If you film 4k and plan to export it full hd, then what I would do is also ZOOM IN in post. This way it could actually double-triple your focal lenght without significant image quality loss. Thanks for inspiring me!

The 100-400 GM and the sigma 70mm macro have been my go to lenses for almost everything I shoot. I started watching this channel before you got in to wildlife filmmaking and I'm super stoked to see that you're discovering this new field. What I can say is: there is so much more to wildlife than just birds and squirrels. Once you're in deep into learning about the wonders of the world there's no turning back. You'll be hooked. I have the 70-200 Sony would love the 100-400 but I’m highly satisfied so far with it. And the results of a touch of clear image zoom to 300 on it 4k video are so smooth and satisfying it like your 200-400 a very premium build blows my mind. By the way the tripod mount does come off after twisting counter clockwise just pull up the knob and it’ll come off. More wildlife please 🙏 from a happy white lens owner 👍
A few videos ago you told me to use my gear till it basically falls apart. So, I dove deep into forums going back three years, and I learned a few approaches toward "optimizing" the Fuji X-T3 with the 100-400mm. Those few weeks of actual detail oriented sifting and studying led to higher keeper rates. I took the best photo I've ever taken just three days ago. I'm looking forward to having a few proofs come back before I print and frame it as a gift to the girl who joined me on that trip for her birthday. That same day Fuji autofocus performance for birds in flight was abysmal, but it did well when birds are in the sun and not flying. Of course the desire for more reach is difficult to shake, but I concur with your advice for not worrying about filling the frame. You had lovely footage of what looked like a European starling on a street lamp, which I enjoyed the composition of very much. Aiming for better compositions improved my experience both in the field and in post, and as a result of critically assessing compositional elements my eye is noticing more opportunities that otherwise hide in plain sight among the mundane. One day Fuji will release that 150-600mm lens, and the desire for reach will grow to behemoth levels, but for now I'm enjoying the 100-400 again. You might try portrait work with the 70-300, for I've taken my lovely compressed portraits with the 100-400 in portrait orientation @ 100mm. I'm looking forward to what the X-H2 has in store or even what 2023 has in store for Fuji bodies; it'd be nice to be able to have the extra MP for larger prints.
My primary kit for wildlife right now is a 70-200 + 2x TC. It's pretty versatile, and 400mm really is just enough for wildlife if you don't mind doing a bit of cropping.
Congrats you man! Your very first GM is a very solid one indeed. Honestly I think this was the most legitimate option for you which you even didn't consider before! Just buy teleconvertors if needed more reach. At least the 1.4x one. And don't underestimate the macro capability of this magnificent lens! Can't wait for your 240p shots! You might need a monopod in the future... Will improve the quality and makes the footage looking more pro.
Kasey........................now you're getting to grips with the advantages of manual focus, you simply can NOT better the Lumix G9 and the 100-300 or 100-400 lens. A FAR more superior set-up than anything here.
@@cameraconspiracies I have used an old 100-300 with Mega O.I.S which I don’t believe is even compatible with dual is in G9 and I was getting usable shots at the maximum focal length. The 100-400 with dual is should be much better even at 400. Using Lock Is for static shots is pretty amazing.
I took photos of pigeons and similarly sized birds on 50mm f0.95 manual and felt rather comfortable, because I took my time and didn't rush anywhere. It wasn't "wildlife" though, just city animals, but that's still frantically moving cats and dogs and birds. I sat comfortably at f2-f2.8, sometimes reaching for f16 when i need background for the context, and sometimes reaching for f0.95 just for the extra challenge, and it all produced great pics. So yeah there's no need to take out tele for animals but it sure does help.

I started with a 24-70mm lens and made some good pictures of roe deer with it. It just keeps you from going to close to the animal and gives it some space to breath. I later upgraded to a 60-600mm. Depending on how close i get (difficult in autumn because of hunting season) i still sometimes end up using "only" 200mm. It's a heavy lens, but you can leave stuff like a 70-200 etc. at home, if you have enough light.
Sony really need to amp up a7Siii with that bird autofocus in video. Watch Ryan Mense video where he talks in depth about the capabilities of a7Siii in the wild. It is frustrating that such an amazing camera is having trouble to focus on birds in flight.

