Do you ever use Aperture Priority? If so, when and how??
Woah. Moon shot.. I love Luna (moon).
Astrophotography. 🤩
@@BOMBZTV Thanks dude!
@@JamesLavish hope you can include the actual photos taken. It is good for the tutorial you showed us about the zebras. But i can't see the difference coz it was shown from the camera display only. I recommend a split screen for comparison of the actual shots you made. Anyhow, great content as always. Looking forward to your instagram tutorial or lesson. I was really curious about it. I've seen those on some mobile phone camera pro settings. Keep it up! 😉👍
@@BOMBZTV Ah good point, I'll add them to the description later when I can get back to the computer! 👍
I have a lot to learn and I need to watch this a few times !! THANK YOU
Man, amazing explanation! Improved my photos by a lot and I finally understand why some of my photos were blown out! Thanks :D
That's awesome to hear! Well done, Ognjen!
Came across your video. I just picked up my camera a few weeks ago. I have been watching a lot of video’s. There is a lot of information out there. This video help a lot. I have been shooting in manual, but then there are times I have to go to auto. Still learning long ways to go. Very good video thank you.
First of all, thank you. This was the BEST video, and I have watched many. You did a fantastic job making it very plain. I never thought I would actually get it, but it makes perfect sense. I was actually typing notes as you were going only to discover at the very end you offer a cheat sheet! Great energy! Crystal clear explanation, just an all and all great video. Thanks a million!
Forgot to mention, I've been doing photography for 5 years now with some really great equipment (Sony a6000, Sony a6400, and Nikon 5600) Various lenses). Never knew what one single button's purpose was. It was all point and shoot. A couple of months I got the Sony a7iv and decided to actually learn everything about it to really maximize my photography. This video was super helpful! Thank you again.
Very straight to the point. Great video.
great explanation of aperture priority mode!
Thanks so much, I'm glad it helped!
Just new sub. How to remove the blurry background?
Hey Mommy Ivy, thanks so much, I really appreciate that! So, do you mean the shallow depth of field? If so, just set your aperture to at least f8 and up to f16 to get a sharp photo all the way from front to back. I have a video all about sharpness you can check out for deeper understanding!
I will i will try to find it thanks great tutotial anyway 👍
@@MommyIvy You're welcome! ✌️
thanks mate, but for some reason after changing to aperature priority on my A7ii, i could not change the shutter speed. It just would not allow it. can you let me know what i am doing wrong?
the picture of the girl is misleading, in the second picture her head is partially covering the sun, not saying that AV is not important, that in some instances it can help a picture look a lot better, but for people that don't make a living as photographers is not that important.
I just picked up photography around 6 weeks ago. This is the first video I have watched for tutorials (was learning everything with just the camera and I in unison) and sub’d right after watching this vid; not only because of your knowledge, also because you are genuine. Thank you!
Where is the cheat sheet? I know it's been 2 years. Have you taken it away?
New to photograpy (3 months in). This video really helped me in the fact that you actually did a practical photo sesison which was a great help. Thanks.
Hey Lisa, you are super welcome. So happy it helped!✌
Hey, recently I have been trying to film my band performing in fairly low light. My a7 iv work great on auto but the aperture is always auto set to 1.4. It looks great but most of the shot is out of focus. I would like to keep the quality but have the whole band in focus. Do you have any advise? thanks
I use a canon rebel SL2. I use a 50mm f1.8 lens (Yongnuo). AV mode really helps with getting the blur and nice focus on the subject. I was always told to shoot manual but I really like AV so I don't have to spend time with the ISO and the shutter speed. (maybe lazy LOL)
Not lazy, smart!! I use Manual sometimes, Shutter Priority sometimes, but Aperture Priority mostly now!
So once you set your Iso the camera won't bump it up? I don't wanna deal with noise in post when it comes to portraits
you've got yourself a new sub.
just got my dslr and I was stressed now I am at ease :)
Thanks so much, Lesedi! I'm so happy it helped!✌️
You was the most helpful and explained everything a person needed to learn I never write comments But this was just what I needed to know I am a up coming Photographer and I am always willing to learn Thank you for Helping millions of people across the 🌎 .🙌🏾 #Danceking704
I am a little bit confused. You said in aperture mode, we just adjust the aperture, but then, the ISO was adjusted as well .To me this is more a "manual mode" rather than Av mode.
I'm also confused. can someone elaborate for us.
No problem, to get the best results from Aperture priority please see below.
