Audio-Technica LP60XBT: Vinyl Is Poetry

  • Let's face it, living in the digital era is cool and comfortable and has spoiled us all rotten. We can easily store and stream thousands of movies, pictures, songs and albums. We can carry all of the content we (think we) need in a pocket. In particular, with any music subscription, there's an overwhelming universe of artists and productions we can totally overdose on. As you know, I love technology and always embrace every innovation and step toward the future, in the most disparate fields. The problem is that, no matter how many movies and tv shows are in my digital library, or songs in my giant playlist, I often feel like this kind of progress has left us with the illusion of owning something, while we're really not holding anything in our hands. There is absolutely no poetry in a digital file, sorry to say.
If some playful aliens from Planet Jerkface decide, one morning, to wipe all our content from the cloud, to deactivate our devices for good just for the galactic fun of it we are all majestically screwed.
Today I finally decided to go analog and pulled the trigger on a modern turntable, the Audio-Technica LP60XBT, and I'm not regretting it one bit. I've been seeing vinyl records having an incredible comeback in stores and in the heart of many people, and I'm now ready to explain why.
First, you can stream as much music as you want from Apple Music, Spotify, etc., but mp3 files will never sound as good, pure and "real" as the warm notes coming from a turntable.
Also, when you buy physical records, you are subconsciously brought to be way more selective, trying to build a special collection of albums that truly mean something to you. I have the idea of putting together some defining classics and historical albums, beginning with The Cure and Joy Division, also including David Bowie, Queen, Metallica, Pantera, U2...heck, even Run DMC and the mighty Blues Brothers. Lots of selected oldies from the 50s and 60s will be in the mix, for sure. I'm talking about real musicians and innovators, from a time when artists were a group of talented individuals, truly capable of playing instruments and singing, crafting meaningful albums with deep motivations.
I also confess my love for the ceremony of removing the vinyl from its sleeve, placing it on the turntable and listening to the album while being mesmerized by the spinning disc. To make this ritual complete, I often read the booklet included in the package and get carried away by the music. It is a magical experience that makes me feel connected, every single time.
In addition to all of these elements, I'm incredibly excited to find a hidden gem in some random little store, or to resuscitate my parents' collection of Italian records, each one from a different time period , sometimes with a handwritten dedication on the cover.
I surely don't have to convince you, especially if progress has deprived you of having the attention span to read so much text, but Vinyl wins over Digital, hands down.
    Vinyl is poetry.
As I always repeat, OLD SCHOOL IS THE REAL SCHOOL.

This looks very similar to my Denon DP29-F. I believe even the replacement needle is an Audio Technica needle. Cool!

I always wondered what that swirl label design would look like on an LP if Capitol used it that way.

Awesome song Brian Wilson harmonies at their best. It came out in a 45 in 1964 as the B side of I Get Around. I'm not a big 45 collector but would like to get one.
