For 2022 the Orbea Rallon enduro machine got a major overhaul. Seeking to push its performance back up to the top tier of the enduro market, the podium results tell us that the redesign has some merit. A major evolution opposed to a revolution, the new Rallon has been fully re-engineered to add capability all round and produce what Orbea reckons to be the ultimate enduro machine. Offered in their OMR carbon fiber only; packing 160mm travel with a 170mm fork, and a choice of 29” or mixed wheel setups, the Orbea Rallon promises to be a speed machine. We were excited to find out how it would stack up to the competition in our Enduro Bike Shootout.
THE DIRT
Over the course of our testing period one thing became very apparent when riding the Orbea Rallon, it wants to go fast! It rewards risky riding, hanging it out and a pilot who is pushing hard. The downside to that speed and capability is that it’s not the most comfortable ride when you’re having a recovery day or just wanting to cruise around casually. Of course, you could change your suspension settings, let some air out to help, but the bike’s already low BB would really hang up with more sag.
This low BB made technical climbing tricky at times, leaving us struggling for pedal clearance, however the Rallon’s pedaling platform and light weight made it ascend excellently when the terrain was slightly less chunky. The stiff frame and firm suspension platform have us convinced that a coil shock is the way to go if you’re riding hard, choppy terrain with lots of high frequency impacts. If you’re riding trails with lots of pedaling, flow trails, big berms and jumps with spaced out bigger hits, the air is a great option, as it’s light and offers lots of platform.
The Orbea Rallon was regularly one of the crew’s top picks when it came time to put in big pedal days or drop a race run heater, on shorter tracks. It’s definitely the best pedaling bike in the mix as the light weight and general stiffness mean your power is translating to forward momentum.
Creature comforts on the frame are a definite plus. Orbea did a nice job offering a quality user experience with their on-board tool storage, internal storage pouches and overall fit and finish of the bike. The Orbea Rallon very much offers a luxury bike experience.
The Wolf’s Last Word
Orbea set out to design an enduro race bike with the redesigned Rallon, and in that they succeeded. With countless podiums under its belt, the new Orbea Rallon should be on the list of bikes to consider for those looking to beat the clock, competitors or their personal best. Now, just because it’s fast doesn’t mean it’s the best bike all around or the ideal buy for you. The stiffness takes a toll on riders who may not be super-fit or find themselves on high-speed chatter with lots of high speed, high frequency hits.
We love the Orbea Rallon for long pedal days, when we have to drop a heater of a run down or want to shred and get loose. But, in the way that throwing the family in the back of a high-performance sports car for a casual drive down a pothole-ridden road in bumper-to-bumper traffic may not be the most fun, the Rallon will make you feel the trail beneath you.

This series has been extremely entertaining! Well done
Thank you very much we appreciate that! Stay tuned for the grand finale!
There are a few really interesting bikes in this shootout. Looking forward to the recap!
Thank you, we were excited about the variety as well!
This is infinitely more informative than PB's field test. Anymore I think I only watch their field test for the impossible climb and huck to flat vids haha
Thank you for the compliment! We put a lot of energy into these as we know they’re not cheap bikes and we want people to have the best, most honest info we can give before dropping 6, 8, 10 grand.
Best bike reviews on youtube rn.
Thank you so much! That means a lot!
Great job - I own this bike and your review is absolutely spot on in ways other reviews miss. Stiff, fast, light, poppy, great climber, just not very comfortable through chatter plus a really low BB
Thank you very much for the comment and letting us know your feedback as an owner! Always great to hear others have a similar opinion on a product.
Have you tried it in the high position?
Yeah I did the high position most of the time and that worked but the low position is so nice for the head angle. In the process of overforking it at 180 to keep the head angle slacker while raising the BB. Gonna slam the seat forward on the rails and if it still feels too slack for the seat angle I'll get a reverb post and the Fair Drop Best steepener system for it.
@@gregmccandlessmusic Have you considered the Cascade Components 2021+ DHX2 mullet eyelet to raise the rear end up?
@@Shotgoon I hadn't but now I will!
who filmed the review part, can't see the bike.
I have this bike and initially I thought it was too harsh and unforgiving on rocky chatter. I added volumne spacers front and rear and reduced air pressure. Huge difference - more supple off the top and better support. Now I just need to quieten the chain slap...
I bought this bike on March. I love it.
Would be interesting to see how it performs with coil shock. You can spec it with a coil for zero cost.
We definitely prefer this bike with a coil in the rough stuff and would be how we would buy it.
