  • Kissin plays Franz Liszt's famous Liebestraum No. 3 (Love Dream) on Liszt's own personal C. Bechstein piano in the salon at the Liszt House in Weimar where he resided during the summer months and gave master classes to students as well as private concerts from 1869 until his death in 1886.
Video originally uploaded to Kissin's instagram.

I'm surprised no one has commented about these being the very sounds Liszt had heard. Perhaps Liszt paused and lingered as Evgeny did and allowed the instrument its own time to speak and breathe in its own peculiar manner. I feel he has succeeded in giving us a sense of what Liszt dreamed up in the privacy of this very room.
    Thank you for this.

Yeah, Evgeny is so humble and down to earth. He has absolutely zero arrogance or ego. Met him backstage after a concert once, he was visibly tired and slightly awkward but was extremely nice to everyone, and made sure everyone who wanted an autograph got one before thanking us all and waving goodbye.
After he finished the first solo recital in the history of the BBC Proms in 1997, he rode off in a tiny red car with his teacher and mother and smilingly waved goodbye to his fans.

This piece has a special place in my heart. I played it as a child and as part of the repertoire I used to get into music school. Though I received a scholarship, I found that I wasn't well suited for a career in music -and the likelihood of becoming a music teacher, as most music students become. I have always believed that most recordings of this were far too fast so it's great to hear this more deliberate pace. I always look to Kissin for inspiration.

If this was Liszt’s original piano, then it is sounding as good as the best of the modern ones? Really good and so ornate! A royal piece!

It certainly hasn't got the sound of a modern piano. It's a bit muffled don't you think?

It sounds very good for a very old piano, but it has sort of a honky tonk sound. The upper registry does not sustain notes very long. The dynamics are much less linear than a modern piano. All old pianos sound like that, I don't know if its because of the age or the construction.

I would disagree. You can tell it’s been on “piano life support” for a couple decades now. They’ve been doing a good job with maintenance tho to keep it alive for this long.

I bet the action was not easy to work with. This shows how he’s a true master. The sustain is shot. The soundboard is beyond its lifespan by a lot.

Depends on the composer. Some are better in playing Liszt, Chopin,... others in Rachmaninoff, Scriabin,... in the end they’re all amazing artists

In general, my favourite top pianists alive are Evgeny Kissin, Grigory Sokolov, Arcadi Volodos, Daniil Trifonov, Martha Argerich, Yuja Wang and András Schiff (for Bach only).
Some of my favourite lesser known pianists include Boris Giltburg, Oxana Shevchenko, Aaron Pilsan, Leon McCawley and Dinara Klinton (her technique is one of the best I’ve ever seen).

What an amazing sound! It's hard to tell if the instrument is as awesome as it sounds in the video, but if it's half as good in person, that's one heck of a piano.
Kissin's interpretation is marvellous, of course. Fascinating to imagine the composer playing on the same piano, in the same room. History come to life!
