Call me crazy, but I might go so far as to say I liked FFV better than FFVI. It's been a long time since I played FFVI, and I played the Steam version, so I may have to play the Pixel Remaster at some point to make a more equivalent determination.
But while FFVI absolutely blows V out of the water in terms of story (and Exdeath is impossible to take seriously), I still really enjoy V's more light-hearted approach and sense of humor. More than that, I just find V more fun. It probably has my favorite combat and leveling system of all the classic Final Fantasy games. I also like how easy it is to swap out abilities and gear, making grinding not so much of a slog as it is in other games. That might be a quality of life improvement in the Pixel Remaster for all I know, but I still really like it. One thing about FFVI and FFIX that frustrated me was the grind, and how annoying it was constantly switching out characters and gear --- but I didn't feel that way when I played V, and I enjoyed how much variety and diversity there was in terms of job classes and combining abilities and whatnot.
I also think it can be said that there's more emphasis on strategy in V. Even in early parts of the game, I would get completely wrecked sometimes if I wasn't prepared. It was kind of an unexpected but not unwelcome challenge.

I'd rather see an HD-2D remake of this than something like FFVI. A remake of this could elevate the story and presentation a bit to do it real justice.

Something I really appreciate about FFV is how every boss is like a puzzle. Most of them have some trick to them, or a weakness to exploit. I like the process of failing, then adjusting my strategy until I win.

I don't expect the current Square Enix to do these older games justice anymore. However, this game should've had a remake by now.

This and VI. Not holding my breath though, SE is still busy trying to milk the VII franchise dry.

Great game, very good soundtrack (as per usual) and good mechanics. The only thing I can "complain" is that you could level all the jobs and get really really overpowered hehe, making the game less fun.
    Good Video!

damn straight. its my go to for 2D final fantasys. 6 is just a link to the past with 7 being ocarina of time, and for 4, and although ive learned a bit about the characters and how greatly written it is, they didnt grip me like Bartz because i like a softer looking protagonist usually.
like, 6 i great im sure, but theres some kind of personal spark its missing for me. I also don't like constantly hearing about Kefka destroying the world, its kind of a game without hope for me.

Hehe I like how show that super Amano artwork inspired opening movie where everyone looks beautiful and sad while talking about the lightheartedness of five. The Anthologies and Chronicles collections on PS1 were perfect for lil me, I had a SNES but none of the FF games on it, probably because I couldn’t read yet. I got to read all about the games, walkthroughs, midi files of the songs on this old website called FFShrine or something. I built them up in my head and they didn’t disappoint, I was eatin’ good around that turn of the millennium with vidja games. Oh and FF Origins, with 1 and 2! Remakes before those became commonplace! So 3 is always the one I never got into, had a PC port on Steam but it didn’t feel right, I wanted more antiquated funk and less smoothness.

It's fascinating to me how Exdeath has garnered this reputation of being a generic evil wizard man; perhaps it's just because Kefka and Sephiroth are the next two up and get all the attention from fans, but at the time of release Exdeath is by an immense margin the most fleshed out villain in the series with the most personality. Golbez comes closest with what few imposing scenes he gets, but ultimately lacks a lot of screentime and gets sidelined way too casually in favor of Zemus at the end in a way that is a detriment to his character.
Exdeath from the moment he's introduced is an active and present antagonist in a way FF hadn't had before, and hams it up spectacularly at every chance. On their own they're not individually significant, but when you combine scenes like the giant mirror, the splinter and subsequent turtle fight, him turning into a giant tree with his head just poking out of the top, and his general attitude of delighting in what he does, he simply has so much more personality and agency than what we'd gotten up to that point.

Don't take my word for it I am awful at pronouncing Final Fantasy character names, it took me two decades to stop pronouncing Aeris as Aries... and mercifully now it's Aerith.

    • @tromlui7
      @tromlui7 6 днів тому

For what it is worth, in FFXIV both Galuf and Krile are characters of import. Her name is pronounced Cry-uhl by the English VA team (ensure about the native JP).
They're more references to the FF5 characters than direct corellaries though, so you could probably still make an argument for both pronounciations.

