Ben Collins x Andy Wilman Podcast Part 2

- Content Warning: the following film contains scenes of a man putting his own feet on his own sofa.
And saying stuff like: "Clarkson, Hammond & May - they look thick.. but they're not thick"
If you enjoyed part 1, brace for impact. Wilman tells us what really went down in the Deep South on the American Special, the Argentina debacle, why & how Top Gear became a hit, Clarkson vs Special Forces. How Wilman identifies as David Brent.
I also included some revenge from the editors whose eyes bled on many a late night working with Wilman into the small hours to whittle the show into the masterpiece we wanted to see on Sunday at 8pm. This one's for the Top Gear die hards!!!! :) - Авто та транспорт
Can I just say a big thank you to everyone who took the time to watch Ben's podcast. I had no idea what a superb interviewer he is - I just thought his main skills were driving fast and kicking my arse in court - but he is tremendously skilled at making the chat enjoyable. When we fell out and he had to leave, we still missed him terribly, so I'm glad you enjoy us both back together.
Enjoyed both of those, I even warmed to Wilman in the end. Wouldn't want to work for him though, he seems like bloody hard work! 🤣
@@sambrowneI agree with you, but I do think somewhere their is a hidden compassion in him. All you have to do is work hard and try hard... he doesn't suffer fools
Andy top gear is, was and probably always will be the best TV show ever produced. I loved every episode and re watch it a lot. When I applied to be studio guest the waiting list was something like 19 years... Proof of a good show
what a top thing to write as a former boss. Thanks for the shows - they were amazing
It was a bloody interesting interview to be fair.
You could add 100 more episodes with Wilman and I wouldn't get tired of them I promise. Thank you for taking time out of your day to make these! 👍
So say we all!
He is a master story teller indeed, I never knew there were people like him… little wonder his films are so good
Not all. The The shoes on the sofa tell you Willman is an arsehole. QED.@@SeanFlynnNB
Spot on …
Lolz it was enough sitting him down for this long but glad you've enjoyed it - will try to pin him down for some more
These two interview vids with Andy Wilman have been the best and most interesting one's ive seen in a long time. I can't thank you enough for this Ben & Andy. As a Top Gear head from the days of my youth this has been a real pleasure to watch. Thank you Both.
glad you enjoyed it - who next...?
@@BenCollinsDrivesGot to be the ol' miserable bugger, surely?
@@BenCollinsDrivesClarkson surely. Loving the content recently. Easily one of my favourite channels on UA-cam.
@@BenCollinsDrives Just a suggestion. How about one of the F1 pundits? David Coulthard? Martin Brundle? Damon Hill? I think Damon was once rumoured to be the 'Stig'. Great interview with Andy Willman, absolutely loved it, thank you.
@@BenCollinsDriveswho next? Wilman and the boys… it’d be great to see a you, DriveTribe. Wilman, Clarkson, Hammond, his daughter, and May do a crossover.
This is the content all of us who grew up with top gear now crave - we don't want explosions, we want the cool stories :)
Exactly, Imagine if they did like a third series of Oh, Cook, and the other two were just in a dining room chatting shit.
keep those podcasts up! the trio is next!!!
Sitting here watching this and I'm thinking to myself... Dam that couch looks comfortable.
It would be my 2nd bed!
Actually started looking for one from seeing it!
Me too, but also imagining the beating I’d get off my mom for having my shoes on it like that 😊
shoes on couch though?
@@CheeeseToastie indeed - how can you be truly comfortable on the couch with your shoes on?
Awesome, part 2 of 6 right? 👍 😂
throws half the CVs away "i don't hire unlucky people" that's fucking class xD
This is balls
This is something that should be somewhere out there in movie or something as my boss in car dealership did the same some 15-20 years ago and that was in Latvia, Riga 😅
This can't be (it can, but I do not believe) accidentally and I am sure he do not know Andy personally.
Never the less I keep that thing alive by different means but yea, do not associate myself with unlacky people 😁
Dear Ben,
Top Gear is kind of mentorship for me through live. I learned a lot English from it, a love to traveling by car and some smaller things. Top Gear for me is like band The Prodigy with which I grow up as a culture persons 🎉
I could watch those podcasts about your life together with guys from TG even if there will be 100 of them. I believe there are tonns of stories to tell.
Thanks for this bringing out and waiting for Jeremy, James and Richard to come for talk.
You make your own luck. Apply five times.
That's fucking badass ngl. Something straight out of a movie scene.
