CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Shane (Alan Ladd) rides out of the town alone, with young Joey (Brandon De Wilde) calling out to no avail, "Shane, come back."
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The simple story of a Wyoming range war is elevated to near-mythical status in producer/director George Stevens' Western classic Shane. Alan Ladd plays the title character, a mysterious drifter who rides into a tiny homesteading community and accepts the hospitality of a farming family. Patriarch Joe Starrett (Van Heflin) is impressed by the way Shane handles himself when facing down the hostile minions of land baron Emile Meyer, though he has trouble placing his complete trust in the stranger, as his Marion (Jean Arthur) is attracted to Shane in spite of herself, and his son Joey (Brandon De Wilde) flat-out idolizes Shane. When Meyer is unable to drive off the homesteaders by sheer brute strength, he engages the services of black-clad, wholly evil hired gun Jack Wilson (Jack Palance). The moment that Wilson shows he means business by shooting down hotheaded farmer Frank Torrey (Elisha Cook Jr.) is the film's most memorable scene: after years of becoming accustomed to carefully choreographed movie death scenes, the suddenness with which Torrey's life is snuffed out -- and the force with which he falls to the ground -- are startling. Shane knows that a showdown with Wilson is inevitable; he also knows that, unintentionally, he has become a disruptive element in the Starrett family. The manner in which he handles both these problems segues into the now-legendary "Come back, Shane" finale. Cinematographer Loyal Griggs imbues this no

I hope wherever Shane went he found peace.

Can't believe that they made an entire movie out of the ending of The Town with No Name.
Such hard work, dedication and inspiration is needed to adapt and make a movie out of it. Genuinely makes me proud of the writers and the director of this movie.
Joey, there's no living with... with a killing. There's no going back from one. Right or wrong, it's a brand. A brand sticks. There's no going back. Now you run on home to your mother, and tell her... tell her everything's all right. And there aren't any more guns in the valley.

Good points. Shane is a gunfighter. He respects the family life, but knows that can never be him.
When Shane leaves town, he is injured and bleeding. We don’t know if he survives for a day. What we do know is that Shane is doomed. Someone younger and faster will kill him.
Shane is the tragic hero.
Glad to see “The Town with No Name” got an HD Remake.

We never find out if Shane dies from his injuries or not, though his death is hinted at as he rides past a cemetary called "Boot Hill". In the end, it's not about whether he physically died, but rather than his life or death was now irrelevant because he no longer had a place in the world.

Mother wants you, I KNOW she does!! The kid was smart for his age.
Haha ... yeah, she had "bedroom eyes" for Shane the minute she saw him ride up to the house in the opening scenes.
@@gabbax2hey77 Tbh, her husband would be a man's man in our times...
That's one of the many beauties of this film. The boy often says things that are true through the eyes of innocence but that are also true on a level he can't comprehend yet. This film, like The Searchers, is very subtle and has a lot of subtext that's easy to miss. Shane, wanting to protect little Joey, never corrupts that innocence despite teaching him lessons and making a huge impact on his life. Beautiful story all around.
@@Icecreamforcrowtoo Exactly. And it's exactly the reason why Shane leaves - he knows that "mother wants him", and he wants her, too, but he is too honorable a man to come between a husband and a wife.
Ahhhhhhhhh😉😉😉😏😏😏
This scene hits 1000x harder when the name you go by is actually Joey
the music in this movie is awesome --
yeah
Loved every part of it, the music, little Joey, and shane...what a guy.
Of all the movie endings in that industry, the cinematographic artistry of this scene catapults it to the top imho. Shane riding away into the fierce unknown amidst the hearttugging score and backdrop of the tumultuously cloudy sky above the rugged Tetons is just unparalleled in the annals of film! Beyond all the while being torn living a simple ranchhand life with a loving family and an innocent boy who looked up to him was about as much of a painful dichotomy as one could imagine! Incredible capture of a scene on film as there ever was one! RIP Alan and Brandon!
Best western ever made with one of the all time great movie lines “a gun is a tool Marion no better no worse than any other tool, an axe a shovel anything , a gun is as good or as bad as the man using it REMEMBER THAT
There's always some strange nostalgic feeling that consumes me whenever i watch old movies and near the end camera just keeps rolling, even if it is from old movies showing times before i was even born.
It's closest we have to a time travel, a glimpse into past, a past no different than our present or even our future, just things that were and are no longer...
Beautifully said
Agreed. I get the same effect from watching 3 stooges and seeing how people lived, those ancient cars being brand new, even the land is different. I love watching anything that was filmed before i was born. ^^
My name's not Shane kid
I think what I feel the most is just every kid, mother, father, person who watched this and what they felt. what hopes and dreams and aspirations like me they have and where they are now. like the Boy, just calling back the past hoping it comes back
I live in a small town in Ireland and the last man in my fathers age group died a few weeks back really sad the end of an era. My mother said that she was the last one of them left as although all 8 of her sisters and brothers are still alive most of her friends are dead, funny how we take life so much for granted and the next thing it's gone and very soon after we're forgotten
Anyone else come here after watching the end of Logan?

What a powerful moment in LOGAN!
This part of the movie really cleans me out as it allows me to suffer great remorse for running away from home when my poor mother needed me the most. Left her running the family business making pizzas worried sick where I was. "Mother wants you. I know she does." Took years to forgive myself.
George Stevens directed this classic western. The relationships in the film are so well written. The boy and Shane's love for him. The subtle attraction between the wife and Shane. The father's feeling for Shane. And an ending that was so evocative and poignant. " Goodbye, Shane! "
There are no more guns in the valley. Truly one of the best written lines ever!

Watched LOGAN again the other day and this speech always makes me cry and it made that movie even more bitter sweet when Laura recited it.
SHANE brings a message of peace for humanity and will always be my favorite western. George Stevens never failed as movie director.
Gosh, my father loved this movie something fierce. I can see him in my mind's eye, sitting on his recliner, sucking on a Tootsie pop, watching this movie. Beautiful memories.
I think the little boy in every man loves this movie. It was my late husband’s favorite movie and this was his favorite scene. As a girl, I idolized the gunslingers of the Old West too. If you're American it's in your DNA.
Understand your feeling for the romantic side of the gunslngers of the old West Lisa BUT don't forget their life was miserable as hunted fugitives at the mercy of snitches and informers and corrupt Sherriffs and Magistrates. Shane hated his life as a gunslinger. When you have had the justice system at your throat then I'm sure you'll feel different. Good luck to you. Vince.
@@vincebaseley13 OH I know what you mean. We tend to romanticize the old West when in truth it was a harsh life.
