As of today the Sombrero Reef is completely dead. 100% Coral Mortality

When I was Florida kid in the 1950s we went to the keys every August for crawfish season. We went to the Sombrero Light once. We needed gas and traded the keeper beer for gas. Mom, brother and I got to climb to the top. I remember the beautiful water colors of the Gulf Stream I guess. They had with a Jacob’s ladder or a hammock over the water but I was not allowed on it. My Dad and uncles dove and spear fished beneath the platform. My uncle brushed up against fire coral was was miserable the rest of our weekend. Always came with with sunburns and coolers of tails. Long time ago.

Great memory. Enjoyed reading it. I grew up bully netting crawfish. We had our spots. Pre park when we could work inside the bay
up outside Angelfish and Caesars back in the day. Good times. We did then and still enjoy the keys. Like you since the fifties.
No better place to be. Thanks for sharing your memory.

@@timwalker3157 back in the early 50s they speared them. Always loved the Keys, we used to stay at the Old Wooden Bridge Fish Camp. The Odems ran it back then. No A/C if I remember correctly.

@@Bcs1770 Yes. My dad grew up gigging them. Gone gone are those days. There were some shacks on East Arsenicker.
They are a favorite memory I have back then. Many fond ones growing up there.
Paradise. It still is. I miss the days we had there. Now I mostly dive and enjoy the wrecks and reefs. We never had a/c. I can’t imagine people not having it now.
Lol. Why we stayed on the water so much. Thank you for the post.

Nice video. Is sombrero reef like this accessible by shore too, or is a boat necessary to reach out far enough?

Thank you for the nice comment! Sombrero is definitely too far to access from shore, it’s miles out there, so even too far for kayaks. They have some nice snorkel boats that we see out there all the time, that would be a great option as well! Those snorkel boats have some “secret” tie up spots too, so they are always in prime locations on the reef!!
