- Finally another real video on this channel! It's been a while, hasn't it! In the 1870's, there was a push in France to restore the Bourbon Monarchy after the fall of Napoleon III. However, due to complications in negotiations, the plan fell through. But what if that changed? What if the monarchy returned once again? Find out in today's video!

About the flag incident :
Henry was raised by the only daughter of Louis XVI, who survived from the Great Terror...
So she very hated the tricolour flag...
She hated everything regarding the Revolution. From the execution of both of her parents, to mobs of Parisians slaughtering nobles and priests in prison without any trial, and the abuse she and her brother suffered while they where in custody, by being kept in seperate dark chambers where the guards would regularly abuse, beat and starve them, with her brother having succumbed to the bad treatment and died.
She in fact would never mentally recover from the trauma she experienced during the revolution and would always be paranoid and refuse to ever returne to France.
No wonder why she would enforce her beliefs so ardently on Henry.

A stable monarchist Europe? No fascism, globalism, or widespread communism? A traditional America? This alternative world sounds amazing!
Fine until Germany develops the A-bomb first, since with a war victory there would have been no WW2 era flight of physicists to America. We would all either be speaking German or kowtowing to the Kaiser and his Second Reich.

Fun fact: The French Bourbons are STILL in exile in Spain to this day.
Louis XX, Duke of Anjou, is the Pretender King of France (that is the actual term). He and his family were content under Franco, but they still do seek an era where they can return as a monarch not unlike that of the UK.
They have a website, and are insanely based. You know it’s legitimate (pun intended) because of the deliberate lack of any English words in his website or any of his channels.
The Duke if Anjou is not the rightful King of France, that is Jean IV Count of Paris
@Pablo Suárez Total legitimism is cringe, anyone who actually manages to restore monarchy to a republic has the right to pick who becomes King. Legitimism was a disaster for Spain, which became a liberal democracy in less then 1 generation after Franco stepped down

How is America staying more traditionalist and oppressive making the world better? The only thing that's explicitly better instead of "maybe roughly equivalent at best" in this timeline is no fascism, now THATS a good thing.
@@ramenbomberdeluxe4958I mean wouldn’t it be a lot more better because then, without fascism, there would be no ideological reasons as to why people oppose some social progress, thus making it easier to rationalize our way into advocating for a less oppressive society other than “That’s just how it is”. I can't believe Herny declined to become King of France over some napkin and had some problem with the national flag of France? With Herny V restoring the Bourbon Monarchy with France having another civil war due to not wanting the return of the monarchy?
I do have some questions, Josh, do the republicans in France care about the people's concerns and their well-being, and what type of government do they want for France? Do Republican officials ever hear the people's thoughts on what they want and others who wanted the best for France? Is it does not want to return to the monarchy or is it the French Parliament does not want the French Monarchy to return because of their republican values?
Anyways this is an amazing video Josh and I'm glad you're updating a new video, it's months since you haven't any videos is anything okay? But I'm glad you get to be part of something that can change your life for the best and I wish you good luck and success in your life. Speaking of French Monarchy, could you please do what video if Napoleon accepted the Frankfurt Proposals of 1813?
If Napoleon had accepted the proposals and still keep having the title of Emperor, would it be possible for Napoleon might focus his reign on moderating France? It would be possible for Naopeloen to modernize France for he was an excellent steward and administrator who had ordered projects such as building many roads, canals, bridges, and other forms of infrastructure on the mainland during his time as Emperor.
His infrastructure projects did have actually given the unification of both Germany and Italy in the future that was once occupied by France. In his 300 days as the ruler of Elba in exile, Napoleon ordered massive infrastructural projects on the island such as building roads, draining entire marshes, and developing its natural resources, mining industry, and agriculture in less than a single year. Now imagine France thriving under Napoleon's leadership with the economy being far better in the Mid- 1820s since France still lose the Napoleonic Wars but rather they ended in a neutral peace. Come to think of it, if France were able to keep the territories that it occupied the lands that Prussia might have the ability to expand and unify all of the german lands into Germany in our own timeline.
This would have made France the largest economy in mainland Europe with a GDP far higher than the United Kingdom with the USA, Italy, and Prussia would lag behind. There be technological advancements that are the stream train in our timeline with Naopeloen dying just before this discovery. With Napoleon alive, he would have focused on railroads and used the steam trains to finish up the infrastructural projects much faster getting things done and seeing the benefits of steam trains transporting troops along with armaments much faster than horses or on foot.
Napoleon would rather focus on the railroad network to finish his infrastructure due to France's higher population, more powerful economy, and Napoleonic France's authoritarian form of governance the United Kingdom did not have. For the Emperor have the divine and absolute right to what is best for France in the Napoleonic Era.
Do you think Napoleon might gave up his powers to civil administrators and his Field Marshals and given more power to the parliament side with the Senate? What about Napoleon II? He and his mother fled to Austria to flee the wrath of the returning Bourbon Monarchy in France. This timeline would be different for Napoleon II and his mother Marie Louise, Duchess of Parma do not have to flee and be with Napoleon, with their lives won't be any danger from the old monarchy.
This would avoid Napoleon II's death in our own timeline he died at age of 31 from tuberculosis, for this would not happen in this alternate timeline. Napoleon II was clearly extremely gifted and he excelled in his early education for he spoke German, Italian, and other foreign languages and he had a clear passion for the military and military strategies in history just like his father.
He has also been educated by his father about war, politics, and governance and has been taught by Admistraive Field Marshals such as Nay, Berthier, and Davu. Imagine the prince becoming more like his father. Is it possible Napoeloen II might marry earlier or not? What roles does this alternate French Empire have in this timeline? What wars or foreign affairs involve themselves? I think Napoleon II would be much a capable leader than Napoleon III if he lived longer and stayed in France in his prime, do know who shall be the bride of Napoleon II?
This is my thoughts and analysis on what if Napeoloen accepted the Frankfurt Propaslas of 1813. I had some other what-if ideas, I could share with you if want some.
Anyways this is a nice video Josh, keep up the amazing work and I wish you good luck and I hope you're having a wonderful day!!
Napoleon Bonaparte technically modernize Paris.
If my memories are good, Napoleon accepted the proposal but the allies (most notably Metternich) said that it was too late because all of them wanted the abdication of napoleon.
An other good could be "What if an other general led the coup d'état of the 18 brumaire ?"
Since the conspirators (like Sièyes and Talleyrand) had other proposed generals for the leading figures of the coup (Bernadotte for example).
With an other general in power, we could maybe see the republic survive under the Consulat (instead of the empire).
Tell me what you think about this idea.
Read about Marie-Julie Jahenny.
I don’t agree with the assessment that France would have stayed out of the Great War if France had restored the monarchy in 1870. I think that France would want ho exact revenge on the Germans regardless if France were to be a republic or a monarchy. One very important thing not mentioned in this video is that the French 3rd Republic was established in 1870 and lasted until the NAZIs occupied France in 1940.
I disagree
I love the music choice. French Royal Music is amazing.
honestly Henri V was quite old at the time and the idea of Orleanist succeeding him probably made him sick to the stomach. Plus he was fond of his nephew Charles XI/VII of France and Spain

