  • Do this and get a 'head start' from other gardeners. When they're planting potatoes with a few shoots, you'll be planting potatoes with shoots and roots. I've been starting potatoes off in winter indoors like this for a number of years now and so know it works. This is a compilation 2 part video that shows me planting the potatoes and moves on to a growth check after about six weeks of slow indoor growing in a cold garage. When we moved into spring and as the weather warmed up I moved the potato plants up into the water buckets to grow on outdoors to harvest.
    The next stage, move them up, move them out: • Grow Potatoes. This p...

    I love your channel Mr HGV...been watching for at least 6 years I reckon, perhaps longer.....ooh so that's what you look like....! i sort of imagined you only as a disembodied voice after all this time. Anyway.....very nice to see you. I still miss your Molly.... when i make veggie curries or soup with stray little tatties I call them bean and Molly soup/curry. Take care sir.

    Not done anything for next year yet...... fridge is full of various stratified seeds and pips..... i'm getting itchy to start off some tomatoes and peppers. I need to screen off a bit of my plot from the wind, deep clean my hens, do some grape cuttings and get a few barrows of muck shifted then i'll be all set to concentrate on what I want to do for next year..... definately going to give this spud thing a go. Noodle pots are nice and strong, and i have loads.... so, no excuses not to try 🌹

    I think you were one of my very first utubers I ever watched, way back when Mollys was the only face we saw. I just moved, no garden, no greenhouse, really hard to be without but spring is coming to Oregon some time.. then the greenhouse will get finished and drainage done for the garden area. Can't wait!

    I think I might start a few spuds off myself very soon. When the shoots and roots start showing I will probably water the pots from the bottom to encourage the roots down and avoid soaking the seed potatoes.

    Excellent I use yogurt containers too but I cut slits in the bottom edge rather then through the bottom so when the roots are long they don't get tangled and make it easier to remove

    • @HomeGrownVeg
      @HomeGrownVeg  Місяць тому +1

      Talking potatoes only, when I turn them out of a yogurt pot, because the roots are somewhat restricted and run around the pot under the potato. The potato plant comes out with all, if not most, of the soil attached. This works for me I expect putting slits in would do the same? Jim.

    Last year I tried to grow my first early potatoes in buckets as I do every year but this time start them off in January in the greenhouse then put them outside when the weather improves. It sounded like a good idea but in fact I only got half the yield of normal years, in all six buckets. Doh!

    I have had trouble starting potatoes in the house (quick start) Sometimes they rot. Looks like I need to back off from watering until 1st roots are showing!

    • @HomeGrownVeg
      @HomeGrownVeg  Місяць тому +4

      There's enough energy in the potato to support the production of some shoots and roots. No roots no water its pointless. Go again Susan you can do this. Jim.

    When I see a video of yours, first time, was because of the title "from start to finish" .... and was so ...not only in the title .... and I like it and I looked to every videos from then.
    And another poin of attraction was Molly.....
    I have a Molly too, almost identical .....Hermionne, 13 years.
    I want to ask you what are the temperature in your garage where you put the potatoes?
    Thank You for your meticulous approach and presentation.

    Sorry I didn’t finish I pressed the wrong button as I said i planted some potatoes in large pots just one per pot a month ago covered them with straw put them in the poly tunnel last year I did the same by April I got a good batch from them so I’m trying the same thing this year, I’ve also got onions growing but they were planted a few months ago, so it’s trail and error it can be worth it but you can lose by it.

    • @HomeGrownVeg
      @HomeGrownVeg  Місяць тому +1

      Store them cool dark and dry in the first two winter months. Warm and dry and light in the last winter month and chits will start to grow. Try to avoid any frost start planting in early spring. Give or take a few weeks either way, weather dependant.

    Rooting is not the problem, letting them reach maturity in house is however. They won't get enough sunlight and will die off, let alone produce tubers. If they don't die because of lack of light, they'll die because of sciaridae flies.

    • @HomeGrownVeg
      @HomeGrownVeg  Місяць тому +3
