This is beautiful but fills me with such sadness in a way I can't quite explain. It's not even cathartic, it's just like a heartache that you have to sit with until it goes away
Me too. My boss walked into my office one day and caught me just crying and it was because of this song. I don't associate it with anyone or anything specific; it really just rattles something really deep within me.
This summer, I met a guy and we became buddies. And then a storm kicked in. He told me all of the sudden that he was very depressed, and I tried to help, of course. He's still depressed, and I'm still trying. But I'm his only friend and I'm the only one who knows about all his troubles. We don't live in the same city, so I don't know what I can do and I have my own problems. All of this became really toxic, and it's too much for me, and there's really nothing I can do. It makes me very anxious. But this song helps me dealing with my emotions. The lyrics are extremely relatable. Thanks, The National.
You will never be able to help him. At least not the way you want to. And you already did all you can do. Carrying on your sholders other peoples pain can make yourself depressed and anxious, and now you cant even deal with yourself, let alone with someone else. Its been a year, so i hope he is ok and you are out of that situation, and living your life to the fullest. Take care.
When I went to Boston calling last year the national started playing during sunset, it was a beautiful flawless day around 80 degrees. i won the tickets and brought someone with me. I had told them I really only wanted to see the national and the killers.. show ment alot to me. Figures 15 minutes into the nationals performance the girl wants her jacket that's 20 min walk away. I was having one of those moments where between the beautiful sunset and show and his voice, one of those moments I'll never forget. And i cut it so short to go get this girls jacket. Dont be that girl, ladies. We will never forget it
Beautiful song. About saying goodbye when you arent being recognized. Imagination is a gorgeous thing but at some point you have to cut your losses. If you truehearted you usually cut it too late & there is no going back. Here's raising a Pink Rabbit to You, May the Next on Be Better.
Nothing the doors couldn't have done apart from having twice the, three, five times talent.Don't get me wrong,I am currently addicted to the National.Thanx Glastonbury.
In this world, it's just us You know it's not the same as it was In this world, it's just us You know it's not the same as it was As it was, as it was You know it's not the same
Also, "when the sound kicks out" not the sun. This is debatable but is strongly feel it's "sound" (example "we hold ourselves together with our arms around the stereo" - apartment song) (example- " Bona Drag was still on") I know it's LA, but it's the sound (music) that's distracting him, not the sun.
Let's have a drink,go out on the lash, Don't worry about nothing, I got some cash. We'll go on till we drop, In an open shop, We aint gonna crack, I got your back Don't go back o to the darkness, I feel your every move I hoped it would be faultless, How wrong I've been proved.
some of the lyrics aren't right, here are the corrections: 1:05 "you were STARING down the street, 'cause you were trying not to crack up" 1:20 "i love a storm, but i don't love lightning/all the waters coming up, so fast IT'S FRIGHTENING." 1:47 "i was STARING down the street, 'cause i was trying not to crack" 3:05 "you were STARING down the street, 'cause you were trying not to crack up" 3:10 "Bona Drag WAS still on" 3:15 "now i only think about Los Angeles when the SOUND kicks out" (repeat for all) 3:40 "A needle in the dark" (only the last refrain says "the needle") bonus: "Bona Drag" is a 1990 compilation album by Morrisey; the title means "Nice outfit" in the Polari slang language.
Many words in this lyric video are wrong, but to be fair it’s hard to find a reliable source for 100% accurate lyrics to any song. Unless it’s straight from the author’s mouth 😅
There are always disputes as to the lyrics of this song. I also hear "I was coming back from what seemed like a ruse" instead of ruin. Turn volume way up and you can hear a "s" sound not an "n" It also kinda makes more sense in the way he says he was solid gold, in the fight. Like he was finally over her but it was a ruse in the end cuz she just came back into his life suddenly and now hes back to square one.
Are the lyrics not: You said it would be painless The needle in the DOLL (like a voodoo doll. "This backstab won't hurt. I'll leave quietly in the night.") You said it would be painless It wasn't that at all ???
I love that line: 'I was a white girl in a crowd of white girls in the park'. This takes me back to 2003-2004, bear with me. I was 13-14 then. That's a beautiful, heartbeaking image. Imagine you, with your friends, breaking down from someone who has broken your heart but going along with it with your friends; not noticeable to a passer-by. A white girl in a crowd of white girls in the park Brilliant.
No I'm not an idiot nor you. You must get it or you wouldn't be listening to this. I DO think I've been somewhere similar though. I bet you have? All the best.
The lyrics are a little wrong, I believe. They make more sense to me as: All the water’s coming up so fast, it’s frightening (Rhymes better and fits the context better.) You said it would be painless... the needle in the doll (reference to a voodoo doll of himself, as an analogy for claiming a breakup won’t hurt, and “doll” rhymes better with the next line.)
I had the same thing happen to me.. I held a candle for so long and eventually you just have to say No Thank You There Will Be Some One Better For Me. For You Too.
This song puts me on the verge of tears every. single. time.
“I didn’t ask for pain, it just came over me” was the part in this song that I related to the most. A work of art ; )
Me too😞
Yeah.
You did nail that one.
One of the best pieces of music ever recorded. Ever.
I don’t understand how this song is THIS good.
The drumming is a master class.
"You didn't see me I was falling apart..."
This is beautiful but fills me with such sadness in a way I can't quite explain. It's not even cathartic, it's just like a heartache that you have to sit with until it goes away

