this was excellent!!! thank you! I've been shooting manual for a long time and thought it was the best way to shoot but lately i've been looking for a way to have better control and this video really shows me that having complete control all the time can also be a downfall, so allowing the very expensive camera to do some of the work is not a bad thing, NOT AT ALL. First I want to say, Thank You! Your video was very informative and easy to fallow. I only have one question about your f4 & f2.8 suggestions for your portraits. I know that getting good Bokeh outdoors is one good reason for shooting wide open with portraits, but was there any other reason? In the past, I have had a Love / Hate relationship with shallow depth of field. My Nikon D850's autofocus is "hit or mis" with shallow depth of field in studio. Outdoors, no problem. Sometimes my modeling Lights aren't bright enough for my Autofocus. For portraits in the studio, I have had to mark the floor for my subjects and have them sit for careful focusing and keep my studio ambient lights bright while my ISO is low in order to keep my cameras autofocus working consistently. So I end up shooting f5.6 - f11

James, I really liked this video and got a lot out of it. I did, however, think that there were 2 things that you could have at least mentioned in the landscape portion. Those would be that when using a tripod turn Steady Shot off and when using such a slow shutter speed to use a wired or wireless remote or a 2 second timer to reduce camera shake. Sky too light, shadows too dark. do I need to move up to an DSLR to correct this?
Hey, recently I have been trying to film my band performing in fairly low light. My a7 iv work great on auto but the aperture is always auto set to 1.4. It looks great but most of the shot is out of focus. I would like to keep the quality but have the whole band in focus. Do you have any advise? thanks
I noticed during the portrait portion, as you moved the camera around from light to dark areas your shuttle speed stayed constant at 1/125. The challenge for me in Aperture priority has been the constantly changing shutter speed. Is there some specific setting that locks the shutter speed in? I set my iso min ss and all yet my ss is all over the map usually too low to freeze slight movements or compensate for shake common in portrait/wedding/event work. Thanks for the vid.🙏🏾💪🏾

Hey Mikey. Thanks so much, man! Great question, and sure Aperture Priority works just fine with a manual lens. In fact it makes it easier on you, as you set your aperture and the camera takes care of the exposure for you. Then you can turn your attention to focusing well. Make sense? See I was already using manual but had never used aperture priority or shutter priority and I found I was missing shots sometimes especially in faster moving subjects or fleeting moments so I wanted to learn more about it...
I am a little bit confused. You said in aperture mode, we just adjust the aperture, but then, the ISO was adjusted as well .To me this is more a "manual mode" rather than Av mode.
No problem, to get the best results from Aperture priority please see below. Just one thing to bear in mind when setting a minimum shutter speed on your camera Generally speaking, using the standard rule of thumb is to make the minimum shutter speed equal to the maximum focal length of your lense when hand- holding your camera. For example, if you are shooting with a 200mm lens then you want to keep your minimum shutter speed at 1/200 sec or above to avoid any blur occurring from camera shake. ua-cam.com/video/OTTGI6ZEsZM/v-deo.html
Great tips James thank you, When I am in APriority, my ISO indoors routinely goes to 25600. I dont want noisy pics. They are also over exposed. What am I doing wrong? I can play with exposure comp. but why must I? I thought these cameras were "smart."

@@JamesLavish Thank you, James.
@@Del-Canada Also let me know if you want any thoughts on type of camera or lens options for easier tactile controls, dials, etc...
@@JamesLavish It's nice to get positive vibes. I wouldn't normally share this something personal but my dad just died an hour ago. So anything positive I am absorbing. Thank you for the info and interactions and take care, James.
@@Del-Canada Oh man, I lost my Dad recently, too. I'm so sorry. Stay strong and positive, and let me know if I can help with your photography journey. Keep on, Del! ✌️
Is there any alternative if the camera do not provide Aperture priority ? For example mobile gadget such as Sony Xperia i5
Thank You.
Thank you and I am excited for the upcoming videos
You're welcome! ✌
Just the perfect start to finish instruction that i was searching for!..have you Done another for using Nd-Grad filters?? Or Going to?.. many thanks... instant-sub!!!
Awesome, so happy to hear that! And thanks so much for the sub, I really appreciate it! So, I have not done one on grad NDs yet, but may in the future. Shutter Priority tutorial is coming v soon, though, and that will include some info on variable NDs!
I am new and your explanation is the best I have found on youtube.
Thanks so much! I'm super happy it helped!✌
Thats exactly what im thinking rite now.. great and helpful video, James
@@mahardyantikusumaningtyas1753 Thanks so much Mahardyanti. I really appreciate that!
Great video, thanks.
great explanation of aperture priority mode!
Thanks so much, I'm glad it helped!
Awesome video
See I was already using manual but had never used aperture priority or shutter priority and I found I was missing shots sometimes especially in faster moving subjects or fleeting moments so I wanted to learn more about it...
I am a little bit confused. You said in aperture mode, we just adjust the aperture, but then, the ISO was adjusted as well .To me this is more a "manual mode" rather than Av mode.
I'm also confused. can someone elaborate for us.

Fantastic! Thank you.
You're welcome Owen and thank you, too!
When taking outdoor portraits in aperture priority with auto ISO will you get consistent exposures in a series of photos shot in the same location?
nope. ISO will bounce around and so will your shutter speed
Great tips James thank you, When I am in APriority, my ISO indoors routinely goes to 25600. I dont want noisy pics. They are also over exposed. What am I doing wrong? I can play with exposure comp. but why must I? I thought these cameras were "smart."

I've been shooting Av for twelve years. Mainly portraits.
Thanks for this valuable information!
You're super welcome! ✌️
Awesome video, I need a good tripod,
The video sound is pretty good, beyond my imagination
Thank you
If ISO and shutter speed are then automatic in Av, why do I have dark photos that need exposure compensation to be changed.
