1. The riot club 2. Kill your darlings 3. Like Minds 4. The skulls 5. The Oxford murders 6. The dreamers 7. Brideshead revisited 8. Cruel intentions 9. School ties 10. Dorian Gray 11. Dead poets society 12. Harry Potter
I think it's not fully true dark academia in that there's not really violence, secretive, strong internal conflict or murder type dark. There is the war but it's not integral to the plot early on. It's more light academia.
Hmm I feel like After the Dark (2013) might fit in well to a fair few of those requirements but I'm not sure if it necessarily feels Super DA more DA Lite
A Beautiful Mind and A Theory of Everything are really good DA movies, even though they might not check all the boxes for what might constitute a DA film.
Highly recommend 2 DA/ fantasy books - Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo, and Atlas Six by Olivie Blake. Also, Babel by RF Kuang and The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss.
It wasn't my favorite movie, but I would probably say "Saltburn" - it takes place at Oxford and a gothic mansion called Saltburn. The storyline mimicked "The Talented Mr. Ripley" which I actually liked much better, but "Saltburn" is aesthetically appealing to watch (it reminded me of a Sofia Coppola film).
Scent of a Woman is also DA. A commoner attending a fancy prep school being setup for stuff he didn't do, while also learning about life from an, albeit, reluctant mentor.
Love this list, thank you, a few are new to me. Maurice, The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Social Network. Good Will Hunting. For me even Sherlock Holmes is a little DA😊
The WOODS (2006) set in mid century New England..a girls boarding school, or any of the St. Trinian’s films of the 50’s or the modern ones done in 2007…although they’re more “cheeky hellion posh schoolgirls running amok” dark comedies.
the imitation game is also very dark academia there are mathematicians who are basically geniuses trying to build a computer to help defeat the axis during ww2. it's soo good and the setting is amazing and it's based on the true story of alan turing
I'm going to recommend Madame X based on the 1908 French play 'La Femme X'. It's a black and white high society murder mystery. Not set in a school but the old film vibe is definitely DA.
I think a new recent film to add to this list is Saltburn (on Prime). Have you seen it? I watched it and kill your darlings on Friday after getting in a DA mood
I'm sure you've heard of the real life Bullingdon Club that the film The Riot Club is based on, except that apparently the film was in no way extreme enough
me having watched the video before, putting it on for background noise, hears "reminds me of charles & camilla": wtf do the king & queen consort have to do with DA? took a second lol
My List (not all include everything from your list, still has the flavor, imho) Practical Magic Ninth Gate Rosemary's Baby (both versions) Crimson Peak Night of Dark Shadows Heavenly Creatures House of Dark Shadows The Changeling (George C Scott) Marie Antoinette Labyrinth Gothic Legend Half Light The Covenant Legacy (70's movie) Nightworld Satan's School for Girls (70's) Something Wicked This Way Comes Suspiria (both versions) The Craft (both versions) The Initiation of Sarah (70's) The Haunting of Sarah Hardy Ghost Rider Woman In Black The Watcher In The Woods (both versions) Eyes Wide Shut Ares Melancholia Mother! Midaommar Wicker Man (both versions) The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
I am going to recommend: Mona Lisa Smile: Little Women (the latest one); the tv series Nancy Drew; The Saint (with Val Kilmer and Elizabeth Shue set in Oxford and Moscow!). Thanks again! Really love your channel!
That it can be set in France answers an important question I have. As with Goth Rock, there seems to be this unspoken thing it can only be set in the UK. But almost everything Ive enjoyed has tended to be either in France ( think Hannibal Rising ) or in a French colony ( Algeria, or even the US in an AU. )
2006 the covenant… it is supernatural but has rich kids (friend group), posh school, secrets and death. Not to be confused with 2023 the covenant which is a war film.
@@justlanchenYes, it is great fun! It might be a bit off center, but the series 'The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles' is time correct and of course it always has the archaeology,background.... highest production values of any TV series I have ever seen
⚠️Trigger warning for DPS ⚠️ there is a suicide of a prominent character. Loved the movie but it was triggering and I had to recover from it for a good while.
To me dark academia isn't that but the real things is more oxford holmes type old not romance or weird stuff tho like clean mystery murder like Murdoch mysteries or something and like harry Potter so the academic plus greek or language art nothing else like.. to me some things ruin everything
I saw Dead Poets Society in the theater way back in 1989. We just re-watched it. I love it!
1. The riot club
2. Kill your darlings
3. Like Minds
4. The skulls
5. The Oxford murders
6. The dreamers
7. Brideshead revisited
8. Cruel intentions
9. School ties
10. Dorian Gray
11. Dead poets society
12. Harry Potter
ily! going to copy and paste this into the description!!
The Talented Mr Ripley is another good one.
Thank you for this list ❤ Also, i think, Tolkien (2019) deserves to be in this list 🙈
Yes it's a good movie
I second that!
I think it's not fully true dark academia in that there's not really violence, secretive, strong internal conflict or murder type dark. There is the war but it's not integral to the plot early on. It's more light academia.
i adore that movie. it really got overshadowed :( definitely should be on everyones watchlist
Oh yes it’s definitely a very academic film indeed. Also a plus that it’s a true story
Also, Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) or the remake (2018) (not as good in my opinion as the original) are favorites, too.
LOOKING THIS ONE UP👀
I watched this one due to your recommendation and loved it! Thank you!
Original, for sure🇦🇺
Highly recommend 2 DA/ fantasy books - Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo, and Atlas Six by Olivie Blake. Also, Babel by RF Kuang and The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss.
OooO!! I've read the first two but I'll add the others to my reading list!!
Cracks (2009) and The Moth Diaries (2011) and The Hole (2001) come to mind as some of my favorite DA movies.
I also love A Discovery of Witches. The story of a powerful book. Early episodes are filmed at Oxford. 4:50
Oh yes totally!! This one is on my DA tv series list!!
I would add two movies to the list: The Imitation Game and The Theory of Everything
oh these are good!!!!
Woah! Old universities have a mystique of their own. Thanks for sharing!
Great list ❤Thank you!
I feel like we have similar taste I definitely recommend Penny Dreadful 😉
Loved Penny Dreadful

