Everyone's opinions are just that, just like mine! I totally understand where you and your husband are at! :) I am a native Californian born in Hollywood but my business has me always traveling every single month. I sold my rentals in Los Angeles in 2017 and bought my home in Temecula and sold our home in 2020. Moved from Temecula to Austin, TX and my business had me going back to CA, I was commuting. I would fly back & forth, but when I have a month and a half of downtime, I would drive straight from Los Angeles to Austin, TX just to get home and be with my husband. It took me 22 hours, for coffee, fuel & lady's room break all while I had my 20-year-old Chihuahua with me, she was my traveling companion. I loved Austin, TX & Parker, TX, and near Frisco, TX. We lived in North Austin, the border of Cedar Park near Georgetown & Round Rock, TX. Where we lived, we were 20 - 30 minutes away from Downtown Austin which was perfect and we were 15 minutes from the Domain. Honestly, Austin reminds me of a smaller scale of Silver Lake but I still loved how green everything was similar to OR. Austin does have a lot of homeless in the Downtown area, not as bad a DTLA, I worked in DTLA and lived in Montecito Heights in Los Angeles. We left Austin, because of the Tech Giants coming in and it will be or is now a smaller scale of Silicon Valley / San Jose. In Austin, TX 6th Street reminds me of a much smaller scale of New Orleans and Rainey Street is very nice too! I now live in Florida, and the East side of FL reminds me of Cancun and the West side reminds me of Hawaii. Everyone is going to tell you where to go and don't go. My husband and I did the same thing, what is going to be more beneficial for our pockets, and make more money at the same time investing. My husband is also from the East Coast from PA and worked and lived in NY & NJ as he was also in the Military. Austin has a lot of vegan restaurants, as I am a vegan as well. You will love the HEB markets, I wish they were everywhere. Austin prices are well overpriced and it's not worth it anymore, maybe back in 2017 it would have been a steal. If I went back to TX it would probably be outside of Dallas. Here's a trick I use to find a great area because I too can go down a rabbit hole of researching before I plant my feet on the ground, I always look for Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, and other Healthy Markets in the area. That will give you an idea of where to live since these are not in every city like they are mostly in Southern California. These markets are only placed in the desired areas, it's an unfortunate way to put it but it's all based on demographics.
Check out Charleston, SC, it’s a vibrant young city with lots to do and a great place to raise a family for when you have kids. Also, very close to the beach and an easy flight to NYC! Loved living there and miss it!
I’ve moved 2 months ago from NYC to Colorado Springs. Love it so much, a lot of nature, hiking, 4 seasons and if you doing skiing or snowboarding it’s the best place to go.
Charlotte, NC is a great mix. I went to college there. I also love Raleigh, NC. Both are very green with lots of parks, lakes, trails, etc but there are also a million things to do like fitness classes, shops, restaurants, and they both have great airports. Raleigh also some of the best medical care in the country (Duke, UNC, WakeMed)
Would you consider Chicago? Massive Polish community ( and diversity in general). It’s not „cheap” but cheaper than California lol . Food is great, endless options for activities whether in the city or out, etc.
Glowa do góry!
Nashville would be great. Large European community bc of the base, surrounded by nature in Nashville, Chattanooga, and knoxvillle. The city isn’t huge but a ton of collaboration opportunities bc of the music and entertainment industry here/ a ton of influencers. Green hills or 12 south would be a nice area for you. Sylvan park or the nations would also be slightly out of the city (7 minutes by car) but gives you walking trails, parks, and local walkable shops/ eats
I love Austin, but it's too hot in the summer. I would choose Nashville over Austin, but nothing beats the beauty, weather, and people in Northern California. It's worth the extra money to have a garden year-round. I live about 35 miles North of San Francisco in a house built in 1900 on 2.5 acres with hens, pigs, sheep, and a garden. We have a beautiful historic downtown with farm to table food, cute shops, and tons of antique stores and thrift shops. There are 100s of historic homes. Within 20 minutes, I can go to the beach, vineyards & wineries, redwoods, the river, or several lakes. There are so many other cute towns full of charm and character within 45 minutes. You can even take a day trip to Tahoe and go play in the snow for the day. I just feel like we have so much beauty all around us, and the people are amazing. It's the kind of place where if you leave your wallet somewhere, people will go out of their way to get your wallet back to you. We also have really good public schools. I've been all over this country, and I can't find anywhere that compares. It's worth paying more for housing because you get so much in return. I don't feel the same about Southern California. It's a completely different world.
Oh you guys, I hope that you will get your hearts’ desires! I am leaning towards TX, TN or FL. Marta don’t worry, it’ll be easier to get to NY from either of those states 😅. Sometimes it’s hard to choose when you have too many options! It will all work out 🙌🏾
My Gramdma lives in Sequim, WA and there are so many British people there. She was born in Yorkshire, England and absolutely loves living in Sequim. She has a group of friends that have tea parties every month, it's really cute.
Aw man who says downtown Austin is like LA? No way! As far as homelessness etc. (East side yes) Native Texan here, and I live downtown in Rainey Street and I also moved from Orange County. It really depends on what your goals are for moving especially when you are asking other people. Are their goals the same as yours? Austin is the IT city right now for entrepreneurs 1000000%. Living downtown is just different than living 30 monies outside of it. The Austin circle is very small and everyone is building something and working on themselves, and so open to helping each other 😊 Hopefully you guys get a chance to see downtown much more. The west side is beautiful!!! But more expensive. Bee Caves is very beautiful! I lived out there too before moving downtown
Be careful in Arizona because large companies from other countries (Saudi Arabia) are buying huge parcels of land in order to grow food expending the aquifers so that folks who have lived in these areas for generations aren’t able to because there is no water! Good luck on your journey to find a new home! Sending you so much love & light
Check out Westchester county in NY. White plains specifically. I lived in Thornwood for 2 years the nature there is outstanding full of woods where I used to go on long walks with my dog. You would also be pretty close to the city.
No such thing as "European culture". And it comes from someone who comes from Poland and travelled extensively both within and outside Europe. There is no European "culture", there are "cultures". Indeed, USA is a huge, diverse country, but Europe is a continent with over 50 different (native) cultures, multiple languages (even across one country) different mindsets, values, traditions, religions and life styles. Comparing USA to "Europe" is already a mistake but talking about "European culture" is simply misleading. Americans often assume Europe = the glamorous side of Paris + Italian coffee + Swiss Alps + Berlin nightlife. I think being a little bit more specific saves them a lot of confusion and dissapointment. Southern Europeans are nothing like Northern Europeans, Eastern Europeans are nothing like Northern/Western Europeans.
