We need Emily all the time in the US. Great job!!!!
Shes a deluded fool. A virtue signalling biased buffoon
Owen Ent stay mad
All credit to Emily Maitliss for not allowing Sean Spicer to wriggle his way out of the questioning. The BBC doesn't always serve the UK as fairly as we would like but she did excel in this interview.
Christine Hathaway-Coley the bbc is propaganda
Maitliss what a ray of sunshine. Andrew Neil is literally the only BBC commentator that's fair and balanced.
Emily maitlis is cancer
Christine Hathaway-Coley - Every once in a while a pig finds a truffle....
Interesting, what exactly is she lying about here.
No matter how he tries to spin it in is pathetic book, Spicer will be remember as the enabler of the biggest liar in the history of the world.
Jj T The only thing he says he did wrong was the inauguration crowd whereas he continued to lie for Trump for many months after
So Sean has learnt nothing from his experiences except that when you make a mistake: double down and sell your story. Dreadful.
Ian P You can't sell it if people aren't buying.
Ian P He most likely can't get a job . Even Faux News and Breitbart doesn't want him.
Josie Fox he’s still in the navy reserves so he does have a job technically 💁🏼♂️💁🏼♂️💁🏼♂️
I can't understand why reporters in the US can't ask tough questions like this. Great interview!
People only appear on networks that are favorable to them.
Sarah, We've been bought out. Our "President' has been compromised....we are currently in a political crisis. Sad, but true. Many of us are worried.
BBC putting American "journalists" to shame.
Damn right
This woman is a leftist propagandist gtfoh
Please point out where and how she was saying anything remotely propaganda, if not, you gtfo.
What Saganator said!!!
joe smith Propagandist? There was nothing misleading about the interview. She asked Mr. Spicer for explanations on his "greatest hits" as White House Press secretary. As well as asking his opinion on events that have transpired since his exit.
Sean Spicer's tendency to fall back on evasion, feigning ignorance or attack the line of questioning, rather than answer the question is telling.
Emily Your journalism professor should be proud as well as BBC & your viewers. Well done me lady.
this is how to handle a weasel
Yeah, he handled her pretty well.
Still ducking and weaving. The man is a liar - like the man he worked for
Derek Elliott no he answered straight up every time. Please give me an example of what lies they have told.
jhonny xxd inauguration figures
johnphilbill in the interview
TRUMP 2020
jhonny xxd
TRUMP 2020
He looks so weak and completely passive to Trump.
Now THAT'S journalism!
Thank you, Emily Maitlis. Our allies are tougher on this administration than our press.
She is an excellent interviewer and she follows up and is consistent in her questioning. Spicer thought he would get the kid glove treatment while he sold some books. Not happening. The British media is comprised of adults, unlike in the former Colonies.
You must be joking the British media is the laughing stock of the world with it's propaganda, only North Korea is worse.
And neither are you, there are certainly plenty of people like you that just swallow what they are fed, that's for sure.
Paul Kaitel Its painful that you people think you are smart very painful
The truth hurts.
Hmm yeah it does its why u people try and deflect it so much
It is tragic how far the country has fallen since Obama vacated the White House.
The legacies of Cameron and Obama are in tatters, which is probably one of the saddest things to have happened in this decade...
But can you name any actual policy achievements Obama delivered apart from being a "nice guy"?
Please do not equate weaselly Cameron with Obama.
They were both similar minded men who, in my opinion at least, rescued their countries from economic oblivion and restored some trust back into politics (at least for a while) - it's sad that neither of them are still in charge...
Cameron and Obama were like-minded neo-liberal panderers to Wall Street and the city ... is more like it! And did I mention the destruction of Libya and Syria?
But, but, I wrote a book...
LOL!
And even still, he lies.
Yes, and yet he says his first loyalty is to his country. A pathalogical liar, just like trump.
Traitor, defending the indefensible
Just like anyone defending the antisemitic Labour party isnt it.
If you still support Trump and the Republicans even now, then im afraid your too far gone for help. Even shrinks give up when people deny facts when put in front of them
Just like anyone that still supports the Labour party is an antisemitic communist then.
So, if you don't support Trump you are anti Jewish lol great come back. Ignore all the facts that the president is a narcissistic liar and you become anti Jewish. You really are a moron
Who said that, oh yeah it was you, not me, that makes you the idiot.
Thank you Emily, for holding this doublespeaking weasel's feet to the fire.
There was nothing misleading about the interview. She asked Mr. Spicer for his opinion or explanations on his "greatest hits" as White House Press secretary. As well as asking his opinion on events that have transpired since his exit.
