Attempted murder right there. If there is any justice this fucker is going to jail for a long time. Sorry this happened to you mate, and I wish you the speediest recovery.
Josh Whalen "I accidently swerved over the lane a bit while not paying full attention to the road, and because I was playing music loudly I unfortunately didn't hear when I hit the cyclist." Pow. Because even if you're a great driver you can make mistakes (though, not necessarily this badly). It's fairly irrelevant, anyway, because the driver did stop.
ZeD It's not irrelevant because the driver "did stop;" he could have done it intentionally, then come back to save face, especially if he noticed the mounted camera as he approached the biker.
ZeD Description has been changed by video poster to indicate the driver did NOT stop. It needs to be remembered that when driving we are in charge of 4,000lbs of heavy machinery that can kill. If in-car distractions get in the way of that we should not be driving.
News story says only the mirror clipped you and the "driver did not know" it had happened. From the looks of it if that's true he was either asleep and veering off to the side or just lying and trying to cover his ass. What a tool. It really does look deliberate. Hope you fully recover and this muppet gets what's coming to him.
This was posted on FB. I could barely stand to watch it and hear you in so much pain not knowing what your injuries were and probably wondering if you were going to make it. My heart broke for you in that video. Here's to your speedy and full recovery. So happy you made it through this ordeal and are still with us.
I am from Jacksonville and travel this route nearly every day. Cyclists are very well known in this area (time trials, etc.) and all local drivers are aware of that. Even the driver in this video; this is his hometown. I am so sorry you had to experience such a scary accident, but thank the Lord you are on the path to recovery. My fiancé is a triathlete and also rides on these roads. It really hit home when I saw your video and my heart broke for you.
This is the story from the local paper that may help with some details. I need to make it clear the driver did stop. Thank you to everyone for your support. I was released from the hospital Thursday after 4 days. I will recover, but it will take a while. www.tylerpaper.com/TP-News+Local/202440/bicyclist-recovering-from-injuries-suffered-in-monday-morning-bullard-accident#.U8kSMBko7qC
So the driver didn't see anyone on a bike, which he swerved at, and then didn't realize he hit anyone, but saw someone on the road in his rear-view mirror. I suspect his phone records will explain some of those statements; if not, then he needs a permanent license ban because that leaves either malice or mental deficiency as causes: In either case, he should NOT be driving on public roads. If it's "just" carelessness, I hope he'll lose his license for a few years. Here in NZ we have a statutory offence of "careless driving causing injury". Aside from a fine (up to $4500, which is common) and possible jail time (up to three months, which is rare), it carries a mandatory loss of license for AT LEAST six months.
Glad to hear you're on the road to recovery, and not letting it keep you out of the saddle. Pleasantly surprised to see the driver stopped. A part of me wonders if it was his conscience saying 'that was a serious crime' that did it though.
“We don’t know how close to the line the cyclist was traveling” - Nice VICTIM BLAMING by the police. Maybe they should investigate the possibility that the crash was caused by the pickup truck being on the WRONG SIDE OF THE LINE while the driver claims he DIDN'T SEE A CYCLIST and DIDN'T KNOW HE HIT ANYONE. Police go on to say: “But I must make it clear that the bike was not struck, it was the vehicle’s mirror that struck the cyclist.” - Oh, well I guess that makes it ok??? It's not like the truck hit the bike, just the guy riding it.
Speedy recovery, hope youre back on the bike soon. Looking forward to the day our cameras will transmit to the inside of our sunglasses like a HUD - heads up display or similar.
Wow. Really sorry to see this and I hope you're healing well. I know from first hand experience the pain you're going through but hang in there. All of us would appreciate an update on how you're doing and what happened with the driver that hit you
I can't believe this. I can't believe he didn't stop. What does that say about our society. Thank you for sharing and I hope that this will open up peoples eyes. Glad you are ok! Brutal to watch.
This is my worst nightmare... Glad to see in other comments you'll be in the saddle again. Hope you have a speedy recovery! edited - comments answered my question...
