I have this problems as I am currently studying in Beijing and my Chinese heritage (My grandpa is from South China) makes me looks very like local and I cannot speak complex Chinese (I understand most but can't speak) and the karaoke place clerk like talks to me meanwhile the only person in our group that's fluent in Chinese is this Ukrainian girl and he keeps talking to me even though I can't answer anything

This is the first time I realize Josh’s family can speak Chinese. Josh’s Chinese is definitely a bit rusty. Certain phrases sound really good while others not so much. It sorta comes in and out a bit, but overall quite understandable. I am even more surprised that his mother’s Chinese sound better than Josh and also seems to be more fluent at it.
I'm surprised too, because generally you learn languages better at a younger age. But maybe it is because he went to an international school, where I presume they mostly spoke English, while she had to manage daily life in Chinese.
Well considering he is quarter Chinese and southeast Asian, I am proud he even bothered learning it and resonating with his grandma’s culture despite being majority British.
I'm am going to learn Arabic and I'm gotta made my kids speak it or In that case pass on pass generation because that Muslim do in Malaysia and Indonesia and Bangladesh and Pakistan

for someone who probably hasn't spoken chinese for many years, his chinese is very good. some intonations are wrong/off, but that could easily pass as a dialect, and the fact that it's been a really long time since he last spoke chinese. it's still easy to understand what he's saying, so big props to josh for managing to speak chinese for 24 hours.

Maybe she was in a rural area where few people spoke English? If adults can get away with speaking in a language they are comfortable some of them will, so if someone has put in the time and effort to learn it is praiseworthy so yea I am surprised. I know people who live in a foreign country for 10+years and still don't speak the language

As a half chinese kid who is very bad at it, I loved this. It was easy to follow Josh and relate to the struggle. Also his accent is very good by my standards.

From this ep, I understand how nice it is for Korean and English culture to be integrated and explored on Korean Englishman, because I could understand the Mandarin this time around. Haha love this episode so much! I'm also a TCK, from Thailand, that spend primary school in Seoul and secondary school in Shanghai. So the mix of mandarin, korean and english really brings back memories!! 😄💕

I’m trilingual (English, Korean, Chinese) and I relate to this video so much 😂 At 3:24 when Josh says 「我們今天在說中文」 his 「中文」 has a heavy Korean accent, it’s so interesting hahahaha! It’s like when I speak Spanish, my Korean accent comes out super strong. Seeing others in this multilingual community is super fun!
