    I think I got insulted for being a girl one time in sea of thieves, followed by the rest of the crew all collectively saying not cool and shutting him up. I feel bad for the fact that people go through so many more insults than that, but also hopeful that a lot of people will stand up if they actively hear that shit going on.

    Couldnt Auto muting potentially be another way of bullying? What if people purposely mute one person so that they get Auto-muted for no reason? We've seen it happen here on UA-cam, were videos get flagged for copyright or spam for no reason, and they get away with it.

      *****
      The top ten percent of the entire community playing a game is a very small group of a large group of people. Now if there is someone who deserves to be muted, then they're going to be muted; and quite frequently too. Do you honestly believe that anyone actually has the ability or desire (as this would be a huge task with not a lot of pay-off) to organize others into muting someone who doesn't deserve it just as much or more frequently than someone who does?
      Now I don't know what experiences you've had with moderators in the past. But if you're really the kind of person that would call someone else a two-year old for having a dissenting opinion and treat a fellow gaming community in a similar way, then I would ban you as well.

    Man, this is so important. I’ve stopped playing a lot of online games due to really toxic communities and online harassment. Yeah, you can ignore it, but I play games to relax, and even ignoring rude players isn’t relaxing.

    • @usernamesgone

      Shame that it sort of self-perpetuates itself by pushing people out when they've had the toxic garbage dumped their way. Took a loooong break from being on mic playing CoD alone: was asked if I would let a guy lick mayo off my toe within five sessions. Not nearly as bad as the harassment other people get, but was a lame, fast-acting reminder for why I avoided letting myself be heard for so long, and feel like I have "something to prove" to simply exist in the gaming space.

    • @aramilian1471
      @aramilian1471 9 років тому +3

      Amelia Bee If any of the solutions given here didn't specifically call for some very frightening results I would be okay with it, but this isn't helping others, it's simple censoring. This could be used by someone not liking another player because they give commands that they don't like, only to shut them down by getting them muted for good. What if someone decided to shout a command? What if someone decided to yell a piece of advice? Sudden muting. This is a place we DON'T want to step into, not because trolls need to be allowed to troll, but because non-trolls will more than likely feel much more of a sting from this in the end.

    • @michaelberg9348
      @michaelberg9348 9 років тому +3

      J Woldridge unless the commands are a fundamental part of the game, they would just be advices/requests. And it would take more than a single dislike to trigger this situation (10% above average, is quite a lot AND was only a guideline)
      as for the censoring/'muted for good' argument: no it would not "just START them automuted, not stopping anyone from unmuting them"
      As for the 'sudden muting' point. I see how that would be a problem in certain fast-paced team-games and something the individual systems should consider if they decide to deviate from the advised 'on game start only'-implementation.
      A 'never automute'- option (to be clear: your choice to start with everyone unmuted, not your choice to have no-one automute you) could be a decent (finetune) option
      As for 'it will hurt the non-trolls more than the trolls': i'm really not seeing that one.
      For that to be true someone needs to fail miserably with the fine-tuning(usually easily fixed), or the service in question(or rather a majority of its audience) actually has 'trolling' as 'desirable behavior'
      In the latter case (spotted as 'did happen once'in a comment below) that has indeed become a place where the choices are 'accept it or leave', the kind of place i'm perfectly fine with seeing fall into abandonment.(or rather,'not even bother watching')

    I have an idea for how to stop abusive written comments. Make a database which contains every word in the english dictionary, minus words you don't want people to say (racial slurs, cuss words and the like). Now make it that you aren't allowed to send a comment if it has a word that isn't recognised by the database.

      A lot of systems already have these in place. I think Mortal Kombat published the list of words that you weren't able to say if you want to try googling it. But these lists can't include every word and they're usually easily tricked. Animal Crossing had an animal go from one persons town to the other saying ñigga which caused a small controversy for Nintendo. Even if you could account for every word, some players would prefer the freedom to say 'this is shit' to 'this is bad' and wouldn't want to infringe upon their freedoms for the sake of trolls. When someone creates a system that can detect if the message is specifically a personal attack, then I don't think players would mind but no one seems to be creating such a thing (not that I checked).

    • @LittleJimmy835
      @LittleJimmy835 10 років тому +9

      That's why my system wasn't a list of word you weren't allowed to say, but instead was a list of words that you WERE allowed to say. Even if you spelled a word differently it wouldn't matter because if it's not on the list you still can't say it.
      As far as affecting no abusive players go, it's the same as what Extra Credits said about point 2; it might suck, but it also may be necessary.