Hay so i slowed down the video in iMovie and i took a look at the rear license plate and it looks like the first four characters are 59HC or 69HC. However by the looks of the first license plate, the first character is 5, but the others arent recognizable. please like this so he can see it
Attempted murder by the driver and disgusting apathy from everyone else that drove past before the kind man stopped to help you. I hope the person responsible is brought to swift and tough justice and that the drivers who passed you have the opportunity to view this video and think very hard about their place in this world if they can treat another human the way they treated you.
nobody stopped for ages???? Several vehicles drove past you and never even bothered... :( and even after someone was attending you, no one else bothered to stop either...
That seemed deliberate. Im glad you're alive. Sickens me that people like that exist. I avoid riding in roads after having a near collision with a careless driver.
That mangled license plate makes me think this driver relishes hitting animals, and people, on the road. Hope they get him off the road for good and that you recover fully.
macnkat mcfie He probably sighted the camera(s). Same thing happened to me; someone backed into my car, denting my passenger door significantly, but came to notify me (10 minutes AFTER I saw him entering his car) clearly because there was a security camera pointed directly upon my car.
Man, that shakes me up. Could have been any one of us. Automobiles are dangerous and they are not given the respect they deserve anymore. The best way to become a better driver is to become a biker to see both sides of the coin. I hope you heal quickly and get back on that bike.
Those stupid bikes ride so low it can be hard to see them in a truck. Also, the bicyclist could have rode a little closer to the wall instead of right on the line. Sun could have been in the truck drivers eyes as well. Definitely an accident.
I wear a Neon reflective vest when riding on roads like this. Also, stay away from that line, when you have the room to. A few debris punctures from riding further over is worth it for this not to happen. NOT your fault, obviously, but take all the precautions you can, and ride like NOBODY can see you. Consider every driver to be a moron, and a threat, because that is the case more often than not, as we see here.
macnkat mcfie- I'd hope that "careless driving" makes the list of charges... He didn't see you, didn't know he hit you... Sounds like a pretty clear admission of "careless driving". Hopefully there are appropriate charges in Texas that will cost him his license for a while.
privatewayfarer- Police should also check his vision... Bright sunny day, clear line of sight, and the driver says he didn't see anyone on a bike? Do they let blind people drive in Texas?
privatewayfarer I believe that is standard practice now, however he could have been checking email, weather or any number of things that don't record an obvious time stamp.
All I'm trying to say is that the guy driving this truck is one of the nicest guys you would ever meet and he would never do anything like this on purpose.
I got a helmet cam but batt life is short and it faces wrong direction. Need a low power rear facing loop cam which operates continuously. Gotta find one. Most drivers here are very considerate of cyclists, with the occasional jackass. It only takes one.
Dan Mick this does illustrate the conversation we had when I was in LA, during which you told me about how some drivers are complete assholes when it comes to cyclists. The most appalling thing in the clip is that one can clearly see how the driver gets out of his way just to hit the cyclist. I hope it's possible to get a clean shot of the license plate id and that legal action hits that idiot's head with the mighty force of an angry god.
Joao Eduardo Luis It's just hard to imagine somebody doing that on purpose. But it is hard for a rhino to imagine rifle in a helecopter. I live in a low rage country (JP). When they blow a fuse tho, they do it well. I've been pushed off into construction ruff by a truck, which i slapped to get its attention. It ran red lights and stopped diagonally in an intersection to get me. That was on a motorcycle, not a bicycle. The driver got back in his truck when he saw i was a non-sheep foreigner who was about to tear off his head and shit down his neck. I only cycle now. Most drivers are very considerate here. Everybody here rode bicycles at the very least when they were in highshool. The other day somebody did a number almost exactly like the vid, but thankfully missed me. Distracted mom with infant in passenger seat.
I've reviewed my post a few times, and am having a hard time finding fault with it. I cycle a lot but in Japan. From what i see, there are distracted drivers, hurried drivers, and assholes. Distracted = jerkoff w/cellphone, or lady with kid in front seat. Dunno how my perspective helps, but maybe. Godsdamnit. This just doesn't add up, and it isn't funny.