If you can get your hand on an A7iv, it would be the perfect match for the 100-400. In crop mode, you get more reach, 4K oversampled from 5K and rolling shutter is well controlled unlike the full frame 4K.
@@cameraconspiracies That's right, 240p is really nice to have for wildlife but A7iv 120 1080 is surprisingly good...sure good enough for UA-cam. But that rolling shutter will ruin your other glory shots in other than 60p. But man if the clear image zoom works in 4k 60p in A7iv that would be some great reach. Oh and the focus breath compensation will also crop some... Not sure how about this lens though.
200-600mm for me and birds right now. Can't afford that $17,000 prime stuff yet. You ended up paying as much for 100mm to 400mm as for 200 to 600mm. Your call but after 20 years of bird photography the bigger the better does the job.Similar quality with more versatility. Don't mess around with teleconverters on a zoom lens. They were designed originally for big primes and that is where they should stay.
I'm getting away with 24-240, works ok with crop mode + clear image zoom. Also I'm using a camcorder ax43 (about 24 - 500mm) for situations like a bison crossing the road, you pull over and pull out the camcorder and treat it like it's an iPhone. the ax43 always sits on my passenger seat. Plus the camcorder is 625g with everything included.
I swear by that 100-400 GM. Had it for a few years now, dropped it and paid Sony the premium to rebuild it. I also had the 200-600 briefly, but returned it. It just wasn't as sexy of a mistress as the GM is. The 1.4x TC is surprisingly sharp on it, too, though I'm a photography loser, so I don't know how well it'll do for video with the 1.4x. Is it your first GM? I thought you had the 24 GM at one point. I seem to remember you running up and down a hallway testing it.
Getting close to your subject is way more important for wildlife shooting than a long lens. A long lens photo from too far away still looks like crap. I actually like environmental wildlife images, but then you have to compose it as a landscape closeup with the animal as an accent. Your Fuji footage is way better than the Sony. Had you gotten closer, even better. 300mm is like 450mm full frame, which is very useable. I love my T5 with the RF 100-500 and 1.4x extender. So, up to 700mm. And I still need to get closer. Your 100-400 GM should be sweet. I look forward to your upcoming footage.
You done good. The joys of a long lens are not to be underestimated. 400mm is the outer limit of what you can easily hand hold. MF is essential skillz, man. Looking fwd to seeing results.
If you’re in manual focus just back button focus instead of turning and turning the ring. It’ll get you close to your subject at the very least. That should work on any camera system.
A fabulous video, You have a brilliant lens there! I have used one for years and works great with a 1.4x Tele too, I do use a 600mm with a 2 x Tele as well a lot so 400mm might not be enough lol
I've seen a lot of great work from pretentious Audubon society jerks with 15k kits and I have to say your wildlife footage is far better and much appreciated
I do bird photography. I have spots I can walk up the mountain and catch golden eagles flying up. . I hide behind a giant Boulder and they pass by at 30ft away.. I've misses incredible shots with the 100-400. ....50-200mm would be plenty.
Congratz! talking about smoothness, you should see how smooth the 70-200gm2 is, holding it with the 100-400 side by side, is night and day of a difference, the 70-200's zoom ring is super smooth to turn and feels a lot lighter, so I ended up ordering the 70-200 with 1.4x instead
Cant wait that new sony vs fuji video!! if there is lots of trees and sticks i use touch focus, aim that touch box to the target and then press pack button to real time tracking. and i use AF Subj. Shift Sensitivity "3"
My wildlife lens that cost me £35 is a Tair 3 300mm f3. 5. But an old Sigma DL 70 - 300 is not the worst either. The Canon version wont work on Canon 20D but the Nikon version on adapter does... All manual of course...
WOW. You just jumped to ULTIMATE wildlife lens EVER!! ...with clear image zoom too! You don't gotta buy into a new system... unless you want the ultra light canon RF 100-400 with 4k 60p on Canon R5 glory machine that is...
Man that lens compared to this lens is garbage! He can confidently sell the macro lens now as the GM has 0.36x magnification and is damn sharp! He better to buy teleconvertors for this new gem.
@@networm64 well, weight plays a factor too, if you leave your amazing lens at home it typically get's less image quality than the one you are willing to carry everyday. LOL That RF 100-400 is lighter than ALL of my lens, including primes, so it stays in my bag. I own lens a million times better than 100-400, but, they only come out for "special" purposes.
@@MikeMena I agree with you but I rather prefer a A6400 + 70-350mm. It gives you 6.3 in the end instead of 7.1-8 in the entire long focals of that RF lens. Want a light combo for the far reach? Apsc is the way to go or even micro 4/3.
@@networm64 I can see your point, however, don't forget to factor the crop into the f6.3. The equivalent aperture would be f6.3 x 1.5(Sony crop)= f9.45 (in both light capture and bokeh "look"). Using photo crop mode on R5 (which is still around 22mp large), there is no light loss, so in terms of light it is still f8. But it terms of bokeh it "looks" like f8 x 1.6(canon crop)=f12.8. The longest reach is 400mmx1.6=640mm. That is def long enough for me, and the whole kit is light enough already. And I already spent a billion dollars on my kit LOL I do want a Fuji someday tho.