      Either way, it doesn't work. I can still call you a worthless smelly brown exit-only area, and since the words are perfectly fine to use in their own context, it's going to be easy for me to call you a worthless, stinking a-hole. Not to mention that there is no dictionary in the world that can keep up with the evolution of the English language, much less all the different localized variants, and expressions. Language is a living thing, it changes.

      What about downvotes?
      They're recording my likes already, by the time I wrote this, I totaled 346 likes, just hypothetically, what if downvotes had a negative effect?
      That totaling set amount of dislikes within set amounts of time can cause a negative effect?
      For example: I get 300 downvotes within a week... I get a penalty for that, maybe a warning saying "You've received a large amounts of dislikes within a short amount of time," maybe verbal warning's at first, if they said amount of dislikes continues, then they get actual warnings?
      Just a suggestion...

    These videos are the perfect example of UA-cam's troll update and its effect on comments sections.
    In each video the vast majority of viewers, to oversimplify, 'agree with the message'. In each video there is someone from the minority of those who 'strongly disagree with the message' expressing this in a (often confrontational) comment. In each comment you see many, often upwards of 100, replies--the vast majority of these disagreeing with the user. Because the comment receives so many responses, it is promoted to the highest possible spot because it is deemed 'most popular'. To compound this, UA-cam has disconnected the dislike button (yes it still lights up but that is literally all it does) meaning that only those who approve the comment can affect its popularity rating. UA-cam gives the loudest megaphone to those with the most dislikeable things to say.
    What is worse than having to see the most widely disliked comments as top comments (no longer with the option to default to new comments either) is the false impression consistently given which is that these top comments are the most representative of the content viewers when in fact they are the direct opposite. It is horrible.
    If this is just a spectacular failure with good intentions then why, after over a year, has it not been even slightly ammended?

      I've been doing a marathon of all of the EC videos over the last few days, and for whatever reason I've been poking through the comments to see what I can find. Even though all of the videos have about a 90% green rating bar or higher, if you read the comments you'd think EC is the most universally hated thing since Rebecca Black. "____ sucks and you should go bury yourself!" "Dan/James/someone who isn't actually in EC but got referenced in the video is trying to brainwash us with false information on ____ (these are usually disproved by at least ten separate people in the replies)!" "How dare you try to present ____ from a different point of view!" It's gone _beyond_ cringeworthy.
      I don't know if UA-cam's updated the system since you wrote the message, but it sure as hell has a long way to go.

      KingsIsle, Wizard101 and Pirate101 developer and publisher, did that, too. If you were reported for harassing others too many times, they'd shut down your chat privileges by "Muting" you.
      Furthermore, they can also mute your IP address, making it impossible to simply start up another account just to continue your deplorable behavior without first changing your IP address, which is something select internet providers, such as Frontier, generally don't like to you doing. They can literally shut down your internet entirely for trying to change your IP address.

      Its sad that, that is the kind of experience you've had in games. I have no problems playing games with anyone as long as they are fun to play with and are fair. But unfortunately, not everyone sees it like I do. In Planetside 2, a very qualified (one could argue OVER qualified) girl gamer was passed over a least a dozen times for promotion to the next rank in my old outfit (basically a guild) because no one respected her. The girl was easily the most dangerous and skilled player in the group, but since no one would listen to any order she gave and would often mute her in chat, she became essentially a non-entity. It ended with her quitting the game and it was sad because she was a lovely person and was an absolute blast to game with. A total waste.
      But hey, obviously not everyone in gaming is bad. When that girl quit the game, I quit the outfit. No one who will pass over an awesome gamer like that is worth my time. We're here to have fun, not to hate!

    Garbage people in the gaming communities I love are one of the main reasons I don't play with strangers if I can help it. I'd rather play with a friend who I know isn't gonna spout this bullshit at me, especially if I'm not particularly good at a game. Take LoL for example. I adore the fact that they introduced the co-op vs AI mode in the game, before its introduction I rarely played because every time I'd go play PVP, I would die constantly and could never actually survive long enough to learn how my character works. Plus, it's not fun to have to deal with the other team shit talking you and your own belittling you for not being good. So co-op is a very nice addition, it lets me learn new heroes and no one complains at me if I don't do well because we're playing bots, not real people.

