  • I have been using the Clawhammer 10 gal starter brewing kit for a long time now. Now that I am used to its ins and outs I thought I would record an overview with my thoughts. The pros and cons and how it relates Vs something like a Grain father.

    I bought that same pot. I love it. I bought it mainly for the strainer basket and size. I made my 1st corn mash in 2 five gal. pots on the stovetop in my house using brew bags. What a nightmare. Never in the house again. This pot makes it much easier. Looked into many other options but I couldn't find a suitable stainless mesh strainer. I'm glad to hear the basket holds up.

    I love mine, only used once so far, but it's so much better than my old pot and a bag. Heat with my induction plate (same as Ol' George recommends) and it's all awesome 👍👍 CHEERS !!

    Anvil Foundry has a system that is a little bigger - 10.5 gal and a pump upgrade. I am considering this one.

    The robobrew/brewzilla systems works great as a all grain BIAB system on a budget, and you can get a distillation lid to attach a 2" tower easily. This then becomes your brewing equipment for all grain beer or mash recipes, as well as your boiler for an electric controlled still. The clawhammer supply stuff is great, but for my the decision was made when it works as both devices for half the price of one.

    I am looking very close at this system. Bout ready to go to a controller and it seems those guys have done their homework. I live on the bank of the Conecuh River and like the idea of set and forget so I can brew and fish at the same time.

    Thanks for the info Jesse - I'm really interested in making the job of grain separation easier and think the BIABasket is a great idea. I'm down in kiwiland too so I guess the freight for one of those would cost as much as the unit itself. Do you know how the big guys do it? Is there a method that could be adapted to smaller setups?     Hey this is kinda off topic but I thought I should share the info.. in making my rum wash i failed to check the ph before I pitched the yeast. Well after a month, i checked on it and learned nothing had fermented. So thats when I learned my ph was like 4.3. So i thought that using baking soda would help correct that, and it did but not till after I had a frickin volcano eruption (think 6th grade science class). Ya made one hell of a mess. So, if you have this issue, baking soda works to correct ph, but introduce it slowly.

      I checked out a lot of options. Making my own strainer basket, trying to find one already made. After blowing out a couple bags and wasting time and $ I bought one. Pricey, but I it makes it so much easier .

    Hi ! I v read post about use of salt or baking soda to add in the still that will act on the vaporisation temp or on the fusel... have you hear anything about that? All the best ! Nicolas

    Oddly enough I just bought a 10 gallon mash tun yesterday. Instead of the basket though it has a false bottom and a metal mesh tube that attaches to the spigot

    Hi Jessie, thanks for the video. Is this pot Induction ready? If not can a person buy or build a plate to put on a Electric Hot plate set up for Induction pots only? Does the pot come ready to just hook up the heating element if you wanted to use it for distilling using a PID? Does it come with the condenser?

    Jesse ..I know I'm supposed to be looking at the gineo cuz it's the shiny fancy expensive still..BUT then I noticed the new 4 inch sections on Ugly Betty .. kinda upset that you haven't talked about that and if you notice differences in runoff speed or flavors... She reminds me of my first VW bug ..New and Shiny isnt always better

    What micron mesh is in this? I’m sure a lot of people like me want to know if you can mash in a corn meal milled to flour for a bourbon and drain for an off grain ferment.
    It’s a huge problem for most.

    i cheaped out and got a 15l pot from kmart for $20AUD and brew in a bag and that works.. but its not as nice or easy as something like this and if you have the money its the best way to go as they say buy cheap buy twice

    I have a 10 gallon brew kettle with a false bottom. But I would be nice to go all electric.

    I brewed in a bad once ,bought the parts for my lauter tun the next day but i still put dark granes in a bag cos the wee shards block the mash floor

    I figured out using a fruit press makes separation of the liquid from the grain way easier than mash tuns for me

      Do you manage to get clear beers? I find that if I either mix too much or press or anything during the mash like that I extract too much starch and it hazes the beers.

      @From My Ashes RisenRebornRedeemed if you're referring to pulling tannins out, that's done by heat not with the fruit press.

      Also, I may note: I ferment strictly on the grain. After looking at a lot of big distilleries that ferment on the grain, I noticed their grain was always extremely lacking of any liquid left. We all know that draining will never produce grain with that low liquid volume. That's what lead me to getting the fruit press

      Not sure about in NZ but in AUS you can get them from cheeky peak brewery.
      They do nano brewing systems.
      Just bought 1 but haven’t unpacked it yet

    Hay brother I've been making rum for 4 months now following your channel i live in a city in canada and have to use distilled water or sprung water just a pot still wondering if after you distill do you cool your rum mash- wash and use it again if not why and might make a good part 1-4 video if you try you already have the dunder in it and can add more in it if you start with the gravity and do the math add sugars and molasses away you go brother waste not friend

    priced out all the parts to build the system myself I do enjoy making my own equipment and tools but the cost difference really wasn't worth it. It wasn't that much difference in price got the clawhammer system already built for under $100 more than the parts would have cost

    Too much money for what it is. Used keg (+/-$50) false bottom $40. Flip keg upside down and cut the opening in the bottom to fit a lid that you have already of go to a restaurant supply for one. Use your still for strike water and fly sparge right into fermentor for single malt and if you really want to sterilize fly sparge into your still. Bourbon is a different animal all together and jimbos bourbon recipe/technique can be done in the same vessel just remove the false bottom.
