As a Danish male in the early 50s, I have a very specific way of picking what t-shirt to wear next.
I pick the one from the top of the stack 😜

Danes love to feel comfortable, and usually they don't care what anyone might think about them. Maybe because they don't judge other people. If you see them wearing black clothes or ecco shoes/sandals is because they feel comfortable and cozy like so.

Funny, I’m African-American, and from the 1st time I went to Denmark/Copenhagen, people assumed I was Danish. I’m not blond 😉, and my hair was cut into a short, sassy style, but I do wear black and grey, and tennis shoes. I would bring my waterproof tennis shoes as well, which are ECCO. I’ve been wearing this brand for around 20 years because they are sized a bit more narrow. I didn’t know they were Danish, until I went to Denmark. But, not the sandals you mentioned. Hehe! In America, I’m a little tall, but Denmark, I’m average. 3 years ago, I took my 18 yr old, twin nephews to Copenhagen. They live in France. They found the girls their age to be very masculine (they said too masculine). I was surprised by their reaction. In Copenhagen, I think women use a bit of makeup, but it’s to look perfectly natural. That’s also my style. But, over the last 10 years, I’ve noticed the older the woman, the more stylish. I like the long Viking, male hair! It’s common throughout Scandinavia, but so is very stylish short haircuts. Anyway, this Californian seems to fit right in. I can’t wait to go back!

Well, masculine Danish women may be the last remainder of the Vikings.
When the British dig up old Vikings they can often not tell if it was male or female untill they measure the hip or do a dna test.

Caroline Kofahl it’s clothing I think. 18 year old French guys weren’t accustomed to so many girls, or anyone wearing baggy sweatpants. They couldn’t even recognize the young ladies as being attractive or not. A friend tried to set them up with a few girls their age, but my nephews thought the were not interested in men, based on how they were dressed. Too French!🤦🏽‍♀️

Fjällräven has been popular since the early 80'es and back then it was common to see high school students carry their books and papers in such a back pack which was a better way to carry your things than a regular school back :-)

    Hi Kelly!
Thanks for another great vlog. Regarding the Fjällräven backpack, it's from Sweden. They have a long line of outdoors stuff - clothing etc. Their backpacks were ALL the rage back in the 80s, and are now enjoying a resurrection. Back in the day they were used as school bags. They are of a very good quality - the one I had finally passed away at age 13 yrs in 1995. It had been all over most of Western Europe on my motorcycle, enduring all sorts of weather. They're rugged despite being kinda simplistic in design. They come in 3 sizes, various designs and many colours.
Just a suggestion...maybe your boys would enjoy carrying their stuff in a Fjällräven backpack...most of the time they're carried over one shoulder..

The Fjällräven backpack is just very practical for carrying around your stuff. Or a day's worth of groceries. And it fits perfectly on the carrying rack of a normal bicycle (unlike shopping bags, which don't fit on the rack). And of course it is very durable, so you don't have to buy a new one all the time.

Thank you for an interesting video! It is always exciting to get another perspective on ones own culture :-D I have tried to give my take on some of the questions as good as I can :-)
The Fjällräven bag (pronounced "fjæll-ræven") is a Swedish outdoors-brand that has been around my entire childhood and probably longer than that. I'm not sure why but the bags are indeed very popular these days, especially among teenage girls in high school. It could be because they are so iconic and retro, and they are known to be sturdy.
The same goes for ecco shoes. I always got ecco shoes as a kid but I agree that there are not many elegant options as an adult woman. Instead I can recommend the brand "Rieker", which have good soles like ecco but are much more elegant :-)
Unfortunately I can't help you with the shopping-complication, since I also don't follow the latest fashion. So I usually wait for the styles and colours I want to become fashionable again, before buying clothing. Although I have been to Skott in Aalborg a few times, where I often see people in the age group you describe. Maybe they have something in your taste :-)

About 80% of danish males age 10-60 wears this in their spare time when indoors: bluejeans and either a t-shirt or polo.
In the coldest 6-8 of the year a sweatshirt is added when neccesary to keep warm
In the warmest 4 months, of the year the bluejeans might be switched with shorts during hottest weather periods (lasting each days or weeks. On average about 1/3 of the total time on and off during the 4 months).

I am Danish and as you said in one of your other videos, many danish young people in their late teens to the start of their 20's are wearing black clothes and so did I. But it was not because of a trend or because it was a typical danish thing to do, it is simply because it makes you look slimmer and as a teenager, you are very body-conscious and don't want to be looked at as fat, so we hide our cute little love handles behind some black clothes :) And as we grow older and are starting not to care what other people think, then out goes the black clothes and welcome colors into our life

Young women like to wear Birkenstock sandals a lot. Generally I would describe the outfits sporty relaxed oversize as a general rule in Denmark, but I totally agree that women wear a lot of dresses in summer (often with pants, leggings or bike shorts underneath), and dresses specifically with small flower prints are very common (I call it a safe choice for any occasion).
A lot of people follow international fashion trends as well, and I disagree about jewelry - almost every young woman would wear a pendant, and perhaps several small earrings, while chokers are also very popular nowadays...