Fuck me, this was a quality interview. Loved it.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen an interview with Andy Wilman, despite him being an architect of one of my favourite TV shows. This has been genuinely fascinating. Thanks to both of you. And thank you to Andy for his contributions to all the laughs over the years.
"Top gear then bed" was absolutely something I experienced!
If you could sleep for laughing
Top Gear was the best thing about Sundays. It made you less depress not having to think about Monday.
The way Wilman talks, behaves, even looks reminds me of Clarkson so much!!
as if they were brothers!
Fantastic interview!!
Thank you Stig!
I think they both came from the same mold 😆
I started watching Sand Job with my 9 and 10 year old daughters over the weekend. When the show started, they were "DAD! we don't want to watch a car show"... 5 minutes in they quit complaining. An hour in when I said it was time for bed, they were angry that they wouldn't get to finish until the next day. We finished it up that night and they are excited to watch more episodes!
2004-2010 was peak Top Gear.
I'm from New Delhi, India and the 1st time I watched top gear was in June 2009, when I was visiting my brother in London. I came back from a run in the Southwark park, turned on the TV, didn't know what Dave was and saw this show on that channel, knowing nothing about it and I was instantly hooked.
I now live in Newcastle and still watch episodes from 2003-2010 somewhat regularly.
don't think you understand the meaning of the word, "peak"
@@RichO1701e - keep thinking.
I still remember watch it on my grandparents television in kota
@@RichO1701e
Some like the specials.
Some like the early seasons like ME.
I started disliking Top Gear once it went Specials only and turned it off.
Started watching it again When they started doing car tests again and once in a while did a special.
First time they did a special or cheap car challenge, or the car vs public transport, it was amazing.
But when ALL EPISODES was that, it became boring.
@@Metabbroke4587 - 👍
Man. September is going to be bitter sweet. Always hate when good things end. I hope Amazon gives us a show of the 3 guys just sitting around and reminiscing, telling stories over beers.
Fantastic. Loved it."Without me, they would all be sleeping in doorways, in their own piss with a dog on a string, shouting at passers by with their can of Special Brew". Beat that.
“Content Warning: the following film contains scenes of a man putting his own feet on his own sofa. “
Love this response in the description to the people freaking out in the comments of part 1
Did anyone else get a bit teary eyed when Andy described 'The Last Grand Tour' at the end of the podcast? The best shows in recent history, Mr. Wilman! You are a true legend!
Thanks Ben for this second episode ,, You can hold your head high knowing as a team , You all made it work so well !! Mr Wilman included
Okay, for one thing, two commas doesn’t add more of a pause than one comma. For another, you don’t need a space between punctuation and the word before it.
I usually listen to these sorts of podcasts.
But the body language here is superb!
Over the course of 2 hours i have watched a man warm up again to Ben! Towards the end there was no more animosity felt in the body language of Andy!
This is honestly the best 2 part interview I have seen, hooked from start to finish, keep it up Ben 🫡
Right? It's just comfort viewing at its finest, the trio may often get the praise, but it's clear the magic goes much deeper.
Agreed.
Nice behind the scenes, Quote: "if it wasn't for me, they'd all be sitting in door ways, with a dog on a string and a can of Special Brew"
Brilliant... I nearly wet myself when Andy said that, all I have to say is thank you for all the years of entertainment with the "real" Top Gear and now TGT, Sad to hear it could all be ending though.
If you’re watching this clearly we are all lovers of old Top Gear, this insight into the working minds of the show we grew up is just fantastic. If there were another 50 follow up episodes I would sit and enjoy every single moment. Absolutely fascinating, thankyou Ben for letting us all relive our childhoods!
Final thought, closing the show on their terms when the going is still good is not only a huge decision but a very sad and wise choice. As viewers we will enjoy and still go back and watch them in years to come and remember the good times, but it will bring great sadness. On a more positive note, Ben eludes to inspiring new generations of film makers, contents creators etc on UA-cam and that is the best part. The things we enjoy will live on for years to come.
Fascinating interview Ben. I have never seen a full on interview with Wilman, and he is clearly quite a character. Great to see that behind all the bluster he still holds you in high regard, as do you him I would say. Great viewing. Thanks Ben.
Can't wait for part 3, 4, 5, through to at least 10
Absolutely bloody brilliant watching this. Used to watch proper Top Gear with me Dad every Sunday. Wish that the Grand Tour didn't have to end its still bloody briilliant.
Brilliant - and a great interview technique - letting Andy speak was great - so funny. More please, it's a long time since I laughed so much!
Thanks Ben for the interview.
Thanks Andy for being a very special part of Top Gear history.