Ohh I commented early, you got a beast of a lens there with electromagnetic rails for autofocus. It would simply be perfect. If you use catalyst browse than you get the smoothest image with the best autofocus in the biz.

My 200-600 weighs half a kilo. I think my back is safe lol. The footage you made is quite nice actually. Ideally it would be combined with close ups, but this is perfectly fine and relaxing/interesting.
My first camera was given to me. Nikon D300 with a 60mm D f2.8. I tried learning landscape with it because… Well, because I didn’t know. This reminds me of that 😁
Good++ video. I get some nice single frame videos with my 24-120mm f4. You don't need telephoto, you just have to befriend the animals and gain their acceptance. Also the audio on this video was not great, I don't know what exactly but it just sounded not right. I did like the subliminal sound track though. I followed you. I think that 100-400 is a good purchase too. It's a focal length I am currently considering, I just think 200-600 (when it becomes available) will be a better fit for me.
I’ve been using a a7siii with sigma 24-70 mostly. When I want to get some wild life I will use 1080 so I can use the 35 crop + x2 clear image zoom and then x1.1 for active stabilization to get closer. 70mm with that you can punch in to 212ish mm. I don’t get the compression, but I have managed to get some awesome shots of some deer and hawks.
That's a great idea. I'm using the a7iii and the sony GM 24-70 - so a similar sort of setup. I've been missing my old nikon 70-200 for the occasional amateurish wildlife shots, so using your hack for squeezing 212mm from 70mm will be something I'll try. My back and wallet both thank you :-)
If you're using an old 90mm medium format lens on a crop sensor camera, you're getting loads of magnification, without having to lug a huge telephoto lens. A 150 will still be very compact, while giving you even more magnification. Old medium format lenses are not that expensive, you can find them for 100-300 bucks. I recommend Mamiya 645 lenses, which are very compact and stunningly sharp.
Well we will see about the new lens. But I can't help but wonder why aren't you trying out vintage lenses with stabilised sensors? I mean with the Sony or the fuji you could easily end up with 400 or even 600mm (and for less than a kidney). The downside is that there aren't many zooms, mostly primes. But a cute little rat at 600 mm F1.4...you got the glory
@@zcabbott depends i. The type of subject you wanna capture. You could look what kind of focal length people tend to use for what you want to do. Personally I buys vintage lenses from kamerastore in Finland. If you shoot with an apsc you get the 1.5 crop so a 200mm becomes a 300mm. Just looked on there website and I found a Minolta 100mm to 300mm for 139€. Regarding primes I use a 135mm (200mm equivalent) canon fd f2. 5, most of the time I manage to get quite close of my subject. If you want to do video I would recommend using an XT4 and look for an adapter that let a vintage lens with stabilisation work. (vintage lenses from 2000s)
Yeah! If you want to fill your frame with your subject and Toneh out whatever environment is left then go to the zoo. Whether photo or video, let's put wildlife IN CONTEXT!
Just to let you know... male (father) foxes DO share in the care of fox kits along with the mother. One of the most fun subjects to photograph! ( i m o )
You should Brad Hill's blog about how his environmental portraits easily outsell his close ups of wildlife. Every Sony bird shooter that I see has a 100-400 GM lens. And they love it. Buy a strap that screws into the tripod collar screw on the lens so that the weight of the camera/lens is balanced on that and you are not lugging the system around by the camera body. By the way, My buddy and I have not had good luck with Black Rapid. Their lugs wear and cameras fall to the ground. Not impressive.
300mm should not even exist. It creates an aether imbalance causing trump heads to wobble. In other words 200mm is basically a 300mm lens without the price tag and weight or other problems. The increased distance gained by 300mm isn't worth it. Thanks for all the great work. We like watching your shows. :)
Never thought I will ask, but I need help... Sigma 24-70 or Sony 24-105??? I am happy to trade extra reach for BOKEH, but Sony has stabilization in it. How big is the difference, as Sony has IBIS already built in the camera body? Want it for normal video moves, not walking. HELP!!!

Some wild hair/head feathers on the 8-minute duck. Most of my wildlife videos are from my lanai. Mongoose, birds, chickens, crackheads, etc...