Just one thing to bear in mind when setting a minimum shutter speed on your camera Generally speaking, using the standard rule of thumb is to make the minimum shutter speed equal to the maximum focal length of your lense when hand- holding your camera. For example, if you are shooting with a 200mm lens then you want to keep your minimum shutter speed at 1/200 sec or above to avoid any blur occurring from camera shake.

this was excellent!!! thank you! I've been shooting manual for a long time and thought it was the best way to shoot but lately i've been looking for a way to have better control and this video really shows me that having complete control all the time can also be a downfall, so allowing the very expensive camera to do some of the work is not a bad thing, NOT AT ALL. So thank you for this video, very helpful.
Ммм❤😊😊😅😅❤❤❤😊😊😊
Tri-pod ? ........... mine sits in the corner crying for attention ........ haven't used it in years .......... I agree with the Aperture Priority though and monitor the Shutter duration and subject motion ....... ;-)
Hello. I’ve been doing a lot of photography over the years. And since I don’t do it frequently I forget a lot of the settings. And now w those new camera like my Sony A7rlll so complicated. If you don’t practice a lot. I also do a lot in manual but now moving more to street photography. I’m trying to figure out best setting.
I will try your technique of a priority. F4 speed to 125. Since hand held and auto iso. Will see. Any other tip for street p..?
Thanks John
Excellent .. thank you... I've been into photography around 10yrs.. started on a Canon Rebel always used manual... graduated to an a7II 4yrs ago.. man the settings were sooooo complex... I now have the a7III... been practicing and have recently had an epiphany mastering the ISO... game changer for me... but there's so much to learn... so the S... A... P... buttons were alien.. however now I have gained more confidence looking at these options are my next challenge in my evolution....
I've got a point shoot Nikon , P100.. basic. I like A mode, staring out hand held street landscape (trees buildings, sidewalks etc) and some street "moments" photography. however the bright sky in California seems to blowout (above the horizon). Sky too light, shadows too dark. do I need to move up to an DSLR to correct this?
Very good and informative video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Question? What if I wanted to use a flash on top of the camera(not the pop up flash). Is it possible to still do Aperture Priority mode and add a flash for more light? Am using a Panasonic G85 camera... Any and all recommendations are greatly appreciated.
I bought a bunch of production lights and very happy with it. It lets me be more in control with my video settings. ISO and fps is A-Ok, aperture is where i was confused on. Thanks!
I would love to get your Cheat Sheets for Aperture Priority and Shutter Priority. I first learned about you and watched several of your videos yesterday. You have simplified the process in your description, but would love to have the Cheat Sheets to refer to in the field. Thanks!
Great video! Thanks :)
Hi James, thank you so much for a wonderful video. I never got the PDF sheet after filling the form... 😞
If you're on a tripod why would you use any priority mode??? You're sacrificing total control of the camera. Priority modes are for changing situations where the light and/or velocity changes.
Thank you for this video. I’m learning quite a lot. Just one question when I put my camera in AV mode what about the switch on my lens? Do I keep it on manual or auto focus? Thanks
ever since i changed my ISO and that on my sony a5100
i started having problems with my camera theres a long processing time after taking the photo
and it works only works when iI use auto ISO
can you help me out to fix this some how
I did not see where you found the histogram so quickly and easily. i did not see how you improved shadow detail vs highlight detail. I want best highlight detail for an eclipse of the Sun.
What about timelapse what would be considered for daytime photography I'd consider that aperture will adjust to sun light and to darkness
Photography is not an easy thing hole life you just try to lern lern and lerning Boss nice tutorial THANKS
Hi James just found your channel i found it very helpfull. I am from the Uk my passion in photography is Motorsport particularly race cars .
Due to the pandemic i cant travel to the race tracks .
So i have got into landscape photography its a lot harder than it looks i feel like iam a beginner again
I have used your advise and used Av instead of manual and got some better results thank you looking forward to more of your videos .
Awesome to hear Richard, more camera tutorials to come soon! ✌
your beginning comparison photos are trash honestly. in one picture, the subject isn’t covering the sun and in the other she is. obviously the pictures are going to look different. has nothing to do with what mode you were in.
you literally just had her head cover the sun. not even gonna waste time watching the rest of the video.