Living with no internet, I had FFV and FFVI via the GBA android emulator. They kept me entertained during a rough time.
FFV had superior gameplay. FFVI looked better, plus the story was more memorable.
I was a big fan of the job system. Losing it in VI sucked.
(I tried to play FFIV, but the original pixel graphics are SO bad.)

    Gameplay was an
    amazing continuation of 3.
Easily, easily the worst story of the 16 bit story, quarks or not.
All the games had levity characters, but what's being suggested here is the excessive levity hete somehow redeems such a weak, uncompelling narrative.
    It doesn't at all.

  • @shedijon

I'm sure 6 blew everybody's mind in its hayday but 16 bit games don't hit very hard anymore. I've experienced shit like Witcher 3 and the last of us. That's why 5 is the best of the pixel era. It's all quality rpg game play without taking the story too seriously which helped it age into the modern era much better.

I love the actual game, but this is the one that is most infamous to me for the otherwise pretty cool Amano art being completely divorced from the in-game sprites. Who the hell are the concept drawings even supposed to be?
Even the updated re-releases don't fix this. Bartz is the worst for it, but Faris is wildly different from her art, too.

It's pretty simple to understand why it doesn't get much praise. It did not receive a western port until after FFVI came out.

speak for yourself buffy i appreciate ffv all the way. its the first one in the series i played cuz i only had an emulator and no console at home and i was looking for games. i recently found out that the lore about the creation of an english rom is itself a pretty crazy story in itself

It was through the Anthology release that I played V, with me kind of slogging through the game, quite disappointed that the depth of storytelling wasn‘t up to par with VI. I ended up not finishing it (got stuck on wiping at the final boss) and only after a decade or so, decided to pick it up again. Finally finished it then and can say that it was actually great and massively underappreciated.

I replayed this game last year in the Pixel Remaster, and frankly? It's my third favourite in the series behind 7 and 9. It has what I call, Henson Energy, in that the tone and expressiveness of the characters reminded my of Jim Henson's best work. I loved it

Replayability is the key point of this game. Story wise, is not good and a step down from 4. But, oh boy, it's a pleasure to come back playing it. So many different strategies for a same boss, dangerous story bosses, superbosses, an entirely new et hard "post-game"dungeon with multiples bosses for the gba version, community challenges ( I do a lot of job fiesta, it's fun).
Music is good, visual is okay. People can be surprise how low level you can finish this game ( so grinding is not very relevant ).
Yeah, the story is not that good. FF5 was the last game introduce the concept of "crystals" thing for a long time. X-death is threatening but not a interesting foe.
Not a perfect game by no mean but definitely a underrated one.

That's a massive gap in time to include Clive in that line-up lol! I think one would include Lightning before that, despite as much as that should be forgotten. I don't think Squall has a haunting past, no more than the rest of the cast given they were just orphans. His inner conflict was with trusting others and not being abandoned, whereas Cloud was struggling with being a loser (a jest lol) and struggle of Soldiers with Mako, connecting to Sephiroth. I haven't played XVI, but I thought Clive's story was just his mother was an evil/selfish SOB that made his life hell later. I can only see Cecil and Cloud being characters burdened and moody, it was just the English translation of Squall that exaggerated his introverted nature. He simply was too cool for school.

I do agree that people want to slice up the series being this or that in storytelling. They were made to be separate stories for a reason, so there wasn't such limitation on a direction the story and mechanics could go. That's gone out the window with sequels and far too much experimentation, but that truth was present for most of the series life. I never felt the tone of series changed as I saw each on as their own separate thing. You'd have to try harder to not see it that way. I've never been that bothered by the series changes up until FFX-2, as the glue that was Sakaguchi was gone. It's likely people picked their favorites and wanted to series to be like that from then on. By FFVII introducing new gamers to JRPGs, their expectation was for that to be the series' identity, not knowing what came before.
