- 100km on one battery is possible but it can be a stressful experience requiring careful battery management and this can take away from the enjoyment of the ride. To combat this, Chris chucked another battery in his backpack and went for a spin; using his E-Bike to hit all the spots he used to drive between!

@A v A -- I carry a backup battery. I have a total of 1,252.8 Watt hours. I always loved my fat tire ebike, but that second battery eliminated the "range stress factor" and turned the entire experience into absolute joy. If you're going to spend a couple or few thousand bucks for the bike, blow another 5-6 hundred on a second battery. You couldn't make a better purchase.
@EMBN -- My minimum "joy-ride" is 4-5 hours, 50-60 miles. You are absolutely correct about that second battery relieving the "range stress". If people really knew the feeling of having more range than you ever need, they would buy that backup battery in a second! It's a game changer.
I just bought a second battery for my ebike. I now have a 150 KM range. It is TOTALLY stress free to have MORE range than I need. Before, I was CONSTANTLY monitoring and calculating my remaining range. Now...I just enjoy the joy of the ride.

spfttt I’ve had two as my bike shop gave me a spare off a returned ebike free just never used it as can’t figure out how to carry a spare huge levo battery.
Lol it's not that big, this guy easily could've carried two. Either get a trailer like an extrawheel or B.O.B and carry a dozen batteries or have a rear rack if you're on hardtail/bike packing frame bag on full sus and carry 4 -6 batteries. Then you can go actual big distances like 120 miles. 100km/60 miles is easy and a short saturday afternoon ride people do all the time. You just need to be actually fit.
Two batteries is awesome, every ebike needs a mount for a second battery option. Tip would be to swop the batteries at 50% to let the battery recover slightly for more range and keep 20% left in each for battery health.
Did the Trans Cambrian Way last October (100 miles across Mid Wales, mostly off road). Day 2 section is 44 miles (71 kms) and even though I had a spare tank of electricity in the rucky I wanted to see how far I could go on one tank. Lots of battery management but made it, was well chuffed! 👍😊 Bike: Haibike Xduro Allmtn 9.0. Doing it all again this year 👌
I rode 33km and +1230m with only a 375w battery and I'm happy with that. Love my Sam2. ;-)
I've had a little over 50km out of a single battery on mine, but with only a bit over 800m climb, on cross country trails with a bit of care on battery use. More technical singletrack is more like 35km range if I use Trail most of the time, just managed two laps of Bedgbury, but really had to stay in Eco as much as possible for the last half of the second loop. I have TEC pack though so if I want to go out for four hours and not worry about range, it is great.
I have become a happy owner of jam2 plus, and I can drive up to 40 kilometers in more difficult terrain with a proper term, but this is the maximum on Eco. What is the situation with the TEC system if we assume that the route will have a maximum altitude of 2000 meters, how many kilometers can you theoretically travel? About 65-70?
an old regen bionx stumpy got me 40 miles of paths and puddles years ago . 1 of the things i miss on mid drives .Good old regen braking and putting power back in the batt. Some big brains working on the best of both worlds i bet $ .Awesome wilderness over there in UK. No giant predators to worry about . No yelling "Hey Bear !" all day lol
40 km in the morning, 2 hrs recharge in the pub ( for body and battery), 30 km in the afternoon. Carrying the charger is lighter than carrying a battery. More pressure in the tires helps a lot (you’re not going to ‘send it’ on a long ride).

I ride a Focus Bold2 plus.Standard Battery brings 70km and with an extra T:E:C Battery I can ride 140km (in Eco Mode only) I think it is a really long Distance ! Love it !!! Greets from Germany
I've found a Bosch battery fits in a Topeak Midloader 3L frame bag - avoids a heavy backpack :-)
great choice for those hot days too . for icy days tho a backpack keeps the rider and battery at better temps i think

Good insight always wondered if I should carry my other battery but never have. I think I would leave the battery in my car in the middle ride out and back one way then change and ride the other way and back. Levos have a huge awkward battery not easy to carry. That might be a good video list good ways of carrying different types of batteries safely. So even if you have it in your backpack you won’t suffer a back injury if you fall.
racepnd there are specific backpacks for ebikes, with a reinforced/padded dedicated pocket for batteries

Loved the vid. Now having a knackered back & diminished strength in right leg I'm looking at e-biking as a way to get back on the trails. (I live 5 miles from Llandegla). Your film reminded me of an outing a few years back - The Hell of The North Cotswolds - 100km as I remember. Great day out. Power source for the day? 2 X 48v? No ... A 5 pack of Tesco doughnuts.

Ive done a few full on rides & taken my charger with me & used it in a friendly bar or cafe for short top up
Bosch have a system where you can put 2 batteries on the frame. On the tide of takes 5% from one then swaps to the other for 5%. Much better for battery management and both batteries will never get to 0 unless you exhaust both of them. I just ordered a bike like this. 1125Wh. Cant wait.
1600wh on My home build Chris, so 1 battery 130mile range with regen! I now never even consider range anxiety.