I like how basic and not a lot of salt and pepper on something as simple as aperture mode, very well explained! thank you
Thanks so much, that's super appreciated and great to meet you here! ✌
Thank you so much for that guide, I’m new to photography, it started with a hobby of mine taking pictures of my mini:) MINI worldwide sew my photos and tomorrow I’m taking pictures for them, you helped me so much I really appreciate it
That's so awesome with MINI, Adi. Happy to hear to and you're super welcome! ✌
How do I get that minimum shutter speed in my menu? Great video, learned allot but I’m unable to get that minimum shutter speed in my aperture mode when I click on that function button
If ISO and shutter speed are then automatic in Av, why do I have dark photos that need exposure compensation to be changed.
Is there a specific metering I should use when doing street photography and for wedding types of photos?
james great video but how do i get my camera to do what you had your camera doing that was unique ya see. how you was moving around and the numbers was changing how do i get my camera to do that
Can I ask - if I’m doing a UA-cam video - I set to aperture priority - I want my f to be 1/1.6 but then don’t I need to shutter speed to stay at 2x the fps rather than moving around?
I've been shooting Av for twelve years. Mainly portraits.
How do you set your speed light/ flash with aperture priority mode?
Is it possible to setup minimum shutter speed in Aperture Priority with A6600?
Another thing that’s helpful is to use a remote, Amazon sells them fairly cheap.
When taking outdoor portraits in aperture priority with auto ISO will you get consistent exposures in a series of photos shot in the same location?
nope. ISO will bounce around and so will your shutter speed
This mode really makes you see your camera as a helpful friend. Thanks so much man!
Just subscribed. Your explanations are great, simple and very easy to understand. You are one of my tp 3 that I frequently watch. Super job!
Hi very good video struggling to find the PDF Thanks
James, I really liked this video and got a lot out of it. I did, however, think that there were 2 things that you could have at least mentioned in the landscape portion. Those would be that when using a tripod turn Steady Shot off and when using such a slow shutter speed to use a wired or wireless remote or a 2 second timer to reduce camera shake. I realize that these points are not part of the main story (Aperture Priority), but could have been mentioned in a second or 2. But, other than that, great info!
Hey Dan, thanks so much for the kind words. And I agree on both points, I do make sure to tell viewers exactly that in my Tips for Sharp Landscape Photos video. It’s definitely a balance of how much info to unload in each tutorial! 😉✌️
what mode are you shooting in for the studio shot of you talking in this video?
Seriously one of the best tutorials incredibly well spoken and brilliantly outlines well done
Hi, tried to sign up for the cheat sheet and it seems your server is not sending out 😞
So essentially you just set the aperture and let the camera take care of the rest?
I need to learn shutter speed other than that I'm getting better at taking pictures.
Link didn’t work, I’m afraid for the cheat sheet.
i put my name and email and the cheat sheet didn’t show up in my email:(
Where is the link mentioned for pdf file to put on your phone?
Just the perfect start to finish instruction that i was searching for!..have you Done another for using Nd-Grad filters?? Or Going to?.. many thanks... instant-sub!!!
Awesome, so happy to hear that! And thanks so much for the sub, I really appreciate it! So, I have not done one on grad NDs yet, but may in the future. Shutter Priority tutorial is coming v soon, though, and that will include some info on variable NDs!
Aperture priority mode is also good for video??
Just starting out. Seems like i understand the how to but zero experience when to use. Great tips.
Hey Eddie, thanks so much and great to hear! You can use Aperture Priority pretty much whenever you don't really need to control shutter speed carefully (i.e., slowing or freezing movement...etc)
Awesome video, I need a good tripod,
How can i download the pdf?tnx
John here in Pa & relatively new to digital photography. I do love it just haven't found my style liking yet, soon I hope😊
Hey John, it's great to hear you love it, and that's pretty much all that matters right now. I would just take as many photos as you can and keep trying new things. You will find your style! Welcome aboard! ✌️
First I want to say, Thank You! Your video was very informative and easy to fallow. I only have one question about your f4 & f2.8 suggestions for your portraits. I know that getting good Bokeh outdoors is one good reason for shooting wide open with portraits, but was there any other reason? In the past, I have had a Love / Hate relationship with shallow depth of field. My Nikon D850's autofocus is "hit or mis" with shallow depth of field in studio. Outdoors, no problem. Sometimes my modeling Lights aren't bright enough for my Autofocus. For portraits in the studio, I have had to mark the floor for my subjects and have them sit for careful focusing and keep my studio ambient lights bright while my ISO is low in order to keep my cameras autofocus working consistently. So I end up shooting f5.6 - f11
Canera make u sleep ghost Allan
2:31 videos? I have an issue with light changing on me while I am doing something (like reeling in fish, casing out lines, etc). Changing settings every 2 minutes while recording isn't feasible.
