  • Please note, this video is mainly about saw strokes and safety rather than correct pruning, which is dealt with elsewhere. The tree here is being dismantled for firewood for reasons irrelevant to this video, it's not being pruned correctly.
I prune my apple trees with a very sharp saw (Silky Fox Gomtaro Apple 300mm) because it is more efficient, but its also dangerous. The very thin blade can snap easily if you get it trapped in the branch you are sawing, or push forward carelessly. Also, you only need to TOUCH the blade to cut yourself. This tutorial looks as risk reduction while pruning.

    Good safety talk. Thank you.
Also, thank you for including that tearing bark during a cut is quite bad.

Good tips, Stephen, and as informative as ever. On a slightly technical point re: your videos, is there any way to muffle the sound of the wind, it does seem to interfere somewhat. Otherwise, thank you as always.

I use a Gomtaro and they are a great tool and your video shows some good points.

The Apple Gomtaro is the specific saw I always use, Silky make a wide range of saws. The Aple is distinguished by the size of the teeth which wary from small to medium as you get nearer the base, this gives a clean cut in one stroke for wood up to about 1.5 cm.
Other Gomtaro Silky saws will be OK but you want medium/fine teeth for apple pruning, if the teeth are coarse it may be better to terurn the saw. Sorry I can't give specific advice, it may sound like it but Im not a Silky salesman!

Thanks for these great videos. I live in Maine, USA and have planted four apples, the oldest being a Honeycrisp five years old. Sad to say that I did not know about the importance of pruning and training apples. I'm About to correct this. A Silky Gamtaro just arrived, but it is not the "Apple " model which was not listed at all on the site that I used. Is the Apple Saw available only in the UK? My saw is the "300 mm Gamtaro 104-30. How different are these two saws?

yes I know the wind noise is a ballsache and I'm sorry, I hate it too. It always seems worse when Julia is filming.....must be the way she holds the camera!....... but I don't know how bad its going to be until I look at the video when I get home later and then its impossible to make the video again. Will try some experiments with foam over the mike or something.
    thanks for the friendly criticism

I'm quite pleased with my Felco 600, but it fails to make wood seem like warm butter as the Gomtaro does. There's one thing they have in common, it bends easier than other saws I've owned. I have bent it out of shape, but it did not break and I was able to straighten it back.
Regarding your unfortunate wound, I remind you that the ancient japanese sword-craftsmen tested the sharpness of their blades on their own skin... so you won't have to! (Joke)

this is not a toy! one slip out in the wild could end up with you bleeding to death! think before every slice is my leg/hands or any other part of my body in the way if the blade was to slip? accident's do happen just make sure your body or any limbs are to the side and out of the way and always ware thick gloves you would be a fool not to. grate video i wonder how many pints of blood this as saved so far? lol
