Addicts (of any kind) and/or people who struggle with obsession can absolutely value from receiving this conversation with an open mind. Not just people who have dealt with alcoholism. Well done

Be careful not to think that "detached from thinking" is a part of TM. That's sometimes a side-effect, but that's not the point. TM works by setting up a situation where the brain becomes less and less aware in the direction of becoming completely unaware of anything at all, even though it remains in alert mode. This situation allows the brain to rest more efficiently in a lower-noise way, which allows it to repair the damage from stress. Long-term, simply by alternating TM and normal activity, your normal mind-wandering rest starts to become more TM-like and so new stress is handled as it happens or shortly thereafter. In theory, eventually there will be no difference between TM and normal mind-wandering rest and so experiences, no matter how stressful, are handled as they happen and nothing seems to "get" to you. Actually, things still make you angry or sad or whatever, but the stress is handled so fast that to someone else, it looks like you're never affected by anything. You still are, but you recover so fast that no-one realizes that. you're coping: they think that you aren't reacting at all. That's (for most people) after 50 or 75 years of meditating regularly, but the trend starts from the very first TM session: your ability to cope grows and continues to grow as long as you meditate regularly until (in theory at least), 50 or 75 years later, your brain is always resting, even in the face of the most stressful events, just as deeply as during the deepest level of TM.