    That accepting, kind, safe community was what I loved so much when I first started playing MMO's. It gave me the love of games I have today, it saved my life to have the friends I met online. That community and empowerment I felt (and, thank god, still feel) are why I now want to MAKE video games. As a woman, I guess I'm really lucky to not have really faced this problem myself before. I figure that has a lot to do with my choice of games, general quietness, and the fact that I usually try to play with people that have demonstrated kindness to me. But I have friends who have been harassed. It was terrible. They would have to use back-up accounts, or only play at odd hours to avoid the bullies. Sometimes they'd just disappear altogether. They usually came back...but not always. We, as a community have to do something about this.

    One problem I can forsee with the auto-mute system is the fact that a majority of people playing online (in my experience) don't use microphones or choose to not communicate with others in-game. Thus bringing the average player closer to 'never gets muted' because they don't speak up, and therefore no one has any reason to mute them. The problem arises when people like me (and I assume many others) who don't usually communicate over these games decide to just mute anyone who wants to talk. Not becasue they are spouting obscenities or racial slurs or whatever (though admittedly that is usually the case), but because I'm not interested in talking to them, and it becomes more of an annoyance, especially when I'm not interested in finding my headset in the middle of an intense game where losing focus, even for a few seconds, could mean the game, and sending my voice out there to voice my opinions on strategy or playstyle. But that's a story for another time. So, players who constructively contribute to a team or a community may just get muted because I don't want to deal with one more thing in my game.
    Maybe that's just me and no one else feels this same way, and any positive contribution to the game is welcomed and accepted. Plus, that doesn't cover private text-based messaging, which may be much more easily monitored. Furthermore, I've had plenty of online games where I've met legitimately nice people and had really great games with them, despite my usual tendency to mute other players, if for nothing other than fear that they will make some sort of offensive or vulgar comment (as my Xbox is in a public room and I have young siblings). For the most part though, I 100% agree with the points this video makes, and hope to see some of these ideas implemented in the future.

If you go around punching people because they say stupid shit, you'd pretty much have to punch everyone. You, I, and everyone else on this planet remembers when they were younger and they made some stupid mistake, and they cringe. Another idea: One can flag a person as "i dont want to play with him/her". This way, the matchmaking system wont put them in the same match again. This way, people who are really toxic will, after a while, find it harder and harder to start a game due to restrictions. If it is already included in the "Block" command, all the better.

    I was in two Hawken matches an everyone except one guy was being sportsmanlike, it was an early port to PS4 so not all the features work including the mute button. As a result what was a game where players were strategizing and commending each other on their playstyle a single person who had some sort of inferiority complex drove literally the entire roster to disconnect, this isn't just being ethical it's also just smart for game designers to not force the players to endure blatant toxicity, it's in bad business to make the player hesitant to return to the game.

    It's 2022 and toxicity is especially rough, and it even extends to social media. For example, someone can completely ignore your argument by simply replying with the nerd emoji and my one IRL friend is unwilling to step outside his comfort zone of 21st century humor. People will also look for mispelignz like what you saw just now in an attempt to find something they can dunk on people for. As a matter of fact, this kind of statement that I am making right now is likely going to receive some form of hate since it expresses an opinion.

    Honestly... Whenever I hear/see someone trash talking I tell them to prove it with their skill. When they win/when I win, I throw out a GG.
    This is how these people should be handled. If they are the minority of the community, then the rest of us need to step up and show them how to behave online.
    It all goes back to their assumed anonymity. They think nothing will come back to them, so they behave as if there are no rules.
    When talking about women in gaming..... I have met a few. There was one where she was hyper defensive about being female. I complimented a shot she took to my head, and she called me patronizing and "wanted to be her f--k buddy' just because she was female. To have someone become SO damn jaded by an online community... That's terrible.
    Over the years of being a gamer, I have had the anger problems associated with games. I have also developed quite a few.... I'm going to call them 'skills' for lack of better word; to combat that anger. Get stuck in a game and it's pissing you off? Play something else for awhile. Taking a break from one game will allow you to clear your head and come back to find the solutions. Always try to have FUN playing these things. A game is called a game for a reason. Be nicer to those people who are doing terrible. Sometimes, a word of encouragement is all that is needed to come back from the brink of defeat. Their game improves. They start listening to friendly advice. When you get toxic communities, like that of League, DOTA, etc, you teach everyone that is the ONLY way to act.