GOOD TO HAVE YOU BACK.

I'm not so sure about this one chief.
1. Henry V was childless (which is why his faction made a deal with the Orleanists in the first place) and his closest legal heir was probably Louis-Philippe II anyway. The only reason the Legitimist cause started supporting the Carlist candidate was because they just hated the Orleanests too much by then.
2. The French Commune and Bloody Week broke revolutionary paris for a hundred years. Without that backbone no French Revolution would have gotten off the ground.
Maybe you’re not aware that the last Austrian empress Zita‘s father was duke of Bourbon Parma, and inherited Duke Chambord‘s private wealth, and certainly thought himself in line to the French throne. The French government seemed to have suspected something like this and refused Zita‘s brothers to enlist in the French army during World War I. It was the Belgian army they ended up joining. Zita’s younger brother Sixtus of Bourbon Parma played a vital part in the Sixtus affair during World War One, which a failed attempt of separate peace between Austria and Hungary and the allied forces…

France is not atheist. Nobody ever said it should be atheist. You American can't tell the difference between "secular" and "atheist", that's crazy ! Also there's never been any Henri 5 since he wasn't crowned, his name was Henri d'Artois.
Only 17% of the country is christian, and about 5% is muslim...
I rlly doubt the orleanists would have come to power after henry, like, the orleanists plotted against the main bourbons like 3 times in a row, it's far more likely they choose to ignore the resignation of Phillip V of Spain of the rights to the crown and offer it to the Carlist pretender for the crown of spain, who was the legitimists choice in our timeline
He was probably being purposefully unreasonable over the flag so they would leave him alone
Well he agreed to just about every other term, so if he just wanted them to leave him alone he would've refused in general, but he didn't. That is a good point though that I wish I had brought up more during the video.

Damn you Henry!
Austria-Hungary surviving after ww1 is very unrealistic even If they won against Serbia. The main reason Austria-Hungary collapsed was due to independence movements, and I do not see this changing as Austria-Hungary would have to fundamentally restructure the way they treat minorities in their empire, which seems rather unlikely, especially if they were to win a war against Serbia and hold greater influence in the Balkans. It might parashoot the collapse however, their collapse is imminent.