I look at shoes like this: Every other year, i spend two minutes looking at the shoes on about twenty people, pondering their possible reasons for wearing them. This means that I look at each pair of shoes for six seconds max, per year. Obviously, they are not important to me. I do many other things for more than six seconds...
How many seconds does the average person spend looking at any object? 10 seconds? How about a Renoir? Twenty? I don't really think it matters much how things look. But smiles like yours make a difference, and I can watch your videos for entire minutes. Obviously your videos are more interesting than shoes...

Hi Kelly, these backpacks are very popular in other countries too, if you search youtube you will see tons of tutorials of American teenagers teaching you how to tell the difference between a fake and a real kånken! They are Swedish and are made of very durable, waterproof material (hence the high price). They still keep their original design and they are said to be so durable that they are passed down from generation to generation! A lot of thought has gone into making them, for example the logo on an original kånken is reflective to give you extra visibility when you are riding your bike at night. The brand name means "Arctic Fox" in Swedish and the firm is committed to helping arctic foxes survive. I don't think they are just a Danish thing, probably more of a general Nordic thing, but I have to admit that I bought myself a cute black/red kånken mini when I knew I was moving to Denmark about a year ago, and it is still the bag I use as my regular handbag (and I'm 41!) It was actually a wise choice, considering the amount of rain here! The kånken craze is expanding though and they are becoming fashionable all over the world. I was in Thailand a few years ago and all the street markets were packed with fake kånkens in all colours and sizes, so that's why there are so many tutorials about how to tell if your kånken is genuine.

A couple of things about Fjällräven. They produce high quality outdoors clothes and, of course, these iconic backpacks. They are particularly well known for a sort of hard wearing waxed canvas fabric (used for clothes as well as backpacks) that is incredibly durable if you keep “rewaxing” it.
They are currently retro, but when I was a kid, it was basically a stereotype that every Danish primary school teacher had to have a Fjällräven backpack as part of their “uniform”. The reason is probably their incredible durability and that their square form is quite useful for carrying books.

I had ecco sandals as a kid in the 90’s and early 00’s and a lot of the other kids did too. Now they’re much less common, because now we have good sportssandals that are actually cute.
And the backpacks are great because they last forever. The fabric looks better after years of heavy use. I have one I’ve had for more than ten years.

    Dear Kelly
First of all - I like watching your videos. It's very interesting to get a new perspective on Denmark and the danish people :-)
For the most part I think you're spot on with the way danes look and dress. I myself wear black and white sneakers most of the time. But I'll NEVER wear ECCO sandals - not gonna happen ;-)
Regarding make-up... It's very depending on where you live. Me and my family lived in Aarhus for 20 years and most women wear make-up there. But they wear it in a more subtle way than the american women wear their make-up. But 4 years ago we moved to Odder south of Aarhus and here it's more common that women don't wear make-up... why? I don't know, but I don't think it's because they just love their natural looks. I guess it's more like - Now I'm married and then there's no need.
The shoulder bag fashion is actually from the US. It originated in the american hip hop culture and has been taken on by brands such as Eastpak, Stone Island etc. The bags are made to wear as a belt bag around your waist, but hip hoppers began wearing them as shoulder bags and then it became fashion.
I'm pretty sure the same goes for tattoos... that the fashion originated in the US and got picked up by danes rather quickly. And I guess that's a thing about danes - they pick up on fashion from all over the world very quickly.
About jewelry - most women I know wear jewelry, but as with make-up it's very subtle and not to flashy.
    All the best
    Rasmus

This 50-year-old Dane loves her long graying hair and I'm thankful that it's totally ok because - imo - short hair ages you and I would also feel less feminine and attractive if I had to cut my hair short. It's so true, that we love black, or dark colors although you do see a flash of something colorful more often nowadays in the form of a scarf for instance. I think we believe black makes us look stylish, minimalistic, and cool BUT I do remember returning from the States the first time I'd lived there for a year (this was back in 1990) and thinking "Omg, people, what's with all the dark colors? LIVE a little!!" but gradually I fell back into wearing mostly black and finding bright colored clothes a bit ... too much? Not all people look good in bright colors but everyone looks cool in black LOL :P

Yes it’s Swedish. They make high-quality outdoor clothes, tents, packs etc. This particular pack is called Kånken and was made for school kids who were developing back problems from carrying heavy books off one shoulder. It is made of the special fabric called G-1000 that the company made their tents and jackets out of - rain repellent and very durable and develops a patina over time that many people find attractive. Includes a removable seating pad intended for kids waiting for the school bus on cold Swedish mornings. They later made slightly larger sizes to hold laptops and then little kids’ sized that many adults use as a kind of purse. They were ubiquitous in the 70’s especially with school kids and teachers. They fell out of favor in the 80’s and 90’s but returned as a retro classic/design icon. Now they are hugely popular all over the world, with Hollywood stars photographed carrying them and they come in many colors and models.