The storyline mimicked "The Talented Mr. Ripley" which I actually liked much better, but "Saltburn" is aesthetically appealing to watch (it reminded me of a Sofia Coppola film).
10:15 yessss Ben Barnes 😍😍😍 one of my fav actorrr!! Btw, love that list! I'm taking notes!!😊
Right!! He is a real life prince I swear 🥵
Scent of a Woman is also DA. A commoner attending a fancy prep school being setup for stuff he didn't do, while also learning about life from an, albeit, reluctant mentor.
Les Choristes would fit these criteria as well and is just beautiful.
Love this list, thank you, a few are new to me.
Maurice, The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Social Network. Good Will Hunting. For me even Sherlock Holmes is a little DA😊
Maurice is awesome
omg Yeah these are totally DA!!
A LITTLE! 💥
Oh yes, I am definitely in love with Ben Barnes. Shadow and Bone is fantastic!
I’m so excited to watch the ones I haven’t seen. I remember going to the theater for The Skulls. Haha it was so good!
Oh no way!! I love that you got to see it in theaters!
"Zombi Child" (half DA, half Voodoo), is a french movie that I recommend ! 🙂
The WOODS (2006) set in mid century New England..a girls boarding school, or any of the St. Trinian’s films of the 50’s or the modern ones done in 2007…although they’re more “cheeky hellion posh schoolgirls running amok” dark comedies.
I started getting into DA with movies and I am glad to see few I haven't seen yet which are definitely now on my to watch list
Yes to Ben Barnes 👍
Recommend: The Paper Chase, Lindsay Anderson's "IF", The Stranger (Orson Welles), and Goodbye Mr. Chips, Compulsion (1959), The Children's Hour.
the imitation game is also very dark academia
there are mathematicians who are basically geniuses trying to build a computer to help defeat the axis during ww2. it's soo good and the setting is amazing and it's based on the true story of alan turing

I'm sure you've heard of the real life Bullingdon Club that the film The Riot Club is based on, except that apparently the film was in no way extreme enough
Thanks for sharing. Look forward to watching several of these I haven't seen. Enjoy watching your videos.
The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.
and
absolutely....
Goodbye Mr Chipps. 🙏
Both a novel and a movie would you agree with Bret Easton Ellis's Rules of Attraction for DA
Looking this up!!
me having watched the video before, putting it on for background noise, hears "reminds me of charles & camilla": wtf do the king & queen consort have to do with DA?

@@justlanchenI added more movies to the list.
I am going to recommend: Mona Lisa Smile: Little Women (the latest one); the tv series Nancy Drew; The Saint (with Val Kilmer and Elizabeth Shue set in Oxford and Moscow!). Thanks again! Really love your channel!

Just saw Surprised By Oxford. It was fantastic.
Alfred Hitchcock's 'Rope' I feel meets your requirements. I also feel the movie 'The Ninth Gate', is a DA film.
yep on 9th gate
Great list, I haven’t seen some of these. I recommend The Covenant 2006
I just watched like minds and I actually love that movie even if the plot is a bit convoluted
thank you for this!
Of course lovely
10:32 this is the number one dark academia Movie , the best 💯🤎🍁🪔📚📜
2006 the covenant… it is supernatural but has rich kids (friend group), posh school, secrets and death. Not to be confused with 2023 the covenant which is a war film.
Link to your shirt and vest, please?
they are both thrifted 😭 the vest was from the mens section and I sewed it to fit me
The Emperor's Club is definitely DA.
Another good one: Young Sherlock Holmes
Have you considered the three films and TV series 'The Librarians'? A good one, trippy and clever...
Yes! I love that show 🥵I mentioned it in my DA tv shows video
@@justlanchenYes, it is great fun! It might be a bit off center, but the series 'The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles' is time correct and of course it always has the archaeology,background.... highest production values of any TV series I have ever seen
I recommend Mona Lisa Smile
why does NOBODY ever mention "The Talented Mr Ripley" in these Dark Academia films?
I haven’t seen it but I’ll watch it now!
The talented mr Ripley is also DA in my opinion, it isn't in a school setting but it is obsessive and there are a lot of secrets.
⚠️Trigger warning for DPS ⚠️ there is a suicide of a prominent character.
Loved the movie but it was triggering and I had to recover from it for a good while.
Yay!!!!
I would recommend Another Country.
It's crazy how none of the movies mentioned are on my country's netflix;-;
SAME! I had to get them all from amazon
To me dark academia isn't that but the real things is more oxford holmes type old not romance or weird stuff tho like clean mystery murder like Murdoch mysteries or something and like harry Potter so the academic plus greek or language art nothing else like.. to me some things ruin everything
i don't know that I'd call it dark academia but, killing mr griffin
I dont get how is The Dreamers a dark academic movie
I thought you said these da movies wouldn’t be all about murder lol the first 5 movies deal with death ☠️.
Haha wait what That’s not what I said, I just watched it. Pretty much any dark academia movie, book, ect. involves murder, death or something tragic
Me who hasn't read a book in years:
Do you know you look a hint like Keira Knightley
The original Dorian Gray was way better.
Matilda??😟🤔
