Great advice. I am a widow of 4 years in my late 60s and I have always been very careful with finances. Some people might call me stingy😳, but I was raised well by conservative parents (who went through the Great Depression). My late husband was the same. Advice to many of you ladies: we never know when we could lose our husbands! Mine passed very quickly from early onset Alzheimers. I work, but he made the majority of the money. I was so thankful we had paid off the loan early on our house! If not, I couldn't have afforded to stay in my home (I live in S. California!) Learn to live below your means and don't buy things you really don't need. They become a burden.

This was an excellent video! Great advice. I learned all of this from my Father as well. In my very early 20s, my first job outside of working for my dad, I make 14k the first year and put 8k in my 401k. I was young and had no expenses. I remember being mad that I didn’t reach the max that year which was about 11k(I think)...... looking back, I’m so grateful for all that my parents taught me about investing..... I wish we had investing classes taught by parents with experience.... starting in elementary school. I’m sure that’s when I started learning!

I have a question for next month. Michael commented that you know as much about this as he does. Do you keep up with the investments? My husband sounds very much like Michael. He stays on top of them and is always moving money around. I have a fair idea of where our money is, but am looking for a way to keep track of various accounts. How do you guys do it? Spreadsheet? My concern is that if something happened to my husband, I wouldn't know exactly what we have--or if something happened to both of us, how would our kids know? Do you have a system for that? Hope this makes sense.

I really enjoyed this! My hubby & I got married in our early 20s. We got married at church & had a backyard reception. I’m so glad we didn’t go into debt for that day. I enjoy watching your videos but especially enjoy when Michael joins in. He has such good advice. My husband and I have always agreed that our best investment was investing in our children’s education. We’ve always put money aside on a weekly basis since our first born was 3 years old. Both of our children do not have student loans. We’ve always made it a priority which at times meant making sacrifices in other areas but it was a personal choice that we made together and one that we do not regret. Like you mentioned, the most important thing is to have these discussions early on and to make sure you’re on the same page.
Michael ..... don’t under estimate yourself. Marnie’s viewers have enjoyed sharing our day with her but we respect your perspective and advice. Sadly my husband passed away in July and I am so grateful that my husband and I planned for our future because one never knows what life brings and what hardships you will encounter. You don’t want the added stress of finances on top of everything else. One never plans for funeral costs and things of that nature at a young age so it’s something that sadly we don’t want to discuss but you really should have money set aside for that.
On a happier note this video brought me back to a video that you did five years ago where Marnie brought you on to discuss finances and how to budget (MQA) I believe. You could see the love between the two of you and you were teasing her about how much money she spent on her hair nails and make up. It brought a smile to my face because it reminded me of the banter between myself and my husband. Please keep doing these videos Michael.

I’d love to comment on that wedding question. I got married (2nd marriage) in 1991. I bought a $300. Cream colored tea length gown. I had all our flowers made out of silk (can’t remember the exact cost but not crazy expensive) or you can make your own. We got married in this gorgeous little church with close family and our best friends and we ate afterwards at a really nice restaurant in our area. It wasn’t crazy expensive but we had the best time. One of my friends video taped the wedding. You can have a beautiful wedding with spending a ton of money.

Hi Marnie, Good advice and from personal experience too! Love the light blue sweater and your Kendra Scott earrings. It was so nice to see both you and Michael. You were so wise to not move to LA. We have taken some vacation trips to LA in past years and while it is a beautiful place (Disneyland is fun!) the traffic is not fun. I used to think the traffic in SF Bay Area was bad (and it is), but it can't compete with the LA traffic. We may end up leaving CA at some point. It depends on where our son ends up living. Thanks for a very helpful video. xoxo, Karen

This was great! Thank you putting this together. Watched this with my husband. That was fun and sparked off some great discussions. For most part we are on the same page but it's great to get little reminders to revisit it again every once in a while as our life changes. Our son will be going to WSU either this Fall or next (He'll be doing an Americorps service 1st hopefully). We've been saving since he was born but also consulted a college advisor recently to help us take advantage of programs that are available to college students and to make sure we were on point with application dates and things. There are lots of programs that we weren't aware of when applying for college (something as simple as the WUE, Americorps gives 6K towards college, and then of course what the college itself offers if you know enough to look for it)Consulting a professional was a great help to us.
The wedding answer is so so important! My younger son is having his Bar mitzvah this Fall and I have to stay focused on that too! We will probably have the ceremony and a nice luncheon for that. Having money for him to go to college, and enjoy other extra curricular activities and be able to give to others. These things are more important to us .

Shout out from L.A.! I’ve hung on since the financial crisis as a single mom with a mortgage. I used to dream of moving to Arizona, NC, or Texas. Had my eye on Austin. I’ve made it this far with a pension and a full time job, but I still hope to cash out and head east one day. Thanks for sharing your resident expert brainiac!

You two are such a great team, on the same page and a very cute couple. Wonderful video, thank you for answering these questions. I have to agree with living below your means and weighing in on moving to a higher cost of living area,, my husband planned to retire early as well and we made the mistake of taking the transfer to a higher cost of living area and that stalled the retirement for 10 years out! Would love to see more!

Excellent advice from both of you. And Michael should be on camera more often. You are both beautiful/handsome, fun, upbeat and give good, sound advice. My son-in-law is also an attorney in corporate bankruptcy and now works in the US Bankruptcy Court. He is also extremely careful with finances as is my husband who is in banking. If more of us could instill these good habits in our children, it would save them so much heartache in the areas of finance. By the way, my son-in-law clerked for a San Antonio judge years ago. Not sure if you two ever crossed paths back then. Great advice all around from you both. One thing I really wish many of friends MY age (68) had done when they worked was to PLEASE take advantage of your employers' 401k programs. I have been shocked at many of my friends who either didn't start a savings program and are now struggling to make ends meet on Social Security. And yes, start when you get your first job because it can add up quickly the amount you save. And the time goes by very quickly in life to have not saved anything.

💖🎉💖🎉💖When I learned how bad of a deal it is to buy a car, I sold my dream car (Audi) and bought myself a used Honda civic CASH for $14k. BEST decision I ever made. Do I miss my Audi, ABSOLUTELY but watching my savings grow is a better feeling than driving that beautiful car! I want to buy a house cash!🤗💕 Single AND living in crazy expensive California, it's the only way. I teach my boys to give save spend (Dave Ramsey & Chris Hogan)-- I learned this from them. I also never believed in credit cards so that helps a lot! Basically, if I can't pay for it in cash, then I cant afford it! Although financing a house would be ok with me but I'd like to have 50% down. Have fun saving!

Love this video!!! I have 3 daughters and haven't saved yet for their college, I'm focusing on catching up on my retirement savings... what are current percentages running for college loans if my girls have to go that route? I'm very familiar with historically what mortgages and car loans have ran, but not college.

Here’s the answer Michael sent me: Best is to look at salliemae.com - the quasi government entity for student loans (it’s like Fannie and Freddie) but for student loans. The rates are keyed off an index specific to Sallie Mae.

I really enjoyed this post. I’m always trying to understand money but don’t always make good decisions. I recently sold a house and I have a decent amount of money to invest. However, I’m so uneducated about it, I don’t know what to do....

I loved this video and look forward to seeing more like it! Michael mentioned investing in property. Do you own additional real estate? Do you recommend that as an additional means of income? How do you handle medical insurance now that Michael is retired? My husband is self-employed and we pay a fortune for medical insurance. Thank you!
