Fun fact: "at 7 PM a main hatchway caved in" was later changed to "At 7 PM it grew dark it was then" to reflect new information , yet, although he revised the lyric, Gordon never re-recorded the song to reflect the lyric change.
He was able to revise this Edmund Fitzgerald lyric on his final album "Live At Royal Albert Hall." He also revised "If You Could Read My Mind" in accordance with his daughter Ingrid's request.
I used to do this on my turntable back in the late 1970's . I played the single 45-rpm version, at 33 1/3 rpm to achieve a similar effect. Also did the reverse, played the LP at 45 rpm. Those acetates are now since long gone, but I have the memories.
I have those 1980's boom box portable Panasonic rx5100 cassette player's and when the 8"D battery gets wore down it plays slowed cassettes except then "also you can get a really neat warbled sounding tape getting ate up and tape creasing it's pretty rare there the best radios.
That first cord hit
