When this single hit the streets, the buzz for DMX album was unimaginable.
'97 was so jiggy, commercial and bling bling, the streets were thirstin' for some rugged hardcore again.
Facts
Rest In Peace Dog
And it lived up to the hype it’s a classic
It’s Dark and Hell is Hot hit the streets like a fucking bomb. This was the hardest shit ever when it came out.
That line "Protected By Viper stand back" was so cold when it came out, lol. The Viper was a car alarm system, they always had commercials for.
Legendary
I knew this dizzy girl who thought that it came with a real snake... smh...
@@KtotheG 🤣🤣🤣🤣 bruh
@@KtotheG for as much as they cost (to my 12,13yr old self🤦🏽♀️) when they 1st came out they should of came with a damn viper🤣🤣🤣
I’m not afraid to say when I was a kid I thought it produced a holographic viper lol!
X had the game in a chokehold back then. RIP X
If you weren’t around during this era, you have no idea how this album changed the feeling of the game. Everything went back to being gritty again. This was that ‘get punched in the face’ music.
I never questions for 1 sec that DMX wasnt about everything he rapped, his generation of rappers are why we labels todays rappers purely entertainers playing thugs
It was night and day. Rap City was never the same
I get it. X was the black sheep in the shiny suit era
Facts. X was a game changer at that time. Swizz too. Shout out to Dame Grease
DMX was just pure adrenaline on the mic...
When this came out DMX was automatically my favorite rapper at that time.
Dude came from the dirt and made himself a legend. This shit so grimey and I love it.
Can’t wait til you do It’s Dark and Hell is Hot. One of my favorite albums of all time. Dark, gutter NY shit.
Whole album is ridiculous. Very underrated
He dissed Pac on the original version, he changed it to K Solo after Pac died.
Interesting did not know that…
Facts
That “protected by viper line please stand back” was so real people cars really said that when you got too close in the 90’s alarms was crazy then because GTA was real life and not a video game then
Irv Gotti has talked in interviews about showing this video to the execs and them *hating* this video because they didn't understand how the black and white with an aggressive ass strobe was representing the infamous energy going on at The Tunnel. The execs changed their mind when the album went like 5x platinum lol
DMX had his own style rhymes flow .that nigga was Soo unique bruh. Sleep in power big 🐕
I am from HARLEM! When this track dropped, NYC as whole went CRAZY! .. every DJ in every club would play this track like 10+ times ...
"Who's Next", feat DMX;
its from the
"DJ Clue, The Professional part 2" album
🔥🔥
Great times
The energy on that track is so goddamn good
This was Xs first single off of Its Dark and He’ll is Hot and he had feature verses on tracks like 4,3, 2, 1, Money Power Respect, and 24 Hours to Live that got him hot in the streets but this was like his first introduction.
Man, I remember being like 12, waiting for X’s verse on Money Power Respect so I could say all them evil-ass bars 😂
This song was originally a diss to Tupac but he switch it a diss a rapper down with EPMD named -Solo
This the song that introduced him in VA.....memories
Man before internet was wild how these artists became upcoming stars
A) I grew up in NY in that era. Without hearing the stories you were told. They're true. That was a wild jungle until it got shut down.
B) RIP DMX YO 4 LIFE. ..It's Dark and Hell is Hot is a classic. Flesh of my flesh blood of my blood is a great album. Definitely worth checking out his catalog. Keep rocking bro like your channel man.
Yo King This uses the EPMD beat from Get The Bozack from their 2nd Album Unfunished Business, a classic LP
Dmx energy is super official. 🔥
This was originally supposed to be a 2pac diss track as well. This was during the eastcoast westcoast beef & DMX hasn't came out yet but at that point X wanted to defend New York & he was young & hungry. The album version he changed up the lyrics & removed the 2pac line after he died.
DMX - Niggas Is Up To No Good (his first music vid from 94)
This man ran the rap game from 98-03.
This was on my pre game football play list when I was a freshman in high school. Dark Man Still go hard till this day. RIP brother!