What I would like to see is rental service for batteries. I cannot really justify buying another battery for very infrequent use but I'd be willing to rent one for a weekend or so. Probably not feasible for internal batteries but might work for e.g. Shimano external battery.
Wouldn't work because there's too many different shaped battery packs and no standardization. Just get fit and ride an XC or Gravel bike and you can easily pull off 60-100 miles in a afternoon.
@@KandiKlover I have total of 7 bikes of which one is ebike. I do own also a gravel bike and I've ridden >100 km rides. But that was not the point, was it?
The external Shimano battery is common enough for rental use. At least the shops who do rent Shimano bikes could also rent batteries.
I did the Burma Road and then went up Cairngorm mountain did 96km + 1600m of ascent but swapped out for the second battery when the first dropped to 1 bar. That was the end of March and temperature plays a huge part too. I'm finding now it's warmer the range has gone up by a noticeable amount just taking the one battery on my CX powered KTM (2 x 500wh batteries btw)

I rode 29.5 miles of mixed riding today with 3540ft of ascent, according to Garmin using just one of my two 500Wh batteries on my Merida E160-800 & ended my ride with the battery being on red. I do however feel that the Shimano system fitted to the bike actually gives you more power than you really need when riding on roads & paths on eco mode, & that this impacts somewhat upon your range, with only the trail & boost modes being customisable for power. Nice & informative video though...
You can adjust the Eco levels with FreeMax, but you'll still need an interface unfortunately.

This has been a real eye opener. We did some alpine rides with one battery, 55 to 60 K with 2000 or plus meters in alt, but that was just with no juice for the last 5 k. Now we are looking for the levo with 700 wh. Could that one do the trick without a spare battery and back pack...
Of course you can do such a ride with an motorless bike. You just are slower uphill and you need a proper lunch break. I just did a 104 Kilometer and 2500 meter climb ride with an emtb and needed some charging during a break in between.

On my Giant I can easily go over 150kms with one charge in ECO mode...it shows how far the tech has come in just a couple years.
Do you know if the Bosch power tube 500 is interchangeable between different bikes? I see the extra battery isn’t cheap. I don’t want to buy one that isn’t compatible with my bikes down tube.
Today 58 km, +2522m, 23% of 700w battery left. On the Italian apls. Theorically I could get to +3200m.

Hey John, do you have an E-bike? The 2019 BULLS E-Stream Evo AM 4 27.5+ has a Brose S Mag motor and a 750 Wh battery. I think it could make the 100Km or 62 mile journey. That's the bike I plan on buying this year. It will be my first E-bike and lots of great places to ride here in northern California, USA. I've been riding regular mountain bikes for over 30 years since I was a kid, and now it's time to make the change over to E-bikes. I've been watching lots of these EMBN videos and doing research on what E-bike to buy. It's the best time it has ever been for E-bikes right now. So much cool new technology just coming out this year with better motors and more capacity batteries. The new Brose S Mag got rated best motor at ebike-mtb.com/en/the-best-emtb-motor/

Why would you turbo all the way?! Eco / trail mode gives more than enough assistance. Theres no where youd need to turbo an ebike everywhere.
Cos we are lazy and its all about severe climbs.
Like climbing Moe Famau and 3 other mountains in one morni g.

@Wernard Blackburn -- You are correct depending on the class of ebike. Most are programmed to cut power to the motor when speed exceeds 25km/hr. I "hacked" mine and set it to 40 km top speed.

Considered doing tests with different motors and no assist at all? Which are the easiest to pedal?
Bikes fitted with Shimano E8000 motor systems are reasonably easy to ride with the motor off, as the gearing doesn't impact badly on it when pedalling... It's a different story with E-Bikes fitted with Bosch performance line CX motors, as the enmeshed gearing badly affects you when pedalling. I cannot speak for bikes fitted with other motor systems
I always leave the keys in the bike until I go out to ride so that I won't forget them.

Did direct time comparison on different hilly road courses, with Conti Speed King 2.2 tires. With 15%, Im still little bit faster than road bike.
My Gaint 500 battery wont fit in my backpack haha, its super heavy and big.
Was thinking the same, mine is too big, and very heavy.

@Ian Jones -- Sounds like you haven't spent the L500. If you did, you would know why "we" spend it. Pure joy and freedom from stress. I made my own pack for 3 dollars.
No, my ebike cost 3500 and that was my top budget so I. Couldn’t afford it if I wanted to, know it’s a commercial channel but little recognition of the cost is my point to put this into perspective for the majority of riders. I’m looking to budget hopefully for a larger capacity battery over carrying two when technology develops. Don’t like riding with a pack so not keen on the additional load. Great if you do and have the budget though and don’t mind the pack weight.

Check out the new 2020 Scott Genius eRIDE using the new Bosch system with the option for an standard powerpack add on battery for 1125Wh total capacity. I think the Scott will be my first ebike. Looks like a great bike. Now just need to find out when it will be available in the United States. Oh the agony of waiting a little longer. Finally I can reduce the range anxiety I had about buying an e-mountain bike and didn't want to carry an extra battery in a backpack but on the bike itself.

Wait, wait let me get my Goblin fingers warmed up. I have a dual battery 🔋 ebike and yes it’s an ecell ebike it weighs 92 lbs and that is as much as a small donkey if my donkey need water 💦 and food 🍱 I can’t carry that donkey on my shoulders but if I carry the charger with me and I am really nice and with money in my pockets maybe someone will let me charge it while on my little excursion my donkey will love me for it.
