It's kind of relieving to know that even pro artists can get buried under a ton of layers, make to much random brushstrokes and get confused in their own process. Gives me hope that not every art creation process has to be perfectly measured and planned, that it can make a crazy turn to utter chaos

    • @nycsim-r8t

Take a look at League of Legends splash art. Some of these artists have over a thousand layers and many have hundreds of layers. This is after merging layers. If you're using digital tools why even create limitations of a few layers? Doesn't make any sense especially for production artists who may have to make many changes when their art director looks at work in progress.

I love how marc explained these perspectives. Most others I've seen explain perspective have always over complicated it

  • @nycsim-r8t
    @nycsim-r8t 4 дні тому +22

Marc made it look so easy. Perspective is an art fundamental.
One of the best ways to get started with perspective is to do the Drawabox 250 box challenge (and do it again). These boxes are in 3 point perspective and will help you build an intuition. If you can do 3 point perspective, you can do 1 and 2 point with no problems. Use screenshots of urban landscapes and figure out the eye level (horizon) and whether it is 1, 2, or 3 point perspective. Trace it. You will build intuition. Then create your own urban landscape, but make sure you use reference. Also, make sure you always observe. That's the most important thing.
So, how long will it take? Drawabox can take a while. If you did 25 boxes/day, it will take 10 days. Tracing landscapes and getting comfortable can take 10-30 hours. Another 10-20 hours for your imagined landscapes.

I think part of the problem is that not many people see beauty in creating environments or just find them too intimidating. Most of the art submitted on social media seems to be character art. Just remember you're allowed to focus on just the things you like and it does get less and less intimidating over time, you don't start by making huge giant landscapes of ten billion details, you start with a little world of plain boxes and can make it as detailed or undetailed as you'd like (it's ok I'm scared of it too, I only started getting good at backgrounds when I decided to make a visual novel)

The MOST COMPLEX DRAWING I'VE EVER DONE!? 🤯 (full process explained)
Tekon Concrete.

Great video! I love seeing this kind of subject matter, especially because I'm trying to learn this sort of environment art. But the construction doesn't really give me too many issues, it really is the details that give me such a hard time, not so much drawing them but coming up with them. I sit there forever at my sketch trying to figure out what details to add, and end up just drawing signs and vents and pipes everywhere because that's all I can think to add, and I still end up with all kinds of flat surfaces that I can't figure out how to break up or cover. I would love to see you tackle this sort of project again and explain more of the detail process.

Thanks! For details just a little knowledge of architecture, interior design and construction goes a long way. It’s almost more of a logical decision that I make when I place a bigger detail than it is an artistic one.
Most details have a function, same idea as when you place a door or a window on a wall. You know it should go there because it makes sense, not because it looks good.

I found the big advantage to blocking out in a 3D application (I use Blender) is that you can 'twist' objects around so they no longer fit with your 2 point perspective, yet they are still in scale. For example: you build one chair, then you copy it, and not only can you place them around a table, but you can twist them so they're not all aligning with the table.

And also thank you for the quality videos you produce!

Hi marc can you tell more about how manage shading perfectly and what you referenced to draw all the small details

    • @YTartschool
      @YTartschool  2 дні тому +1

It’s far from perfect 😅 but thanks! I have a couple videos on shading you should have a look at the YT Art School playlist.
Didn’t use reference for this one (although I should’ve), I just tried to imagine what a similar store irl would look like and how it would be like in person and it just fills itself up. I’ve played enough cyberpunk 2077 to have plenty of ideas for it hehe

Just when I think it's time to start dabble in the forbidden arts of perspective to make more interesting presentations, Marc releases a video on the subject. Very suspicious...
Now on a side note: I did my first comission, baby! Got asked to do a logo for a punk band , something that could be printed on a t shit and look cool. Marc tutorials on lineart really helped me achieve my vision and they loved the result. So thank you Marc for being an amazing teacher and sharing your knowledge with us ^^

It looks great! I'm so happy to see your process from basic shapes to more details, making it look more organic -also the anti AI Sign ha! i really think it's a great piece, sometimes things don't go as planned but come out great anyway. Also! i don't think 15h is that much when you look at the result. I need more!

  • @ManiacalMobius

@YTartschool 4:27 Where do you get the ideas for the "big shapes" stage? Why tall cubes with bridges? Is it just vibes? Is that from reference? Does what you start with even matter after the detail is applied? Would love to know. Thanks.
I would also really love a video on drawing interiors. Like bedrooms, living rooms, things like that. I guess similar principles could be applied, but I always struggle with designing the room shape, furniture, and how to have it actually feel "lived-in" rather than a grid-based sims house lol

    • @YTartschool

I was playing cyberpunk 2077 and I always loved those buildings stuck under bridges and the cool lighting it gives so that was the inspiration, I just built the base for an open shop that serves as an artschool in front of a tall bridge-like structure :)

  • @zaugitude

Excellent detail at all levels, you definitely nailed it!
Could you give a brief rundown of what sort of layer structure the file has; what you keep separate, etc.?
Also, did you use any reference while working it out?

    • @YTartschool
      @YTartschool  2 дні тому

Thx! Layer structure is just 3 basic groups for background, mg, fg and then a complete mess within those. Usually I keep things tidy!
No real references used other than those signs because I can’t write Japanese. I referenced the electric pole from cyberpunk 2077 too :)

5:15 yeah learning basic blender skills is probably the best thing I have done to level up perspective stuff in my art. Drawing from vanishing points and shape construction, especially with non box shapes, is so unbelievably time consuming and easy to mess up (for me at least). Important skill to learn and understand but I ain’t going back to manual now I’ve learned how to drive an automatic

Took advantage of the New Year's sale so that I can start once I finish the last two certification exams for my work. What intimidates me the most is coming up with the details. How do you come up with the vision for the drawing? Right now, I can't fathom being able to come up with all of the details to put in a piece and scenes like this are what I eventually want to get into.
