  • Triumph of the City: how our greatest invention makes us richer, smarter, greener, healthier and happier
    Speaker: Professor Edward Glaeser
    Chair: Professor Henry Overman
This event was recorded on 14 March 2011 in Sheikh Zayed Theatre, New Academic Building
Building and maintaining cities is difficult and density has costs, but in this presentation Professor Edward Glaeser will argue that these costs are worth bearing, because whether in London's ornate arcades or Rio's fractious favelas, whether in the high rises of Hong Kong or the dusty workplaces of Dharavi, our culture, our prosperity, and our freedom are all ultimately gifts of people living, working, and thinking together -- the ultimate triumph of the city.

Glad you like the videos. Yes we are looking at ways in which we might provide the slides either as a separate 'slide-audio' video or combined with the video of the speaker.

Thank you so much for these lectures, is it possible to have these filmed in such a way that the slide projections would be in the frame

well that whole concept didn't hold well in 2020. NYC has never seen such an out flux of residents. Crime is at the 70's levels. Anyone that can leave the city is leaving.

Two years after your comment, rents in NYC have spiked, which wouldn't be the case if there had been a mass exodus.

Dead wrong at 41:50. If you put high rises in the Village, you'll ruin it. Look at midtown in Atlanta. It's not like adding towers raised affordability. In New York there are poor low-rise neighborhoods and wealthy low-rise neighborhoods, and all are better off without towers.

I have only begun to look at this and the book, but I immediately have to ask the question: Where is the energy budget? I don't see it in the book's table of contents. What about Rome and something as simple as the disruption of the aqueducts? I will look and listen a little further, but my first impression is that this is complete bullshit!

Spoken like a true expert. Please show us your well researched insights at your school from the back of a barn to support the bullshit statement. Not even began a book but claim it to be bullshit because it doesnt include your limited topics?
Saw one of your poorly presented videos teaching people to not shave and not to buy new stuffs, lol. Learn some economics