What was the rider’s weight and at what spring rate? Im 176 geared up. Wondering what spring rate is best for a casual rider like me. Thanks
Was there a hair gell budget for this video?
Love the review and bike!
No sir. Murray’s Pomade all the way. Hair gel sweats out and burns the eyes!
I like the way you do group tests better than the way I don't.
That literally makes no sense.
Haha. Thank you! We like the way you leave comments better than the way you don’t!
@@corowyeet1571 It's a joke aimed at people who complain about what bikes are missing and whatnot
Nice ! Like tous serie. Hope too see a test for the mondraker (super)foxy one day
Well, I can see the mountain behind you but not the bike you’re talking about. Odd choice of framing there
But it's the Three Sisters, mountain views don't get much better :)
The specialized enduro still seems to be thee standard.
It's just so dialed. Idk what they are going to change on it moving forward
The Rallon seems to take the Enduro's formula and take it up to 11, which is probably great if you're racing. I know the Enduro is pretty firm, but has enough give to be comfortable when not going mach chicken too.
Some people say it's like Ibis Ripmo v2 with better descending capabilities. Is it correct? I love Ibis ripmo v2 for being fun on mellow trails, great cornering and nice descendor, but on chatter it feels also a bit harsh. Would this bike improve descending and keep sporty , nimble feeling on easy trails as ripmo v2?
Go check "Biker's Edge" review of the Rallon. The guy says that it's pretty much a Ripmo with a bit more capabilities downhill (suspension and HTA)
Would be nice if you put in some riding clips and explanations, but after Pinkbike Field test the best reviews on UA-cam
Thanks for sharing, could you explain what you mean by riding clips and explanations? There is a lot of riding footage in these videos so we're just trying to clarify what exactly you think would help make these better?
@@TheLoamWolf Yes.
For the riding clips:
Something like the impossible climb or efficiently test.
For the explanation:
Geometry and suspension kinematic charts
@@McSchwabl No hate on those testing methods, but I think the climb/efficiency test only really exists for entertainment value. You only really get a feel for the bikes after riding them in real-world settings. For geo and kinematic charts, check out the full reviews on our site!
@@McSchwabl those tests are bogus because they are not scientific. Rider will have different energy levels, tire placement is radically different, etc. There's nothing to be gained except for the riders subjective opinion, which this channel already gives you.
It looks like a stumpjumper… Is it feel similar?
I'm going to guess not. Stumpys tend to be very plush, especially Stumpy Evos. It sounds more like a Specialized Enduro or Rocky Mountain Altitude though even stiffer and more race focused than those two.
Definitely sounds like a coil bike to me.
What about the Megatower
I just listened to an interview with Jesse Malemed and was surprised to hear he runs his bikes pretty soft. Stiff and firm bikes feel fast, but did you do any timed testing to see if this bike was faster downhill or is your statement that it’s racer fast based on feel alone?
In Melamed's case, he's a pretty light guy and the RM Altitude has a VERY progressive back end and is a fairly stiff bike, so he can run his suspension soft without losing handling precision and the Altitude feels like an absolute scalpel at speed based on my own experience demoing one. I bombed it down Apex in Golden, CO (well known Denver area DH trail, that is a couple mile long high speed rock garden) and hands and feet were feeling just fine at the end and it had a level of precision that even my Ripmo doesn't have.
@@mrvwbug4423 did you break any pr’s on the altitude? I also ride that trail and I’m on a 2020 carbon reign but wondering if I will feel a major difference if I end up getting one
@@DavidFoundCo I broke my PR by 3min on the DH vs my Ripmo AF
@@mrvwbug4423 damn that's a serious PR
So what’s a bike that actually pedals (especially climbs in tech well) but is a little more plush in the steep gnar than the Rallon? I’ve been looking at the Firebird but it looks like it might be even more of a rocket. Any help would be appreciated.
Canyon Strive CFR is a solid shout if you’re on board with the Shapeshifter tech. Climbs tech super well and rips downhill. Fezzari La Sal Peak, Specialized Enduro and Nukeproof Mega are worth considering, though we’re yet to put much time on the Mega so can’t be sure.

@@TheLoamWolf Right on! I’ll check those out.
No Santa Cruz Megatower? Pivot Firebird 29? Transition Spire?
I haven’t really seen any reviews for the Megatower V2. Kinda weird.
They haven't had any to send out for review...we tried.
Pretty much a trek slash right
Not at all. Quite different.
Orebea is one of those brands that just do nothing for me.
