    You are my inspiration. Watching you on Alone made me feel this need to be independent, especially as I am recently single. I want to explore the world and adventure on my own terms and not rely on another. Thank you for these videos on UA-cam and thank you for the immense inspiration.

    A couple days ago, I was telling a mutual friend how, of all the seasons of Alone that I have seen (missed 2 & 5), I have always had a low mutter of 'armchair criticisms' for literally all of the contestants and their choices... Except for you! 🤓 When you're on screen, I just watch and listen. Your instincts and intuition are *dialed in*, and you speak with such eloquence!

    You really killed it on alone your archery was super on point your snare game was amazing and your determination was insane after 2 episodes I knew you would only go out on your own terms your a beast 72 days in the Arctic is absolutely insane especially without surveying the land first and with all the restrictions you had.

      @SaltyDad Stop the equality nonsense. Woniya was all the more impressive because she did do what 99.9% of women could not, all but one man on Alone. There's a reason far more men are on the show, in spec ops, etc...That's not sexist, it's a greater accomplishment and compliment to Woniya to say she's a woman above women. She earned that respect. ['If everyone is special, then no one is.']. Celebrate great effort by special souls, so others will see their example, rise up and challenge themselves to be great. All men and women are NOT equal. That's what this show is all about, right? Well done, Woniya.

    • @andrewkeats8247
      @andrewkeats8247 4 роки тому +1

      @SaltyDad BC like it or not there's still many who see women as the fairer sex (and some women prefer to be thought of like that) and so, thinking of a woman as being self-sufficient in the wild is still something that many men are not used to. It's not a sexist comment. It is a comment based on the outdated, but longstanding view of male and female roles.

    • @MrGentlebutfirm
      @MrGentlebutfirm 4 роки тому +1

      @@andrewkeats8247 Don't be dumb. Much more men are self-sufficient in the wild than you will find women. That is not sexism. It is a fact. Fair to respect the tough women like Woniya that more..

    Alone: Most the time I've thought about the women (and most the men) on the show, 'what are you doing there? Did you think it was going to be scout camp?'
    But the whole family was cheering for you, darlin'. Your attitude was courageous and worthy of victory. Heck, my 21 year old son is a survivalist, thru-hiker, and soon to be an Air Force SERE instructor, and my wife was like, 'Hey, Bud, there's your future wife.' (only minor age difference, lol). You've heard a lot of that by now, I'm sure. Beautiful frontier women who loves the wilderness, self-reliance, her mom - - the real deal, anti-city girl... What's not to like? Well done, girl. You did good and earned the respect of even us OLD men.

Hanging in there a few more days wasn't an option for me, so I chose to go on my own terms but my own choice and on my own 2 feet instead of against my will. Nice hack on the Silky. The spine on Silky saws also make fantastic scrapers for the ferro rod. One point on the Katana boy compared to the Big boy is the katana has a wider kerf and hence uses more energy to cut with, yes it cuts fast but a thinner Silky big boy cuts even easier. I also don't like folding blades, fixed for edc. Oh, wire can be easily cut by pounding it with a rock against another rock, just flatten the wire which weakens it and then it simply will break with a quick few bends over the pounded flat spot.

      Silkies are certainly top of the line products, no question! It was the back end of the saw i used to get through the ice though, to be clear. I doubt that the narrow tip of the saw would hold up to that kind of use for long, especially as metal get more brittle at low temperatures

    I love Moraknivs! They come out if M the box sharp enough to shave with. When dull, 6 swipes on a porcilin sharpener will take it back to orak sharpness. The Scandinavian hone makes bbn it a all around good work knife. Oh yea, you can't beat the price for $15.00 or $20.00. I have 3 and use it for trapping and skinning mostly. For a survival knife, you can't beat it.

    I wonder if it might've been possible to craft a stone tool to do some ice-bashing (like a heavy club/axe, essentially). Seems like the guys who used the axe for smashing through the ice were largely doing so for it's heft and impact, not so much for the sharpness.

    Man do I wish I could afford a Katanaboy. I like the smaller ones, but theres only so much you can do with 12-14" saws.. So I carry bahco bowsaw blades. Super easy to make a bow on site, but a folder around that size would be real nice and easier to carry from camp to the cut site.
    An alternative to a carbide striker is a needle file. Throws good sparks but also sharpens too. With carbide as a sharpener, I highly recommend fixing it somewhere and then running the knife on it like a bench stone. Holding it in your hand and running it down the knife is a good recipe for a real bad slice. Just fix the carbide to a log and use it like a bench sharpener.
    My needle file I wrapped in a wet cloth and frose fot a heat sink (to not anneal the file part) then with a torch I heated the handle and put a loop in it.
    Carbide, or needle file, either is a great multi purpose choice.

    Amazing job on Alone, Woniya! Was rooting for you. Small recommendation- if you sign up for Amazon Associates you can add links to the products and make a commission each time someone buys them through your link. Might be a good way to monetize videos like this! Thanks for the survival inspiration and education.

    Woniya, you're amazing and I LOVED watching you in the show!! Did you sharpen the back of the saw before the show or while you were there?

    I’m not even sure how many knives I have, but I have about a dozen that I’d use for woods use. 3 of those are Moras, and 2 Leatherman. I always have a Mora on my side and one of the Leathermen on my belt. Good choices. Good reasoning.

    The limit on number of items has to be a bummer. I'm sure that forces some tough choices, but the gap I saw was the lack of a heavy enough knife to take the hard use, like batoning. Maybe a BK2 or Esee 5 paired with the Mora, but then that takes up two items.

    You did very well on Alone and I was impressed with your resolve. You really should have brought an axe as you mentioned. A proper 3/4 axe would have served you well provided your familiar and skilled in axe use. Axes can take the role of a lot of the functions of a knife as they can be very sharp if maintained (with your leatherman) and in the ice it would have been key. The axe, the saw, and the multitool compliment each other.

    Fun too see your choice of knife! I`m norwegian and here in scandinavia Mora knifes are legendary . When I was young, every man walked around with mora knife in his belt..........😀

      Yes! I have been carrying a Mora knife since I was 19! I usually use a carbon steel version, but I wanted a very study one for Alone so chose the Companion, which only comes in stainless steel. I have even had custom made knives made to the specifications of a Mora knife!

    Loved you on the show! You did really well :)
    I didn't really get why the saw is better than a bow saw for cutting. You mentioned something about the blade being of a particular type, but isn't it possible to put an equal type of blade on a bow saw and isn't the grip better on a bow saw?

    You should put amazon affiliate links in your description for all the products and then you can earn some money from it :D Just some marketing advice lol. Really enjoyed watching your progress and development and thought process on alone. You really are amazing, glad you are well and i hope the next phase of your life is just as bright and adventurous.

      I was torn about that, but I eventually did it. i got turned down by amazing after a trial because i didn't bring in enough sales. Which is great by me, honestly, because I am such an advocate of making ones own gear or supporting local stores and craftspeople as much as possible.

      thank so much. I would have needed 6 squirrel days every day, plus other food with fat, to stop losing weight in that climate, but I sure have it my beat given my location and circumstances!!
