?
I've never heard of that. I don't think it will be an enforceable clause. I know someone who deals in the legality of rental agreements, I'll ask and find out for you.

No issue paying for the BBC of the past. A time when they were informative and impartial. Not now. The present? What an obscene organisation.
I have not watched live (BBC etc.) for six or seven years, and I stopped paying for my licence four years ago. I got visited two years ago and told them that their programmes were rubbish and I don't watch them; I know I was wrong as I should have just shut the door again. I've recently got letters from them saying I need to buy one; bullshit! I paid for a licence for over thirty years when I had kids, but they are grown up now. I just can't think of a programme that is worth the money for it. I use Prime, UA-cam and Netflix; even that drains my life away when I could be doing something better.
They send red letters out assuming that you need a licence and this is a form of intimidation because the damn postman thinks you owe them, it's out of order. I refuse to pay them swines a single penny. They are liars and shady,

Haven't needed a license for 20 years, have been considering furthering protest against it and the yearly pestering by starting to write/call other licensing agencies to let them know that I still don't need a license.... "Hello river and fisheries, still don't need a fishing license"

If this goes on the CT, pay you CT for the year, and deduct what ever the BBC want for thier license fee. Cos the council DO NOT GIVE US THAT SERVICE. THE COUNCIL DO NOT SEND A SIGNAL THROUGH AN ARIEL
How can they expect the council to collect money for a service that has nothing to do with them?
BBC is a globally recognised brand. Two simple steps would secure their future:
1. Switch to a global subscription model (so the revenue stream is far greater than just UK households). They would have 100s of millions of subscribers like Netflix.
2. Put their entire back catalogue onto the iPlayer. No whipping programs off after a month or so to try and force license fee payers to pay for it a second time on DVD or Britbox or through advertising on UKTVGold/Dave/Eden etc. Plus if they made all their classic shows from history available (maybe not Jim’ll Fix It) then they’d have a huge offering!

The TV license made perfect sense back in the day when the BBC was pretty much the only thing available. But times have moved on. They could easily switch to a subscription based service and not only would that remove and decriminalise the TV license, it would likely give the BBC a much bigger budget too.

It reminds me of a D:Ream song, "things can only get better". The BBC's constant doom and gloom forecasts now apply to them.
When subscriptions drop enough, they will just end up forcing the government to subsidise them as a 'national service' via taxation. Too much money involved for them to give it up and they know it wouldn't survive as a subscription model since they gave up investing in quality programs instead focusing on wokeness and overpaid presenters.

Thanks for keeping us informed on a regular basis about the BBC. I was paying for a license even though I was not watching live stream TV or hadn't been for about 2 years (maybe they should give us all refunds eh?). I cancelled mine nearly 2 years ago and am waiting for the follow up letter. I have had e-mails asking why I had not logged on to BBC i player and that they were going to cancel my account (no need, I have now done it myself).

I'm almost 50 and I cancelled my TV Licence with pride. Streaming on Netflix and all the other sites all the way, baby!
They won’t go to a subscription based model when they can just be funded under a council tax “special levy”. That way, even if you don’t have a TV, you won’t be able to avoid it.
I don't think they are in trouble at all sad to say as I think they'll just add a tax to everyones household.
Yeah but I heard eventually the package deal will offer even more value for money when they include free straps for the chair, two free matchsticks, one per eye, and a couple of goons to strap you in nice and tight as they even turn the tele on for you. Just one channel though with one endless repeat which hey, saves your money they're spending!

I’d like to see them do what other company’s do , put the price up because nobody wants what they sell …. Then slowly go out of business …. Don’t watch don’t pay ….

Fantastic news. The BBC will have to make even more cuts on top of the cuts they've already made. Don't be surprised to read about building closures and mass redundancies. The way things are going the BBC will be forced to operate out of a garden shed. It'll just be Gary Lineker with a deep tan to make himself look black and the director of the BBC operating his smartphones videocamera live on UA-cam. 😆

The thing is it shouldn't be for live tv. The licence should be for the BBC only.
I'm 55 and I'm done with broadcast tv, UA-cam and commercial channel catch up services. BBC rarely have a programme I would want to watch. They should limit themselves to a news channel and the rest should go commercial and/or streaming.
Jon, for the last few years (3 or 4 years actually), i've been raiding my local charity shops for DVD's. I've built up quite a collection. I have over 700 titles, most of them boxed sets. I have everything from old stuff like "Are You Being Served" to more modern stuff like Wire in the Blood.......I watch what i want......when i want to watch it.
You can't beat physical media. I'm watching The Dukes of Hazzard at the moment.

I received another letter this morning telling me that because I haven't responded to the previous letters, they are now moving to the (drum roll please) final phase of the investigation. They will be sending an investigator to check if I am watching television. They will have a job because I live in a top floor flat. 😂

A couple of weeks ago the job centre tried to talk my son into applying for a job as a tv licence enforcement agent going door to door. He refused, he said I'd be a bit of a hypocrite with that job as I don't have a tv licence myself! 😂