You can catch part of the front plate. You might be able to get a couple more letters out of it with the original version with no compression artifacts. I hope you find the person responsible.
Or eating a sandwich, or on the phone, or swatting at a bee. It's always something - and vehicles leaving their assigned lane without warning or the concious effort of the driver is a universal constant.
Cycle cameras are a game changer. As it may not prove the intent of the motorist, it still does a hellova lot to prove culpability and provide a civil case with ample evidence to prosecute for damages. DRIVERS: Beware. You can and will be held to account for this kind of reckless driving. Cameras are becoming smaller and smaller by the year, and when you lose your license or are made poor by the choices you make, someday you may be forced to see life from the perspective of a vulnerable road user.
For me, the worst part of this video is not the single persons terrible actions and hitting the cyclist, but the dozens of people that drive right by after he already hit to the ground. Society is loosing touch...
Oh man...I really feel for you. Road rash is NOT fun, and that was one of the minor injuries?! What an absolutely callous human being. I would advise you to disallow comment for this video....people tend to be hateful, and there seems to be no helpful/interesting and informed discussion on bike/road law going on. I hope you keep on biking and are feeling better. Yay to biking for exercise, convenience, money saving and environmental health. x
If you know there's debris that could flatten a tire and ruin your bike, why ride there and risk it? Why record a bike ride and move as close to the white line as possible (probably dodging debris)? What seems like a truck swerving far into the shoulder, is more than likely his wheels just driving on the white line. But I'm assuming all of us on this thread are perfect drivers and have never swerved into the shoulder on accident.
I am so glad people stopped to help. That is awful and I'm sorry it happened to you. I hope you heal soon and I'm sorry there has been so much callous bullshit victim-blaming commentary. I hope you heal soon and well.
I know the driver of the truck, he is a good man that feels terrible about this accident. He would never intentionally hurt anyone and holds no ill feelings about bike riders. This was just a terrible accident. Has no one else ever crossed the white line before? For you guys that are trying to find the license number, the bicyclist stated several times that the driver stopped to render aid. You can't just turn around on this bridge, he had to stop and come back on foot to help. I hope the cyclist has a speedy recovery and I am so glad he wasn't killed in this terrible accident, I know my friend feels the same way.
Please respond to this question and nothing more: Why were you riding so close to a travel lane when you could have been about 4 ft closer to the side of the road? I don't care what your intentions were, or whatever, just give me a straight answer on this question. I guarantee you don't.
Why intentionally hit a bike? Are they mad that someone isn't in a car? I can't comprehend where the anger would come from....Can someone please explain exactly why another person would be upset enough about a bicycle to purposely hit them with a vehicle? EDIT: The reddit link that sent me here said "Cyclist appears to be deliberately hit by a passing vehicle (x-post /r/bicycling)" which is why I am assuming they were intentionally hit. So, it is possibly just some person on reddit passing on his assumption, I don't know.
Ok.... the truck did cross the white line. But why in the hell was the bicyclist riding so close to white line? If you feel you need the ride on an express way ride as close to the wall as possible
Because the far side of the road is covered in tiny debris that will cause a flat every mile. Besides, how far from the lanes do we need to be? Obviously the lane for cars isn't wide enough as it is.
Well I guess if you can't ride to the far right of the white I wouldn't ride on a freeway. Obviously it's not safe. People read, text and some times sleep while going 70+mph. Ride safe
THETOPGLOCK Maybe if he had a gun he could have protected himself. The only thing that stops a truck swerving into the bike lane and hitting someone is a cyclist with a gun.
I hope the police are taking this VERY seriously. Once they come up with a list of possible matches (should only take a few minutes) they can positively identify the "custom modifications" to that plate and identify a vehicle, then a driver. Driver needs to be locked in a cage for a few years, and PERMANENTLY lose his/her license. Even though "59HC" is more clearly readable from the rear plate (after the bike spins around) it's still good that there was a front plate. In some states, there's no such thing as a "front plate". Makes me glad I don't live in NC, any more.