Sean Spicer's tendency to fall back on evasion, feigning ignorance or attack the line of questioning, rather than answer the question is telling.
Whatever your politics, she is right on the destruction of the discourse. Truth is now irrelevant and any criticism is automatically dismissed as ''fake news''.
Yeah, like people saying antisemitism in the Labour party is fake news when it's obviously true.
Ciaran O'Connell there is a difference from criticism and reporting fake news
+Alexander The Great Yeah because the likes of Trump is really measured & listens to criticism, doesn't he? Not like he has forced his cabinet members many times to publicly lavish him with praise as a camera goes around the room. That's a man who will listen to valid criticism & never lash out at the slightest disagreement or criticism against him, right?
LOL.
Ciaran O'Connell fighting back against fake news and smears is a good thing.
+Alexander The Great Yeah, it is a real shame that every single media outlet and journalist doesn't suck his cock like Fox and Sean Hannity? I mean, if you aren't kissing Trump's ass every night, you are basically attacking & smearing him, amirite? To criticise Trump over pulling out of the climate change deal, believing a thug like Putin over your own nation, his tariffs which he then gives $12 billion to farmers so he doesn't lose them politically as others suffer, his weakening of key alliances which helped prevent any large wars since 1945 and protected the world from further communism, his disturbing love for authoritarian leaders around the world as he consistently undermines the basic pillars of democracy in America and aboard, his shady & corrupt decades of business dealings, his destruction of the public discourse as he creates evermore division & hatred whereas every other previous president at least TRIED to compromise on issues is just all fake news. Instead they should be all like North Korea where beloved leader Trump can do no wrong & that he is a gift from God.
Christ almighty, you need to move to a dictatorship or an authoritarian regime like Russia which kills hundreds of critical journalists if you want to live in your nightmarish utopia of the entire media is sucking the cocks of it's nations leader.
“You have corrupted discourse for the entire world by going along with these lies.” 👏👏👏
what a painful screen time for some book publicity
Man will be on the late night shows I reckon, I hope to fuck they don't let him off easy
Its long overdue for the American media to tackle Trump and his acolytes as happens in the UK. No indulging politicians!
NPR, PBS and ProPublica etc. do that in the US.. Needless to say a parochial Brit like you has never even heard of them. Go back to watching royal weddings and the World Cup and forget how your country's a bankrupt, totalitarian irrelevance...
PAROCHIAL? ROFL! The World Cup is watched by BILLIONS around the world-it's THE biggest sporting event- compare to the parochial NFL & the "world series"- hype or what? Yes We know about PBS- Brits know a lot more about US "culture" and institutions than Americans do about the rest of the world. America is one crazy effed up country- just look at the ridiculous clown president- batshit crazy Trump
As usual, you miss the point. If you knew about NPR, ProPublica you wouldn't have made your initial comment. That's blindingly obvious.
As for World Cup, Super Bowl etc., they're distractions. The fact you boast about more idiots watching soccer than the NFL just confirms your petty mindedness.
Re batshit crazy, clown leaders how about Blair, Cameron and May? Blair's a war criminal, Cameron pissed away your country on a gamble and May can't even leave the EU without fucking it up.
Now go watch a Royal Wedding video and leave the US, China and Russia to take care of business.
No YOU miss the point- The BBC is a mainstream channel- the biggest in the UK and watched/respected across the world for almost 100 years. NPR ProPublica? Minority/niche organisations. Your mini me Steve Bannon act is a bit tiresome. Do the nurses at your secure mental unit realise you have access to their computer?
Yeah, PBS with its 350 member stations watched by 200 million people in 80% of US households...I'd call that a niche. I guess that's small change to you in a country of 60 million.
Not to mention 90 million that listen to NPR - another niche as I'm sure you'd agree.
Not to mention CNN watched the world over and copied by BBC World Service....
But hey, your British sense of inferiority is forgivable. The Americans shit on you in two wars and bailed you out in two world wars... I'd be resentful too if I had to live with that history...
Your turn bitch....
Excellent interview. She is good. Sean needs more time to reflect on his contribution to the erosion of the US values system and democracy.
If only the BBC would talk about the erosion of the UK's values system and democracy.
But hey, the BBC can distract the stupid Brits with Royal weddings and the World Cup.
Sean Spicer : still a political tool of the Trump era. The emphasis , of course, is on "tool".
Excellent interview. American media should follow suit.
This is a great interview. Well done Emily Maitlis.
