    I was born in Frankfort Ky. It is all relative and better than many towns in Kentucky. About 11 pct of my graduating class are lgbtqia

    OMG! South Dakota, Wyoming, Kentucky and Kansas? Really? I don't think I will be moving anytime soon ... LOL! 😜

      Yep. HRC only has 24 ranked towns in its list. These are the best. I guess there are a lot of towns in blue states that either don’t care or are too anti-LGBTQ to want to try to be ranked. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    I'd be interested in hearing you guys talk about the criteria you use in this series as well as the weight you give the various data points. It's striking that so many of the cities on all your lists are located in red states in the middle of the country. I'd guess that is because you give more weight to cost/affordability than LGBT+ inclusion. Keep up the good work!

      There are 6 data points we use to rank the cities: rent based on Zillows ZORI, house values based on Zillows ZHVI, cost of living based on best places.nets rating, US Census for median & average incomes and HRCs Municipal Equality Index. All have a single point except cost of living is 2x and HRCs score is 5x.

    Eureka Springs AR could have been considered.

    • @queermoney
      @queermoney  3 місяці тому

      It was. It came in 12th out of the 24 mostly due to its lower HRC Municipal Equality Index score. It was got a 53/100. Great for a little town in AR.
      BTW, it came in runner up for the state of AR when we analyzed the state: watch that here: ua-cam.com/video/fKt4r_iOX1I/v-deo.htmlsi=h-yGSJr3vbHTICHg

    First, Vermont is not a red state! I mean Bernie Sanders is one of their Senators! Yes, the governor is a Republican but he doesn't support what the current Republican party is doing. More people there have voted for Democratic Presidential candidates in recent years. And maybe Burlington, VT, is not considered small because its population is just over 50,000, but it is very LGBTQ+ friendly.
    And second, what about Western Massachusetts? There are many towns that are under 50,000 and they are all very, very LGBTQ+ friendly. There are housing deals to be found and good jobs. Oh, and lots of colleges (if that's what you want). Northampton, MA, is a great example (lesbian capitol of the east coast?).

      We didn’t say it was a red state. John just mentioned that Pullman was one of the few towns that came from a blue state. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Wasn't Laramie where Matthew Sheppard was murdered for being gay?

    • @joelkarie
      @joelkarie 3 місяці тому +2

      Yeah...I love this channel, but I feel like the fact that one of the most heartbreaking and publicly-known acts of violence committed against a gay person in the last 30 years started in Laramie should have been mentioned. I am sure they are 'working hard.' The death of this young gay man was all I associated with Laramie for the majority of my life. I feel like this should have been addressed in the segment.

      We mentioned it when we covered the state of Wyoming. Hate crimes are happening in almost every city in the US. Recently we’ve seen an uptick in places like NYC and LA even. We don’t intend to minimize this but it was also 30 years ago. There are a lot of folks in Wyoming that are just as appalled by it as we are. Let’s never forget it, but also not punish people who have nothing to do with it. Personally having grown up in Denver during the time when he lived there and knowing people who were his friends, I know there’s a lot of pain around it, but many of them want to use it as a way to help WY become a more welcoming place rather than push people in the state in the opposite direction.

      You are right. That was nearly 30 years ago and many folks in Laramie have pushed to make it a better place for all.

      To reiterate: I love this channel. I have learned so much from these podcasts and visited many of the locations mentioned in previous episodes after learning about them through the channel. I remember the Laramie portion of the Wyoming episode. I even visited Laramie this past February on a trip to Cheyenne. I am happy to see it on this list. Thanks for creating this content and introducing me to new places across the country.

    I would think Crestline CA might qualify.

    • @queermoney
      @queermoney  3 місяці тому

      We’re not familiar with Crestline and it doesn’t have an HRC Municipal Equality Index score so we didn’t have much to go by on rating its LGBTQ friendliness. Thanks for your suggestion. 🥰

    These sound like AWFUL places to live!

    • @queermoney
      @queermoney  3 місяці тому

      Of course there not NYC, LA or San Francisco, but for small towns in the middle of America I’d say there doing a damn good job at trying to be welcoming to LGBTQ folks. Some of these towns have a better HRC Municipal Equality Index score than big cities in “blue” states.
      Additionally, we made this for everyone, including people that love living in small towns. Queer folks are everywhere including places like this and they love them. 🤷🏻‍♂️ If it’s not for you.

      @@queermoney I appreciate all the work and effort y'all have put forward. But, I am too hesitant to move into potentially hostile territory. My sister-in-law is eager for us to retire to Ashville, NC. Lovely, gay friendly, etc. But, what happens the moment you step out of town? You are in an enemy state. Ditto for Austin -- love it, but as a "Recovering Texan," I know too well what awaits me beyond the city limits. But, THANK YOU very much for a terrific set of videos.

      No, not necessarily. Just following the #s. The warmer locations are either super expensive or super unwelcoming of LGBTQ+ folks.

    All very cold and snowy winters or tornados.

    • @queermoney
      @queermoney  3 місяці тому

      Yep. Nice climate rarely equals affordable unless you’re in AL, AR, MS, LA, TX or FL, which we know the track record those states have with the LGBTQ community over the pst several years.