I tried the G9 with 100-400mm and it was very shaky, put me off Panasonic. Maybe my friend had a broken copy or something, but it was bad.
I have the panaleica 100-400 and the G9 and is really good and with the new updates is even better

The 100-400 Sony GM is my next lens. It's a beast. I have an A9 and a A7RIII and with the later one it will be amazing for some nice landscape shots.
200-600mm for me and birds right now. Can't afford that $17,000 prime stuff yet. You ended up paying as much for 100mm to 400mm as for 200 to 600mm. Your call but after 20 years of bird photography the bigger the better does the job.Similar quality with more versatility. Don't mess around with teleconverters on a zoom lens. They were designed originally for big primes and that is where they should stay.

I'm getting away with 24-240, works ok with crop mode + clear image zoom. Also I'm using a camcorder ax43 (about 24 - 500mm) for situations like a bison crossing the road, you pull over and pull out the camcorder and treat it like it's an iPhone. the ax43 always sits on my passenger seat. Plus the camcorder is 625g with everything included.
I swear by that 100-400 GM. Had it for a few years now, dropped it and paid Sony the premium to rebuild it. I also had the 200-600 briefly, but returned it. It just wasn't as sexy of a mistress as the GM is. The 1.4x TC is surprisingly sharp on it, too, though I'm a photography loser, so I don't know how well it'll do for video with the 1.4x.
Is it your first GM? I thought you had the 24 GM at one point. I seem to remember you running up and down a hallway testing it.

You could add a tracking circular window to the bird and increase the detail, exposure and the color luma value to make it stand out more.
Getting close to your subject is way more important for wildlife shooting than a long lens. A long lens photo from too far away still looks like crap. I actually like environmental wildlife images, but then you have to compose it as a landscape closeup with the animal as an accent.
Your Fuji footage is way better than the Sony. Had you gotten closer, even better. 300mm is like 450mm full frame, which is very useable. I love my T5 with the RF 100-500 and 1.4x extender. So, up to 700mm. And I still need to get closer.
Your 100-400 GM should be sweet. I look forward to your upcoming footage.
You done good. The joys of a long lens are not to be underestimated. 400mm is the outer limit of what you can easily hand hold. MF is essential skillz, man. Looking fwd to seeing results.

My a7r4 is amazing for wildlife photography, I use the 135mm 1.8 and just crop away.
If you’re in manual focus just back button focus instead of turning and turning the ring. It’ll get you close to your subject at the very least. That should work on any camera system.
A fabulous video, You have a brilliant lens there! I have used one for years and works great with a 1.4x Tele too, I do use a 600mm with a 2 x Tele as well a lot so 400mm might not be enough lol
Yes, great lens and still amazingly sharp with the 1.4 teleconverter. Easy to carry for hours using a side sling
The Sony 100-400mm GM is a brilliant lens imo
I think MFT will give you 2x boost by the sensor size, and the lenses are cheaper. Also IBIS will help too.

I have the 200-600 on the A7s3. That color depth with the long lens are killer. Definitely need a monopod though. Super heavy.
Been pretty happy with the Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG DN OS Contemporary Lens for Canon, is available for Sony as well.

I do bird photography. I have spots I can walk up the mountain and catch golden eagles flying up. . I hide behind a giant Boulder and they pass by at 30ft away.. I've misses incredible shots with the 100-400. ....50-200mm would be plenty.

Congratz! talking about smoothness, you should see how smooth the 70-200gm2 is, holding it with the 100-400 side by side, is night and day of a difference, the 70-200's zoom ring is super smooth to turn and feels a lot lighter, so I ended up ordering the 70-200 with 1.4x instead
That lens is the only reason I am considering getting into the sony ecosystem. Expecially for its close up capabilites.
Cant wait that new sony vs fuji video!! if there is lots of trees and sticks i use touch focus, aim that touch box to the target and then press pack button to real time tracking. and i use AF Subj. Shift Sensitivity "3"
My wildlife lens that cost me £35 is a Tair 3 300mm f3. 5. But an old Sigma DL 70 - 300 is not the worst either. The Canon version wont work on Canon 20D but the Nikon version on adapter does... All manual of course...

Man that lens compared to this lens is garbage! He can confidently sell the macro lens now as the GM has 0.36x magnification and is damn sharp! He better to buy teleconvertors for this new gem.
@@networm64 well, weight plays a factor too, if you leave your amazing lens at home it typically get's less image quality than the one you are willing to carry everyday. LOL
That RF 100-400 is lighter than ALL of my lens, including primes, so it stays in my bag. I own lens a million times better than 100-400, but, they only come out for "special" purposes.
@@MikeMena I agree with you but I rather prefer a A6400 + 70-350mm. It gives you 6.3 in the end instead of 7.1-8 in the entire long focals of that RF lens. Want a light combo for the far reach? Apsc is the way to go or even micro 4/3.
@@networm64 I can see your point, however, don't forget to factor the crop into the f6.3. The equivalent aperture would be f6.3 x 1.5(Sony crop)= f9.45 (in both light capture and bokeh "look").
Using photo crop mode on R5 (which is still around 22mp large), there is no light loss, so in terms of light it is still f8. But it terms of bokeh it "looks" like f8 x 1.6(canon crop)=f12.8. The longest reach is 400mmx1.6=640mm. That is def long enough for me, and the whole kit is light enough already. And I already spent a billion dollars on my kit LOL I do want a Fuji someday tho.