Monarchism must rule again! France will become über based by returning to monarchism.
Jean Count of Orleans should be made King of France in a Symbolic role similar to Englands monarchy.
Quick note: the monarchy wouldn’t just pass from the Bourbons to the Orléans’. The prince wouldn’t call himself “Louis Philippe II,” he’d instead be called “Philippe VII,” and the two houses would unify.
The song at the end is the return of the prince to paris
Henry: i’m sorry, but I simply cannot abide that flag!
“Why didn’t you just become king and then change the flag later when no one could have stopped you?”

funny and simple I LOVE IT
And your premisses about avoiding WW1 are wrong. The french 3rd Republic was a bourgeois republic. Very pro-capitalism and conservative in almost all except in their opposition to the influence id the catholic church and embrace of secularism. France, under a king or a president would have remained revisionist of the peace with Germany as it wanted Alsace-Lorraine back.
German militarism, specially naval militarism, colonial partition revisionism and growing influence over central and eastern Europe would still be seen as a threat to Britain. Serbian nationalism and its alliance to pan-slavic Russia would still be in place. Turkey's inner conflict between modernists and ottomanists would remain and no matter how it would be solved it would still challenge Britains domain over Egypt french / italian domain over north Africa and russian over the northern caucasus.
Most importantly, the economic and technological changes would still push for the changes that conservatives hate. Growing industrialisation would still bring pressure for the democratisation of countries (Sweden was never at war, actually made good money from them) and developed its democracy removing power from the king and creating a social democratic state as an example. Antibiotics and profilatics allowed for the sexual mores revolution. The need for longer education that industrial societies have allowed for the creation of a new age group: the teenager, with youth culture in tow.
Airplanes, tv sets and computers allow for a global economy and culture.
If you want a stable non revolutionary western culture go back in time and kill Guttenberg. Then we can all go back to believing the Pope is the one representative of God on earth, that kings rule by divine right, that people who dissent should be publicly killed
To anyone wondering: the gap between Louis XVI and XVIII is because, after the death of his father, Louis (his son) was called Louis XVII by royalists.
Louis XVII was no ones father he died as little boy. Monarchists proclaimed him king after the execution of Louis XVI (his father) but never officially reigned, he was only recognized by monarchist opposition. Louis XVIII was a brother of late Louis XVI and he reigned after Napoleon.

i dont like the compromise of an orleanist heir making them legitimate
Damn Henry.
I don’t like the depiction of Henry. While it was in a way over the flag, I believe it was more about the type of monarchy that France would have. The question of would France have a monarch that reigns but not rule like in the UK, or have a proper more traditional monarchy.
there was another attempt to put another Henry Duc of Omale from the House of Orleans and the youngest son of King Louis Phillip who was very popular among the french for defeating the Algerian army of tens of thousands and ambushing them with reconnaissance unit of less than 300 soldiers when he was at his early twenties. than later on in life, he managed to mediate to prevent an imminent civil war after the liberals tried to remove christian education from the curriculum and convinced the Christians to not massacre every liberal household in Paris and look for a middle ground solution. people asked him to run for president and than declare himself King like NapoleonIII but he declined. at that time he was struck with numerous tragedies and couldn't commit to such colossal task. under his commandement of the battle he used the same tactics Charles Martel used against muslims at the battle of Poitier.
So correct me if I'm wrong, does that mean that the monarchy in France wasn't restored just because Henry didn't accept a tricolor flag?
There were a multitude of different reasons why Henry didn't want the throne, but, even after numerous negotiations, and compromising on other issues, Henry would not compromise on the flag, and wouldn't take the throne.
@@JoshSullivanHistory so he would only accept the throne if the royal white flag came back or if he happened to accept the tricolor flag with a royal symbol in the middle maybe

@@fakefilthyfrank7253 No!!! Constitutional Monarchy is better.
no constitutional Monarchy is worst because breaches fundamental moral principles that undergird representative democracy, such as basic moral equality, dignity and desert.Simply put, the monarchs (and their family) are treated as morally superior to ordinary citizens and as a result ordinary citizens are treated in an unfair and undignified manner. For example, monarchs are respected, enjoy dignity, income, opportunity, public office and exalted social status just because of their inherited office, which is due to the mere historical accident of family lineage. Hence, we have good moral reason to abolish monarchy. Finally, I briefly reply to the pragmatic argument for constitutional monarchy, namely, the argument that monarchy can be allowed to play a largely ceremonial role in the context of democracy because it is beneficial for the function of society. As I argue, societies run by presidential democracies can function equally well and, what is more, no matter what the pragmatic reasons for constitutional monarchy are, we still have stronger moral reasons against it. Therefore, it should be abolished.@@juanolivares1300
