Agreed. Meryl Streep - meh, but Ellen Barkin in Animal Kingdom phenomenal. She is so ruthless; she uses her sons as commodities or currency to get what she wants with absolute no thought to their well being. It’s great to see that she is a nice, normal person in regular life because she is so absolutely convincing as Smurf.
@@SadMother360 she's not a "nice" person, she doesn't have to stretch very far to be smurf, she'd snuff a 16 year old to get a leg up
I never heard of this show until I saw it offered on Amazon Prime video. I just started watching this past week and binge-watched the entire first season. This is an excellent show!
Agreed. You should watch the Australian movie (with Jackie Weaver) the series is based on of the same name.

When she says “baby” it makes me squirm! I only hope she’s acting.
I feel like Smurf sees Pope as a male version of herself but more intense and a little crazier.

I didn’t realize how great of an actor she was/is, until I started watching Animal Kingdom. Can’t picture anyone else playing that part. Excellent performance 🎭

Ellen Barkin was phenomenal as Smurf, she would make Tony Soprano shake in his boots. Casting of this show is impeccable.
She obviously truly loves her craft. She was married to a billionaire and certainly doesn’t have to do anything. She could just hang out and then jet set all over, so I respect Ms. Barkin for committing to the long hours of acting on such an amazing show and doing it 100%!
Thank you Ms Barkin, NO ONE ELSE is Smurf & damn you deserve an Emmy! I don’t know what season 5 will bring but I don’t think I’m alone when I say that I hope that J shooting Smurf will be just a bad dream he had & in the opening of season 5, we’ll hear Smurfs voice say “hey J, baby, are you okay?, you’ve been sleeping all day” and then we see Smurf standing over him with the smile/smirk on her face that she perfected. That would be the BEST gift to all fans of AK for getting thru this awful year!!

Ellen Barkin is the ultimate heart, rock and star of Animal Kingdom. When I watched the show I kept thinking she reminded me of The Godfather and the big crime boss that rules over the younger testosterone filled goons.

Adam she’s great, but now going forward without her, the boys have gained enough storylines and fans to sustain another season. The show has been renewed and what a brilliant acting job does Shawn do on the show. He can carry the show all by himself 😂

We've been watching this from our library, and it's fantastic - acting better than most of Hollywood's A-list and Smurf could very well be TV's (or film's) #1 villain! A cool series after this would be her early years leading up to the start of AK.

This show is amazing. BEST SHOW ON TV. ELLEN BARKIN IS A SAVAGE!! SHE IS THE SHOW!! I was devastated when Baz died. Now Smurf?? What were the producers thinking? The show surprisingly went on after Baz but I don't know if the show can survive without Smurf!! Bring them both back. Especially for season 6. Let the boys try it on their own in season 5. I hope Deron takes over. But bring back Smurf and Baz for the last season.
