    Ski Instructors often use the term 'skiing stacked' when talking about body position in ski technique.
    In this advanced ski lesson Darren Turner, presenter of the Ski School series of Apps for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad explains what 'being stacked' means and tells you how it will improve your skiing - not only when carving but off piste, in powder and crud too. Learn to ski the right way.
    The Ski School series of Apps offer ski technique instruction using no-nonsense, easy-to-understand language in a format that you can take wherever you go.

    I think your videos are terrific. I am an intermediate-advanced skier, and much of what you say is so nice for putting into practice. I am surprised at the level of criticism on youtube. You are doing a terrific job. Keep up the good work.

    Thank you glad to hear you like the films, I do often wear a helmet since this was filmed. I strongly believe it is a personal choice but also a lot of people watch the films so all of the new series is filmed with a helmet.

    Darren, you're videos are outstanding! Thank you for posting them. I'm a ski instructor in Minnesota where the hills are very small, and when I go out west to ski I'm suffering non-stop on days 4 and 5. Being "stacked" doesn't seem so important here, but I know it does matter on real ski hills and I've been working on getting better at that as well as teaching my students better technique. Thanks!

    Thanks very much Mike, it's been a lot of hard work but comments like yours really do make it worthwhile especially the fact you are an instructor and work in the industry. You can always download the app as well which will allow you to compare any demonstration you wish against one of your clients. Thanks again and hope you have a great season.

    This is one of my favorite videos. After watching this I corrected my over-rotation issue, and I feel much stronger and better balanced on the snow. Now no matter how the snow texture is, being stacked gets you out of the turn easy and with no trouble. Thank you. Nice jacket by the way.

  • @skng

    Try to use the arc of the carve turn to slow down. Turn fully across and almost up the hill, if the terrain gets steeper you may have to apply a percentage of skid to your turn to help scrub some speed. This doesn't make you a bad skier.

    Good exercise! I like the way the use of both hands are demonstrated. If the outside hand is following the outside ski and the inside hand is placed properly, then over rotation of the torso cannot occur thus twisting or rotaing the skis off their edges. I also like the "flow" aspect you mention, the smooth transition of the hand placement that is. Longer radius turns require smoother flowing movements just as short turns require smooth but quick movements. I will use this drill this winter!

    What a great tip for those that over rotate the upper body into the hill to (falsely) control speed but riding out a carved turn isn't a beginner or even intermediate skill so facing the fall line (with upper body rotation downhill) is more helpful to almost every skier.

    @eSKape1994 Thanks for your comments guys. We do agree that helmets are advisable, and for that reason in all video that we've filmed since January 2011 Darren will be wearing a helmet, (though archive video filmed before this that we upload may feature Darren without one).
    We do however also believe that it should be a matter of personal choice (except for kids!).

    Love all the video's. My eight year old daughter watched the carving video last year before the season and brilliantly started the year off carving! It seems as if I've been skiing forever, and I've dragged bad technique along for the ride. These videos are helping me tweak my skiing and are offering me more confidence. I still only drop into the double blacks on occasion. The fear of moguls (the final frontier) has held me back. The dreaded chutes are filled with moguls. Maybe this year I can try the moguls again. Skiing with my daughter on the blueblacks and the blacks is probably more fun than the brief ego boost a chute will give me. Oh well. Thanks. Where are these videos filmed? Rockies?

    • @skng
      @skng  9 років тому

      Hi Malcolm Scott Thats great to hear. Hopefully she's back on the snow and skiing again this year. We filmed the majority of our Ski School lessons in Serre Chevalier Vallée however this particular film was shot in Tignes, France. If bumps are a problem this film might help: How To Ski Bumps / Moguls - Advanced Ski Lesson #6.4
      We'd love to get out to the Rockies some time. Any recommendations?

      Hoping to hit Mammoth Mountain in California soon. I usually like to have her watch a video (during the summer) of what we'll be working on the upcoming year. The carving video absolutely worked wonders. She can succesfully carve down groomed blacks and has control. Now this year it's getting the pole plants fine tuned a bit. We'll need to slow it down to the greens for that. Very excited about this year. Every day is a lesson. Some storms comin' in from ther Pacific!

      Keystone and Arapaho Basin (aka A Basin). The high elevations make for good snow early and late. Large enough for lots of skiiing choices, cheaper than Vail.

  • @skng
    @skng  12 років тому

    @hph304 It is a very different thing if the hand is dropping and dragging the pole to what you are seeing in this video, the pole is dragging because of the angles being created as a look at some videos of races skiing specially in giant slalom.

    As a ski racer, i see very good, advanced carving here-try not to rotate your shoulders at the very end of your turn. Doing so slightly delays initiation on your next turn and as a result you can end up with less turn shape. Remember, speed control via turn shape. Otherwise, great vid and skiing!!!

    My actual skiing movements recorded by video, compared to what i THINK i'm actually doing, can be so far apart to be a bit embarressing. It's also true that whatever new movement your doing - it's probably only about 1/2 in actuality.
    Of course, if you were falling over a lot, and now, you're not or made some other improvement - then that's a great success! There are some good tips by Elatemedia and description / explanation is pretty good too. Darren (his name?) is a very good communicator.

  • @skng
    @skng  12 років тому

    @hugocampkini There seems to be a lot of confusion about this point. What you are describing would be fine for a short radius turn or a turn using a lot of foot rotation at the beginning. A skier making turns similar to the ones in the film will be in a stronger position letting their torso follow the skis slightly more. It will also allow them to use their ankles and knees more to influence the path of the skis.

    Trucker is describing the more usual accepted drill IMO and i agree with his expanded explanation.
    I agree with Julians comments also. I can see that this can work and that it may give some strength ( some stacking ) during turning, but for most, i fear it will produce upper body rotation. Get some video of your skiing, research what your meant to be doing, get some small group / 1 to 1 instruction if possible. It helps me to check my stances / movements in a long mirror for many many reasons.

  • @skng
    @skng  12 років тому

    @anonimko007 If you are doing short radius turns then it is important to keep your upper body facing down the hill, if you are doing medium to long terms your body can start to follow the skis more however it should never be a case of turning the upper body to make the skis turn. Hope this helps.

  • @AlexandreAubrey

    As a ski coach and previously racer, I always learned and taught that a "stacked" position is bad at high speeds. Counter-rotation (keeps shoulders down the hill) puts most of the weight on the outside ski and gives a solid stance. Just look up "GS skiing" on google images and have a look at the world's top skiers, and how their shoulders are facing the bottom as their skis are pointing across the hill. Here's a World Cup run break-down: /watch?v=56HKSJ5FN8M --->2:10 my point exactly.

    • @jamesdunn9714
      @jamesdunn9714 6 років тому

      Counter is good but you only want as much as is required. Shoulders are not always "down the hill" and may be only slightly down the hill or not at all sometimes. It depends on turn shape and size. During a transition your shoulders may be "square" with skis.

    What I have been taught by probably the best skier at Killington, Vermont, USA is to think of your upper body as a box. Keep it quite and always facing downhill, hands forward. Rotate you ankles and hips to make your turns. Also stay loose. Think of your body as a "Noodle".