But it never goes away.
It never goes away.. that's the thing.

''A television version of a person with a broken heart...''
She never knew how much I fell apart.
They are great songwriters❤️❤️
The Best songwriters ❣️❣️❣️
I heard them yesterday for the first time.. What a f******* good band! I love their sound and his voice. Perfect!
I love them so so much. Definitely one of their best tracks.
When sadness is beauty.

This song..forever!
best band.
In my 20 years of life this is the only song I had multiple dreams with.

I couldn't find quiet
I went out in the rain
I was just soakin' my head to unrattle my brain
Somebody said you disappeared in a crowd
I didn't understand then
I don't understand now
Am I the one you think about when you're
Sitting in your faintin' chair drinking pink rabbits?
Am I the one you think about when you're
Sitting in your faintin' chair drinking pink rabbits?
And everybody was gone
You were standin' in the street 'cause you were tryin' not to crack up
It wasn't like a rain it was more like a sea
I didn't ask for this pain it just came over me
I love a storm, but I don't love lightning
All the waters coming up so fast, that's right
Am I the one you think about when you're
Sitting in your faintin' chair drinking pink rabbits?
Am I the one you think about when you're
Sitting in your faintin' chair drinking pink rabbits?
And everybody was gone
I was standing in the street 'cause I was trying not to crack
I was solid gold
I was in the fight
I was coming back from what seemed like a ruin
I couldn't see you coming so far
I just turn around and there you are
I'm so surprised you want to dance with me now
I was just getting used to living life without you around
I'm so surprised you want to dance with me now
You always said I held you way too high off the ground
You didn't see me I was falling apart
I was a white girl in a crowd of white girls in the park
You didn't see me I was falling apart
I was a television version of a person with a broken heart
You didn't see me I was falling apart
I was a white girl in a crowd of white girls in a park
You didn't see me I was falling apart
I was a television version of a person with a broken heart
And everybody was gone
You were standin' in the street
Cause you were trying not to crack up
Now I only think about los angeles when the sun kicks out
Now I only think about los angeles when the sun kicks out
You said it would be painless
The needle in the dark
You said it would be painless
It wasn't that at all
You said it would be painless
The needle in the dark
You said it would be painless
It wasn't that at all (when the sun kicks out)
You said it would be painless
The needle in the dark (when the sun kicks out)
You said it would be painless
It wasn't that at all

"it's frightening" not "that's right"
Keith Hinchcliffe That's right. Thanks. :)
I appreciate your excusing my impertinence. Cheers.

When the sound kicks out, not sun kicks out.
at 1:23, I think the lyrics are 'it's frightening', not 'that's right'. Thanks for uploading the video though, love it.
You could interpret this in loads of ways but it sounds like a rattling song to me.Tears at 4a.m.
S.D. lol, now you are using urban slang! There's tons of Urban slang in Pink Rabbits.
Nothing. tops. this. song.
I was solid gold I was in the fight
WOW...
This line reminds me of giving everything you have to a relationship just to have the other person shrug and toss it away.
Should be "All the waters coming up, so fast, its frightening"
Thanks for uploading this is beautifull,....
the lyrics. i’m dying.
This band, blow any other of sort totally away. This is the fifth time I've tried to get this correct, your tub.
i think it is a crazy way to explain with that music 😍😍😍
Where is this Park ?
BRILLIANT!
Now,I only fink about Los Angeles when I laugh and am sick.
There are always disputes as to the lyrics of this song.