While the level of proof required for criminal charges is apparently higher than even this evidence provides, it should suffice for a law suit. Whether or not there was criminal intent, the driver of the truck is financially responsible for injuries and damages they caused through obviously negligent driving.
I'm finding out most people don't carry enough insurance to even begin to keep up with today's medical costs. Thankfully it was more than the minimum required by law...because that is so low as to be ridiculous. And getting into someones pockets is sometimes more cost than what you might recoup. Pretty much the system sucks.
ZoomZip It's not illegal. The police were called, and the driver was ticketed, not the cyclist. Also, learn to distinguish between an interstate and other roads. Also, people don't drive bikes. Also, your handle is annoying. Also, shut up.
Dude prolly fell asleep at the wheel, looking at his hair in the mirror, or was texting. See it all the time, one reason imma never ride a bike on a busy road like that. Hope you get better man
That's bad. The road is empty, the driver is clearly over the line, there's no reason to hit you, there's no way you could have spotted and avoided the hit, the driver must have noticed, they didn't stop, they have a mangled number-plate which is bound to be illegal and also (per Anna) suggests they've hit stuff before and that this is not just a once-off case of distraction.
That video is definitely difficult to watch. I am glad you are on the road to recovery. You should contact a personal injury lawyer as soon as possible to help you recover enough money to cover all of these medical bills you are racking up. Insurance companies can be dodgy and love finding loopholes to get themselves out of paying for damages their client's cause.
Do get a Lawyer, do SUE his ass off. The guy that hit you don't deserve to have a license and should have to walk to work for a year or two. If for some reason he can prove it was not intentional, then he should be sued for pure NEGLIGENCE and disregard for life. People need to take responsibility for their actions. If he is man enough to try to kill someone with a 5000 pound projectile then he needs to suffer the full consequences.
Wether he was on a highway or not, that doesn't give any driver the right to hit anyone. Every driver should be aware that they drive a vehicle big enough to kill someone. Yes he was on a highway, but the driver could have paid more attention to the road. That's assuming he didn't do it on purpose.
What a sadistic deranged son of a bitch. My grandfather was killed this exact same way, but the truck driver who hit him with his mirror was driving into the sun and claimed he couldn't see him.
the driver did obviously 1 of 2 things. 1 he/she did it on her one self free will.Or 2 doing something other then driving right at the moment. cellphone maby but ho knows. dont use those pruducts while your driving thank you merry much.
So the driver did stop at the scene... Still, he needs more than "just a fine" for what he did. Loss of license for a year or so seems pretty reasonable. Hope you'll also put a dent in his bank account, when the civil case is done. Heal up, brother.
Hey dude, it was a hit & run. And it's probably not a highway. There are plenty of two lane roads where it's permissible to ride bikes. The motorist could get over a foot without ANY hassle. It's ridiculous that you'd even post that.
regardless of your view on bicylists in the road, this is messed up and the driver should be charged. looked intentional, hope he gets what he deserves.
Glad your OK man and everyone saying he shouldn't be on the road bikes are allowed on the road in most states I actually can't name a state where they are not in Ohio you get a ticket for riding a bike on the sidewalk so enough said fools and does not matter how close he was to the line cause let's face it the truck went over the line and I don't see you bashing the driver of the truck for that its called lane control and that's traffic violation right there
Riding a bicycle on a highway is like surfing in the ocean you could get hit or bit in either sport at any time that's the individuals decision to take that gamble. I would think a person would need insurance, registration and inspection sticker on their bicycle before they could sue anyone.
You my friend have not a clue. Any driver that crosses the line and hits someone should lose their license and have to ride a bike, or walk to work for the next year. Not fn Paying attention to what you are doing as a driver, is the only crime committed here. I hope this guy is sued and loses is house and car and goes into Bankruptcy. And if you are doing the same I hope you wise up before you kill someone.
These comments are making me lose faith in humanity. Where does the hate for cyclist come from? We cyclist like to ride close to the white line because there is less debris and obstacles like grates closer to the line. Cars are afforded plenty of space in their lanes that even if a cyclist is on the white line they could pass easily. In California a cyclist is to be treated like any other vehicle, and it is against the law to ride on the sidewalk. Please be more considerate of your fellow human beings.