That was brilliant. Arghh the emotions are running high 😅 can’t believe we’re staring down the barrel of the last ever Grant Tour 😭
Sometimes certain people come together and total success is born.
take any 1 of the cast and crew away and the show wont work. Wilman is a genius at what he does. Clarkson, Hammond and May are who they are on screen as they are off and Wilman knows exactly how to get that across successfully.
Absolutely loving these long form chats about all the old top gears. More!
This was awesome! thank you, from someone who has watched literally every "Original" Top Gear episode from 2002 and every Grand Tour. Thank you for all the great memories! It was was show that will never be topped.
100% has to be one of my favorite interviews/podcasts in recent times... Andy Wilman in long format, being interviewed by someone that knows him well, and the genius of Ben to have an anonymous group chat of former/current employees to add commentary and ask questions instead of the basic uninteresting stuff we viewers would ask that would just be a boring eye roll for Andy was a genius recipe! Great work Ben, Now just blackmail Andy into doing a few more later after The Grand Tour wraps, and about this curious movie... 🤔 😉👍
Wonderful 2-parter; thanks Ben & Andy. I watched the old TG and remember when JC appeared and breathed new life into it. I've been rewatching all of the post-2000 TGs and can't believe it started 20+ years ago. It's gone by in a flash. I imagine I will watch them all again at some point. Thanks everyone associated with it. What memories.
For the love of all things good. It's not old. The 3 of them and you all doing what you do won't ever get old! ❤
Amazing Amazing Part 2. Just as Part 1
Thanks Ben and Andy
Listening to you both in this and the last episode almost brings a tear to my eye. It’s hard to explain but TG was such a huge part of my childhood and is largely to thank for the career I have now! Thanks Ben & Andy!
Thank you! Great talk, informative and fun. I appreciate these stories, as your masterpiece of a show was the backbone of my understanding of car culture. I'd enjoy you chatting Tiff up next.
Ben is an intelligent and delightful instigator, particularly when Andy is in his sites. I love this interview ! Old school Top Gear and Grand Tour are brilliant because of these two minds. Andy is one of the best producers out there IMO.
Awesome Shetland got a random name check always wanted top gear or Grand tour to come here and do its own rally as it would be epic.
Absolutely great interview, get any of the trio on would be great, and a lot of the F1 boys from the 90s
Thank you, Ben. I truly mean that. These 2 episodes filled in so many gaps and, answered so many questions, especially, who is this Andy Wilman and what's his side of the story. From what little I know about how your tenure at Top Gear ended, I was pleasantly surprised to see Andy being interviewed by you. One could see things being uncomfortable at times for each of you but, good on you both for not letting that interfere. I'm guessing enough time has passed for you both to clear the air and I hope it helped each of you in some way. Cheers, mate!! (I'm American but, was married to an Aussie, who took me to the UK a few times.)
You click on a UA-cam video and then 56 minutes have flown by, that doesn't happen very often. Thank you Andy and all the crew for all the dicking about over the years, loved every single minute.
Nice comment 👌😄
Edit Wank brilliantly applied. The music selection is what made the series for me. Introduced me to many artists I listen to today.
Great point about top gear making the weekend last a little longer. It definitely felt like that🙌🏼🤣
Absolute legend - full stop! So glad that I was a small part of it.
Thanks Ben and Andy. I would pay hard cash to spend an afternoon in the pub with you two hearing everything and anything about the Top Gear days.
I recently began re-watching all the old Top Gear videos; currently I'm on S12e01. This two-part interview was the perfect intermission. Now, on with the show!
I've been doing the same, started on Series 1 and am on Series 20.
Now that episode where Jeremy is pushed into near freezing water has a whole different meaning. I need to watch it again.
One of the best pieces of UA-cam I’ve ever watched. Could listen to these battle stories till the cows come home.
Bravo, well done and thank you so much for the insight of the people who built Top Gear, this is gold dust really.
Never thought I’d sit through both of them but I’m now left here wanting more.
That’s was a brilliant podcast Ben ✌️🇬🇧
I love the way Wilman reclines on the couch like some Bourbon king dispensing wisdom. Absolutely fabulous interview, thank you very much Ben!
Bloody fantastic Ben, great interview. Love your channel.
At 11:00 I was having flashbacks of hitting the apple on the apex and Clarkson eating a piece of it 😂 knowing the back and forth between makes it all the more funny when he has to accept Ben knew what he was talking about
dog on a piece of string and a special-brew, sleeping in a doorway. Total class mate
Probably the easiest to watch podcast I've ever seen, well, along with part 1! Wilman is quite the legend, and Ben is a natural in this setting. Great content, loving the channel.
