Saw Roy @ Mothers in Erdington. He sang one line of “Oh dear me what a terrible drag” then said ‘That’s enough of that!’ and played for about two hours!” I was @ the Blind Faith Gig in the Park. Also saw EB somewhere or other. Great time to be young! (Still am @ 74)
@cliffhughes6010 He's not passed on, yet! He's in Clonakilty County Cork enjoying his retirement. Roy was a big part of my life, from my late teens onward. I'm now 73, and still play his music regularly. Definitely a wizard, a true star - as the Runt says.
Also.... ! I remember Pink Floyd at Hyde Park premiering Atom Heart Mother. The Edgar Broughton Band had played earlier, so came stamping through the crowd very aggressively - talk about "heavy friends" that you try to avoid!! Sobered-up very quickly! Happy days❤peace and love
I recall seeing EBB at Essex University (I think), back in the day. I'm sure we were chanting Out Demons Out for 20 minutes or so! As you say David, Happy Days.
What a Great Live Band Quintessence Were, Alan Was Such An Amazing Guitarist.. And The Edgar Broughton Band...Did They Ever Do a Bad Show. ? ...Happy Days
An Australian on a visit, I saw and enjoyed Quintessence at the Wheeley Music Festival in 1971. British rock bands, even the minor ones, were way ahead of Australia's acts 😊.
I went to Weeley Festival exactly that same year 1971 and there were some dancers like these ones there. I hitched hiked with my German girlfriend, there and back to Germany. I saw Rod Stewart and Mungo Jerry, Gerry? And I think Medicine Head too. 😊
That second Edgar Broughton number where he’s appears to be playing a flange pedal manually is interesting, with his “crazy preacher vibe” in full swing!
I remember being at a very low key Hyde Park freebie which featured Edgar Broughton I think on the back of a lorry, with a "Blackhill Enterprises* banner? I might be misremembering, .......
Al Stewart could have either benefited greatly or greatly suffered from performing in the midst of those bands. Which one was it? Who out there was there and can answer that question?
I wasn't at this particular event but I do remember that almost every festival at that time started with the Third Ear Band so I would be very surprised if they weren't playing. The device that Edgar Broughton is fiddling with sounds like an early version of a Theramin, later made famous by the Osmonds, Jimmy Page and the often brilliant John Ottway.
It's just a simple transistor oscillator kit or homemade build from an electronics mag article popular then, you could get them at radio shack etc. Not a theramin, which is freq controlled by capacitance. This is just knobs and buttons/switches. Oh and the 60s would not be "early" for a theramin, which was from the 1920s, you should wiki it, very interesting history there
followup reply - I have now learned that it was a commercially made product called the WEM HAND-FULL synth oscillator effects box. Basically same thing as I said (transistor oscillator box), but a more sophisticated commercial product version.
I attended the later Hyde Park concerts - Blind Faith, Stones, Canned Heat, Grand Funk Railroad. Regret missing the Family, Fairport Convention, Eclection concert. The Edgar Broughton Band were regulars at most open air concerts at this time, I think the Deviants morphed into The Pink Fairies, saw them at High Wycombe town hall, not a great performance sadly.
Great to see “Jesus” dancing during “Out Demons Out”, he was ubiquitous at every show till about 79… also to see The Deviants in full flow…. Any German speakers out there can translate what he was saying about the Hells Angels ? I’m sure it was uncomfortable for him to see those Nazi helmets…
Very little. With his four-and -one-half octave vocal range Don van Vliet would have blown Edgar Broughton off the stage. If still in doubt, I would recommend the Zappa and Beefheart 'Orange Claw Hammer' video.

@@Carl-LaFong-7261 Well - we seem to be enjoying some standard UA-cam weirdness with disappearing comments ! I saw your original comment this morning and replied. To sum up briefly :- With your help I tracked down some photos of the Handfull, thanks very much for the tip off ! I also mentioned that I got a great nostalgia buzz from seeing the WEM p.a. cabinets in this vid .............
That annoying so-called dancing or whatever it was used to bug me, especially because I was usually stuck behind one of them. They rightfully called it idiot dancing back then.
Live music ain't a spectator sport for everyone. Do what you wanna do, and let people dance if they wanna shake their arse! So judgy, sittin' there on yr hands. Wot's da name of your band, poser?
Edgar Broughton had a crazy preachers vibe. It fit perfectly with his music and lyrics.
I went to all of them just hoping to see Roy Harper. I caught him several times. Wonderful 😊
The old cricketer has left the crease. RIP

17:11 Famous "Jesus" Jellett dancing onstage while the Edgar Broughton Band play.
😬 classic

I went to this. I remember Edgar Broughton, the Deviants and Quintessence but I dont remember Al Stewart and I am sure Soft Machine also played
there was SM footage on youtube too
I remember being at a very low key Hyde Park freebie which featured Edgar Broughton I think on the back of a lorry, with a "Blackhill Enterprises* banner? I might be misremembering, .......
@@snapperduck Quite likely. The EBB and the Deviants popped up at most free events at that time
Al Stewart could have either benefited greatly or greatly suffered from performing in the midst of those bands.
Which one was it? Who out there was there and can answer that question?
Yeah for Soft Machine
great interviews with them I did on Psychedelic Baby magazine web. Saw both of them live elsewhere. Classics of the time
Love In The Rain by EBB, still fabulous after all these years!
except it's just the ending of purple haze repeated over and over
How times have changed,at now 78 this looks so strange to me now,and it was something back then aged 22 that I couldn’t get enough off

Can you picture trump at this rally?
The lad eating the lolly pop made me smile
Edgar and his WEM handful!
Spot the good looking young trippers, the ones standing up showing off, lol
😬 yeah baby
from18:57 clear picture of Jack Henry Moore with the sony Portapac camera
I’m pretty sure I was at this one … lol
Far out man!
I remember a guy we called Jesus always dancing on his own at the front , he was at every festival he would always turn up,,
The second song @ 2:46 has a kind of a Captain Beefheart vibe.
Used to watch Edgar Broughton at The Wake Arms, Epping.

Mick Farren, God love him.
Mick Farren put out a couple of very strange albums, which I owned, but disappeared long ago. Anyone know if they were ever reissued?
Would have loved to see some footage of the original King Crimson
King Crimson stole the show from the Stones in my opinion.
@@jamesharris9029 Spot on there Crimson were brilliant.
@@jamesharris9029yeah I was there also and they were definitely ushering in a new genre of music
The crowd seemed a bit quiet with their "Out Demons Out " I remember it much louder at other Edgar Broughton gigs.
Young Mr Stewart, 9:24

They were Inspiration for Black Sabbath.
No fats no tatts! Great to see what is basically the Pink Fairies as the Deviants
Up the Pinks
E eu fora disso tudo e sem falar Inglês.......Eu era bem jovem.....
Was this the concert where Jefferson Airplane were supposed to play but did not get a work permit?
Looks like some of the audience are having an epileptic fit.
That's what was known as " idiot dancing " !
There may have been some substances involved.
Such idiotic behaviour 😂
What could Edger Broughton have accomplished alongside Captain Beefheart?
Very little. With his four-and -one-half octave vocal range Don van Vliet would have blown Edgar Broughton off the stage. If still in doubt, I would recommend the Zappa and Beefheart 'Orange Claw Hammer' video.
The day Lennon left The Beatles...
Good riddance to the great scouse ego

So self-indulgent and inconsiderate. Even those flying on acid should not forget their manners.

Wasn’t Al Stewart ‘s voice annoying ?
