  • Home video of Amtrak operations in Albany-Rensselaer, NY in the 1980s. FL9 488 with an HEP power car brings an Empire Service train up from NY and is swapped with F40 #318 to head west. As the train departs it is held to wait for the inbound Lake Shore Limited with a triple header of F40s and lots of Heritage cars. Be sure to check out Part 2, • Amtrak Albany 1980s - ...

I wish I was old enough to have seen those lovely F-units in regular service. Sadly, before my time... thank you for capturing this Amtrak history on film and sharing it for all to enjoy!

Spectre_Dragon FL9s when this was filmed were extremely old. F40s at the time, were newborns.

Idea: if a Locomotive can run, then let it run. Also, I say the EMD E & F models of locomotives should be Brought Back.

That is an HEP Generator Car. They were built by Amtrak to be used by their FL9s since they never originally came equipped with HEP from the factory; they also were on standby for locomotives whose HEP was acting up or not working at all. While some already had it fitted well into the 80s, their entire FL9 fleet was eventually fitted with generators by the early 90s when they went through their last major overhaul under Amtrak ownership, but this preceded that.
