Yeah. We just overtook San Jose by population to become the 10th largest city in the U.S. at about 1,042,090. The total metro area is a little over 2.2 million.
I grew up in big cities…been around the globe (United States Army) and used to reside here in Austin back in 88-92. The population was around 300,000; to include the suburbs (re-clarify) rural areas (at that time) such as: Cedar Park, Georgetown, Pflugerville, & Round Rock! Well, the skyline back then had approximately (3) skyscrapers with that red funny shaped building was maybe 300 feet or plus (not certain)…but (oh my!) I moved to San Antonio and just visited Austin & its modernized skyline makes the Alamo City downtown look like an old western barn! IJS!

Most cites are really an amalgamation of super-fragmented municipalities. But even if you look at the city proper Austin will surpass San Jose in Jan 2024. (extrapolating from the 2020 census). Given Austin's growth rate.. that will likely happen much sooner.

It was labelled Americas Most Underrated big city and I believe that. Hollywood has romanticized cities like New York and Los Angeles that people think those are the only cities that offer all and nothing outside those two have the same or similar things. I think California is dying right now; and I hope it bounces back from more people leaving if this trend keeps going... mainly due to its policies and high costs people move to other states. If there's a city in California I would definitely move to is San Diego. LA is overpopulated, overrated and its homeless problem is extremely overwhelming. Plus with an increae in thieves (same as San Francisco) breaking in cargo trains and stores because of its no-chase policies is just ridiculous.
Skyline King, Atl is much bigger than Austin but I notice Austin has taller projects under construction or completed in past few yrs. Why do you think that is? I’ve been to Austin and what I noticed was how it quickly becomes rural outside of the city where as Atl’s metro is much more developed. Which makes sense Austin is 1/3 the msa of Atlanta. Is it because the development in Austin is more confined to a smaller area thus more height makes sense? Or is there simply a different type of demand for height in Austin? I know it doesn’t matter, development is development. But we build 25-33 story buildings like they’re coming off an assembly line and it gets boring ha ha. Would love to see something tall and interesting.
Austin is seeing some significant height development and that is great to see.. Atlanta is outpacing most cities (except NYC) with the amount residential towers being built in the downtown/midtown area. Although several towers where built in the 25-33 story range, most recent developments hover around the 34-39 story range. The towers are filling in quickly so the demand is high. There is also a 61 story residential tower currently under construction. Atlanta has demonstrated that it could easily support(fill) towers in the 45-65 stories range and likely higher. Any new development in the 25 to 33 story range will not have much of a view unless it's on the margins. The manhattanization of the Atlanta skyline is well beyond its initial stage.

Not anytime soon! Highrises are coming up from Downtown Dallas to Victory Park, Uptown, Design District, Deep Ellum and up to Highland Park! Not including Galleria area and Las Colinas!Plus there's more than 25 highrises going up 30 to 35 north of Downtown in Plano and Frisco!
