I definitely used qsynth and VMPK (virtual midi piano keyboard), and I think the JACK audio connection kit may have also been involved. I left the laptop that I did this on in my dorm for thanksgiving break, so I can't check to see what I specifically used.
@@emachine003 thanks for that. I got qsynth working with alsa and got some nice soundfonts so I'm happy that I can just sit and play stuff and muck around. Next, to get a sequencer (or DAW) and make some music. I used fruity loops a bit back in the day so I'm leaning towards LMMS.

@@emachine003 Ardour is the big option most linux people seem to use especially if they are recording audio and not just using midi. There are lmms vs ardour (vs qtractor and others) videos all over youtube.
