  • Unicorns have been in human consciousness for over 2000 years, but did they ACTUALLY once exist? Were hunts for them in deep forests real or myth? Did their horns, which sold at exorbitant amounts of money in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, actually possess magickal properties? If you look into early unicorn lore, their horns were never white, they were always described as black and seeping red fluid. There's a type of fungal growth equines can get (goats, humans and other mammals can also be infected with it) which causes a bony protrusion that could have helped develop the legend of unicorns. It's interesting to note that sightings occured worldwide and were not isolated in one or two locals. There's a story I know of where a native american tribe used to hunt andeat these animals with the meat being "quite palletable".

Great information! And of course, royalty would have access to the horns and have them in their "collection" of valuable things. Due to how magical the horns apparently were, and the unicorn had to be killed to get it, they could have been killed out of existence, which would be sad if true. You have certainly presented a strong case for their existence. Well done!

Most depictions of unicorns showcase them with horns basically indentical to those of narwhals. Except a narwhal "horn" is actually a tooth. So would that mean that those depictions of unicorns had teeth growing out of the top of their heads?

      They're not the same creature.

@@YourHerosQuest Not what I'm asking. I'm asking if a unicorn horn is a tooth because they are morphologically similar.

@@RottenRossDifferent kinds of rhinoceras. Some have one, some have two. An example of a one horned rhino is an Indian rhinoceras.