      I'm so happy you took the female gamer that reacted negatively to your compliment as a sign of how she's been marginalized by the community, not how she's marginalized herself. A lot of people would, through that anecdote, move farther TOWARDS the misogynist side of the gaming community, because the over-defensiveness/sensitivity makes her seem like a bad edition to gaming culture, and a simple mind would think that it's because she's a girl. It takes some self awareness, and an actual empathetic mind to realize that when people act out, it's always for a reason, and thinking about that reason instead of the action itself is what's going to inform you on what the person is actually like. It is sad. She shouldn't feel like she should have to protect her identity when acting in an environment she enjoys. Her identity, gender and everything included, should be a PART of her gaming experience, not something that conflicts with it.

    I take a bit of issue with the idea that 'something must have gone horribly wrong in their lives' for them to bully and harass people. That's what moms say all the time to cheer their kids up but its not exactly true. I think people just have a natural tendency to be shitty to one another if there's no consequence to that action, we need to recognise that we're not dealing with a boogey man. Only humans.

      I think that we are all born being selfish/self-centered. Just look at how infants and toddlers behave. I think people become bullies because they lack understanding in some degree, in either self-control, empathy, or consequences of actions. And this is lacking is usually, but not always, combined with a low self-esteem. I think the low self-esteem is more of a catalyst, then then sole reasoning of the bulling.
      My reason for this is that we all know people who have a low self-esteem, but don't unleash their "inner beast" on to other people, but we all know of someone who has a high self-esteem, but are cruel to others.
      Well, these are just my thoughts anyways.

  • @luliby2309
    @luliby2309 6 років тому +10

    This is still such a massive problem in this community and it's ridiculous. I find it distinctly hypocritical for a community that has been known to take in the outcast and let people outside of the norm be welcomed and accepted to then disparage others who are a part of that community and even people who are minorities, who you would think would be immediately understood and let in. "Oh, you're also misunderstood and not accepted as a minority? Come on in with other people just like you!". You'd think that'd happen.
    Also, some of these people are just immature and insecure people who have been harmed and/or are lacking that power and presence in the world...but some really are just ignorant. A lot of people who say these sexist and racist things grew up in a culture that teaches them that they should be acting this way or that acting this way is okay. It's not, and these people need to learn that those behaviors are completely unacceptable. Confronting them can help. Silencing these people does limit toxicity, but these people are bad and doing horrible things and that also needs to be addressed. More macro solutions probably will be needed, such as supporting better education for all people and supporting access to things like therapy. Cause really, these people are the lowest of the low, the absolute dregs, and they deserve no better and deserve no attention until they learn and heal.

  • @SoanosBarcoded
    @SoanosBarcoded 10 років тому +10

    In games, the vitriol and hatred can sometimes run rampant and the words can hurt as intensely as real physical pain. Gamers are not all the same. There are some sensitive, kind and nice people who just want to enjoy their game and relieve the stress that has been building up, but their experience is getting ruined by people who just spew hatred and anger in their face and ear. There are also people who play games to deal with their depression and low self-esteem, and getting an earful of derogatory comments on how worthless they are just makes it worse. People can break down from words. They have a lot of power on "broken" people.
    Then there is the group of people who seem to enjoy hurting other people online. These people, trolls, bullies, jerks, whatever you want to call them must have some issues of their own, be it personal sense of powerlessness, weakness or other real life issues they unleash on the other members of their community with reckless abandon. But this is not the right way. They have a problem recognising their own fault. They need to learn to understand why they do it and why it is important that they stop doing it and learn how to deal with their frustration and anger, and how to put their feelings into words. Only then they can begin to grow as a person.
    Anyone who pulls "freedom of speech"-card to defend bullying, misogyny and hatred to defend their despicable actions online should put down the controller, shut down their rig and think for a while. Freedom of speech is not same as freedom to hurt others. NOTHING can justify that.

    Bullies aren't the ones who have deep psychological trauma acting out. That's a myth. Bullies arise during a time of disruption, they tend to be well liked and popular, and they tend to be the ones who say "this person is not one of us, so we can bully 'them.'"
    Getting rid of bullies will always be tricky because one person's bully is another community's leader.