Attempted murder right there. If there is any justice this fucker is going to jail for a long time. Sorry this happened to you mate, and I wish you the speediest recovery.
Well, only if he admits he wanted the cyclist dead.
Attempted manslaughter fits better atm.

It was a freeway. Traffic takes longer to stop and get back to the scene of an accident, and the driver of the truck that hit him did, in fact, stop.
That happened to me when I fell of
Same happened when I came off
I'm sorry this happened to you, I hope you get well and continue to ride.

car wash can cause that
I hope you can bring this person to justice. I don't know you, but I'm relieved to see that you're the poster of the video. Godspeed.

Blobernaught123 "doesn't matter if he seen the cyclist or not". It is "he saw". Learn how to talk.
good thing i was typing
Then maybe you shouldn't be on the road in your truck, if you aren't competent enough to see other road users,
Are you blind? That truck put its tires INTO the shoulder OVER the white line.
Was the person that hit him was the person that came to help him or did he hit and run?
Did anyone get the plate numbers of the truck from the video ?
Can you get the plate of the driver? Sorry to see this and hope you are doing alright.
Any update on this? Were you able to catch the guy? License plate or description maybe?
Were you able to get their license plate information from the footage?

Cameras are becoming smaller and smaller by the year, and when you lose your license or are made poor by the choices you make, someday you may be forced to see life from the perspective of a vulnerable road user.
Amen to that. If I had no camera this would have been swept under the rug as another little cycling accident.
did they catch the guy?
Some of these fucking comments, man.
Bike hate is exactly why I moved out of the midwest though. Stay strong.
Get well soon,I hope they find this guy.
Did they caught him? Please update us!
Wow - that is scary. Hope you are healing up quickly - ignore the clueless haters.
And he's driving a giant truck....what a coincidence.
Why are you riding a bicycle on a closed access highway? That's illegal in most states, but not TX?
Who told you it was a closed access highway?? Way to come to a pre-judged conclusion.
No one. The jersey walls made it look like one.
For me, the worst part of this video is not the single persons terrible actions and hitting the cyclist, but the dozens of people that drive right by after he already hit to the ground. Society is loosing touch...
Regardless of anyone's opinion, this is a hit and run. Period. Hope you heal up fast but mostly I hope the cops get a clear pic of the plate!
License plate number starts with
59H
1:50 - 1:56 sounds like a vibrating phone
Oh man...I really feel for you. Road rash is NOT fun, and that was one of the minor injuries?! What an absolutely callous human being.
I would advise you to disallow comment for this video....people tend to be hateful, and there seems to be no helpful/interesting and informed discussion on bike/road law going on.
I hope you keep on biking and are feeling better.
Yay to biking for exercise, convenience, money saving and environmental health. x
This is a rough crowd Mark. lol
Yeah, most of them are smart...and then there's a few not so smart. lol
0:26 License Plate clearly visible, and if it's true that the person only got a ticket, that is sad.
That is attempted murder.
If the driver stopped. .where was he or she
Please respond to this question and nothing more: Why were you riding so close to a travel lane when you could have been about 4 ft closer to the side of the road? I don't care what your intentions were, or whatever, just give me a straight answer on this question. I guarantee you don't.
Why intentionally hit a bike? Are they mad that someone isn't in a car? I can't comprehend where the anger would come from....Can someone please explain exactly why another person would be upset enough about a bicycle to purposely hit them with a vehicle?
EDIT:
The reddit link that sent me here said "Cyclist appears to be deliberately hit by a passing vehicle (x-post /r/bicycling)" which is why I am assuming they were intentionally hit. So, it is possibly just some person on reddit passing on his assumption, I don't know.
Probably jealous that he can never get as fit as a cyclist inside his shitty fucking pickup
chills every time
Ok.... the truck did cross the white line.
You have no idea what you're talking about, so best to STFU now.
I have a partial Plate for you (if you do not already)... 59H C are the first four...
Thank you Marc, the driver DID stop though.
+macnkat mcfie Did you manage to sue them?