Fjällrävens are popular throughout Europe but definitely more popular in Denmark & Sweden. They're swedish and when I visited Malmö I saw it everywhere, every age group had one. I think they're mostly popular because it's durable and fashionable at the same time. You know with all black "uniforms" they sometimes use one thing with colour in it so it can pop! I've seen a lot of Danes do this with their Fjällrävens because there are so many bright colour options. It is also sustainable and it can fit a lot of things in it, it can take a lot more than you initially think. And yes they're a bit on the expensive side but when you get one, it can last you 10 years... Oh, another plus is that they're waterproof, it actually started as an outdoor brand but it's been popular in street fashion in the past years :) ua-cam.com/video/wk36qTaaW5A/v-deo.html this video made me want to buy one.
Also thanks for the video, I agree with you on so many points, it's so funny when they go from all black to flower patterned summer dresses.

It is definitely totally acceptable to not do your makeup and hair in Denmark! :) However, most people (in my social circle) do wear makeup and do their hair a little - I think the style is just more natural/less 'perfect' than many other countries. I think the 'average' where I come from (I live in Århus) is mascara, well-groomed, but naturally styled hair, and maybe a very light (key is natural looking!) powder or foundation, very rarely full coverage. Not everyone wear foundation/powder though.
For example: in this video, you styled your hair in very sculpted, beautiful, perfect curls, which looks gorgeous! :) And we really do like it on foreginers, and think nothing of it, but if I, as a Dane, were to wear that as my everyday style, people would accept it, but I would be judged by many in a slightly negative way. People would see it as if I was obsessed with myself, and saw myself as better than others. The law of Jante, I guess, haha. The interesting thing is, foreginers are actually not judged for it, as we know there is a cultural difference, and we secretly like the more polished style. Only the Danes are judged.
I actually make that hairstyle at night, and then sleep on the curls, without touching them. This way, it looks more like a blow-out, and like natural, "woke up like this" hair in the morning. The style will last 2-3 days (I still shower daily, just put my hair in a cap ;) ). I personally like both styles a lot, so I think it is just that Danes prefer the less polished look on themselves. I think the key to Danish style is to do something, without looking like you did something. XD

And yes, regarding feminine clothing, this is VERY difficult in Denmark. If you find a brand, let me know! Rosemunde does have some feminine things, you can find it in Salling or Magasin, or on their own webshop, but other than that, most brands are relatively androgynous.

    - How to describe a "murse" to foreigners: Looks like a fanny pack worn across the chest from under one arm and over the opposite shoulder. 😄
    - Fjällräven (which you do pronounce correctly btw 😉) is a design as basic as it comes and it's almost impossible to wear it out! It lasts for generations!!!

And the rest of the video is so accurate!!! And I have owned 2-3 Fjällräven (fjælræven) but I don't know anything special about them, ig they are just very popular in like 4-5 grade and then they come back later on, it is just a thing idk. The thing about colours - mostly we dress after the season, and I think young people have to go through a fase in life, where they just were black. I noticed you think there are to seasons :-D light and dark - i do not agree, in the end of the winter people look out for spring, longing for the sun and bright days, beginning to build up for summer and colour explosion :-D and in the end of the summer people tend to dress more in the dusty fall colours, and then the winter colours dark with a few light things, except from Christmas, thats a part for it self :-D

I am italian and I live in Århus since 2014. To what you say I can add few more considerations. Danish women are very talented in braiding hair. Usually you can see around a lot of girls with long or short hair in a lots of different hair styles, usually braids of different shapes and lenght. Very stunning. At the same time, I sometimes see girls wearing way too much makeup. Since a lot of girl have a very good skin and complexion I do not understand why they choose to wear a lot of foundation (usually in a color that does not fit the natural complexion of their skin tone, sometimes a bit too orange!) and their eyebrows? Dark and in total contrast qith the blond hair...completely ruined. Finally, some danes are obsessed with getting a tan. In the winter you can see girls and boys with a very dark tan. When the sun start shining they go and spend hours in the the sun to get tanned...so the incidence of skin tumor is pretty high. :/

You look really cute! The American styling of women's hair and makeup reminds me of the hair of Imperial Roman senatorial class - even great intellectuals like Nicole Wallace and Brianna Kielar have this elaborate hair and makeup, to a Dane that is very exotic!
My mother almost always wear her pearl earrings, lovely South sea pearls. I think that's very Danish too 😄
We like to wear these colours because it looks elegant - and sexy! The same with men's hair! It's really sexy with the long hair and a nicely groomed beard. I think Danish women dress very much to impress eachother, as men dress a lot more to be attractive than American men in general.
I have Hilfiger sandals, I'm 40. Even Stephen Colbert talks about men wearing open toed footwear as something undoable, it's really common in Denmark for men to wear what Americans would probably call designer flip-flops. It's comfy and kinda sexy too, despite the fact that Americans seem to think that it doesn't comply with masculinity. It's a shame, cos it can look really sexy

@@MyNewDanishLife There's this American song - is he gay or European? 😁😂
I really dig your outfit! Besides elaborately groomed hair is getting more common - and you certainly have the skills to make it look great!

I think the thing about having your natural hair out is very true. I don’t know about the makeup one because I feel like a lot of people wear makeup just as much as they don’t wear it. Also I think the jewelry one is very split up, so like the younger generations would be wearing more jewelry where the older generations tend to wear a lot less and more modest jewelry.
