Yea compared to welded or LSD this shit is really sad... I feel it in the same way with my 330i, took it out on track though and was surprised at what an open diff can do, at the end of the day I started linking up most of the track. But with a welded diff I'd absolutely shred from the beginning as it's so much more predictable and actually much easier.

agreed. The top end motors are incredible pieces of engineering. But nothing beats an old beater getting thrashed around in its last days, just like it should be.
3.38 diff on the 320ci is actually not that long gearing. The 330ci has a 2.93 final drive ratio which is much longer gearing and If you just weld it or rebuild it as LSD, the stock gear ratio is fine for drifting, especially if you have the 170hp variant with the same diff. You could also engine swap the car with a M54b30 or b25 and keep the diff, then the gears would be very short

I understand the clutch part, I do it all the time. But isn't brake make it worse? Front of your car will brake faster because front wheels have more traction in this situation, resulting in spin. Or are you talking about slight brake tap to stop rear wheels from spinning?
@@the_skips If the car is too wide, definitely pal. I just meant like in this example, where you're losing control and going a bit too wide, you'll slow down and regain control. Traction in the front in this case would be a bit like driving a FWD in snow, if you're sliding you want a bit of power up front just to straighten the car and pull you forward.
Shorter and welded diff, smaller rear wheels, hydrostick and weight reduction (poly bushings, e36 front control arms later on) will make this thing a banger. This ride could bring you a lot of skills

That's the type of stuff my dad and I would do in slippery conditions with our BMW E36, but safly, beacuse of an issue with the gearbox, the car had to get scrapped, as the repairs would've costed too much. Either way though, it's nice to see that other people are enjoying BMW cars the same way that me and my dad did. Really brings back memmories.

I have m54b25 and im really happy. But if you find a 2.5 take it over the 2.2. Same engine, same everything just more torque and power. Other than different bore and stroke of the cylinders its the exactly 1 to 1 same engine.
@@RahellOmer its normal stock differential if you have for example weleded differential wheel spin at same speed whole time. if you have open differential when you turn for example left , left wheel spins slown but right sping faster than it woudl spin at the same speed not turning
A friendly advice - be really careful when drifting with an open diff, if you plan on doing so. It can handle really unpredictably, compared to a LSD or even a welded
I've done this with my e46 but i HIGHLY recommend going and welding the diff or putting a shim or locker in it. Drifting open diff is insanely hard to do, this guy is just an cracked driver. About to put a locked diff in my325i this week and take it sliding, will be keen to see how it compares to my GT86

Haven't done much since i've owned it, mainly just rust repairs. I also replaced the radiator and hoses in the cooling system because they started to fail.

The car struggles to gain angle, wait a bit before releasing the clutch in the clutch kick let the engine rpms climb before releasing and it'll be easier
@@goshochernii Drifting is all about throttle control its really hard to explain, if the car is too slippery let the throttle go a bit so the tires spin slower and they gain traction, while if the car is straightening out you can give a little more gas to make it slide more and gain angle easier, if that dont work because the car is low power you can try using left foot brake and give throttle while tapping the brake so the front tires act more as a pivot point and the car rear rotates around them therefore making more angle.

You meant that in his case with dry road, expecting he knows it, it is a good practice to give a bigger input to the clutch (because the car is low power) so the tires spin more - giving you more angle. But if you dont know the road you are dealing with you should try smaller inputs first, because the tires might spin a lot and you could understeer badly, am I right?

You should be able to do everything on 2nd with that diff ratio. Don't listen to the softball encouraging pleasing guys in the comment section. Open diff is drifteable but oh so unpredictable. Could make you meet that same rock front first the 3rd time who knows. Just get an LSD, will be cheaper that the repair of a wreck in my opinion. You have potential, don't waste it, a few views are not worth you crashing your car.

1000hp drift cars are at max angle with just a blip of the throttle. with no power you have to actually focus on weight transfers and clutch kicking

I think it needs just a little more power. Even +10HP would make a difference.
No, a diff ratio like 3.73 or 3.91 will but its also a open diff
