  • From 1958 to 1961, Sea Hunt, starring Lloyd Bridges as underwater action hero Mike Nelson, was one of the most popular television programs in the world. It created a generation of diving enthusiasts. Today, the history of Sea Hunt and the vintage scuba gear of the era are celebrated at Sea Hunt Forever, a festival that takes place at Silver Springs State Park, Florida, the original site of much of the underwater filming for the TV program. Jonathan joins the fun at Sea Hunt Forever where he witnesses underwater knife fights, spear guns and even an underwater torch!
Jonathan Bird's Blue World is an Emmy Award-winning underwater science/adventure program that airs on public television in the United States.

@@BlueWorldTV No kidding!! I asked my to be husband on our THIRD date about the little boy inside him. ooohhhh? He says, "I threw that kid under the bus a long time ago"! I grinned to myself thinking oh honey, I am going to help you drag that poor boy out of the morgue, resuscitate him and marry him! So, I tell him an awful lot of times, I married a 12 year old!! That kid in all of us needs to be nurtured and loved. Laughing has to become our mainstay, my 12 year old husband. Marriage can be oh so much FUN!! If it isn't, get out of the relationship, accept that a great marriage takes tons of laughter to grow up together, and to make consistent bouts of laughter happen.

As a kid I loved Sea Hunt. I always wanted to be like Mike Nelson exploring the bottom of the sea.
Many years later, after a round of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, I thought what the heck am I awaiting for. I made it a goal that when I got through my treatment I would get certified. I now get to dive like Mike Nelson.
BTW just passed 10 years cancer free.

By modern standards it seems a little hokey, but there was a wonderful sense of adventure in those shows and what I love about it is that it was good for the whole family. There is almost no "family friendly" programming anymore. Except Blue World of course.

    Yep.
I Was 10 years old here in Orlando, FL in 1958. With lots of crystal clear lakes (back then) we played a lot of Sea Hunt.
Years later, my jr high band director taught me how to use his S.C.U.B.A. gear. In highschool I worked for Hal Watts (world record deep dive holder) at his store in Orlando. Certifications came in and in 1968 Hal certified me. I used to do a lot of cave diving, wouldn't do it now, for over 10 years. We didn't have "BC's" back then. We used Clorox bottles with a hole cut in the side for exhaust air and attached it to our upper arms with a cord. Going up too fast. ... spill out some air. Need to go up. ... exhale more air in bottle.
What memories. Gob bless Lloyd Bridges.

Mike Nelson usually had a lesson or two in most shows. I think instructors could use parts of Sea Hunts for classes. I especially liked the episode where he showed a balloon bursting during assent. He told his students their lungs would do the same thing if they held their breath going up.

I know most of those divers. A good bunch of guys just out to have fun and enjoy the sport as it used to be. Raw and challenging. The push button divers of today couldn't hold a candle to them. Just my $.02