Ohh I commented early, you got a beast of a lens there with electromagnetic rails for autofocus. It would simply be perfect. If you use catalyst browse than you get the smoothest image with the best autofocus in the biz.
See if you can get a used extender like a 1.5x or 2x will give you more. I dont know if Sony has those but Canon does.
With everything you've just said, you should be getting an Olympus 75mm f/1.8- bonus, great for eye-only vlogging (with a selphie stick).

I use my 24mm prime and zoom with my feet.
My 200-600 weighs half a kilo. I think my back is safe lol. The footage you made is quite nice actually. Ideally it would be combined with close ups, but this is perfectly fine and relaxing/interesting.

90mm is enough but you need to hit record and then cinematically throw your camera at the wildlife.
Good++ video. I get some nice single frame videos with my 24-120mm f4. You don't need telephoto, you just have to befriend the animals and gain their acceptance. Also the audio on this video was not great, I don't know what exactly but it just sounded not right. I did like the subliminal sound track though. I followed you. I think that 100-400 is a good purchase too. It's a focal length I am currently considering, I just think 200-600 (when it becomes available) will be a better fit for me.

I’ve been using a a7siii with sigma 24-70 mostly. When I want to get some wild life I will use 1080 so I can use the 35 crop + x2 clear image zoom and then x1.1 for active stabilization to get closer. 70mm with that you can punch in to 212ish mm. I don’t get the compression, but I have managed to get some awesome shots of some deer and hawks.
That's a great idea. I'm using the a7iii and the sony GM 24-70 - so a similar sort of setup. I've been missing my old nikon 70-200 for the occasional amateurish wildlife shots, so using your hack for squeezing 212mm from 70mm will be something I'll try. My back and wallet both thank you :-)
If you're using an old 90mm medium format lens on a crop sensor camera, you're getting loads of magnification, without having to lug a huge telephoto lens. A 150 will still be very compact, while giving you even more magnification. Old medium format lenses are not that expensive, you can find them for 100-300 bucks. I recommend Mamiya 645 lenses, which are very compact and stunningly sharp.
Well we will see about the new lens. But I can't help but wonder why aren't you trying out vintage lenses with stabilised sensors? I mean with the Sony or the fuji you could easily end up with 400 or even 600mm (and for less than a kidney). The downside is that there aren't many zooms, mostly primes. But a cute little rat at 600 mm F1.4...you got the glory

@@zcabbott depends i. The type of subject you wanna capture. You could look what kind of focal length people tend to use for what you want to do. Personally I buys vintage lenses from kamerastore in Finland. If you shoot with an apsc you get the 1.5 crop so a 200mm becomes a 300mm. Just looked on there website and I found a Minolta 100mm to 300mm for 139€. Regarding primes I use a 135mm (200mm equivalent) canon fd f2. 5, most of the time I manage to get quite close of my subject. If you want to do video I would recommend using an XT4 and look for an adapter that let a vintage lens with stabilisation work. (vintage lenses from 2000s)

You should Brad Hill's blog about how his environmental portraits easily outsell his close ups of wildlife. Every Sony bird shooter that I see has a 100-400 GM lens. And they love it. Buy a strap that screws into the tripod collar screw on the lens so that the weight of the camera/lens is balanced on that and you are not lugging the system around by the camera body. By the way, My buddy and I have not had good luck with Black Rapid. Their lugs wear and cameras fall to the ground. Not impressive.
300mm should not even exist. It creates an aether imbalance causing trump heads to wobble.
In other words 200mm is basically a 300mm lens without the price tag and weight or other problems. The increased distance gained by 300mm isn't worth it.

Provided you can get close enough, a GoPro is prefectly adequate for wildlife ;-)

Never thought I will ask, but I need help... Sigma 24-70 or Sony 24-105??? I am happy to trade extra reach for BOKEH, but Sony has stabilization in it. How big is the difference, as Sony has IBIS already built in the camera body? Want it for normal video moves, not walking. HELP!!!