+zuiderzee1973 I got every cent of his insurance policy, but I did not go after him civilly. He appeared to not have enough to make it worth while.
why the fuck are you driving your bike on a highway? That's not legal and you are responsible for doing that.
He wasn't driving his bike on the highway. He was on the *shoulder*. And it's still no excuse for swerving out of your lane to hit a bicyclist.
trailgumby And that's still part of the *highway*. And it's still no excuse for riding your bike on a highway, shoulder or not.4
ZoomZip It's not illegal. The police were called, and the driver was ticketed, not the cyclist. Also, learn to distinguish between an interstate and other roads. Also, people don't drive bikes. Also, your handle is annoying. Also, shut up.
You have no idea what the fuck you're talking about, so I suggest you shut up.
Victim blaming at it's finest.
The victim posted this: "I need to make it clear the driver did stop." Clipped Short Version
TampaKurt the victim already made it clear you NAZI!!!!
paul valadez and yet the person to whom I was replying said they didn't stop.
That video is definitely difficult to watch. I am glad you are on the road to recovery. You should contact a personal injury lawyer as soon as possible to help you recover enough money to cover all of these medical bills you are racking up. Insurance companies can be dodgy and love finding loopholes to get themselves out of paying for damages their client's cause.
if you pause it just right at :26 you can see the first few digits of his license plate are 59H
One fucking person stopped to help, WHAT HAS THIS WORLD COME TO. where another human can not help another... i take my hat of to the guy who did stop
I live in this town
Someone else found the full plate number from your video - take it to the police.
If that's not attempted murder, what the hell is?
Heal well mac, good luck finding and removing this sociopath from the roads.
Ouch. Anther reason why I won't ride without my Fly6.
the driver did obviously 1 of 2 things. 1 he/she did it on her one self free will.Or 2 doing something other then driving right at the moment. cellphone maby but ho knows. dont use those pruducts while your driving thank you merry much.
ITT: 4chan trolling Reddit successfully
So the driver did stop at the scene... Still, he needs more than "just a fine" for what he did. Loss of license for a year or so seems pretty reasonable.
Hope you'll also put a dent in his bank account, when the civil case is done.
Heal up, brother.
Maybe you shouldn't be riding your little bicycle on the highway.
Hey dude, it was a hit & run. And it's probably not a highway. There are plenty of two lane roads where it's permissible to ride bikes. The motorist could get over a foot without ANY hassle. It's ridiculous that you'd even post that.
Maybe you're a terrible human being.
scott kosman I concur with your analysis of that mingebag.
His real life is filled with anguish
Dickwad
Where is ncis when we need them to zoom in on the license plate.... i hope they catch that sob
Your on the highway.dude !!
I heard the garmin tell you that you stopped.
I hate how a few cars passed before he was helped
regardless of your view on bicylists in the road, this is messed up and the driver should be charged. looked intentional, hope he gets what he deserves.
Glad your OK man and everyone saying he shouldn't be on the road bikes are allowed on the road in most states I actually can't name a state where they are not in Ohio you get a ticket for riding a bike on the sidewalk so enough said fools and does not matter how close he was to the line cause let's face it the truck went over the line and I don't see you bashing the driver of the truck for that its called lane control and that's traffic violation right there
Sounds like a Paul Schaffer smoke alarm!
dont think youre supposed to ride your bike on a highway
i.imgur.com/do2Z9bu.png
Look how far over the line the truck goes.
I think I would ride where the speeds are not highway speeds. What if a big truck had a blowout or something. Speedy recovery Mr. Cyclist
Congrats american people, while continuing your road in your big trucks, I can see how your are helpuf for this men down....
This is so fucking cruel, Man Ive tried to get the license plate for you but I cant stop the video right, Hope you get well soon bud.
Well, if you have the same problem I'm having now, the police won't do anything unless you can ID the driver. Tough luck!
Well, hindsight is 20/20...
I hope you the authorities find the person.
You can clearly see he was driving in the break down lane when he hit you . I would sue him for all he has.
Ignore the Reddit trolls, hope you are recovering fine.
