Hand Digging Nursery Trees

- This video discusses the digging of field grown nursery trees by hand. Sometimes, growers may find it quicker and cheaper to send one or two employees to hand dig a small order rather than using a tractor mounted spade. This video shows an example of hand digging and provides a couple of tricks to make the process quicker. Always remember to consult your copy of the ANLA Standard for Nursery Stock to determine the required root ball size different crops.

I came to UA-cam for help getting a Baldcypress tree I balled and burlapped out of the hole b/c it's too big / heavy to lift it out by myself. And your trick of back filling half the hole and tipping back and forth has solved my crisis ! Thanks K.U. , :-).
No slope, No stones in the soil, plenty of space around ; just ideal ;)
Did one last year & used a lumber planck to help tilt it while refilling the pit with dirt. Then placed the ball on potting soil bags to help sliding the tree to the new location.
Doing another one tomorrow (5/6 year old Blackthorn Prunus). Cheers.

thank you so much for the guidance....I did a 4 feet plant relocation (with 3-4 inch trunk diameter )...but had no idea how much to dig around so dig around it with 1 feet gap from the trunk base....plant came out nicely but was heavy to lift manually....so called up my uncle to help...i still got three more to relocate but this time will use your guidance...thanks again...

Thank you so much.! I especially like the part about back filing the dirt to get the tree out. I have a Colorado spruce about 12 feet tall that is leaning toward to the right. I don't want to transplant the tree just dig up enough of the side it is leaning toward and tilt it in the opposite direction

Thanks for this video. I hope, I could replant my fir tree tomorrow using the info you gave in this video. Do you know by any chance, if I cut some roots by my fir tree, will my tree survive it? My fir tree is about 5 and half feet at the moment, I started to dig around it today and some roots go far away from the tree, I won't be able to take any single root without cutting some. The tree is gorgeous, we planted it next to my rose and it grew very fast almost killed my beautiful rose. We decided to replant the tree in a different corner of our backyard. I hope, it won't die if we cut some roots. Thanks in advance for any answer.

Keep in mind that this won't work so well in the normal soil that you would often find in a backyard. A nurseryman (or women) knows that for this to work the topsoil needs to be deeper than the root ball will be when the tree will be excavated. Soil composition has to be considered in order to increase the integrity of the root ball as it's being dug. The more clay there is in the soil, the more likely the ball will hold together. If there are any rocks in the soil it won't go nearly as well. You'll want to use a shovel with a very sharp edge and keep a file handy in order to keep the shovel sharp, this is critical because when a dull shovel blade hits a root, instead of cutting through it you will likely damage the ball and doing that a few times will wreck the ball. Another factor to consider is the water content of the soil. You want it to be not to wet, not too dry. Give the tree a deep soak about a week before you dig.

It doesnt show the main root cutting that is usually found at the bottom of the root ball (strait below the tree trunk). Be carefull to get as much of possible length of this one without hurting it between the cutted end & the tree base. Better get a cup/cone shaped ball.

In Europe we do this ten times faster :) and better :p
