Something I think they've both failed to mention is that because Liverpool will finish in the top 2, that gives them the advantage of ALL second legs at home, right up to the semis, should they go that far. That's huge.... and a good incentive to finish in the top 2 meaning they will get rewarded in some way.
That was a ridiculous argument wasn't it. Salzburg vs Bologna in the final would absolute cinema. Imagine how good of a season that would be, if these two teams end up as finalists.
Even in the old format big teams would finish 2nd, meaning another team who topped their group had to play a favourite in the last 16. Doing well in the CL groups and getting a difficult draw in the last 16 happens every year and is not unique to this new format.
The thing Andy is forgetting here is that, on recent form, Real Madrid etc probably wouldn't have topped their group in the previous format, meaning Liverpool could still have drawn them next🤷♂️
Goldstein sounding like a typical united fan. Doesnt care about smaller teams at all and doesnt show them any respect. At the end of the day it doesnt mayter who is in the final , its almost always a good game. As a Liverpool fan, we were nowhere near good enough to go for the champions league in 05' but we managed to win it in spectacular fashion, if any other team took our place in that final it would be nowhere near as memorable or iconic. The teams that make it to the final deserve it no matter the size.
If only there was a system that would allocate points that would fairly reflect performances and results and then put them in let’s say a league table. And then depending on how well you do will be where you finish. But now that I’m thinking about it, how could that possibly be fair !!
This is one of the stupidest arguments I've ever heard. They aren't just getting real Madrid, they're getting the worst performed team in the knockouts. Normally it's Celtic or Lyon.
@@eddieherrera5314 id still fancy lpool this season over them..i get what happened in ties under klopp..however i also remember lpool hammering madrid in 2009 in knockouts and at the minute (this season) i think lpool will beat them.
Liverpool fan here. NOT a flaw. It's no different than the group stages. Fact is Real Madrid could have a mare and finish as the worst team that qualifies and still face a top team. Real Madrid could finish second in the old format and still have to face Liverpool.
As for Liverpool leaving big guns at home, absolutely correct!! Got a tough game at weekend and last thing we want is to unnecessarily risk an injury, or tire out any player when we don't need to.. I reckon Arsenal will do the same to a slightly lesser extent with Citeh at the weekend.. City will have to won so need to be strong tonight.. shame really, cos I'd like City to rest players so they could whoop Arsenal at the weekend.. That is guaranteed a match for betting on yellow cards, amd a red card.. gonna be match of the weekend
its not about being fair, its about being the best regardless of what team you face you gotta beat em.. seeding is bs as long as you win ya got nothing to worry about.
Real Madrid put themsleves in this position because they weren't playing well enough. Regardless of their form now, if they come up in Liverpool's path, I'm sure Slot will be prepared as he has for all the other games so far. To make a big issue out of it purely because Klopp had trouble with Real is disrespectful to Slot and the current team.
Real Madrid might not make the last 16. I think Slot has made the right decision. They’ve also got to fit in Everton and Spurs in between premier league fixtures.
I quite like the first stage of this new format.. but I would then have randomly picked 2 teams from 1-8 and 2 teams from 9-16 and again draw lots to see who faces who, creating 4 x groups of 4, home and away games as in previous format and top 2 in each group go through to a knockout quarterfinal round…. I can’t see the reasoning for teams placed 17-24 being rewarded with a lifeline, they earn a second chance without merit… Otherwise, as I have said, the first stage is pretty awesome because of the unpredictability , randomness and gives more teams an opportunity.. but as can be seen, if the lesser favoured teams exceed expectations, then the more favoured teams, having failed expectations, get another opportunity to progress in the competition, as well as perhaps knocking out a team who had done really well and finished way above… for example if Real finished 24th and played and Young Boys had finished 9th
Andy it's a meritocracy you dope. What you are suggesting is the European super league where the biggest teams play each other regardless of performance, just for the spectacle
This could have happened regardless with the old format. Liverpool could finish top of group and 'big hitter' finish 2nd, there's the same scenario in the last 16... Goldstein follow football? 😂
I'm a Liverpool fan and I hate this league format, I'm not someone who cares who we face as i believe my club at it's best can beat anyone, winning a league and your only reward is possibly playing smaller clubs devalues the competition. Winning the league should automatically seed you in the quarter final or the winner of the league should get some kind of prize, like a 2st 2nd 3rd medal for those who've finished in the top 3 of a league that contains all the best clubs in! Just my opinion. I personally think the competition has lost its edge, comes to something when a club can rest key players in the CL! And he's right, we dont want small clubs in the final, look what happened when Spurs met Liverpool in the final, it was one of the most boring finals the CL had ever witnessed!
Yes yes infact why don't you just knock out the team that finishes top of the groups from next time instead. Deluded people run the radios and tele channels, no wonder their numbers are so dead.
How do these guys not know the rules of the competition? Did I hear them say they can’t play city? There is no restrictions on playing someone from the same country.
I with bent on this one. Why’s it matter if they get a big team? If Madrid finished third in the group old format they might play Liverpool anyway makes no difference. Plus if you go out in the final or last 16 you come out with the same result, you’ve won nothing
Spot on Benty this gives the little clubs a much better chance of getting to finals Imagine champions league being won by Brest. Im a Liverpool fan and would prefer to see that than Dubai City or Real Madrid winning it!
Assuming top 16 get through, it makes sense that 1 plays 16, 2 plays 15. UEFA just added some randomness by saying we will have a draw 1 plays 15 or 16. Taking a step further 9-16 play 17-24. Which means 16 plays 17, 15 plays 18 etc... Andy's argument is ridiculous. Point is Real Madrid, Bayern Munich or Juventus have not got enough points to qualify in a better slot. Liverpool is still playing the 15th/16th placed team...it could be Real or Brugge. You can't make a draw based on reputation. This format is fair and may the best team in the world win its 7th title.
The format is a joke. Liverpool and Barca will finish #1 and #2 and get rewarded with playing Real and Bayern perhaps in the R16. There should be reseeding for the entire bracket. Highest club always plays lowest club, etc. Otherwise whats the point of a longer league phase now.
Classic ‘don’t fully understand the subject’ chat. The league phase is designed to have weight later to increase importance. It would be unlucky to draw Madrid as 1st seed in RD16.
So if Liverpool finish top and play the winner of 16th vs 17th in the playoff, that could also equate to playing Brest Vs Celtic etc as that table will change. Not sure how this is a talking point unless it actually happens that Liverpool get a potential big team etc
Why is the FA cup called the best cup in the world 🤔 Because your reputation means nothing. Small teams can kick out big teams at any stage. Stop sanitising the champions league by gearing it for only big teams to succeed. We're tired of seeing Real Madrid in every final.
It’s knockout football, that’s like seeding the FA cup so all the big teams get through, where’s the fun in that?, you get who you get so deal with it!!