This caught 🔥🔥 when it came out. This brought the game out of the Shiny Suit Era and back to the streets.
This song kinda elevated Canadian Hip Hop a little, cause Rascalz (feat Checkmate, Choclair Kardinal Ofishall and Thrust) did a song called Northern Touch with the same beat before DMX. So when DMX did that song it brought attention to the Canadian hip hop classic. Great song by the way, a reaction to it would be dope someday
When DMX first met Snoop they hit it off.D was still waiting for his big break. Snoop said Bye and told him "Get at me Dog" DMX loved the way it sounded . Went home and wrote this song. RIP DMX
Dmx changed everything
DMX & Dirty was the COLDEST ❄💯
Oh the Tunnel was crazy. They also had a co-Ed bathroom with a DJ in the bathroom. It was a lot of smashing going on in the bathrooms too. The security was the ones that made the Tunnel wild lol. They were known for fighting and robbing people. Yes the security. My homie Alpha was head of security. He know breeds Champion/Bodyguard Cane Corso’s. Choke No Joke did a documentary on the Tunnel. I believe it’s up here on UA-cam somewhere.
Good times regardless fam!
"Protected by viper, stand back!!" The way DMX said it 😂😂😂
DMX & Cam'ron - "Pull IT" ..
Shot in the tunnel as well.. a must review.
So glad that this was my Era!!!!👑 So Proud!
This was the first DMX song I ever heard, automatically made me a lifelong fan haha!
I think you should review "Slippin" dirty version/music video if you can find it, it might help you understand some of his backstory and struggles really good track
There is no dirty version bruh. It came out like that.
@@jayc5756 wrong look it up , you think I imagined it ? 😂
@@shoryuken3305 Yeah. I thought I looked it up years ago, but couldn't find it. Cause the album version came out clean too. But ok 😎
@@jayc5756 Yeah I remember this too the album had the parental advisory sticker but slippin was still edited? who knows man
anyway here you go: ua-cam.com/video/SEeP8SdhqrU/v-deo.html
The Tunnel was the sh!t back in the day!!
Sundays,
The 1st 500 girls got in FREE..
Had to go in there DEEP..
R.I.P DarkMan X
🙏🏽
I WAS THERE !!!
@@RAA10382 Aiiiiiiight!
man this song dropped like a bomb back then... dark and hell is hot became a must own IMMEDIATELY
Yeah man, if Rykers Island was a nightclub, it woulda been The Tunnel 😂😂😂
I vividly remember when this first dropped. I was 10 years old. It was really a MOVEMENT. YOU JUST HAD TO BE THERE.
DMX's first album is severely underrated.
Most people don’t know this but song was originally a 2pac diss
Yep
I remember this dropping in 98” , then Money Power Respect !!! Omg I know we was blessed to have this dude !! RIP X !!!
RIP X a real Dawg just watched Cradle 2 the Grave and Belly loved it.
The beat on this is craaaazy. The remix features verses from all the Lox and Jada kills it like usual.
EPMD beat. Get the Bozak. Might not have spelled it right.
That wasn’t a remix, that was the original freestyle on this beat before X used the beat for a single.
@@tywayne3 *Bozack
Dmx was on another level when he came out you need to check out the entire album "it's dark and hell is Hot".
X single handedly took it back to the East.
Jigga and Nas?
@@RJS2303 DMX just came in with numbers unheard of since Biggie
G.O.A.T.
The beat is from EPMD song Get the Bozack
I cant hear it. Imma go back and listen.
This was the first single of his debut album, Its Dark & Hell Is Hot but he already had a buzz in the streets with features on other rappers songs (such as Yayo Felony’s “Watcha Gonna Do” also featuring Method Man, Mase’s “24 Hours To Live” also featuring The Lox & Black Rob, The Lox’s “Money Power & Respect” also featuring Lil Kim, “Grand Finale” also featuring Method Man & Nas from the Belly soundtrack, and LL Cool J’s “4,3,2,1” also Method Man, Redman, and Canibus). This video was actually shot while he performed live at The Tunnel. The white dude you see there at The Tunnel sticking out like a sore thumb is Lyor Cohen (then President of Def Jam Recordings). He signed X that same night after watching him perform.