That can definitely be an issue. For video with lots of changing exposure, I would actually recommend using shutter priority (with shutter set to 2x the frame rate: i.e., 1/50th for 34fps) and maximum ISO that you feel comfortable with on your camera (I made an ISO video for some more info there, if you want). That way, you video is smooth and the light should be a bit more consistent if you let the camera decide aperture for you. If the light is bright, add an ND filter to help retain a shallow depth of field. otherwise the camera will just default to a small F-stop (f16 or f22) and this will make it look less cinematic. Make sense?
Great Stuff man!
Exactly what I was looking for. Just subscribed looking forward to more of your videos. I'm new-ish to photography, using a G85. Question, can you use aperture priority with manual lenses? Or does that kind of defeat the purpose if the camera doesn't have the electrical connection to the lens?
Hey Mikey. Thanks so much, man! Great question, and sure Aperture Priority works just fine with a manual lens. In fact it makes it easier on you, as you set your aperture and the camera takes care of the exposure for you. Then you can turn your attention to focusing well. Make sense? That G85 is an awesome camera, especially for video! You will love it!
Hi
Great video, i recently got the Sony mk4
Awesome camera. I’m normally an Auto person but I’m teaching myself the big M mode. I been shooting birds in flight, some or ok but most ore blurt. Hard to pan at the speed some fly at. Any tips?
All exposure decisions require the same cognitive reasoning, deciding first what is most important, aperture or Shutter speed? If you cannot get the combination of variables desired, alter the i.s.o.
Manually changing either one of these and any given light problems can be effectively resolved. Fast and simple. With the touch of a button or dial you can change everything like white balance,Shutter,aperture,i.s.o., ai-servo,burst rate and more all in manual mode. Auto modes can be fooled by your meter whether your talking auto shutter, aperture or i.s.o.
hello Mr, I have canon 70D, I just have the aperture that goes to 4.0, and how I can turn it to 1.4? please help, thanks
Sorry, man, but I can't focus on all the greats tips with that annoying music that's constantly pumping in the background.
How do I get that PDF?
Is there any alternative if the camera do not provide Aperture priority ? For example mobile gadget such as Sony Xperia i5
I noticed during the portrait portion, as you moved the camera around from light to dark areas your shuttle speed stayed constant at 1/125.
The challenge for me in Aperture priority has been the constantly changing shutter speed. Is there some specific setting that locks the shutter speed in? I set my iso min ss and all yet my ss is all over the map usually too low to freeze slight movements or compensate for shake common in portrait/wedding/event work.
Thanks for the vid.🙏🏾💪🏾
Excellent explanation
The second photo of the curly hair girl is not the same angle as the first one, one is covering the sun and the other let’s sunlight directly into the camera. Not a good example.
I'm a newbie and recently bought an a7iv and a G master lens. Found your video very useful!
I've set me minimum shutter speed to 1/125 but as I increased the aperature; the shutter speed still drops? My ISO is at auto as well.
@JamesLavish Very good video, good delivery making it easy to understand. I am new to photography, and have been experimenting with all modes. I actually find manual mode, but with auto ISO on, just as easy. I always hand hold the camera so find having control on the shutter speed and Aperture helpful
Thank you so much
Thank you, kudos!
thank you very much sir. I just got my a7iv and i'm a beginner.. You video helped me a lot.
Thank you sirr
I know this is probably a dumb question but how did u set the zebra lines setting on photography mode.. I only see it on cinematic mode
I really love the intro sound on your bumper videos. As a guitar player, i do love it. So when people hear that note, they knew that it was you😁✌️📸🎶
Thanks man, I really appreciate that and wish I could play the guitar! 🙏✌
James, tks much I know its older but going through some to brush off the Covid rust and fell on this. Great refresher or a starter for someone. Nice style and presentation. Will ck for some more. Tks much.
The model in your photo example moved in front of the light source, so using auto or aperture priority for that shot is no different
Very well explained. Down to earth. Thanks so much for the video.
Thank I seen many videos where they take you around the bushes and not even explain what the title was . Thank for going straight to the point 😊!!
Thanks for not beating around the bush. So helpful!
See I was already using manual but had never used aperture priority or shutter priority and I found I was missing shots sometimes especially in faster moving subjects or fleeting moments so I wanted to learn more about it...
Thank you 😊
Thank You.
You got a new sub. I spent most of last night wondering if I should walk away from it all decided to prioritise learning my stuff found this and I cant wait to get back out there!
Thank you
Does the aperture mode work for studio photography as well with a flash mounted on the camera?