I'd love to know more about this...does anyone know if Sean Spicer has written a book or anything? He probably hasn't...he would have mentioned it.
I am sick of tired of all the Trump scandals!! It’s crazy... Every day something new. Sad that we are stuck with this clown.
When did shucking and jiving become so acceptable in the US?
BBC, News for grownups.
Great sarcasm there.
Indeed.
The good old British inferiority complex is alive and well. Check out, NPR, PBS, Frontline and ProPublica and learn.
Dude, Britain is America's bitch. It's time you faced up to reality. No one gives a fuck what the UK says....
I can't WAIT to see her interview Sarah 😲😲😲
This hurts to watch but the movies that are gonna be made about this nonsense are gonna be hilarious. It just sucks that we'll just have to read the subtitles in Russian.
Mark C. You are just too cute.
Spicer bombed this interview lol!!
Not as bad as Ash Sakur bombed against Piers Morgan.
Still the obfuscator. Sean Spicer
ah, so that's what real journalism looks like.
Maitliss is a hero!
The eyes of this guy. Looks like he just weathered the Tet offensive.
Dear future viewer. Just go to @8:37. You're welcome.
When you're the world's biggest weasel, we're going to remind you every day.
Alfalfa Male and we ll remind you that trump is the potus everyday
And we'll remind he wouldn't have won without the help of the Russians everyday.
Alfalfa Male most of us republicans don’t have a problem with Russia, so that’s fine. The courts are what matters. In 20 years your Russian hysteria will be a distant memory
He’s getting some stiff competition from Sarah Huckabee Sanders these days though...
Great interviewer!
This is how you interview the Trump world.
Like all narcissists, "We all make mistakes" OURS are understandable and forgivable, yours are not!
This would've been a great moment for redemption. He blew it. Trump is the worst hill to die on.
Spicer is still part of the Trump cult, personality cult.
why is the bbc giving this guy a platform to sell his book? we've heard all of these lies and misdirections before.
Spicer was drawn in with the chance to sell his book and he ran into an actual journalist.
Compared to the supine LBC, this was pretty good.
Tabs ‘ not my implications at all. i listen to this often, hence the "heard it all before" read what's said and give it some thought before you jump to baseless assumptions.
I reckon the interview, would compel anybody who was ambivalent, indifferent, or hadn't considered reading the book; obdurate in a newly acquired conviction, to avoid it, at all costs.
The "platform" given by the BBC won't hold his weight, far less public scrutiny. ;-)
Tabs ‘
.....It sounds like your ready for high office.
Once elected, those, "vermin" whose vulnerabilities gullibility, & bigotry you exploited to get into power; can be subject to the same contempt, as the media and political adversaries.
To begin with, you can feign the illusion of competence and good intention.
Within 18-24 months you'll be able to revoke the rights of some press, create (for profit) jails for children of asylum seekers & refugees, whilst deporting their parents, with no audit trail or plan to reunite the families. You can tell thousands of lies. Your ignorance of international trade can criple swathes of the economy etc etc etc......
If you do it, in plain sight, with the backing of state media, you'll be fine.
As the saying goes "I really don't care, do U?"[sic].
After appointing key judges, who share your world view...Soon you can demand to be styled as "The Eternal Grand High Tabs ‘, Leader, Lord Master, Pastor, and Paterfamilias of all", whilst declaring: "All the best people are saying, you should be 'President for Life' "!
I know it sounds crazy; but "believe me". Normalising declarations like "stable genius" and praising dictators makes anything possible......
;-)
What a real journalist is...some folks on Fox might want to take a few notes--except Chris Wallace
I love powerful woman like Emily, she knows her stuff!!!
Clarified!?!? Even with a change in the word from would to wouldn't the rest of the context before and after stayed with the original word not the walk back bs
Emily does a great interview. No messin around and on point. Nice job. I would love to see her interview Trump.
So would I, she couldn't handle the Trump!
Dodging the questions, still a politician.
She is amazing. I need to shake her hand.
Gawd, this interviewer makes any US interviewer look like a interviewee sycophant. US media are utterly pathetically fawning and gawping towards chronic liars.
🤥 liar!!!
Spicer handling the interview like he's still a part of the administration. He clearly drank way too much Kool Aid.
8:49 starts the most fabulous example of why freedom of the press is so essential. There is no one in America doing this. I want to thank Emily Maitlis for confronting Sean Spicer. He bent the truth like Joseph Goebbels & must be held to account.
#BBC
It's a pity the BBC didn't provide some bushes for him to hide in.