    Really, this is soo important. Until recently I mainly played by myself, and it kind of horrified me when I started going online and I began to see all of this kind of stuff happening. It's actually kind of become one of my personal gamer goals, to be understanding and polite at all times when online. If they have to get off because it's an emergency, tell them it's okay, and hope that all will go well, don't start screaming at them about how much you will kill their entire family. If someone doesn't know the rules, be helpful, teach them, don't scream at them for how they're ruining everything because they're new or haven't learned everything yet. I grew up in a family of gamers, my parents, my uncles, my cousins, everyone, and I grew up in a safe environment. The older members were understanding, patient and polite, and the younger members weren't afraid to ask the older ones for help. It has really taught me the value of kindness in the gaming community, and what our community should really be like, and what should represent our community. Our accepting of others, that everyone who plays has their own lives, their own problems, their own things hurting them inside, and that our games ARE NOT more important. Sorry, for ranting and rambling, but this video kind of inspired me.
    -Thank you,
    A Hopeful Gamer

      All too often I see someone verbally harassing someone, and then the victim claiming that the harasser is no better, that they're too low experience to even know the difference between skill and the lack of it. This may just be an attempt at countering and remarking at the harasser, but whatever the motivation, this encourages the idea that if you're high enough experience or skill level, you have the right to trash talk people and harass them, and drawing the line between bragging rights and verbal abuse is so much harder than you may think. It's not easy to tell when someone is personally insulting you or just celebrating their superiority. Basically, the only thing worse than a bad loser is a bad winner.

      Idk if you're still meeting these kinds of people but the appropriate response to being called a bitch is usually "yes, why do you think your mom and i are business partners"

    3:36 I disagree with this point
    Often times I would message someone asking if they can promote me in the squad or do a simple task that requires a simple button press and no real response.
    I would also often give people little tips like
    You can do this here or there's a cool Easter egg here.
    These things don't rely require a response and with a system like this in place it would discourage people like me from trying to improve the fellow players

      I also disagree as someone could choose to ignore your messages which would cause this system to trigger. I think it should be that if someone keeps getting their messages reported, that would be a more fair system as unfair reports could also be reducted if when the reported message is read, they can see if it is a message that should or shouldn't be reported

    • @yoshitotem
      @yoshitotem 5 років тому

      Except that implies that such a system would block your ability to send messages to random people after only
      a few messages with no response. The threshold for a block would realistically be MUCH HIGHER to account
      for the things you brought up. The system wouldn't trigger after one or ten messages, it would have to be something like 20 to 50 messages not responded to, maybe more.
      Also, said system would also likely be coupled with the auto mute stated before, and both would be coupled to the report system.
      Lastly, all the activities you listed sound like things people on your friends list would do, this system doesn't block communications with friends, dan made that quite clear.

      hetaliauchiha Tons of games don't require or allow communication. You play and that's it. Other than occasional frustration, bad matchmaking resulting in "git gud" scenarios and AFKing, the social aspect is not a problem there. 1v1 games have no such problems.

    Yeah, I can't tell you how many times I've complained about this and my friends have just shut me down saying that I'm the one with the problem. I care too much and this is just gaming. Some games BREED toxicity. Riot's League of Legends for one.

      Mobas breed toxicity because there is a large investment of time and the mistakes done in the first ten minutes all but determine the outcome of a thirty or forty minute game. If games were shorter or easier to leave people would not be as toxic because they could just move on to the next game.

    5 years in the future, but I feel it's worth bringing up.
    In offhand conversation, I often times ask other adult gamers about voice and chat mute. The majority of people I speak with, and myself included, don't mute people for toxicity. We mute people because all we want is a few matches of us and our gun vs them, and the last thing we want is some person yelling at us about how we're not tryharding or to listen to someone eating their doritos with the "press key to talk" option turned off. If we want to be strategic and use that most op of tactics, teamwork, we'll tough it out.
    I understand that personal experience is not sufficient evidence for a larger trend, but it does give me concern in the idea of using mute statistics as a basis of punishment. I'd be interested in seeing the concept explored to see if it is a wider behavior, and to see better ways to associated muting as being a response to negative behavior. When, are they muted, for example? A person muted the instant a game starts vs a person muted 4 minutes into a losing match tell two different stories.
    I know there are other topics in the video, and I apologize. Better voice chat is a subject near and dear to me, and I tend to focus on it. Otherwise, glad you all talked about this way back in 2012.