This was a rare moment in time. It can’t and won’t be replicated.
Words can't describe how amazing this is
I love long interviews! Thanks stig, your the best!
Brilliant. What a great look back to so many peoples chapters of their lives. That Sunday evening feeling to close out the week. Magic.
Very refreshingly take on the biggest ever show! Brilliant insight thank you.
Thanks for putting this together! Enjoyed the behind the scenes and getting a viewpoint interview from Mr. Wilman.
Excellent insight to it all. Thank you Ben and Andy. Pity about it all finishing, I even wrote Mr Wilman a year and a half ago to request an episode of The Grand Tour be filmed in New Zealand, with kit cars. Don't know if he ever received the letter though, or maybe it ended up face down after he threw it away.
Thanks for not making us wait for part 2!!
This is the interview I've been eager to watch for years. Thanks :)
Just Brilliant! As Andy said, an organic beast that grew and grew. Love the Layer Cake reference too Ben, maybe you need to find that RS6 and take it for a spin up the drive at Stoke Park for a 20th Anniversary blast!
You could see him glazing over when Ben was telling that story, 🤣🤣
This was great to watch. Thank you for doing this... and please do more when ever the two of you are able/willing to.
That's funny how Andy sits there like an emperor.
They should’ve had some lacky dropping peeled grapes into his mouth 😄
My take on his pose is that he reclined there like a man who has got absolutely nothing to prove to anybody. Because he’s done it and he’s still doing it.
What a brilliant couple of hours. And could have easily been 10!! Thankyou
Andy wilman is a god damn treasure.
Just brilliant loved every minute 😮
Thanks Ben and Andy, such great interviews.
I just stopped work to have dinner and watch an entire video podcast. Never done that before! Keep up the great work man.
It was nice to hear Andy Wilman talk about Tom Cruise in the terms that he did.
Nice to hear a no bullshit honest take about what the real guy was like to spend time with.
I’m not particularly a Tom Cruise fan or non fan, but he’s a good movie star, but it pleases me that Tom Cruise came to Top Gear and just really enjoyed being there for the day. .
I think that says a lot about the show and the people who made it and that’s probably why we all enjoyed it so much.
Looking forward for the part 3, please make it happen!
Really interesting to get a look behind the scenes at the madness /genius that brought together arguably my favourite show in my youth. It'd be fascinating to pose some questions towards Richard, James and Jeremy if they would come on the show, I know James has done some similar podcasts
2 hours of me glued to the screen, inhaling every single word. Thank you both (the trio, and the crew etc.) for all you've done to entertain me through my teenage years all the way to adulthood.
What a brilliant interview, I could have watched another two episodes
these two videos were totally brilliant, thank guys
Thank you to you both. That was absolutely brilliant 👏
Awesome interview! Can't wait for more, thanks for doing those. And can't wait for Zimbabwe. So it's September then...
Many thanks once again for a great interview
Great interviews. I could listen you two for hours. 😊 Thank you for making these videos
loved every second of this sessions!
Top Gear Sunday night memories - fantastic ❤ Will always love CHM, their cockin' about and all their telly shows; Top Gear made me love cars too. These interviews were excellent, Ben - thank you muchly and Mr Wilman, it was a pleasure to finally hear your stories, no wonder you and JC are still friends after all these years 😂 Brilliant sod that and crack on attitude 😊 much more please 👍🏻
Fantastic. Thank you Ben and Andy.
Thankyou Ben & Andy for your humour & realism about what went on & how you saw it. I don't really listen & watch stuff for too long, but this i had to.....
Fantastic interview. Really enjoyed that. Thank you.
Fantastic watch! Great to hear some behind the scenes stories from the show we all loved.
This was great and I look forward to seeing you two in conversation again!
What an absolutely interesting interview. Loved it.
What a great interview, it really was lightning in a bottle. ❤
Amazing, thank you Ben.
Brilliant stuff Ben! Great two part interview with Andy - it brought back so many memories....loved it!
Thank you so much fir this Ben and Andy. Best interview I've seen in years. You seem to get the best out of Andy. I hope you manage to do more interviews of him in the future. Great job everyone.
I could listen to you both talk about stuff all day. Brilliant.
Fantastic honest discussion. Class retrospection. Great interview. Clarkson, Hammond and May have to come do this too!
I think that gran tour has made IT more emotional and grander and I love that
Great interview Ben, some great behind the scenes stories. I hope you interview more behind the scenes stories.