First time I heard X was on a Mic Geronimo song back in '95... "Time to Build," with Jay Z and Ja Rule, as well. Ja Rule actually had the best verse on that song. X's underground singles in '96 were hot, too.
Check out Cam’ron & DMX “Pull It”
Anyone else hear the intro to the next song the second this track ends? Man, brings back memories, RIP X
PUN and DMX are my favourite mc's. TOP 5 dead or alive.
This whole album you can listen to literally every single song and not skip one it is that good. Some artists albums not always. He dissed K Solo on this song. Tyson used to walk out to the ring to his intro song on this album. Every time I hear DMX I want to run 10 miles or workout really hard in the gym. His energy and voice gets me so amped. He doesn't get his due props and he actually has bars too. At the tunnel they will jack your shit you had to watch your back there lot's of goons and grimey mofos, no joke. He sampled a song from EPMD for this song. Thanks X for leaving us with so many gems your legacy and spirit lives on RIP King, one of kind 🙏🕊
This single is the first CD i ever bought on my own as a youngin. RIP X
the tunnel down town. i believe 12th street. always leaving there with the birds and sun in your eyes. expossing you while you walk20 something blocks to penn station
Man I used to be at the Tunnel damn near every Sunday. The night they shot this video was soooooo packed that they weren’t letting just anybody in. You either had to be connected to a known crew or you had to pay a high ass admission fee. Plus I think they hit capacity that night and me and my crew didn’t get in. Legendary night tho!!!
DMX is the only rapper to release two albums same year and both went platinum and in top 20 at same time
He really was on top of the rap world and even had 300,000 heavy metal fans moshing at Woodstock 99. He’s legendary and probably the best live rapper I’ve ever heard.

Plus there's songs on the Ruff Ryders Vol 1&2 albums like Ryde or Die. This list can go on forever lol
Peace King ✊🏽.....Salute to DMX the Great🙏🏽 Can't wait for you to review the full X album. It changed everything in 1998 when it dropped. X is from my hood and even though he blew up instantly he never changed or forgot where he came from 💯!!!
Also check out the table freestyle for six birthday back in the day with X, Canibus, Big Pun, Mic Geronimo. Cold as hell. Don't forget about that 97 freestyle of Wu Tang Tim Westwood.
This was the song that set it off for X.. you had to be in the club… rip X-man
Yeah, I heard the tunnel was crazy back in the days. Mann
Boy, the tunnel was a new york staple. The memories alot of chains got snatched in there don't get me started on club speed
(fun fact)Snoop Dogg inspired the song name "get at me dog" after they met and they were departing Snoop was like "get at me dog" and DMX used it for this song... Whenever they did the vs they both spoke about it.
I'm so glad I grew up in this Era 🙌. We had so great hip hop.
Check out the remix. The whole Lox are in it
Bruh, we knew about X for years due to the mixtape game and everyone was wondering when he was getting signed then when was he coming out with his own. Dude had 2 platinum albums in one year.and has 14 platinum certs.
this time in music shaped me as a man take no shit an i love riding my bike the double RR shit was the truth as a child i drew it on everything my love for motorcycles came from this shit wink 1100 was the shit watched the dvd a million times rip dmx
An Instant Street Classic/Banger
This shit gad the streets on FIRE!!! To me, ‘98 was the best year in rap history. X first album, Bug Pun first album, NORE first album, Canibus was fire in the streets, Hov, cant sleep on the El Nino album, the Tony Touch mixtapes, I don’t think there will be another year like it ever
Cam’s first album. I’m pretty sure Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, The Lox first album, Beanie Sigel on the Roc… so much more in missing.
RnB side was crazy too. Brandy popped off. Aaliyah with the Are You That Somebody. Nicole Wray and Missy ‘Make it Hot’ that was the best summer I ever had. Irvington NJ what’s good!