Excellent Journalism Skills
He's still lying
I wish we had more journalists like her in America... we usually get the "alright let's move on" line whenever things start to get real.
We also have an amazing -rottweiler- interviewer called *Jeremy Paxman* (who anchored *BBC Newsnight* before Emily). He once asked our *Home Secretary, Michael Howard* the same question 12 times in 90 seconds (14 in total if you count the same Q expressed a different way at first).
It's on UA-cam - and worth 1'47" of your time. Jeremy sadly now has Parkinson's, but was one of our most fearless political interviewers.
Interesting but not a man to rely on in a crisis and a desperate exercise in post event rationalisation.
This woman definitely needs to be in the WH press corps. Respectful, articulate, yet relentless at pursuing answers to relevant questions. Quite impressive.
Wow, he is just not trained for this kind of interview.
This was good. "He meant to say, What I was trying to do and clearly not well, We all make mistakes." These are commonly used phrases by the Trump associates. Doesn't that show, at the very least that these people are inept?
Emily Maitlis is a great example of active listening. She knows the subject inside out and responds fluidly to what the interviewee says. It’s never a list of questions from her it’s always answer and rebuttal. This should be shown to all journalism students around the world
Quite. Emily is an absolute gem - did you see her BBC Prince Andrew interview? If not it really is worth your time, if ghastly.
Glad he's gone, can't ever wash that stink off. The man sold his soul, now he's making what he can off of it. Sad...
His literal argument for Trump's lies and untruths as 'things he thinks and feels' - I think and feel that Sean Spicer should be stuck with shit-tipped spears, but we don't always entertain the mental meanderings of daft people.
This guy reminds me of Peter Griffin
the.economist1 omg yes he does! A real life dummy 😩
the.economist1: That is incredibly unfair. Leave Peter Griffin out of this!
Well done Emily Maitlis. Very well done. Your country thanks you.
You guys remember when Sean hid in the bushes outside the WH to avoid the press?😂😂😂
I wish she could interview Kelly Ann the Consway! Well done
Melissa McCarthy has let herself go...
Mueller is coming Spicey. Let's hope you are clean.
The look on his face! ... "I want to sell my book, why are you such a big MEANIE" lol. She landed about a half dozen body blows there. Well done.
Emily is a credit to my late fathers profession, journalism. Back of the net Emily, excellent work. :)
DAMN! I never thought I would see this on the BBC. That was some good critical reporting. NICE! please keep this up.
Bravo to this reporter for not allowing a Trump person to talk and shout over her. Spicer's trying the entire Trump/asshole playbook, the gaslighting, the fake strawman arguments, the whataboutisms, and Maitlis is ready.
Now, this would also happen in the States, but the Trump crew knows this and has ducked nearly every Q&A session with US reporters.
He didn't serve his country. He lied to his country. These people seem to have no shame.
I agree.
👏👏👏👏👏
"If we're going to judge everybody by private comments they may or may not have made..." HE MADE THOSE COMMENTS. This isn't a hypothetical. Pushing it back to a "what if" is part of the problem.
I hope everyone in the US political press watches this as a how-to primer. An almost flawless succinct interview conducted with complete respectful decorum whilst not shying from toughest question areas. A small improvement imho is that she could have moved on a bit earlier to cover other matters once the inauguration numbers issue had been addressed.
I wonder if Sean Spicer has written a book or anything.
Great interview, thank you.
Dammit - Brits are so on point and talentedit comes to questioning on politics. They do this even to their own. Hats off Emily !
how do you muddy the water in a swamp?....pretend it isn't a swamp
Sounds like Spicer still works for Trump. His double-speak sounds way too familiar. “... rush to judgment...”?!?!
Does the BBC interviewer press the left as fiercely??
guys I don't know if this guy has written a book yet?? can anyone help... would love to hear more
Yes! This is how every press briefing from the White House should be conducted, every single interview with White House Staff and Cabinet member. Thank you BBC. Thank you Emily.
Great interview!
Yesssss Emily Maitlis! Good job!!
This journalist is soooo good 🙌🙌🙌 😂 In your face Spicer!!!!!!
OMG Same ole questions that have been asked, answered over & over ad nauseam
Spicer still lying. But, considering it was the first "skill" on his resume, we shouldn't be surprised.
This is HOW you do it. Kudos to Ms Maitlis
Now that's how you do an interview...
Yeah, Spicy, just answer the damn question.
I don’t think that went the way he thought it would...
Sean Spicer reminds me of Michael Scott from the office
Constant lying is not making mistakes but a effort to insult my integrity and intelligence
