Because kids and young people are never taught anything about the economy, money, currency and debt. Not even in college.
Yeah. I had a girlfriend with a BS in accounting and an MBA. She was clueless about money and didn't even have a household budget. In spite of having a respectable salary, she was buried in credit card debt and taking vacations she couldn't afford, eating and drinking out etc. She had the brass to ask me for a "loan." Oh, hell no!

I really don't mind buy now pay later when it's interest free. Helped me buy many large purchases interest free when i was using the rest of my spare money investing monthly. Using it as a tool can be really advantageous to reduce large outflows splitting it up monthly with no extra cost.
Generational wealth has to be grown and men (and women) have to choose a path of the sacrifice of withholding spending to build wealth. I watched my great aunt, grandmother and mother build wealth to pay for college and pass on to me. Remember when you are flush with cash on pay day, ask yourself can a portion of this money grow to make a brighter future
70% of wealthy families ($3Mil+ networth) will lose their wealth by the second generation and 90% will lose it by the third.
The genral problem with generational wealth is that the 3rd or 4rth generation blows all the wealth and ends back at square one per many, many studies I have seen over my life.
This is because the later generations do not value the wealth due to they do not understand or appreciate the effort it took to get there. So they waste it via spending it all.

i grew up in florida...we learned allot about money and assets...moved to california...was all spend spend spend, shop till ya drop.
One of the best lines in a movie (Ruthless People). Judge Reinhold is a stereo salesmen and this young kid walks in and is awed by this gigantic stereo system, which obviously he cannot afford. He asks 'how much'? His answer from Judges character is, 'that's the best part, if you cant afford it, finance it'.

Poor because of your large vehicle with oversized rims. Then you trade it in and go bigger. Just ask around so many people refuse to drive a station wagon or minivan. They are too cool for school haha
I bought a new truck a few weeks ago and I asked the salesman where all the used vehicles were all I seen was a lot full of new ones. He said, Because the used ones sell right away and few can afford a new one. Then I saw a one Ford Lightning a 100% EV. I looked at the sticker price and it was over $80k. And I said, You sell many of these .. we both started laughing.
What's your advice for a new in service military person, that plans on eating in the chow hall, wearing only the military clothes, not going out buying cars but walking or riding a bike and not partying or drinking? But thinking about just banking every check outside of small needs?
You're already on the right track. I'd suggest you get a high paying CD in a credit union (I've got a 5.4% one now), save up, cut down on the unnecessary expenses, invest a little on Robin Hood, take it one day at a time and you'll be fine.
We need people to be broke keep spending money so i can keeo making money. Its an equilibrium to keep everything equal.
Not me. Been there done that. It's time for me to rise up. I'm doing it. I will be comfortable or die trying.

Some get rich but most stay poor because most don't take finance seriously. They don't continue to learn and grow in their financial knowledge and do things that will help them the most, they would rather spend and get entertained regardless of how damaging to their finances it is. This make most of them cash poor and living paycheck to paycheck because they don't even understand the basic definition of assets and think things like their house and car are assets instead of actual productive assets that would grow their wealth but won't be available to spend right away.
Everybody just thinks about the end result. They don't get taught or think of how they going to get there
