  • In this episode, I rejoin the adventures onboard Safar after months of working away. My younger brother Callum joins me for his first sail on Safar and we depart to the Island of Ibiza where we meet with some friends and experience the madness of Ibiza's nightlife

    Definitely good to have you back - one of the best You Tube sailing channels! Very pleased to see that you scrub the boat from the water, which I often do, but, it looks a lot warmer where you are than back here in the UK. I had hoped to follow your footsteps but the Orca whale situation, which appear to be worsening, has put me off.

    • @sailingsafar
      @sailingsafar  Рік тому

      Thanks Chris! it feels great to be sailing again after being away with work.The momentum of the channel has slowed a lot over the last 4 months, so it has crossed my mind if I should continue. there's only so much self promotion I can do. Scrubbing the hull took me about 4 hours, I was starting to get pretty cold at that point and the sea temp was 21C, so I don't envy you doing it in the UK unless you've got thick wetsuit! Hope you manage to sail across soon, I see some of the orcas have been tagged now, so there is fairly reliable data on what ares to avoid. I'm heading back towards Gibraltar later this week.

    Great sailing. I just did this summer what you did, Calp small mountain looked nice from the sea. I have a boat similar to yours in size. Small mast. My mast has a fixed fitting at the middle to install a staysail and use my boat as a cutter rig just like you have yours in Safar. My question to you is if there is no need of running backstays to support the force on the middle of the mast? Cheers!!!

      I'm not so sure I'd be able to teach you too much, but if you find you yourself on Holiday near Safar I'd certainly be happy to show you around the boat and take you for sail.

    Welcome back Morgan. You are enjoying some cracking sailing on the Med. What is the ring used for on your port pushpit?

    • @sailingsafar
      @sailingsafar  Рік тому +1

      Thanks Craig! I try to only film the sailing parts, but the engine has seen some hours also. Have you launched yours now? I saw the pic's of it looking ready! The ring is for a Aquair 100 Water Generator, good pice of kit, but only really for offshore use as it's susceptible to getting snagged on the 1000's of fishing pots here.

    Welcome home... The night life segment was wild... I must be an old fart... LOL I really like your Saga 36... Doesn't look like there is much head room forward tho... Whats the forward cabin like... There's a Saga 40 in Malaysia for sale that has taken my eye...

      Thanks Colin! great to see you're still tuning in after my time away. You're right, Safar is short of room forward of the saloon, my brother was banging his head daily! Between Ibiza and bumping our heads I imagine our IQ has dropped a little. I have seen the Saga 40 listing, it's certainly a take you anywhere boat! There is a video on UA-cam of a Saga 40 being built in a barn which is a great watch.

    Hi. Can you let me know what the chart plotter is that you are using please? Have just started following your videos and they are just brilliant.

    • @sailingsafar
      @sailingsafar  9 місяців тому +1

      Thanks Roy! Glad you’re enjoying them, I’ve just finished a 6 day solo passage, so a new video coming soon
      I have the Raymarine Axiom 9” plotter. If I’m being completely honest, I don’t think its great. I find that the software freezes occasionally and it often happens when I need jt most. I prefer using my IPad/ Navionics when possible. Hope that helps.

      I'll research them. One other question as I rather like the decking paint you have used, do you recall the paint manufacturer? as my original gel on the decking is showing it's age.

    • @sailingsafar
      @sailingsafar  9 місяців тому +1

      I used International InterDeck Cream, it definitely seems to be a favourite of peoples as Safar gets a lot of compliments and a number of people have painted their decks with the same colour as a result, I’ve certainly been happy with it, although Safar is probably due another coat as its a little worn down now with all the recent miles.

    Random question: what do you use on your external woodwork- especially your companionway?

    • @sailingsafar
      @sailingsafar  Рік тому +1

      Hi Ben, For the exterior Safar is coated with International Woodskin, which I find to be a good substitute to Varnish, it lasts multiple seasons and requires very little maintenance and is easy to touch up, It's a compromise though as I'd love to have a high gloss varnish finish, but I'd rather spend my time sailing and not maintaining the brightwork all the time. Hope that helps.

    • @benh9928
      @benh9928 Рік тому

      @@sailingsafar brilliant. I have just got a Rival 36 and the companionway varnish is down to greying teak in places, so something needs to be done. Like you I like the idea of varnish, but not the time to get the coats on, or the upkeep. I had been considering Woodskin, but wasn’t sure what the finish looked like- suspected yours may be and looks good enough to me! Maybe late when time is available…… but then again 🤷‍♂️