You said it would be painless
The needle in the dark
You said it would be painless
It wasn't that at all
She loved this song
A great song !
it's "the water's coming up so fast it's frightening, not 'that's right'
sorry to be a pedant :P thanks for uploading
What part of the song attach the second when that song plays so I can listen for myself.
But all the wine belongs to me.
Are the lyrics not:
You said it would be painless
The needle in the DOLL (like a voodoo doll. "This backstab won't hurt. I'll leave quietly in the night.")
You said it would be painless
It wasn't that at all
???

Brilliant.
white girl is slang for H
C.Carpenter. You seem to have a 'fascination' with H. I was right all along. Years of fears come out with the tears,at 4am.. I'm dying.
It's my favorite too
say you won't let go
Saw the national twice last year only disappointing thing that happened wasn't they didn't sing pink rabbits ....but everything else made up for it
Transcription is messed up
Number 3 on the funeral chart.
Coming back from a ruin but sounds like a ruse ?
Number 3 is slang for H, he may have been coming back from clean time (from an O.D.) and having a relapse.
lol "funeral chart", clever Stephen Dawe :)
No I'm not an idiot nor you. You must get it or you wouldn't be listening to this. I DO think I've been somewhere similar though. I bet you have? All the best.
@@stephendawe1079 yes
Christmas carpenter.(clever). Just go and have a hit now. Hit begins with H.. Slang for 3.
"You said it would be painless, I need to lick a dog"
you ass, now that's all I hear
when the sound kicks out
Almost perfect lyrics,well written.
Thought I'd listened to all of the nationals this one sneaked on me
I think this will be played a lot over the next week or so... Merry Xmas. Haha!
Turn Bona Drag off and put Strangeways on instead...
The lyrics are a little wrong, I believe. They make more sense to me as:
All the water’s coming up so fast, it’s frightening
(Rhymes better and fits the context better.)
You said it would be painless... the needle in the doll

Bona drag good choice

YEP :) when the sun kicks out
I wanna drink with this guy, tell him it'll be alright mate!
ethereal
I didn't ask for this faith it just came over me
Tom Waits inspired, surely, with a smooth voice.
Sitting in your fading chair...
Now I only think about Los Angeles, When the sun kicks out...
When you listen very carefully you notice he says "coming back from a ruse" not "ruin".
Its ruin.
That makes more sense
It's "The needle in the doll" not "dark"
Yes, he's talking about voodoo
I think a needle in the dark would still hurt like hell
@@ChiggyChiggyChiggy you could put an eye out like that.
Damn, i was thinking "the needle in the dark" he was using heroine.
sounds very Isaac brock
I was just getting used to life without you around...
"The waters coming up so fast, it's frightening" (not "so fast, that's right"). Not trying to be difficult. It's just better as written.
you didn't see me...never painless
I never think about Los Angeles, East coast girl
I fell apart!
The waters coming up so fast it's frightening..not 'that's right'
get out of my head.
I was a white girl in a crowd of white girls in a park~
The question is: What is a Pink rabbit ?
Something that doesn't exist, but that you wish it did!!
It's a cocktail that's named pink rabbit because it has Nestle quik strawberry milk mix in it.
*sigh* to Anna
pink floyd + white rabbit = pink rabbit
Why pink rabbits?
Sara B It is the name of a drink that Matt invented. He says it's made from tequila, nestle strawberry milk and kahlua.
ill have to try that
I would have a good bourbon cut or chased with club soda
I'm in a rush, absolutely no time to comment sorry....

8 or more years of been stalked. What a waste of life. So much suffering.
Gege Andersen Sorry what? What do you mean if I may ask?

This entire song could be about clean time then relapse, accidental O.D. It wasn't H. at all . Too much cut, fentanyl.
however I really doubt it :) this song is full of urban slang
Christmas you are so far off....oh wait that's me
