@@talonbreck Yep exactly. Unless I am in a rush to get to another sale or something I still try to go through the entire place as you never know. For example I found a Betamax tape for $1 that sold for $40. Plus maybe all other resellers leave right away when they see the prices and don't stay to look at everything so when I show up there may still be stuff left that was overlooked.
Alot of estate sale companies do not care to sell product. They guarantee the family a small amount of money for the sale. Price everything super high and then when the sale is over they clean out the house and keep the product for themselves to sell at their eBay store thrift store or flea market. So they scam the family before they scam the public. And people have negative feelings about pickers.
if i ever pay an estate sale company, i would personally go down and look at what they price items, definitely would ask them to reduce the prices or just fire them if it’s as ridiculous as this.
I can’t imagine they sold much at that estate sale with those prices and not willing to negotiate. It’s not like a collector would even want to pay those prices.
I would avoid that Estate Sale company in the future. He could have worked with you on the DVD/VHS combos. They definitely are not reselling friendly, which we all know are their core customers.
Thanks for the ride along John ! Even though clean, good dodge on the VCR/DVD combos. Like you said, its a gamble if they work properly. Belts and drive mechs I would think are most of the issues with them. Great you ran into someone and he showed you around his items. Sales are ramping up ! Be safe, keep on pickin and taking us with you.
I only go on the last day of estate sales. The selection can be thin, but the upside being some will negotiate a better deal than last day prices if you ask nicely.
You're the nicest guy. Love watching you interact with people at yardsales. Estate sales are always too high for me. They are higher than ebay most of the time.
Unfortunately even out here in Northern California since the economy is going down the pooper, these estate sale people think they all have gold all of a sudden and want to rip you off any chance they get. Glad you put those back as you know they're a shot in the dark with those players. I would clearly avoid their sales in the future. I think the more customers that they lose the less business they will have in the future. A lot of these estate sale people need to be taught a lesson in pricing for a lot of item's.
John, you were in my neck of the woods. The estate sale was crazy priced. Tyler has awesome yard sales. He also sets up during the trenton yard sales and has a ton of stuff. I will be setting up 3 streets over from him.
I’ll never understand estate sales pricing things at full market value. Just to end up having to toss it out, put it in storage or donate it after the sale anyway. Some money is better than no money and extra work
John made a video not too long ago about it but some people running estate sales are close to scammers. They charge their clients for the labor to sell their items and the cleaning fee of whatever that doesn't sell. They just mark up anything that is high value because they probably will sell it online, flea market or have their own physical store.
John, you humbleness is part of what makes you such a great person! I'm not uderstanding...was this an Estate sale in the first location!? For real, clearly they weren't interested in actually selling any items.
That estate sale was crazy with their prices. $200 for an oil can that is half full of dirty oil that you would most likely have to pay to get rid of? $25 for VCRs that they are not even sure if they work? I never understand people's thinking sometimes. You have a sale, which means you want/need to sell and you turn down fair offers? I think many of these estate sale companies have it in their contracts that anything that is left after the sale is done becomes property of the estate sale company. They purposefully price good items high so they don't sell. Then they can sell them and get 100% of the profit.
Totally agree, depending on the estate contract. The owner signs contract to company and they now own the contents of the house. then they have a deal where a percentage of sales goes to the owner, but they might also charge for cleaning and organizing items. so if they don't sell anything, they can keep the items and charge the owner a cleanout fee. But also they price things high and do 50% on the last day. Interesting to see what would be left over.
You think that estate sale was one of those companies that will hold the sale, then buy whatever is left for pennies on the dollar so they can resell it themselves?
Yeah, that estate sale looks to me like someone did their research and for the most part wanted top dollar instead of just getting rid of stuff and make a little money.
The guy should have tested the VCRs DVD players or whatever they are before he started asking the amount of money for it and he won't budge I think that's very unprofessional you should just go to a different estate sale or whatever I wouldn't even waste my time with that place
I know this was an overpriced Estate sale like usual in your area, but always look at those measuring tools in the garage for the brand name Starrett and Mitutoyo on calipers, micrometers, and protractors. It's a shame these companies do this to the seller. My area actually has live auctions, so there's no price gouging by the estate sales companies.
Check how many active listings there are for an item let’s say it’s 100. Then click “sold items” to get how many have sold in the last 90 days. Let’s say that number is 50. That item has a 50% sell through rate in 90 days. Personally, I only like messing with items that have at least a 20-25% sell through rate, ideally it’s much higher. Of course there are exceptions to this but it’s a good barometer to show you how high demand is for something.
Wow,the prices were up there at that estate sale ? Take it that was day one ? Even at that he's not getting sales from any resellers at that price level ? And wouldn't work with you at all ? Damn, each to their own scale I suppose ? Lol

The estate sales blow my mind. Most I go to they ask more than eBay prices and don’t clean up or test anything.
I would've walked out of that first sale within a couple of minutes.

Just because items are overpriced doesn’t mean they might miss something. Digging deep can payoff.
It would be interesting to go back after and see what’s still there…LOL.

Loved that old doctor's bag at the first sale!! They thought highly of their stuff there, didn't they?
The first two UK coats and the white/orange letterman were all worth over $100 each.
Got lucky this Saturday and went to an “estate” sale where everything was basically a $1 each.