This album is 🔥🔥🔥🔥 RIH DMX 👑
This album played non-stop in my '99 Dodge Neon lol. '98, the year of the dog, year of DMX.
Is that Sheek Louch from The Lox on the hook? Lox was gone from bad boy by the time this joint came out. 🤓🖖2🪰
When X first came on the scene i always felt like he was filling the void left from Pac passing away, not that there rapping style was similar but just from his whole street vibe and his look, i think he owed a lot of his initial success to that factor, obviously over time he built his own legacy but in the very beginning it was different
DMX was gutter af and yet 9, 10 and 11 year olds at the time loved his music. One of my top five favorites of all time.
First I thought " get me a dog " 🐶 LMAO 🤣😂
The Tunnel was the realist inside and out......good wold memories...
..
Pull it by DMX and Camron is a must
DMX the only entertainer tht’ll pop up by himself in any hood in America
Also the "Tunnel" you had to be ready to put in work if you wanted to go there .. it definitely wasn't for the feint of heart
Facts!
This was a game changer when it came out.
R.I.P TO THE DOG!
The tunnel is legendary and you just now getting to get at me dog. Wow, high school memories.
Imagine being 18 when this drops and runnin da streets day n night!
When this song hit the streets a new ERA of rap started. No more shinny suits
That direct diss to K-Solo the X drops was insane back then. No subliminals just straight up
This song and Get The Bozack from EPMD used this sample crazy. My man Ahmad should do a reaction to Get The Bozack as well. Great reaction bro.
Yeah, the tunnel was live....shut down in '01 I wanna say...
Edit; when X was battling on the corner he always had his dogs w him, had one bark on demand to go with his freestyles
I don't remember what sounds you have done but some of my faves of his would be: Ruff Ryders Anthem, Party Up, Blackout, Rollin' (Urban Assault w' Meth, Redman, and Limp Bizkit--a Limp Bizkit tune though) , Who We Be, One More Road to Cross, What's My Name, X Gon Give it to Ya, What these B*s Want, Damien ( one of the songs with that in the title...I'd have to listen to them again to be more specific which one of which album) , Who We Be, I'ma Bang, I Run Sh*, Give Em What they Want, ...probably some I'm missing...
Few people know that this is a Dis record to K Solo from EPMD hit squad ...Headbangers
Was working at ups when this joint dropped... my rican homie use to bang this in the Durango on the wat home fried smoking on that chocolate 🍫
1st heard DMX, college radio late night 11Pm to 2Am was the Rap time slot, they played -Stop Being Greedy. I don't know if you've heard that joint.
This is real street shit ,real hard music ,that we might never see again
Forever the king! Stilled listening today’s!!❤❤
Thats why dmx is special
That just goes to show you what a warrior and how fearless X was. He had his music video in the tunnel and telling niggas to "Get At Me Dog." He was on a mission being from the streets to be heard and it was a success. We heard him and we love him for being honest from the start. So you definitely right, it'll never be another DMX. Just cheap imitations and they'll never be as good as the original 💯💯🔥🔥🔥🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🙏🙏. Also Fun Fact about the Tunnel: Vin Diesel used to be a security guard at the tunnel. And according to Busta Rhymes, he used to break a lot of dudes faces and run in their pockets after lol. The power of "Family" was activated 🤣🤣🤣
Ahmad !! Please do Shaq & Biggie “ Can’t stop the reign “ please!!!! I think biggie verses are overlooked on that track
Sheek Louch on the hook
No other Lox member wanted to do the hook. DMX said Kiss & Styles would not do it. He said call Sheek.. He gon rock it!!
Per Irv Gotti
True Indeed
nice job. you can never have enough x in your life. yry out ATF
You're gonna like this 💯
Straight fire🔥 r.i.p. to my Dog
I remember growing up wanting to go to the tunnel. Then I got grown and realized I would NEVER go to the tunnel lol. That ain't my idea of fun
